Hi Holly. I would love to share info with you. I think I may know the missing link to your family as there was a James Easlon that was the younger brother of my great grandfather. I'm not too sure if the timeline fits, or if he may have also had a son named James. It's possible. I do not have any information about James Easlon or his family, but I do have information about his older brothers and sisters families. Please contact me anytime at cseaslon@sbcglobal.net. I hope to hear from you.

Sincerely,
Clint Easlon

Thanks, Arthur. Since I posted that, I located an 1870 Arkansas census that lists Thomas. I'm asuming Thomas Jr. was your great grandfather or maybe great-great. Until I saw that census, I'd always thought Thomas was the oldest but according to that census, they had a daughter before him. If you'd like to see it, e-mail me and I'll see if I can send it to you. You wouldn't happen to remember hearing any stories about the name change, would you?

Nice hearing from you, Cousin,
Debbie

She is in Sevier County, AR near her sister in 1870 (Narcissa Amanda Burke Rodgers) and married to Thomas Easlon with two small children.
Her tombstone reads Harriet E. Burks Berkley.
In the 1880 Mill Creek, Franklin County, AR census, Harried EASLON is listed (no husband) with a daughter, Tennessee Easlon, age 8, born AR. Other children listed are:
Thomas, 10, Parrasett, 9, Nathaniel B., 5 and James, 2.

I am interested in Harriet's maiden name, determining who her first husband was -- Thomas? (found a Thomas and Harriet in 1870 Sevier County, AR that matches somewhat). and to verify that I have the correct Parrasetta Easlon who married a PRYOR ca 1899.

Appreciate any help or clues on this line.

Hi Ann,

I haven't been able to find anything beyond the 1870 census, either. I know that Thomas was in the Civil War and my dad said he remembered his dad telling him that Thomas got wounded in the war and that he walked with a limp as a result. Did you see the name of the first child on the census? I can't figure out what it is but I know that's not a name of any of the children that I'd ever heard of. Judging from the age, she was born the same year that Thomas and Harriett were married. I have no idea if this was his first marriage or not but he was around 40 when they wed so I'm thinking that he probably was married before. Please let me know if you find out anything. This has had me stumped for quite awhile now.

My husbands great grandmother was Pairsetta Easlon, daughter of Thomas J. Easlon & Harriett Burke. The 1870 Census indicates Thomas was born in TN, but I have not been able to locate him in any older Census. He was 21 years older than his wife. Do you know if he was he married before and did the remaining family move to OK prior to 1889? Thanks.

Ok, all you Easlons and Berkleys out there. It is hard for me to believe that absolutely no one knows anything about the Easlon family beyond Thomas Jefferson Easlon (Eastland). Anyone have any clues?

He also said that Tom Sr. was wounded in the Civil War, and that his dad, Nathaniel, told him that Tom walked with a limp.
Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Arthur, look in USGenWeb Archives Digital Library. In Arkansas. type in Harriet Burke and you will find a marriage record for Thomas Eastland and Harriet Burke. They are our Thomas and Harriet. They got married in 1866 in Sevier Co. I think the first of their children was born in 1868 so I'm guessing that the name was changed between 1866 and '68. Thomas Sr. died in 1880.

Mike, please share all info you have on the origination of our surname. To my knowledge, it is only about 150 years old. I was told that it had been changed but no one agrees on what it was originally
