Re: Eash Discrepancies

The Joseph Eash whose brothers were Peter, Jacob and Christian (Christophel), we have evidence, was born in Hesse-Darmstadt, in Germany. The evidence is in two places: First, Joseph in the 1850 U.S. Census lists his birthplace as Germany. Second, in the 1880 census, Joseph’s son Jacob listed his father’s birthplace as “Darmstadt.” The year of his birth is 1776. It appears the family emigrated later that same year. Several pieces of information are scattered throughout the respected book “Both Sides of the Ocean,” by researcher J. Virgil Miller, about the Eash family. Its intellectual heft suggests that as to the European origins of families it is to be favored over the book by Levi Eash, whose informational links to the Old Country are sparse, though he’s done a fine job of documenting the American lineage of young Jacob.

Additionally, Gingerich and Kreider have proved their worth over a long period of time, although because of the wealth of data and the variety of sources, mistakes do creep in. Nonetheless, they are thoughtful and objective. Besides citing Levi Eash’s book, they point to quotes from several other family sources that speak succinctly about old Christian Eash, his European roots and his immigration history. Their conclusion is that Christian is Joseph’s (and your Jacob's) father and that emigration occurred in 1776, probably based on census information, the several separate family historical information bits that agree, plus the material from Virgil Miller.

It appears Joseph and brothers’ father was Christian (or Christian Jacob, who knows?) Esh, born Aug. 25, 1743, in Baden, at the Steinisch Hof (farm). The family, which originated on a farm outside of Oberlangenegg, near the anabaptist hotbed of Steffisburg in Bern canton, Switzerland, followed many other Mennonites and Amish anabaptists out of Switzerland to Germany to escape the persecution of the Swiss Reform Church. At some point the Eashes (then known as Ösch) moved from the Steinisch Hof at Durlach, near Karlsruhe, to the Gehaborn Hof in Darmstadt, their last location before emigration. Recent DNA tests have linked Joseph’s line with current Oberlangenegg Oesches.

Who was Jacob Eash the immigrant of 1751? We’d all like to know that, but he appears to have had nothing to do with the family listed for him by Levi Eash. Levi says Jacob settled in Dauphin County. Joseph’s father Christian is on the tax rolls of Cumru Twp., Berks Co., Pa., in 1789, and he lived in Mifflin Co. at his death Feb. 20, 1830. Nor do I know much about his son Jacob or his birth date, as his brother Joseph is the progenitor of my line.
Eash Discrepancies - Gingrich/Kreider vs. Eash Family Record

I was curious how folks are resolving the discrepancy between the Amish and Amish Mennonite Genealogies by Gingrich and Kreider with the Eash Family Record by Levi Eash.

Specifically I'm referring to Jacob Eash (1766/1774-1850) and his parents/siblings.

AMG lists a birth date of 1766 in Germany
EFR lists 1774 in Dauphin County PA

AMG lists a father Christian Eash and mother Esther Eash
EFR lists a father Jacob Eash, with immigration in 1751 and no mother.

AMG lists Christina, Jacobina, Maria, Joseph, & Christian
EFR lists Joseph, Peter, and Christophel as siblings with Joseph going to Indiana and fathering Benjamin, John, Jacob and Solomon (included in list in AMG); Peter being a general in the Mexican War; and Christophel being a farmer in Mifflin Co. PA.

I have tended to give more authority to the AMG book, but notice that various folks choose one over the other with no explanation. The AMG book does reference the EFR book as well as several other books that refer to a Christian Eash--but doesn't say why they chose to use "Christian" instead of Jacob Sr nor why Jacob Jr's birth was listed as 1766 instead of 1774. I have also noticed whoever made the newer tombstone for Jacob Eash (Bishop) chose to use the 1774 birth date.

Any thoughts on this discrepancy? Do you all think that Jacob Sr and Christian are the same guy (I've noticed some put "Christian Jacob" in their online trees)? Could Jacob and Christian have been two people, one who had a kid named Jacob born in 1774 and the other who had a kid named jacob born 1766?
My Aunt's name was Theda Ivory KINSER. Mother told us that she was married once before Theda married Verlin PALMER. Mother gave no further info on Theda's first marriage. I checked the 1940's census and found Theda living with my Dad & family. It showed Theda's last name as: EASH. Also showed her as being widowed. Does anyone in the EASH family group know about my Aunt. I'd like to know what this man's name was that she married? Thanks for any info that you might give me.

Ben
Ed and Ada Eash were neighbors to my uncle Lemon Holsopple. when I was a small boy about 7 or 8 years old I would drive the tractor & wagon that the wheat shocks were loaded on to then I took them to the barn where they were put into the thrashing-machine,The reason I'm telling you this is your G.grandfather Ed Eash was one the men loading that wagon,at lunch time we would all eat together. Ed didn't have to say but he was a hard worker. They also went the Blough church where my family went.As I remember Ed was man of about 5 foot 2 or 3" tall and 120 or 130 lbs.I'm 62 years old so that wase along time ago,I live in the Baltimore/Washington area I think your grandfather Keneth Eash lived in this area at one time,

I am a descendent of Bishop Jacob Eash, and would like to learn more of the annual family reunion.

My mother appears in the EASH FAMILY RECORD AND HISTORY as Dorothy Gochnour, then the unmarried daughter of Silas Gochnour and Mary Adelia Ashe, aka Della Ashe Gochnour (her headstone at Headrick's cemetery shows the latter). I am on vacation and do not have my book here to give you the number.

I am also interested in knowing if anyone is updating the family record.
My 4xGgrandmother was the second wife of Mikel Eash born Sept. 27, 1851 in Owen Co., Indiana to John and Sarah Eash. Mike's first wife was Nancy Ellen Malone. They moved to Cowley Co., Ks. Nancy died in 1885 and he remarried to Marinda Read Light Smith. I have found them on the Arkansas City, Cowley Co., KS 1900 and 1910 censuses living at #522 North Fourth. On the 1900 census, Marinda's granddaughter, Prudence Robinson was living with them, as well as Marinda's son, Issac Smith. Marinda must have left Mike to be with her daughter, Mary Ellen Light Robinson Hall in Hominy, Oklahoma. Marinda died at the Wha Sha She Camp in 1919. I am hoping to correspond with any members of this Eash family in hopes that someone may remember anything that could help me in my searching. Thanks in advance. Sincerely, Sarah

I am seeking info on Marinda/Marindy (Read/Reed) Eash. Marinda Read b. 1850 Taylor Co., KY married James R. Light 25 JUN 1871.
On Marinda's Record of Funeral it states Marindy Eash b. KY Father: Albert Reed Mother: Martha Benningfield d. 14 JUN 1919 Place: Wha Sha She Camp (around Hominy and Pawhuska, Ok).
I do not know who she remarried after James R. Light, but thought that perhaps she had married several times. Also, she may have had a son named I.B. Smith (Issac Brown Smith). I am not positive that he is her son.
Does she sound familiar to anyone? I am at a brick wall. I have no idea who this Eash is that she married.
Joseph Eash born 1832

I recently was shown a letter that stated that my Great Great Grandfather Joseph Eash born July 4, 1842 Somerset Co., PA was the grandson of Christian and Sarah (Johns) Eash through their son Joseph born 1818. I also have his death certificate that shows his father as Joseph Eash and his mother is Susanna Stump. All the information I have seen on the internet has Joseph Eash married to Lydia Schrock. Their first child Gertrude born in 1843. Is it possible that my Great Great Grandfather Joseph's mother was never married to Joseph Eash, that he was born out of wedlock? I have found my Joseph on the 1850 census but not living with any Eash's and there is a Susan Stump living in another household on the same census for Conemaugh Twp, Somerset Co., PA. In the letter I mentioned it states that he has relatives living in Lagrange, Indiana which is where Joseph and Lydia moved to. We also have a picture of a Levi Eash that was in the possesion of a daughter of Joseph (1842) that has written on the back that he is Uncle Levi Eash. Joseph and Lydia had a son Levi which would make him Joseph's (1842) half brother if all this information is correct. Anyone have any comments or suggestions to any of this.

I just came across your posting of 27 Jul 2002, ref: Christian Eash and Esther Miller. I am a decendant of their son, Joseph b. c. 1776 and Barbara ? b. 1773.

Do you have any more information on this family? I have 6 children for Christian and Esther. Christina, 1767, Jacobina, 1772, Peter 1774, Jacob 1774, Joseph 1776, and Christian 1778. I have been trying to find Barbara's maiden name but so far have had no luck.

Also, you mentioned an Eash book. Do you know if their is a copy in any historical centers that I might look at? Or, are there copies to be sold?

Thanks for any help you can give.

Linda

Can you help me identify the family of the Sarah Eash who married William Henry Pfeiffer in Jennings County, Indiana in 1853? The 1870 Jennings County, Indiana census lists William & Sarah (age 33, b.Ohio) Pfeiffer as well as the John (64, b.Germany) and Sarah (59, b.Penn.) Eash family and the Jonas (39, b.Ohio) and Sophia Eash family. I believe William Henry Pfeiffer and Sarah Eash to be my gg grandparents and am trying to document the connection.
My g grandmother is Sarah Elizabeth Pfeiffer, b. 3/1866 in Indiana, d. 8/1944 in Bowie County, Texas. She married Charles H. Schroeder in 1884 in Indiana, and they lived there until moving to Texas in 1907. In the 1900 census the family is living in Jackson County, Indiana.
Any help would be appreciated.
