I commend you on your diligent research, Fred. I have a couple of questions and a couple of corrections. Corrections first.
Martin Dye (II), born in Richmond county, VA, to Martin Dye, Sr., and Hannah Ann Beckham, died by 1808. I have his will of 1807, and his widow, Katey Mayfield Dye, was back in NC by 1809 when her father, Abraham Mayfield died. Thus, you have either identified the wrong Martin or somehow gotten his death date wrong.
Next, John Kelley Dye was the 2nd son, not the first, born to Martin and Mary Kelley Dye. His older brother was Beckham Dye -- based on the fact that Martin named his children in order of their birth in his will. Thus, unless Beckham and John Kelley were twins, Martin and Mary were married PRIOR to 1760.
A Warren county, NC, deed of 1779 lists Martin and his son, Martin III, indicating that Martin III (the third son born to Martin II and Mary Kelley) was probably born by 1758. That puts Martin II's birth date BEFORE 1740 and makes his first marriage date around 1756 at the latest. We know from his grandpa Avery Dye's will, that Martin wasn't yet 21 when the will was WRITTEN. Thus he was likely born in 1735 or 1736.
Now to the questions. How do you know that his name was Martin Avery Dye? It makes perfect sense to me, but I'm wondering where you gleaned that information? Next, how did you derive Martin and Mary Kelly's marriage date of 1760? Third, is John Kelley Dye listed as John Kelly or just as John when he moved to Roane (WV)? What year did he move there? He was listed in Warren county, NC, circa 1790-1800.
Many thanks for any help you can render.
