James, it is too bad you did not have a chance to interact with Marjorie she was a nice lady and a great genelogist.

If you have not gotten or seen the histories she wrote on the Dikeman family, you should try and do so.

One of the sad things about genealogy is discovering a distant cousin soon after their passsing. Her and i are very distant cousins, but still I would have like to have shared notes with her.

James Green

I'm trying to find cousins from even 2 or 3 generations back. I don't know who ANY of them are. My ggf had like 6 brothers and sisters. I never met any of them and don't know of any of their kids, grandkids or ggkids who would be my cousins.

My dad's mum was a Dykeman so would he be eligible to do the YDNA test or does the subject have to be the son of one of the male descendents ?

You can contact me at sm.connors@gmail.com

Hello,

My name is Megan Dykeman, My father is Ronald Wellington Dykeman Jr. His father was Ronald Wellington Dykeman Sr. from Woodstock New Brunswick.

Bernice Boyd Dykeman was my fathers Grandfather, he had a farm on Holton Rd. in New Brunswick. Gershon or Gersham (spelling varies) Wellington Dykeman he was my fathers great-great grandfather who's homestead was in the Jemseg, across the river and a little east of Fredericton, we have a picture of his homestead. Garret Dykeman came up from New Amsterdam on the Neptune.

There is mention of the Dykeman's in a book written by Ester Clark-Wright called "The History of the Saint John River Valley". I am hoping I can find it in my boxes.

I am hoping to connect with some more of my paternal extended family. I am willing to offer any info I have in trade for info others have.

Thank you and happy new year.

The DYKEMAN PROJECT is connected to the DITEMAN PROJECT through FTDNA and finally has confirmed YDNA.

The Diteman Project (legitimate through FTDNA and not administered by VICK or his associate SDW) should not be confused by the "DYCKMAN PROJECT" which LRVick has set up with FTDNA. The YDNA used by Vick to set that DYCKMAN Project up, did not come from a Dyckman. FTDNA can confirm this.

PLEASE..IF YOU WANT TO BE dna/ydna TESTED, CONTACT FTDNA DIRECTLY. They will figure out if you should join a project, and if so, which project is legitimate. Not bogus projects set up by someone who wants desperately to administer something, close to granny's last name.

PLEASE CONTACT FTDNA...

Certainly true, nobody needs to join a project to get tested. Nor does anyone need to share genealogy or DNA test results in order to take advantage of those who are open enough to share.

You appear to be very knowledgable about DNA testing. Please explain how you decide to share your DNA results - is someone else supposed to give their results to you first then you decide if you want to share. How do you decide if you match or not - many results are close but not exact matches? Does the sharing person have any say in whether you share in return? And if someone shares with you how to they do that - through a project web site where you are the administrator? And when they share with you do they know who you are? And how do you confirm they are genuine?

With all your concerns about privacy I am curious about what your specific issues are. Unspecified fears are refered to as paranoia which is unreasonable by definition. I prefer to address my fears head on.

But obviously your fears don't even allow you to say who you are or what your relationship is to any of the surnames. And clearly you are not interested in reading what I wrote otherwise you would have seen I already answered your question about my ancestry.

Ray Vick

Dear Mr. Vick,

As is clear, you are quite obsessive with your interest in the DNA of others. You wrote:

"I also have to question what fears he has in sharing YDNA results."

No Mr. Vick, no one has anything to "hide." As with family trees/information/history every researcher on ancestry.com and FTDNA has the CHOICE to keep their information private.

As far as FTDNA, the company is quite capable of notifying a testee of a match, and allowing those who match to communicate.

As far as mistakes being made in research or even typos here on the posts, they happen. No big deal. Nothing to get upset over.

Just want folks to know they do not need an administrator to be tested. That's fair, and I believe good, solid information.

P.S. We ARE related to DIJKEMAN. How about you?

I am not sure what the previous post was all about but let me try and address what I think I read.

Since the poster does not indentify his connection to any of the families I have to question what he was trying to accomplish and wonder if he can show any connection to Dyckman, etc. I also have to question what fears he has in sharing YDNA results. Regarding what YDNA, mtDNA and autosomal DNA testing can do, just remember if anyone has a preconceived idea about their ancestry, DNA testing might confirm or REFUTE that idea.

Regarding the openess or lack thereof of "those researcgers", in case that was aimed at me in part, to see my Dykeman ancestry go to the project site where it is posted on the Patriachs page. Also I welcome any Dyckman, etc as a co-admin of the project.

I am a participant in the Vick YDNA project where my YDNA results and pedigree are posted under Lannes Vick, my maternal genealogy and mtDNA results are available to anyone on request, and if you join 23&me I will readily offer to compare my YDNA, mtDNA and autosomal DNA results with you. Unfortunately I am the only member of 23&me who has posted a Dyckman/Dykeman or variant name genealogy.

Regarding general genealogies for Dyckman, etc, I have sources for public and semi-public information on some lines. If the poster has specific information on mistakes in any of these genealogies he should let everyone know what the mitakes are.

After all aren't we in this to expand COMMON knowledge as well as knowledge specific to our lines?

To anyone interested in DNA or YDNA (male only) testing.

FTDNA.com (Family Tree DNA) is a company which hosts YSEARCH.com (clearinghouse of sorts, for DNA/YDNA testees).

Please understand, that you may test ANONYMOUSLY or make the CHOICE to JOIN a surname project, which will be administered by a surname administrator.

There are SMALL DISCOUNTS for those who test and join a surname project with FTDNA. SMALL being keyword.

FTDNA also runs discounts, and you can contact FTDNA to find out about these. I urge anyone who is testing (DNA or YDNA) to just take the best test possible. If you test a small number of markers, you will likely find you will match hundreds of others, with no real possibility of connecting to a common ancestor (say within 20 generations).

Interestingly, some of those researcgers who are urging you to join their "projects," are researchers who themselves cannot test or prove their own connection at least through DNA. Some of these researchers do not even allow their own family trees to be posted publicly on ancestry (private trees), yet they WANT YOUR DNA/YDNA results.

Seems as if the DNA testing has shown some very aggressive researchers whose intent is to administer surname DNA.

You MAY test ANONYMOUSLY with any company, and you WILL have the OPTION to be NOTIFIED of matches, and if there are rrelevant matches, you will have the CHOICE to contact the match through email. You do not need to have anyone adminstering your DNA/YDNA.

Let's not forget...we have all made mistakes in genealogy. In the case of some surnames, researchers have denied connections which may now prove their work was wrong. Controlling results is very important to those researchers.

Just some information.

Moses eh - that would make us something like 5th cousins.

We have a couple of orders pending and a couple of prospects including a Dykeman and a Dyckman. The orders pending are Family Finder so will go far beyond YDNA.

Hi there, I just stumbled upon this page. I have been researching my Dykeman genaology recently and would like to know if I can be of any assistance. I am descended from Garret's son Moses.

Any information on your project would be appreciated.

Kris

Once we get a few members in our Dyckman/Dykeman DNA project we will probably be able to tell which Dyckman/Dykeman etc are related to which.

If your surname is Dyckman, Dykeman or some variant please tell your immediate family to consider this.

Ray

I am pleased to report there is now a Dyckman/Dykeman and related surnames DNA project at www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/dyckman. I am the Group Administrator.

The testing company also has a Dyckman/Dykeman info page at http://www.familytreedna.com/group-join.aspx?Group=Dyckman

As time allows I will be adding to the project site. Right now it is pretty basic. I have an introduction and one set of Dyckman Y-DNA results I found on Ysearch. I will soon be posting my line back to Jan Dyckman. But since I don't carry Dykeman Y-DNA I won't be any help in that area.

Now what we need is to get some members. If it's too costly for any one individual then you can pool your funds. We do not need more than one male member from any set of close Dykeman-surnamed cousins, brothers, uncles, etc. I will contribute $35 to a test of any of my Canadian male Dykeman cousins descended from Hazen Gilbert Dykeman.

The test is simple and quick. It only involves cheek swabs. Eventually when there are members from several Dyckman, Dykeman and related surnames we will be able to tell how we are related and hopefully discover more about our extended family.

Email me with any questions.

Lannes (Ray) Vick - LRAYVICK@cox.net

PS - those of you on this list surnamed Dykeman probably already know that Garret Dykeman's original surname was Dyckman. Of course we are also including such variants as Dickman and others in the project.
Nancy, Yes, I was going by Marjorie's book for burial info but did have Hiram's death as 1/3/1888. I had no info on "Jane". I did have a total of ten children for them Elizabeth abt 1848; Guilson Bradbury 3/2/1850; Stephen Edward 12/4/1851; John abt 1854; Cordelia M. abt 1856; Fred H. July 1860; Frank H. abt 1860; (were Fred and Frank twins?)Josephine abt 1866; Harry abt 1869 and Estell abt 1873.The only positive burials I have is on Stephen E., his wife - Julia Ann (Adkisson), and they are at Babbitt Cemetery. There was also a Giles A. Dykeman (1886-1964) but I didn't know who he belonged to. I found the census'. Thanks anyway. If you have any other info on Hiram's family I would apprciate any insight you can provide.

Vicki S.

Vicki- The one buried in the Cuba cemetery is Guilson B, and not sure he's buried there since it states only his date of birth in the cemetery record. Since in the 1880 census Stephen, son of Hiram and Jane, who is also listed as living with them, may very well be Ellison's father. Ellison is listed on the 1900 Census living with Fred, a brother of Stephen, and is listed as his nephew. Jane is listed as living next door with her son or daughter. Another nephew is also listed with Fred. They were living in Wisconsin, I believe. I could e-mail you that Census page if you like. Marjorie's information on Hiram is incomplete and incorrect. He did live after 1850 and had several more children than the two listed in the book. Please let me know if this helps or just creates more questions!! Happy hunting!
Thank you so much for your response to my post. I believe the Jacob Dyckman I am looking for is the son of Nicholas Dyckman and had been married before he married Hannah. He is noted in Marjorie Chamberlain's book and she shared the same opinion. I have been trying to find information about his first wife (Elizabeth ?) and what became of her. She was from Columbia County. If you have any information about either Nicholas or Jacob's first wife I would be very interested. Also, would be happy to share info from Marjorie Chamberlain's book.

The first Dyckman (later changed to Dykeman), Johannes, arived in NY in 1851 to take charge of the Dutch West Indies Company in Albany NY. His son John moved to Columbia Co just west of Elizaville. In 1710 he was the capt. of Robert Livingston's Malita and his son was the drummer boy. Capt. Dyckman moved to Conn. His son stayed in this area. I can not prove relationship for there were little or no records kept in this area in the 1700's and 1800'. My great great grandfather lived on Camp Rd (then called stove pipe alley) in the mid 1800's He had 15 children. Some I cant trace. Across the road lived a William Dykeman with his family. I don't know if this helps you any but it might intrest yoy.

I am happy to report we have the first YDNA testee from the Dykeman, Diteman, Dyckman, etc clan. FTDNA has a new Diteman & variants DNA project with its first member being tested - a Diteman who may connect to the UEL Dykemans of New Brunswick Canada and NY. He thinks he is descended from Garret's son Moses.

Now if only some other of the line will test we can see what Jan and descendants YDNA looks like and connect the variant families.

My grandmother was a Dykeman of the UEL Gilbert Hatfield Dykeman. They always pronounced the name as Diteman.

She also wrote and published two Genelogies on the Dyckman/Dikeman/Dykeman families.

She was a great genealogist and a remarkable woman.
Found a James Dykeman born in Canada 1920 census age 43 single. Nettie is still married to Henry Treat at this time and living in Embden, Somerset, Maine. They must have married after 1920.Her three sons are in the household along with his parents aged 73 and 75. Nettie is listed as age 39 so depending on when she remarried as to children.

Diana
The Diechmann Family you refer to were famous potters from the New Brunswick area. I believe they were Norwegian in origin. Mrs. Diechmann married the Hon. Milton F. Gregg after her first husband's death. I do not believe they are related to the Dyckman/Dykeman Family originating in New York City with Jan Thank you
