The only place you would be likely to see Dykema in NL would be in the province of Friesland, because the rest of the provinces did not have the letter y. In the US the ij would usually be seen as y, unless the registrar was Dutch himself!

Thank you so much. Do you see the surname as Dykema also?

I have a photo from about 1904 that says
Aunt Scena Venima & Cousin Annie Venima & Johny.

We also have Booi, Bensema, & Zeedyck surnames within the family.

Thank you again.
My Elizbeth Dykema was born 1840 Netherlands and married John Wieringa. The family story is that her family first stopped in Whiteside County, Illinois before ending up in Iroquois County. Their daughter Hattie Wieringa married Peter Dorenbos and raised a large family. This family was mainly in Chicago and Iroquois County. They held a Holland American Picnic each year and I have the minutes of all their picnics and photos. The family names attending were Bakker, Tencate, Dorenbos, Wieringa, Dykema, Fisher, Verbury, Seatsema, Dykinga, Bierma, DeBaer, Tapp, Von Herik, Larson and many more.
We believe that Simon 1849-1926 married Martje Baar, Tena 1842-1917 married William Osterhoff, and Elizabeth 1840-1927 who married Eberuts John Wieringa were siblings.
Will be interesting in hearing from you.

Hi John,
I believe we share great grandparents - Anna Dykama Baribeau and Joseph Victor Baribeau. Their son, Claude Russel-Roche Baribeau was my grandfather, and my dad is John Baribeau. If you are tracing the Baribeau side of the family as well, the first Baribeau ancestors in the new world appear to hail from Marennes in Charente-Maritime, France (just north of Bordeaux). Is your tree posted somewhere? Curious to know how you are a Dykema. I thought Victor and Anna only had 4 boys - Roy, Leo, Charles, and my grandfather, Claude.

I got a message from a relative of yours. Reading all the notes back and forth confirms my findings, so I'll post. This was the clincher:

"However Grandma Gertie (Hiltze-Dutch sp?) was born Nov 6 1880 and died Oct 15, 1962."

That's been the problem. Her birth name was Hilje, not Grietje or anything similar to that! Here is her birth in Eenum, 't Zandt, Groningen:

Geboorte [birth] 06-11-1880 Eenum gem. 't Zandt
Kind [child] Hilje Dijkema
Geslacht v [gender female]
Vader [father] Harm Dijkema
Moeder [mother] Jantje van Dam
Bron Geboorteregister Zandt, 't 1880 [Source: Birth register of...]
Aktenummer 84 [certificate number]

...and her parents' marriage:

Source Civil register - Marriage
Archive location Groninger Archieven
General Municipality: 't Zandt
Type of record: Huwelijksakte
Record number: 23
Registration date: 07-11-1878
Groom Harm Dijkema, 27, farm hand
Place of birth: Eenum
Bride Jantje van Dam, 23, servant girl
Place of birth: 't Zandt
Father groom Floris Klaassens Dijkema, tailor
Mother groom Trientje Pieters Slager
Father bride Luilf van Dam, day laborer
Mother bride Hilje van der Veen, day laborer

Their children:

Floris, b. 9 Jan 1879, Eenum, 't Zandt
Hilje, b. 6 Nov 1880, Eenum
Luilff (m), b. 25 Jan 1882, Eenum
Pieter, b. 23 Jan 1884, Eenum; m.
Wow. I do believe you guys are now officially th most helpful strangers on Earth!

Here's what I know for sure:

Simon Scholtens
• Father: Albert Scholtens
• Mother: Geertruida van den Berg
• b. 25 March 1886 in Uithuitzermeeden
• d. ??

Gertie Dykema
• b. 6 Nov 1880 (unverified family note)
• immigrated 1889 or 1903 from 1920 and 1930 census info)
• d. 15 Oct 1962 (unverified)
• Married Simon Scholtens 2 Dec 1909 in Summit, Illinois (verified and documented)

Simon and Gertie had 4 children:
- Gertrude (1911-??)
- Herman (Abt. 1913 - Abt. 1921)
- Albert (1914-??)
- Floris ( 14 dec 1915 - 5 feb 2004)

Other notes.

Floris is my grandfather. Albert and Gertrude are (were) known family members. Herman is a big question, and im looking for info on him, but thats another topic :-) We have multiple sources indicating him (as well as a photograph), but little documentation. Sounds like he died at the age of 8, hence his only appearance on the 1920 census.

I believe Floris on the 1930 census is Hons in 1920. Although there has never been any mention of his name originally being Hons, if you calculate dates, their birthdays are within a week or so.

They moved from Chicage, Illinois to Grant, MI in 1926 with their 3 surviving children.

Grietje Dijkema

Here is the Dijkema family that immigrated 18 Apr 1882 on the P Caland:

Jan 47
Aaltje 45
Tjaard 18
Klaas 15
Cornelia 10
Harmannus 5
Grietje 6 mos

In 1900 John (b. Dec 1834) and Alice (b. Mar 1836) were in Fulton, whiteside Co, IL. All of the kids were out of the house. We need to prove whether or not these are your Grietje's parents. Their children's birth dates were:

Pieter (m), b. 15 Sep 1856; d. 18 Apr 1881, Den Andel
(He was legitimized by his mother's marriage to Jan)
Tjaard (m), b. 4 Jul 1863, Baflo
Kornelis (m), b. about 1860; d. 14 Aug 1868, Den Andel, Baflo
Klaas (m), b. 15 Feb 1866, Baflo
Kornelia (f), b. 23 Jan 1869; d. 21 Oct 1870, Den Andel, Baflo
Cornelia (f), b. 29 Apr 1871, Baflo
Harmannus (m), b. 1 Aug 1875, Baflo--1900, Fulton, wife Mary
Grietje (f), b. 29 Apr 1880, Baflo

So...where is this Grietje in 1900? She seems a very possible candidate for your Grietje.

There is a Klaas and Maggie (a common American name for a Grietje) in Emmons Co, ND in 1900
She was b. Apr 1880 and he in Feb 1866. That's a match:

1900 United States Federal Census
Name: Maggie Dylumn
Birth Date: Apr 1880
Birthplace: Netherlands
Home in 1900: Union, Emmons, North Dakota
Race: White
Gender: Female
Immigration Year: 1882
Relation to Head of House: Sister
Marital Status: Single
Father's Birthplace: Netherlands
Mother's Birthplace: Netherlands
Household Members: Name Age
Klaus Dylumn 34, clergyman
Maggie Dylumn 20, housekeeper

Does anything about this family match what you have, or do we need to look for another family? What were Peter's parents' names?

You mentioned a Floyd. I do see a few Floris (Floyd) Dijkemas, but not siblings of a Grietje. Could they have been cousins? Here are some older Florises:

nic/everdina steenhuis
Harm/jantje van dam
kornelis/frouke wildeboer
jan/elske post

I see 10 Grietjes b. between 1878 and 1887 (just in Groningen). Do you have a birthday for her?

29 Dec 1887, dv Albert & Iektje
9 Nov 1884, dv (daughter of) Harm & Siepke--she had a son Herman
2 mar 1884, dv Jan & Hilje
30 Apr 1881, dv Jan & Antje
25 Mar 1881, dv Tiemen & Trientje
23 Aug 1880, dv Klaas & Evertje
24 May 1880, dv Nantko & Houktje
29 Apr 1880, dv Jan & Aaltje--we discussed her above
19 Aug 1879, dv Johannes & Pieterke
3 Dec 1878, dv Nantko & Houktje--she d. by May 1880

Can you answer any questions above or give any more clues?

Joan carlsonjm@hotmail.com

Maybe her Dutch name was Gertje or Grietje. I could look for close matches, but should have a little more information. What are the names of her children? Where did she live and die?

I see them in Stickney Twp, Cook Co, IL, in 1910; an 1889 immigrant (maybe); no children yet.

In 1900 there's a Gertrude Dykema, dau of George and Minnie, in Cook Co. She was b. Jun 1876. Too early? Siblings Cesar, Henry, Herman, Henrietta and Minnie; 1884 immigrants. Probably not.

In 1920 Cook Co, Simon and Gertie have Gertrude, Herman, Albert and Hans (Floris?). What was the name of Simon's father? Probably one of those boys' names. And Gertie's was likely one of them also.

I realize I'm not being very helpful, but I have to leave in a few minutes, so I'm just saving information I can find quickly.

In 1930 they're in Grant, Newaygo Co, MI; 1889 imigrant; kids Gertrude, Albert and Floris (maybe Hans/1920 should have been Floris). I'll check later.

So, death certs probably won't be on-line (naming parents), since they died after 1930. Next I should look for her immigration, about 1889.

In the Dutch immigration records there's a Grietje Dijkema who immigrated on 18 Apr 1882 on the P.Caland, newborn. The age is right, but she could be the 1900 Gertie who seemed way to "old". That's a good place to start later today. We'll see who her famly was and what birthdates and names they had.

Joan carlsonjm@hotmail.com

There are so many dykema's
and I know Anna's Father was named Johannes or John, but there is also an Anna Dykema born around the same time, and same place with a Father named Floris! I have been researching, and getting more and more confused! I would appreciate any info
that you might want to share!

Thank you,
Tippy

family of Grietje Bierma, b. 1853, Groningen

The children of Peter Bierma and Anje Bos are:

1. Willem, b. 13 Apr 1851, Uithuizermeeden
2. Grietje, b. 6 Feb 1853, Stedum
3. Derk, b. 3 Mar 1856, 't Zandt
d. 6 Nov 1857, 't Zandt
4. Trijntje, b. 19 Aug 1858, 't Zandt
d. 27 Oct 1862, Toornwerd

So only two were living at time of emigration in 1867. Perhaps the photo you saw is of Grietje' brother Willem and his wife.

Grietje’s mother, Anje Bos, died in 1860:

Died 05-11-1860 't Zandt
Deceased Anje Lammerts Bos
Gender female
Age 35 jaar
Birth place Uithuizermeeden
Father Derk Pieters Bos
Mother Berentje Lammerts Dekman
Spouse Pieter Willems Bierma
Source Death register of Zandt, 't 1860
Certificate number 60

I think I posted this earlier, but here is Pieter Bierma and Anje Bos’s marriage:

Marriage 17-03-1849 Uithuizermeeden
Groom Pieter Willems Bierma, boerenknecht [farmhand]
Born Uithuizermeeden
Father Willem Tjaarts Bierma
Mother Trijntje Lourens
Bride Anje Lammerts Bos
Born Uithuizermeeden
Father Derk Pieters Bos, landbouwer [crop farmer]
Mother Berentje Lammerts Dekman
Source Marriage register of Uithuizermeeden 1849
Certificate number 4

Pieter remarried in 1861, to another Anje:

Marriage 13-12-1861 Middelstum
Groom Pieter Bierma, daglooner [day laborer]
Born Uithuizermeeden
Father Willem Tjaarts Bierma
Mother Trijntje Lourens
Bride Anje Bolhuis, dagloonster
Born Startenhuizen, Kantens
Father Harke Gerrits Bolhuis
Mother Sijpke Berends Huizinga, dagloonster [day laborer]
Source Marriage register of Middelstum 1861
Certificate number 18

Their children:

Siepke (m), b. 29 Nov 1863, Toornwerd
Gezina (f), b. 30 Aug 1866, Toornwerd

The immigration that you found (New York, 11 Jun 1867, Arnold Boninger out of Rotterdam) is not digitalized very well. If you know Dutch names (and I see you’ve added corrections to most of the family), it says:

Pieter Bierema, 42
Anje, 42
Willem, 16
Antje, 16
Grietje, 14
Harke, 11
Siepke, 3 (the registrar makes a capital S almost like an L)
Gesina, 6

Following the family on the list is Gesina Bolthuis, 31—likely a sister of Anje Bolhuis. Maybe she is the aunt who emigrated in the nanny story. And maybe she became the nanny!

Now all but Antje and Harke on the manifest are accounted for, and maybe they’re children from a first marriage of Anje Bolhuis…yes, another Anje and Pieter:

Marriage 29-08-1851 Middelstum
Groom Pieter Noorman, boerenknecht [farmhand]
Born Westerwijtwerd, Middelstum
Father Lucas Pieters Noorman, dagloner [day laborer]
Mother Antje Klaassens Wieringa, daglonersche [day laborer]
Bride Anje Harkes Bolhuis, boerenmeid [farmer’s maid]
Born Stitswerd, Kantens
Father Harke Gerrits Bolhuis, koornschipper [grain shipper]
Mother Sijpke Berends Huizinga, daglonersche [day laborer]
Source Marriage register of Middelstum 1851
Certificate number 16

(I left the Dutch names for occupations so that you can have a little Dutch in your file. All place names have been in the province of Groningen. All dates are day-month-year.)

Pieter Noorman and Anje Bolhuis’s children were (and this identifies the last two on the manifest):

1. Antje Noorman, b. 16 Nov 1851, Middelstum
2. Harke (m), b. 8 Dec 1856, Toornwerd

Pieter Noorman died 26 Feb 1859, Toornwerd.

Now for Gesina Bolhuis…yes, she was a sister of Anje Bolhuis:

Geboorte [Born] 21-01-1835 Kantens
Kind [Child] Gezina Bolhuis
Geslacht v [Gender vrouw = female]
Vader [Father] Harke Gerrits Bolhuis
Moeder [Mother] Sijpke Berends Huizinga
Bron Geboorteregister [Source Birth register of] Kantens 1835
Aktenummer [Certificate number] 7

The date of birth on Grietje's death certificate may say 1855, but remember that certificates are only as accurate at the person reporting the data and the person recording it!

Joan carlsonjm@hotmail.com

Re: Dijkema / Bierma

Well, for one thing, Grietje Bierma's first son was named William Peter!

Her other children were named Jeanette, Alice Catherine, and Gretchen Caroline (Gretchen is my g-grandmother b. 1892 in Orange, Franklin, Massachusetts, USA). I have a photo of Gretchen & two other people of similar age that says "Bill & Helen Bierma" on the back. I assume these must be her cousins & that Grietje Bierma had at least one brother, perhaps named William as well. My great aunt had made some notes before she died about a Willem Bierma, but she did not indicate his relationship to Grietje.

Pieter Willems & Anje look like a good fit. This is interesting though, because I have Peter Bierma & Anje in my tree. The only immigration record I could find for Grietje is with their family in 1867. This would not match up with the story that she came to America with her aunt, but if this is her & those are her parents, it would be wonderful to know. I will have to locate her death certificate and find my source for her birth date. The immigration record also lists children: Willem male age 16, Anje female age 16, Harke f. age 11, Lepke f. age 3, and Gerino m. age 6 mos.

I'm not sure where my grandmother got the Dijkema name from. She seemed to know the name and really think it was Grietje's mother's maiden name. I will ask her about it again. I would be interested to know if you find records for any other children of Pieter Willems & Anje Bierma. I find it curious that two children are age 16 in 1867. Perhaps one of them came with THEIR aunt & uncle instead.

The following birth matches the name and birth date that you gave for your gg-grandmother--except it says 1855, not 1853. If correct, her mother was a Bos rather than a Dijkema, but her grandmother was a Dekman, which is similar to Dijkema. Do you think this could be correct?

Source Civil register - Birth
Archive location Groninger Archieven
General Municipality: Stedum
Type of record: geboorte [birth]
Record number: 9
Registration date: 07-02-1853
Child Grietje Bierma
Gender: V [vrouw = female)
Date of birth: 06-02-1853 [6 Feb 1853]
Place of birth: Garsthuizen gem.

My 2nd great grandmother was named Grietje Bierma. She was b. 6 Feb 1855 in Holland / Netherlands & immigrated to Chicago, IL with her aunt when she was 14 years old to be a nanny. I am curious about her because my aunt, cousin, & cousin's daughter are all named Gretchen after her.

According to my grandmother, Grietje's mother's maiden name was DIJKEMA. Her mother's birth date would most likely be sometime between 1815-1838. I don't speak Dutch so I am having trouble navigating the Dutch genealogy websites. I am wondering if anybody knows of, or could easily look up, any Bierma / Dijkema family connections - specifically marriage records in Holland between 1830 to 1855? I would appreciate any help you could offer.

Have a list of other siblings as well. Parents of Ida emigrated to USA in 1885. Seems some family members spelled Ida's name as Adah.
Please reply.

I am looking for the descendents of Wybe Dykema who was born in Michigan Abt. 1869. His parents names are Cornelius & Derkje. He died in Holland, Michigan on 10/15/1906. As far as I know he was unmarried at the time. I believe that he fathered a child with my great-grandmother. That child would have been placed for adoption, but I've been unable to find any record of his/her birth.

I have been doing a some searching for records for Derkje looks like I have to go the the Ottawa Co. Court house to check the marriage and death certificates. Kornelis Dijkema and family are not on the 1870 census. (they might have died before then) Have not been able to get full access to the 1860 census what I have seen I have not been able to find them. I did find Kornelis and family on the 1850 census before Derkje was born.

Cornelis 35, Anne 29 and Martje 3 73a

I found Derjke on the 1880 census with Willem Brouwer her name on that census is Hattie and it does say that she was born in Michigan and her parents in the Netherlands. So it is seeming even more possible that this is a match.

Roeltje and Alice were named for Willem's parents. IF they were following the Dutch naming pattern, that would mean Anna and Cornelius were named for Derkje's parents. Of that list, the following seems to be a match, but it would mean that Derkje was born in the US, not NL. You really need to look at Derkje's marriage and death certificates. I will see if I can find a marriage for this couple. Yes, in 1843.

Kornelis Derks Dijkema from Bierum (Groningen) came to Grand Haven, MI in 1849 with wife Antje Berends Dijkema and two kids: Martje 2 and Dirk 1. He was a 34-year-old carpenter. They arrived in New York on the Garonne on July
3, 1849.

Source Civil register - Marriage
Archive location Groninger Archieven
General Municipality: Bierum
Type of record: Huwelijksakte
Record number: 7
Registration date: 29-05-1843
Bridegroom Kornelis Derks Dijkema
Place of birth: Bierum
Bride Anje Berends Westing
Place of birth: Bierum
Father bridegroom Derk Hindriks Dijkema
Mother bridegroom Wipke Kornelis
Father bride Berent Tiddes Westing
Mother bride Martje Freerks
Additional information beroep bruidegom: timmerman; beroep moeder bruidegom: werkvrouw; bruidegom 29 jaar; bruid 22 jaar

Benny could have been named for Berent, and Mary for Martje. Besides looking at those 2 certificates, it would be helpful to look at census reports for 1860 and 1870, although I don't think kids are named in 1860. If this proves to be your family, I would be happy to look for parents and siblings of Kornelis and Anje for you.

Joan

Katie -
My great grandmother came to the US from the Netherlands. She came with her husband, a son and 3 daughters. My grandmother (Helen) was 14 at the time. They settled in Holland, MI but soon after arriving here my great grandfather died and my great grandmother married a man from Muskegon named Dykema. I believe her name entering the country was Hattie Westerhouse but from the time I was old enough to remember it was Hattie Dykema. I never knew my Grandpa Dykema because he died, I believe before I was born in 1953. I don't know if he was related to family you are looking for or not but my Grandmother and Great-Grandmother both lived in Muskegon until their deaths. My grandmother's name was Helen Larabee (Westerhouse when she came to this country). My great-Grandma Dykema did not have any children with Great-Grandpa Dykema.
