Gene Easley Obituary

Bernard Gene Easley was born on March 17, 1928 on a farm near Friend, Nebraska to Luther and Mildred (Jewitt) Easley, the oldest of three children and died Saturday, October 10, 2009 at Warren Memorial Hospital in Friend at the age of 81 years 6 months and 23 days. As a young boy he attended country school and later graduated with the Class of 1945 from Friend High School. Gene served with the US Army in Korea in the 768th Police Battalion. He was united in marriage to Darlene Stehlik on September 8, 1950 in Dorchester and to this union three children, Patti Ann, Carol Jean and Gregg Alan were born.
Together Gene and Darlene made their home on the farm northwest of Dorchester for many years until moving into Friend in 1995. Gene looked forward to harvest time and loved the many hours spent operating the combine. He also enjoyed looking for cattle at all the local and area-wide sale barns. Darlene always joked that she had to keep a suitcase packed ready to go at a moments notice when Gene wanted to go somewhere. Gene enjoyed looking for cattle to buy, and hunting for special equipment for the farm. Gene and his son, Gregg worked together restoring a 1929 Model D John Deere, purchased by his father, the first tractor sold by Klippenstein Implement. Gene then enjoyed driving and displaying this tractor in parades and special events. Although his health didn't allow him to participate in many farm activities, he enjoyed spending time there, and raising cattle until just recently. He was very quiet, always a gentle man, but enjoyed talking to anybody and always had a smile for others.
Gene was a member of the United Church of Christ, Friend American Legion Ford-Banka Post #183 and was a regular member of the honor guard. In 1982 Gene was presented with the "Legionnaire of the Year" award. He was a charter member of the National Cattlemen's Beef Association, Nebraska Cattlemen's Association, Exeter Feeders and Breeders. He enjoyed listening to his polka music and always followed the activities of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Gene is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Gregg and Linda Easley, Dorchester, daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Mahlon Kohl, Crete, five grandchildren and spouses, Amanda and Troy Steuer, Crete, Ashley and Jared Jansen, Gretna, Garret Easley, Friend, Lisa and Brandon Lindau, Garland, Valerie and Mitchell Vernon, Papillion, six great-grandchildren, Mackenzie and Peyton Steuer, Kohltyn and Deklan Lindau, Brennan and Grady Vernon, sisters and brothers-in-law, Joan and Harvey Weber, Friend, Judy and Sam Shutts, Lincoln, sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Velma and Wayne Hansen, Dorchester, Rose Marie Heckman, Mill Valley, CA, Leonard and Jan Stehlik, Dorchester, nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Darlene in 1997, infant daughter, Patti Ann.
A Funeral Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, October 13, 2009, at United Church of Christ, Friend, with Rev. Tim and Ginny Adams officiating. Interment is in Andrew Cemetery, Friend. Visitation is from 1-9pm Monday at Lauber-Moore Funeral Home, Friend with the family greeting relatives and friends from 7-9pm; and one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorials may be directed in care of the family. Casketbearers are Troy Steuer, Jared Jansen, Garret Easley, Brandon Lindau and Mitchell Vernon. Honorary Pallbearers are Amanda Steuer, Ashley Jansen, Lisa Lindau, Valerie Vernon.

Hattie married Joseph F. Burkhart and had 8 children including my grandmother, Laura Isabelle BURKHART Page, their first child. Laura married my grandfather, Charles Brewer PAGE. My father, Charlie Richard PAGE, was their 1st son and was born in Riverside , CA. Anyone who would like more info (forward or back) on Hattie is welcome to contact me. I am attempting to clarify the Easley line as it goes back into William Pyrant EASLEY in VA (1792 - 1846). I have clear lineage from Robert Easley (Esley) born in France (1655) back through Jean Esley (1588). It's muddy in the middle thanks to the Civil War and records that were destoyed at that time.

I too would be very interested in the chapter about the Easley plantation and the pictures, if they are still available. John and Mary's son Stephen married Mary Ann David Burnton, their son Peter Easley married Elizabeth Vincent, their son John married Mary Hamilton, their son Vincent Franklin married Nancy Clem Miller, their son Samual Wilbur married Melissa Gott, their son Charles Houston married Ada Bradley, their son William Wilbur was my father.

Does anyone have proof that she was daughter of Robert "Robin" Easley & Mary Allen, or was she daughter of John Easley & Ann Gowan??? She is not named in Robert's Will, although he names other children. Would like to resolve this puzzle.

Thanks Shirley (dixiewidget@aol.com)

I, too am descended from Easley's of Pittsylvania Virginia. My line descends from William Easley and Mary Pyrant, to Pyrant Easley and Elizabeth?, to Pyrant II and Mary Ferguson, to Pyrant III and Martha Whitworth, to Edward Thomas Easley and Virginia Beck, to my grandmother Annie Easley who was born on the Easley "Plantation", though not the same one as you reference. This plantation was located a few miles south of Chatham, off Tightsqueeze Road. Some refer to it as the Ponderosa, and the entrance road is named Ponderosa. The house itself, originally built in the late 1700's by the first Pyrant Easley, still stands and serves as a hunting lodge. I wonder if your book mentions this property as well? My grandmother was born there, and my Father used to work on the farm in the summers when he was a boy. Per my records, I have your Robert Easley's grandfather Daniel as being a son of William Easley and Mary Pyrant.

Greetings. I am a direct descendant of Julia Ann Easley who married James Franklin Fenton in Rusk County in 1848. From what I have seen online I think she was born in Belle Fonte, Alabama 7 Nov 1823. That is very near the Tennessee border. I think the census entry that she was born in TN is an error, but probably correct that her parents were born in TN.

James Fenton's father migrated from KY to AR, then to Nacogdoches, TX. He owned land there that became part of Rusk County. Then sometime later James and his sons returned to Sevier County, AR.

If you have learned any more about Julia's ancestry I would be happy to share with you any info about the Fentons. My email is fentonesq@aol.com

Hello. I have an ancestress named Julia Ann Easley who was born in Alabama near the border with Tennessee in about 1923. She married James Franklin Fenton in Rusk County, TX in 1848. They moved up to Arkansas where she died in 1909.

I have been working on finding her parents without any luck so far. Based on some of the census records for that part of Texas I could make a guess, but I would like to have a real connection.

Let me know if you think we could help each other!

Hi, Janet. Yes, I did receive a file, maybe some other material. Unfortunately, I am in the Los Angeles area at the moment, recovering at my daughter's house after several surgeries and another coming up next week. I will not be back in Bakersfield until at least the first of the year. I don't have access to any of my files or my own computer, of course. I will flag your message to get back to you after I get home. Perhaps in the meantime, Ilona Fry will see your message on the board and send the info to you.

I'll be in touch.
