Re: Elias Eagles, 1st hus to Mary Crook who later m. Robert Knell, dau ~ Elizabeth Eagles m. to Prime Thornton Coleman

In reply to your question of what happened to Elias Eagles..lst husband to Mary Crook Eagles. They lived in Nauvoo, Illinois..when the Nauvoo Saints were required to leave Nauvoo, She went on ahead to Winter Qtrs where she waited for Elias to join her. He never came. While serving as an LDS Nauvoo, Illinois Missionary, I did research on what happened to Elias Eagles. I never felt he would desert his family. While in Nauvoo, descendents of Mary Crook Knell came to Nauvoo and I talked to them. I expressed my feelings that he may have tried to earn money so he could join her., by joining the military. They followed thro on this suggestion and found out that Elias Eagles had joined the Military and was killed in the Battle At Shiloh under General Grant. His death was recorded in a journal kept by a fellow soldier. these records can be found in the military online records of the Battle at Shiloh. Good Luck in retrieving these records and finding peace in what happened to Elias Eagles.

Dear Neil,

Thank you so much for replying to my Ancestry posting. I placed it on Ancestry so long ago now that I had quite forgotten about it so your e-mail was a very pleasant surprise.

I dont know how much information you have on William Eagles but what you said regarding his son George is, I'm afraid, incorrect. I have a copy of the Bloxham Parish register and it was William (1765) who married Sarah Faulkner in 1972. They had eight children, one of whom was George, born 1802.

George (my great, great, great grandfather) married Lucy Mace in 1827 and they had seven children one of whom was also named George. I have managed to trace the life of George junior up until 1881 but then he disapears from the records. At one time he was a shepherd but by 1881 he was simply a farm labourer and living with his wife Ann, their son William and his father, George senior, at the Joiners Arms cottage, Bloxham.

After this date George junior and his family disappear from the records and there is no trace of them until the 1901 English Census. Now George is listed as a "farmer" and as an "employer" so he has obviously prospered during the intervening years. Maybe it was this George who went to New Zealand, made some money and then returned to England. Could this George be your descendent?

I would very much like to see your family tree (providing you dont mind) as I am in the process of writing up the family history and setting in the historical and economic context
of the time. Adding your branch of the family would be a great boost to the project. I would be quite happy to either e-mail what I have so far or send you a disc if that is what you would prefer.

I'm sure you must now have some questions and queries of your own so please dont hesitate to contact me. My e-mail address is eagles.nick@ymail.com

Very much looking forward to hearing from you soon,

Very best wishes,

Nick Eagles.

EAGLES/EAGELL DNA study

The EAGLES/EAGELL DNA genealogy study has received a small donation covering a male DNA test for someone with this surname who has documented pre-19th century ancestors in Britain. Preference will be given to persons with the earliest documented British EAGLES/EAGELL patriline. Persons living anywhere in the world may apply.

If you are interested in helping with the DNA project, discovering near ancestral relatives with the same and different surnames, and determining the early migration pattern of prehistorical ancestors, please respond.

Results are published using only early ancestor information, and not the testee's information.

Michael Swanson

Edward was born in 1905 (I think in Poplar, London) I cannot find any records for him after he married Mary Wenbourne ( Wenborn, Wenborne ) many ways of spelling this. Edward and Mary married around 1931 and they had a daughter Mary Je. Nothing else can be found, so I am suspecting they have left England. Marys brother was in NZ at the time, so am hoping they may have immigrated there. If anyone can help please make contact

My GGG grandfather was William Eagles, who lived in Camberwell. I have some further information about him and his family. Here is some information about him.

@1817: Born in Chertsey, Surrey, son of gardener Jarvis Eagles [born abt 24 Feb 1782 in Yattendon, Berks] and Rosetta.

1839: Living in Thorpe at time of marriage to Eliza Wigley, servant, who lived in Chertsey.

1841: In Chertsey with Eliza and son WIlliam [6 mo]. Next door neighbours are about 25 yr old brother Benjamin and Maria Eagles. Benjamin is probably a brother.

1861: At Gate Lodge to Camden Lodge, St, Giles, Camberwell [London South bank], working as a gardener. Children at home are Thomas [16 -- labourer at gunboat factory in Deptford]; Stephen [11 - scholar]; and daughter Mary Ann [8 - scholar]. They are next to the Forrester's Arms public house.

1881: Living with Eliza and a grandchild named Stephen at 11 Nunhead Cottage in Camberwell. Note that his age and birthplace are now given differently. The age may well be correct, but the census taker seems to have crossed the birthplaces between William and Eliza. South Moreton, Berkshire is Eliza's birthplace.

Dear Nigel,

Thank you for the e-mail regarding the Eagles family of Bloxham. Strangely, I have just returned from Bloxham, where I had lunch with Alison Smith and her husband Martin. (Alison, as you might know, is the granddaughter of Elizabeth Eagles, sister to Henry.)

After three years of research and collecting copious notes I finally began to arrange them in some form of order at the end of last year. I haven't finished yet but if you send me your address I can print off what I have (about 50 pages) and send them to you.

I have set what I know in the socio-economic context of the time, in an attempt to gain a true "feel" for what Eagles family members experienced. Whether or not I have succeeded I dont know but I am only too glad to pass on too you what I have.

If you want to write to me direct my address is:

244 St. Saviours Road, Leicester, LE5 3SH.

Looking forward to hearing from you,

Best wishes,

Nick Eagles

Please contact me directly at raineg@montanahr.com. I will share everything I have about William. I found Thomas's son Stephen in the 1881 census, but then things go cold, except Free BMD has a Stephen Eagles marrying in Poplar in Mar 1900, either to Elizabeth Sarah Bradbrook or Sophia Elizabeth Celiz.

George Raine

I saw your post asking about Eagles in Camberwell. My GGGGrandfather was William Eagles, born in Chertsey, Surrey about 1820. Later in life he moved to Camberwell. In 1861 he was living at Gate Lodge to Camden Lodge, St, Giles, Camberwell and working as a gardener. Children at home are Thomas [16 -- labourer at gunboat factory in Deptford]; Stephen [11 - scholar]; and daughter Mary Ann [8 - scholar]. They are next to the Forrester's Arms public house. In 1881 he is living with Eliza and a grandchild [Thomas's son Stephen] at 11 Nunhead Cottage in Camberwell. I am descended through his oldest son, William, born 1840. William was a boilermaker at Yarrows shipyard in Poplar when his daugher Eleanor was born in 1867. Eleanor married my G Grandfather George Raine, an engine fitter and later a marine engineer. Is this line of any interest to you?

George Raine

The Eagles / Eagell / Eagle Y-DNA Project

Are all EAGLES related? Does your yDNA match other lines of the same name? What part of Europe does this line come from?

The first participant in the Eagles DNA Project has NO matches to anyone in the world DNA database, which is quite unusual. However, he is a near match to many McClellans and its variant spellings, suggesting a relation to this Scottish clan.

Please consider joining this project to help build the history on this family.

http://www.familytreedna.com/public/Eagles/

Eagles / Eagell / Eagle Y-DNA Project

http://www.familytreedna.com/public/Eagles/

Project Background:

The Eagles / Eagell / Eagle Y-DNA Project seeks Y-DNA participants with the last name Eagles, Eagle, Eagell, or its variants. These surnames are thought to have originated in Europe. It is the primary purpose of this project to document the Y DNA of the patrilineal Eagles lines in Europe and in the countries to which they immigrated.

Douglas Eaton Eagles's book, EAGLES FAMILIES OF NORTH AMERICA* (updated in 2006, 2 vols.), extensively documents the Eagles of North America. According to this book, one of the largest North American families with the surname Eagles has as its progenitor John Eagell (wife Laurene), a "Planter" who came to Nova Scotia about 1763 when he was granted former Acadian lands in Horton Township.

In North America there are several Eagles lines which may share a common ancestry in Europe. Extensive research on the North American lines, primarily by Douglas Eaton Eagles, has so far failed to connect them to Europena counterparts. It is hoped that through this DNA project that these connections can be made.

Joining

Please click on the join link in the upper left corner of the project webpage. If you have already been tested through FTDNA, just enter you code and join this project for free. If you have not been tested, then using this same link you can purchase a basic 12-marker Y DNA test for $99, but it is suggested that you purchase a 37-marker or 67-marker test for genealogical comparisons. The basic test may not have enough information to make solid genealogical connections, i.e., the basic kit will not differentiate between near and distant cousins. Note: Test kit shipping to countries outside the USA is very inexpensive, about $4.

Hi Jess
Totally intrigued by your chat with Howard. Mary Eagles & John Longstreet were my 2x great grandparents. Their daughter Mary Jane was my great grandmother(never knew her), but I remember my great grandfather William Beer(died 1957) very well. I remember once as a kid going over to "Aunt Hattie's" with my grandmother(born Mary Eva Beer). I would be surprised if Aunt Hattie lasted as long as 1963. My grandmother herself died that same year,in her 80's. No hard data here yet, but I thought you might like some input anyway. I'm in the middle of researching my grandfather's (Smith)side of the family (the head count is fast approaching 600).

Dear Nick

I really appreciate your prompt response and your kindness in offering to share your Eagles research. I have just rang my inlaws in Gloucester to tell them that you have been in touch. Equally strange My father in law Derek and wife Jane are meeting up with with Alison's mother Rita next week.

If you could send Derek your Eagles family history notes, I would be eternally grateful, it sounds fascinating. I will look forward to reading them next tine I visit.

Derek's Address Is:

Derek Eagles
7 Pembury Road
St Barnabus
Gloucester
GL4 6UE

Nick, I appreciate that sending a 50 page document through the post is going to put you out of pocket. I would therefore be happy to pay your costs.

Over the last 10 years I have looked at my Dando family history and have not a lot of enjoyment from doing so, It is amazing what one can find out these days. Earlier this week Derek and Jane asked me to take a look at there family tree. Using the census records I was able to get by quite a way but with your help we can put some "meat on the bones" as we say.

Warm regards

Nigel Dando

PS my email address is n.dando2@ntlworld.com
and home address is:
23 Brynglas Road
Newport
South Wales
NP20 5QY

Hi Nick

I am trying to help my father in law Derek Eagles (born Bloxham 1926) trace his family tree and would really appreciate your help.
His father Henry Eagles born Bloxham 1893 ran the CO-OPERATIVE store in the village. Henry (1859) is Derek’s grandfather, he told me about Henry’s work as a gardener at the mansion house.

If you are able to help Derek go back further with his family tree that would be wonderful.

Warm regards

Nigel

Hello Gloria

I have found a marriage between Frederick C Eagles and Ruth Cook in Epsom in the March 1/4 of 1929.Ref 2a page 29.

I then searched the births from that date until the end of 1936.The only slightly possible one is Frederick D(Poss Derek?)Eagles with a mothers maiden name of Cook born Doncaster( ???) which is in Yorkshire,in the Dec 1/4 of 1929.

Seems fairly soon after the wedding ,so perhaps they DID go up north for the birth so no questions would be asked- just a thought.

Hope this helps

Carol
