I am a great great granddaughter of Francis Asbury. I have a photograph of him from about 1838 or 1840 (actually a carte de viste) and it is possible that the man on the left is him, as the eyes are similar to those in the earlier photograph and he also greatly resembles a photograph of his son Isaac as an older man. I am also related to the Wilcox's on my grandmother's side. Her maiden name was Stoddard, she married Francis's grandson Clare Logan Secor, and her sister Jessie Stoddard married a Wilcox.

Go to ysearch.org & do a search on the surname Eagleton. Two results will appear. These are both for descendants of David Eagleton.

At the Family Tree DNA webpage for either (which is password protected), a list of all people, regardless of surname, who have a relevant match will appear. Most Pettigrews are within a 1 or 2 step mutation of David Eagleton.

Re: Origins of David Eagleton

Yes. First of all, I have had two patrilineal descendants of David Eagleton tested, a descendant of James Eagleton (b 1794) and a descendant of Alexander (b 1788). The good news -they have a perfect match, so we know that both represent the y-DNA of David Eagleton.

Both also match the Pettigrew/ Petticrew family, but at a slightly more distant level. The Petticrew family comes from Lanark, Scotland. I was stunned to discover that one of the old families from that area is Eglinton.

I now wonder if our family was really the Scottish Eglinton family & the name got reduced in America. A logical progression that is easy to see would be: Eglinton to Eglenton, then Eglenton to Egleton, then Egleton to Eagleton. This wouldn't really much of a change.

Of course, regarless of whether our branch is really Eagleton or Eglinton, they still match the Petticrew/ Pettigrew family a few centuries earlier & the Petticrew group claims to be of French origin, by way of Scotland.

Timothy Peterman

Eaglesham or Eglinton?

A number of people researching the origins of David Eagleton (1748-1828) have suggested that his original surname in Scotland was Eaglesham. I have never seen a good explanation as to why people think this, other than the fact that there is a village named Eaglesham.

The y-DNA results for David Eagleton show high resolution relevant matches to a Petticrew family, whose descendants maintain that they are from Lanark in Lanarkshire, Scotland. This is only about 20 miles from Eaglesham in Renfrewshire. The Most Recent Common Ancestor (MRCA) may have lived anywhere from 300 to 500 years ago.

The results led me to investigate Lanark. Imagine how surprised I was to learn that there was a family named Eglinton that lived there in past centuries.

So was Eagleton derived from Eaglesham or Eglinton? The simplest transformation would actually be from Eglinton to Eagleton. Vowels can change with greater ease than consonants. Eglinton to Eagleton just requires the deletion of the middle "n", which makes it easier to say the name. Eaglesham to Eagleton actually requires "sh" to be replaced by "t" and "m" to be replaced by "n". The latter could easily happen, but "sh" to "t" is unlikely.

I suggest that David Eagleton researchers consider that Eglinton may have been the surname in Scotland & that Lanarkshire might be a plausible place to look.

Timothy Peterman

Lee Eagleton took the y-DNA test last summer. His results matched 37 out of 37 with Larry Eagleton. Lee is descended from Alexander (b 1788) & Larry from James (b 1794). David's results have thus been triangulated.

The fascinating thing is that David Eagleton has numerous close matches at a high resolution. All are surnamed Petticrew and claim to originate in Lanark, Lanarkshire, Scotland. I was stunned to discover that another family that came from that town was named Eglinton & I am beginning to wonder if this was the pre-Eagleton surname in Scotland.

I could write a lot more about the implications.

Timothy Peterman
Kansas City, MO

I am searching for my g grandfather John Eagleton (name now Eagleson) who would have been born arounf 1855 (I don't know where) and would have died between 1883 and 1889 (again I don't know where)

The only fact I have is that when he married my g grandmother in 1876 he was a soldier and his address wqas given as Victoria Barracks in Belfast. I have had the military records searched at Kew, London with no results. A story from his granddaughter said he went away to work and never returned. (I have no idea where)

I am hoping that someone may have an individual or event that might tie up to John and maybe give me a break through.

For anyone researching Eagleson/ Eagleton events in Norhtern Ireland, I believe have all the pre 1922 marriage events and some Southern ones listed on my website at www.vyger.co.uk

I just got interested in geneology about 3 weeks ago and am just learning about the resources available on the web. In tracing the Eagleton line on the Rootsweb message boards, found several of your contributions. Was amazed to see Mable Richart's name. Her brother, Ota Earl, was my Grandfather.

RE: David Eagleton (1748-1828) it is my understanding that Mary Kelly was his 2nd wife. !st was Eleanor ?, and she was mother of John and Mary. Not sure of source of this information!

I am looking forward to learning a great deal more about my lineage. At this point don't know enough to ask good questions.
If any male Eagletons happen to attend this reunion, try to persuade at least one of them to take the y-DNA test offered by Family Tree DNA. I had a 3rd cousin of mine, a great-great grandson of Alexander Malcolm Eagleton (1827-1901) and Fanny (Bauguess) Eagleton take the test. The results were stunning and probably contain an important clue to the earlier Eagleton ancestry. The results need to be corroborated. A male patrilineal descendant of James Eagleton and Margaret (Montgomery) Eagleton would do, although it would be better to find a patrilineal descendant of David Eagleton (1748-1828) through a different son. I will gladly pay for the test.

Also, while doing research last December in Greene Co., TN, I think I found a good clue as to the identity of David Eagleton's first wife.

Timothy Peterman
Kansas City, MO

Origins of David Eagleton

Two descendants of David Eagleton (1748-1828) have had their y-DNA tested. One descends from David's son, James (1794-1877); the other descends from David's son, Alexander (1788-1868). The good news -the two match. The results can be considered to be those of David Eagleton himself, since he was their Most Recent Common Ancestor (MRCA).

This leads to a shell-shocking conclusion that all serious Eagleton genealogists should pay attention to: The results confirm a surname switch.

David Eagleton's results confirm that in his patriline, he was part of the Petticrew or Pettigrew family. We don't know when or how the surname changed, but with numerous high resolution matches to the Petticrew/ Pettigrew family, that is the most likely possibility. Some might suggest that maybe the opposite happened: Petticrew is derived from Eagleton. There is enough diversity in the Petticrew results to suggest that their common ancestor lived perhaps a millenium ago. Yet, the MRCA between some of the Petticrew family & that of David Eagleton lived a mere 300, plus or minus, years ago.

The surname switch from Petticrew/ Pettigrew to Eagleton probably happened in David Eagleton's generation, or that of his father, or grandfather -perhaps at the time of immigration to America. This might explain why reasonably good evidence of David Eagleton's origins in Scotland or Northern Ireland have never been found.

Timothy Peterman
Kansas City, MO

Re: link between Eagleton and Pettigrew family???

I haven't figured out what really happened; although it is an intriguing mystery. Here are the facts:

1. David Eagleton, an early resident of East Tennessee & noted Presbyterian (1748-1828), told his children he was from Scotland (which could mean he was Ulster Scot).

2. Eagleton descendants trying to deal with the genealogy can't find the Eagleton surname in Scotland; the best sources in Scotland deny that Eagleton is a Scottish name; so various people have tried to make the name a variation of Eaglesham.

3. Enter DNA testing: I had a 3rd cousin of mine take the y-DNA test. His father was Lawrence Eagleton, son of Arthur, son of John, son of Alexander, son of James, son of David Eagleton (1748-1828). The paper trail says this cousin is a patrilineal descendant of David Eagleton & his y-DNA should be identical to David Eagleton.

4. This cousin has no matches named Eagleton, presumably because NO OTHER DESCENDANTS of David Eagleton have been tested. We NEED to get at least one more patrilineal descendant of David tested to triangulate the first results. If they match, both results could be said positively to be that of David Eagleton. If they don't match, we a re back to Square One.

5. This Eagleton cousin has numerous matches in the Pettigrew family (which is Scottish, if I understand things right).

The most parsimonious explanation goes like this:

1. David "Eagleton" or an immediate ancestor was actually a Pettigrew.

2. This explains: a) why we can't find David's Eagleton ancestors in Scotland, and b) why my cousin has many high resolution matches to the Pettigrew family.

But before any of us should invest much time or money in the "Eagleton really Pettigrew" theory, WE NEED TO GET ANOTHER PATRILINEAL DESCENDANT OF DAVID EAGLETON TESTED.

I put the above statement in bold caps to drive home the point that we need to get another descendant of David Eagleton tested & someone might just be reading this who is a patrilineal descendant of David's. If such a person is out there, CONTACT ME:

Timothy E. Peterman
TEPeter100@aol.com
Photo ID: Couple with Jane Josephine Secor & Francis Lazell Wilcox

I have obtained a copy of a photo of two previously unknown couples, which is attached to this posting.

The couple on the right is believed to be Jane "Jennie" Josephine Secor and Francis Lazell Wilcox, her husband.

They were married on 04 Apr 1866 in Monroeton, Bradford, Pennsylvania, USA. They and their children joined the LDS Church (Mormon) and migrated to Saunders county, Nebraska in the spring of 1877, and came to the Utah Territory by 05 Feb 1879. They later moved to the Preston, Franklin, Idaho, USA area.

I believe that the unidentified woman may be one of Jane's sisters: Hester Elizabeth Secor Rhodes, Menerva Elvira Secor Weldy, Amanda Melvina Secor Eagleton, Frances Emaline Secor Schoonover, Adeline Ophelia Secor Lewis (who were born in Lackawanna county, PA), Mary Adelia Secor (who was born in Delaware county, PA), or her sister-in-law, Rose L. Miller Secor (her husband was born in Berks county, PA).

We believe that the unidentified man might be their father, Francis Asbury Secor, or his half-brother, Theron Secord.

Is anyone out there related to the unknown couple (on the left), and can help me identify them?

Andy

They were living close to
Nashville, TN. You might try locating Kenneth and Marvis' children. I think a couple of them live in Maricopa Co., AZ and two may still be in TN, either Davidson County or Cheatham Co.
My sister and myself are planning a reunion in Blount Co. (Townsend) TN. for June 2009. Our family (descendants of Leander Oscar Eagleton (1868-1955), has had a reunion every five years for many years now. My sister and mine's Eagleton lineage is through our mother Marilyn Eagleton Zabel (born 1937- Jersey Co, IL), daughter of Clifford E. Eagleton (1905-1995 Peoria Il. to Jersey Co. IL), son of Leander Oscar (1868-1955, Jasper Co. to Peoria, Il), son of William Grant (1833-1876, Jasper Co. IL), son of Alexander R (1788-1868, Blount CO. to Jasper Co. IL), son of David Eagleton (1748-1828 Scotland to Blount Co. TN) and first wife Mary Eleanor Kelly. We just got back from visiting Blount County, TN. and the region. We researched at the Blount County library, as well as visited sited and local historians. We discovered much information about David Eagleton in his early days in Blount CO. According to documents we found, he first arrived in Pennsylvania from Scotland. He then went to Greene Co. TN. (at the time it was North Carolina). He fought in the Revolutionary War and later went to Fort Craig (present day Maryville TN.) because of the ongoing battles with the Cherokee Indians in the region. He owned an extensive amount of land in Blount Co. area. Much of that land is now considered Eagleton Village, outside of Maryville. The first schoolhouse in Blount Co. was named the Eagleton schoolhouse. It is no longer standing, but there is a presently an Eagleton Middle School and an Eagleton Elementary School. These schools were built on the land once owned by David Eagleton. There is an extensive connection between the Clark family of Blount Co. and the Eagletons. They were neighbors in late 1700's and several Clarks married Eagletons.
One of the most interesting documents we discovered was a copy of David Eagleton's will. We discovered it at library. It was written in 1827, a year before his death. The will is handwritten; presumed to be David's. Some parts are unreadable. If anyone is interested in obtaining a copy, you can contact the genealogy dept. at the Blount co. library. It is fascinating to read!
Anybody interested in attending the family reunion, we would love to have you come.
Contact me, Lisa Herman, at herman5@mtco.com if your interested in any further information.
Eggleton Robert - Norfolk, Fakanham about 1870

I am trying to uncover information on the family of Robert Eggleton ( Eagleton / Eagleson ) who would have been born before 1832 and l believe lived in Norfolk, possibly Fakenham around 1871.

His son John, my great grandfather enlisted in the 27th Inniskilling Regiment when they were stationed in Colechester, he was noted as being from Fakenham, came to Belfast with the regiment, married and had children.

On John's marriage certificate in 1876, his father Robert was noted as being a Carpenter & Wheelright by profession.

I have been stuck with the origins of John for many years so this connection is a recent breakthrough and I am hopeful of making contact with others who have connections to this family.

Happy hunting

Jackson
