hi Donna,
As your Samuel in the census shows birth at Smallthorne, which is on the boundary of Burslem and Norton parishes in Stoke on Trent, he only matches one born in 1847 . Parents seem to be Joseph and Mary (Holdcroft ), married 1844 at Burslem. His father is dead by 1851 census, but Samuel has two brothers, John and Joseph. Can't find him till 1891, nor any marriage. Possibly he was abroad in army or navy. Mary's listed birthplace of Silverdale is a few miles west of Smallthorne, past Newcastle.
The name Samuel Eardley is frequent, going back to the first one born 1648, died 1727. You should look at all the data on website Eardley.org to help out, esp. sue Parker's geneaology section.
bye pete

Thanks for the promotion ; you'll find the revised essay posted in May with 50% more facts and pinpointing when the first Eardley names appeared in Staffordshire. My intention is to do a second article centred on William Yardley of Horton and Bucks county, with immediate predecessors and siblings relatives.
I note Karen Patterson refers to a Samuel Eardley Will, which perhaps should have read April 1727 ( I didn't get a copy). This is the unknown younger brother of William Yardley (1632 - 1693) of Pennsylvania, and why so many Samuels appear in the Eardley/Yardley geneaologies.

hi.

Yes I did join in with the Eardley message board, with the idea of giving information and also to collect references that I might be able to pass on to members of our group that are researching the Staffordshire Families. Especially those from Audley and its surrounding villages. My wife Mayda has Eardley connections which seem related to those shown on the board. That I answered.

We have Eardley's in Audley going back to1690s This family incorperates, Those of John and Margaret Earley married in1802. Mayda's own line comeing from Johns brother Daniel and his wife Jane nee Birks. We have several other line of descent. from this family line

I hope this answere your question

Mick Witheridge

Sarah A. Eardley m Samuel (John) Jackson 1852 Hereford

I am looking for information on (Samuel) John Jackson. I have seen the name listed as both Samuel J. Jackson (1861 census) and as John Jackson (1871 census). I believe they are the same person. Both entries were living in Hereford.

I have the 1861 Census where he was married to a Sarah A. Jackson, with several children: Fanny, Charles, *Elizabeth*, Samuel J, Ellen....and in the 1871 Census....Kate, Jessie, Lucy, Wyllie, and Pearsey. All children being born in Hereford.

I would be interested in finding Samuel (John) Jacksons parents or siblings, and his wife's (Sarah A) Maiden name. I believe they may have been been married in Sept Qtr/1852, with Sarah being Sarah Eardley (Pg 757 Hereford district). Sarah A. may have been born in Gloustershire (Ewley?) around 1833.

I am also trying to confirm that the Elizabeth listed above (b 1855) is the Elizabeth Gertrude Jackson who married Edward Barsley (b 1856) in Aug 1878 in Atherton.

I have found both Edward and Elizabeth Gertrude Barsley in the 1881-1901 Census, living both in Lancashire and Monmouthshire. I know these are the correct persons I am tracing.

Brent,
My great-grandfather was Bedson Eardley, son of Edward, and brother of John. I have recently completed a book about my great grandfather Bedson and his descendants, but I included chapters on Bedson's brothers John, James and Edward who also immigrated to Utah from Staffordshire, England. I have had trouble getting it printed due to computer problems and my health, but plan to print it in August. Email me if you would like a copy. I am asking $30 to cover the cost of printing. None of John's descendants have responded to my letters. John set up one of the first pottery manufactories in Salt Lake and was then called to the Dixie Mission to set up a pottery there. He was also the leader of the Eardley Band in both Salt Lake and St. George. I have been researching our family for 20 years and have been working on this book for 10.

I will be printing a family history book about Bedson Eardley in January. Included is a chapter about the Eardley pottery in Salt Lake with mentions of John Cartwright as a partner. Unfortunately, I did not have the time to research into John's life, so his name is mentioned only in context with the pottery business. (I think I also mention his name in the chapter about the Eardley brothers conversion in Swadlincote and as members of the Wooden Box branch.) Hope this helps.
Shirley,
The Eardley book is currently at the printers and will go to the bindery on Monday February 26. It should take about two weeks at the bindery so it should be ready about March 12. The book mainly is about my great grandparents Bedson Eardley and Mary Ann Holding (their family and descendants). But as I mentioned, their is a chapter on each of Bedson's brothers (with a few of their descendants). There is a chapter on the Eardley pottery in Salt Lake which Bedson, John and James ran together until John went to St. George and James went into the Grocery business. If you would like a copy ($35), please E-mail me at <ridgwlkr@aros.net> and I can give you my address, phone #, etc. Sheri

Hi Helen,
I think that Frank may have been my Uncle Franks father or grandfather. Do the following surnames ring a bell:FINK,CLAY,SMITH,FOSKETT,BALL,CARTWRIGHT,
CARTLIDGE,GETZ. His family were potters from Staffordshire. My Uncle Frank died in 1987 in Mercer Medical Center and is buried in Greenwood cemetery in Trenton. Keep me posted on your findings and I'll do the same.
Thanks, Lori

Hi Helen,
It's my understanding that there were two Staffordshire Samuel Eardleys that came to Trenton. My Samuel had a son Frank, Frank then had a son Frank, which would be my Uncle. Three generations. My Uncle Frank was
born around 1910. If you come across anything on this family, please send it to me.I'll do the same, thanks
Lori Fink

Hannah's sister Ann Coxon married Henry Smith,he too was a coalminer and came to Trenton NJ and worked at the potteries.
Hope to hear from you soon, thanks,
Lori Fink

Karen, The T is right next to the Y.I'm here to learn about my family tree.I had never heard of the Eardly part. Only the Yardley. As I said in earlier messages my family came from Yardley, PA and now I find out Bucks county to Sllivan County,Mo around Green City and Milan. My Grandfather and Grandmother are buried in a private Yardley Cemetery outside Green City, MO. I want to find out about the Book that is printed on the Families of Sullivan CO., MO. If I remember right it is the best I've read on the Yardley's and I find out now there might have been a Brother that no one knew about until lately. So thanks for sharing your interesting story why they changed the name.

There are several reasons for this change.
First of all, most coal miners and potters were illiterate, so writtings depended on the clergy of the church. In my case, I have Yardleys (from Norton-le-moors, mid 1700s) that moved to Smallthorne where Eardley's existed. It was a natural transition for the priest to make. And, I would like to point out that YOU mistyped Yardley!!!!
Karen Eardley Patterson, searching Eardley Yardley in Staffordshire England.

I found several family members in the various Directories. What a brilliant resource. I have traced my Eardley family back to 1828 in the UK, but they were in Knutton Heath, not in Stoke on Trent proper. I am in Australia, so the kind of help you gave is invaluable. I have previously found it very difficult to obtain information about Trenton.
Regards
Helen.

Dear Lori
The children you attribute to your Samuel and Hannah, are actually the children of my ancestor Samuel and Hannah (Emma, Harriet, willie Minnie).
They all appear in the 1881 Census for Trenton Vol 14, Ed 99 sheet 37, Line 26. Samuel was 52, Hannah 51, Emma 14, Harriet 12, Willie 10 and Minnie 7. They are the brother and sisters of my g g grandfather Francis (Frank) Eardley who was born in 1855, who had a son Frank born in the late 1880s. He may have been the father of the Frank who was married to Mary Fink.
I have confirmation of this from the oral history. it is very confusing getting so many Eardleys with the same name.
regards
Helen

My ggg Grandfather Samuel (B 1828) had a son Francis (b 1855), who had a son Frank (born about 1887), who may have also had a son Frank, (who could have been born around 1910).
Dear Lori
Unfortunately, I don't think the strands of our families come together.
My ggg grandmother Hannah Eardley's name before she was married was Hannah Wade
She and Samuel Eardley were married in 1846 in England.
They had one daughter Hannah in 1848 and were still living in Staffordshire in 1851
They came to America prior to 1861.
They settled in Trenton in 1861,
but were in Pennsylvania in 1855, since my gg grandfather Francis C Eardley was born there.
Your Coxon family were very well known in Trenton.
There is a very interesting book by John Cumbler 'A Social History of Economic decline' which is all about Trenton and mentions the coxons.
I have also come across the Coxons in the 1870 US Census.
Hope this helps.
Regards
Helen

Lori
I was wrong about Hannah Coxon. I have just been over to Trenton and the Archives give Hannah Coxon as my great great grandfather Frank's mother (i.e. Samuel's wife).
However, Hannah can't have been born in 1866 - she was 50 in the 1880 Census.
What do you think?
Helen

My gg grandfather was Francis C Eardley who lived in Trenton, NJ from 1861 until at least 1920. He had a son Frank L. Eardley, who still lived at 860 East State St., Trenton in 1931. Could this be your Frank Eardley's father. Frank L. Eardley was born before 1891, so it is possible. I don't know where Greenwood Cemetry is.
If this is the Frank Eardley, I have some information about his mother, but more about the Eardley family.

Hi Lori
Frank L Eardley of Trenton NJ (F2) could have been your Frank's father. He was the son of Francis C. Eardley and nora Sullivan. F2 was living at 860 E. State St. Trenton in 1900 and 1920 with his father Francis (Frank) C. Eardley. I got this information from the Trenton Directories. Francis C. Eardley's father was Samuel Eardley who came to Trenton abt 1861. Samuel and Francis C. and Francis L. were potters.
Don't know if any of this helps.
Thanks for the information about Greenwood Cemetry. I live in Australia, but would love to visit Trenton one day.
