I still would suggest that you get in Touch with Nancy Stover thru the Centre Co. Hist. Society. A question mark with the name would indicate it's not proven.

I found that on the ancestry.com and it did make sense and I added it at the time and could not get in touch with the person that had it on-line. I never omitted it out but I had found that a John Akin was a head of household in the 1790 census. That was another reason it stayed in the file. I have thought about making it not a public file on ancestry.com as well. When I have the time to find how to get that changed or just to change it, I may just take the whole file as a "not public" file on ancestry.com

I have no idea who is the the father of Hannah Davis. It is entirely possible that it could be Joseph Davis. However Joseph Davis left no court records of any kind. It is quite possile that 2 Eaken Brothers married 2 Davis Sisters. The only thing I could find on Margaret Mc Elhennnie was in a newspaper article on Easton (Wayne Co OH) OH that states Margaret's father was the youngest of 11 sons. It also states that her brother Andrew was with Commodore Perry. That however, is untrue. Andrew never served in the 1812 war. Her brother Robert Eaken did. Check Linn's History.
The reason I said they were Scots-Irish was that the Presbyterian Churchs in the Centre Co area were settled by the Scots-Irish from the Cumberland Valley.
In looking at Rootsweb I noticed you had John Eaken and Margaret Clark as the parents. Where did you get that info?

SO DO YOU HAVE GEORGE'S PARENTS THEN? OR ANYTHING ON HANNAH DAVIS' MOTHER? SO WHERE DO YOU THINK THE NAME
CLARK CAME FROM. I FIGURE GEORGE (BORN 1777) EAKEN'S MOTHER WAS A CLARK? ANY THOUGHTS ON THAT? THE OBITUARY
OF MARGARET EAKEN MC ELHENEY BORN 1794 SAYS THAT HER FATHER WAS ONE OF 12 SONS. WHERE DO YOU THINK THE EAKEN FAMILY CAME FROM BEFORE CENTRE COUNTY? WHEN DO YOU THINK THEY CAME FROM IRELAND?

Linn's History, Pg. 407- Joseph Davis came from New Jersey. Related by marriage to Johnston. Two sons, Joseph and Cornelius. Daughter Polly Davis married James Eakins who died in Haines Twp. Mrs. Eakins moved to Doylestown,OH.
Polly is the Nickname for Mary as shown in the Orphan Court Records for James where Mary is named the wife. Nowhere does it mention the name Hannah.
You had better check Andrew Eaken's probate record, George Clark Eaken is there. I went to Centre County PA to get the Orphan Court Records, and to Wayne County OH to get Andrew's probate records.

Another thing to cover all bases ....
CENTRE COUNTY, PA. HISTORY BY LINN
States that Hannah (Polly) Davis was daughter of Joseph
Davis from New Jersey, Revolutionary War Soldier.
was married to James Eaken and they lived in Haines twshp
Centre County, Pennsylvania.

This is more complicated now. I had assumed that
George had his own family, James and Hannah, their own,
they both have most named the same. I don't think
George Clark Eaken is one of the men that I have in the
proceedings for the will of Andrew Eaken who died in 1850s.

So their was a brother of James and George called Alexander? I have read that the wife of Joseph Davis, father of Hannah, was related to the Johnson or Johnston
family of Centre County, Pa. I think there was an ALEXANDER JOHNSTON. ARE THE ORPHAN RECORDS ON-LINE?

KEVIN REINHARD
Hannah Davis Eaken died Nov 14 1845. George Eaken died Feb 28 1831. Mary who died in 1844 is an entirely different person than Hannah she was probably the widow of James Eaken, George Eaken's brother. I believe she came to Wayne County OH with Robert Eaken around 1828. Robert was the brother of James, Alexander and George Eaken.
I have found family reunion books notoriously faulty. Possibly they gave James as the father because a cousin named James Eaken/Eakins went to Mary Halliwill's funeral and that was the name they remembered.

I will as soon as I get my scanner hooked up. You might want to contact Nancy Stover in Centre Co PA about the Eaken line. She has been doing research on them. Try the Centre County Hist. Society. I've been to Centre County. I've seen all the Orphans Court Records and they all agree that Mary Eaken daughter of James and Mary, died as did her sisters Catherine, and Hannah Eaken of Potter Twp. They all died in the same week leaving mother, 4 sisters and 3 brothers.
Bellfonte Patriot Oct 1 1823

The Bible was copied in the 1940's by a descendant of George and Hannah's son George Clark Eaken. At that time it was in the possesion of a descendant of Mary and David Halliwell. Mary the daughter of James Eaken died in Sept 1823 as per the orphan cout records, as well as a newspaper abstract dated Oct 1 1823 from Centre County PA. Tha's why Mary Halliwill had the Bible. She was the daughter of George and Hannah Eaken.

that's right. you are a descendent from George Clark Eaken? I have the list of all the children of James Eaken and Hannah Davis. and then James died in about 1818 and kids were put up as wards of the state and Hannah remarried to George Eaken, brother of James.

I have old papers from the old halliwill reunions from
probably the 30's or as late as the 40's that it was stated
that Mary Davis Eaken, born 1810 and was daughter of James Eaken and Hannah Davis. I have had the research with
baptismal record info from Centre County, it all states
James Eaken and Hannah Davis, parents of at least 7-8 children. George Eaken married to Hannah Davis and as far as I know only one child, Lucinda born 1824. Unless you have George's or Hannah's will that states otherwise, there is no other (Mary Eaken) Mary Eaken is Hannah Davis.

kEVIN,
I really don;t think that George ever married James's widow Mary, It is entirely possible that Mary and Hannah were sisters
According to the Bible Record George Eaken was born Feb 7, 1777 and died 28 Feb 1831. Hannah was born apr. 12 1780 and did Nov 14 1845.
Children:
Joseph Eaken born 10 Jun 1804
Catherine Davis Eaken born apr. 18, 1806
James Eaken born Sept 20 1808.
Mary Davis Eaken born 6 Jan 1810 She married David Halliwell. In 1941 one of her descendants had the bible when it was copied.
George Clark Eaken born Feb 12 1812 ( he's my line)
Robert Eaken born 27 August 1813
Jane McKinney (or McHinney ) born February 9 1816
Hannah Clark Eaken born April 24 1817
Walter Andrew Eaken born Jan 17 1822 died February 6, 1861.

George, Robert and James all married Lance girls. The lance and Halliwell families were HUGH, married among the families alot.
The immigrant Lance had around 15 children and they seem to multiply.
Kay Gary
Will e-mail you at home.

So Kay, Are you saying that James Eaken and Hannah Davis were not ever husband and wife? I have the baptismal records for these children from Haines township. I did not research them but J. Marvin Lee did it for me in the 70's! I guess his daughter is doing genealogy now! Also notes from the Halliwill family reunion has Mary Eaken, daughter of James Eaken and Hannah Davis! Then Hannah was a daughter of Joseph Davis. In the Centre County history by Linn, I believe, there is a passage about Polly Davis, daughter of Joseph Davis and sister of Joseph and Cornelius! Also it is stated that Joseph Davis' wife, also mother of Hannah, was related to the Johnson (Johnston) family that settled in Centre County! Also as near as I can make out, Hannah Davis was remarried to George Eaken and they had a daughter Lucinda! I had talked to some of the older people in the 70s that I believe are dead now, there was some mention to her family was related to Mary Eaken Halliwill family! She married George McElwaine (McElvaine). Also it is said that Joseph Davis was a Revolutionary War soldier from New Jersey and he settled in Pennsylvania after the war. How unfortunate it is to trace someone with a very common name, Davis for one and Joseph for the other! I am in Calfornia, may I ask where are you? Oh and there was an obituary for Margaret Eaken McElhennie, as well, in which it states that her father was the youngest of 12 sons! I also have the estate and will for Andrew Eaken, brother-in-law of Hannah Davis Eaken! Would you mind if I gave you a call?

Kevin Reinhard

Am looking for information on Isaac Aiken/Eaken born in VA. abt 1807 who married a Mahala b. 1810 in TN. They were in Monroe County Tenn in 1840, Meigs County Tenn in 1850 and eventually moved to Camden County MO between 1850 and 1860 where they lived for the remainder of their years (or so I believe). My GGGrandfather was their son Andrew J. Eakins of Meigs and Rhea County Tenn.

I am specifically looking for info regarding who Isaac Aiken's parents were and who Mahala's parents were. Isaac may possibly have brother's John, Sam, Isaac, and Thomas who were also residing in McMinn County Tenn in early 1830's.

I have a fairly complete history of Isaac and his lineage from 1807 to current time, but would like to go further back. If you can be of help I would certainly appreciate it and would be willing to share information.
Kevin,
The information I have is from the Centre County Orphans Court records.
According to the Petition Jan 29, 1823 filed for guardianship of children of James and MARY Eaken. Mary being the widow of James Eaken late of Haines Twp.
James has left 7 children three of whom are minors above the age of 14.
John Eaken (1798?)
Christiane Eaken (1802?)
Catherine Eaken (1802?)
Minors above 14. Wm. Johnson appt. guardian.

Minors under 14 of who there are four
James Eaken Jr. (1804?)
Mary (1806?)
Hannah (1808?)
Andrew Eaken (1810?)
Minors under 14 Wm. Rankin Guardian
I have copies of receipts for all 7 children listed above.PLUS
three more daughters who were NOT Minors.
Jane, Margaret, and Sarah.
That would make 10 ant that agrees with the 1810 &1820 Census.
The ( ) dates were fron the History Center in Bellfont.
Charges for boarding from April 11, 1818 arelisted. Also the note Andrew was ages 2 years 6 mos when his father died. James Jr. was 8 years old when his father died. All the charges date from April 11, 1818 so I would image that James died in March or April of 1818.
Please note the (dates) from the History Center and Library don't seem to be correct.
At this point I don't believe that Hannah was ever married to James. The information on George and Hannah are from a family Bible. Not in my possesion.
More on my George and Hannah later. Which of James's children do you descend from?
Kay Gary

My ggggrandmother was Catherine (Eakins) Robb. I was told she was orn in Union County. but have not confirmed. I have found Catherine, her father and siblings in Lamar,Clinton Co.in the mid 1870's. Catherine's parents were Andrew & Ann (Horner)Eakin and her brothers were George, James and Daniel Eakin. Catherine m. William Robb abt. 1829 in Centre Co. William & Catherine had 10 children. I have obtained Andrew's and Catherine's wills. There is a Andrew Eakins buried in Lick Run Cemetery, Centre CO. PA but I believe this would be Catherines grandfather or great Uncle. I would like to find out where Catherine is buried. I have looked all through Centre and Clinton Co. but have not found anything. Any help would be greatly apprecated. Ceil (said like Seal)
