In the NJ Archives Vol. 3 pg 434 was an item that stated "Will dated Aug 10, 1815 for Robert Eastburn, proved Aug 29, 1815.To Susannah Hunt daughter of Samuel Noe of NY $100, she being a goodly woman, indisposed and poor in estate. There was more on the Eastburn family which I did not copy. Does anyone know of this Samuel Noe with a daughter Susannah?

Ok - I'll say it - he is in my tree father to Carey A...

I have a wonderful 'frozen' picture of him - the tree from
him to me actually - If interested in Benjamin or Carey or the Lee's (doubt the latter - I'd know you).
If wanted, I can make jpeg of them and mail them out.

I"m really wondering about all the flack on Thomas son of Robert 3rd who is son to Robert and Agnes. I'll see if i
can find that thread and serve up some fruit to taste.
Offer is available. Martin

Howdy and thanks.

Younger brother (MIT PROF) has our book - I might just get the soft back for reference. Dad turned 90 and I think I have the tree to finish. (been working on it since DOS days) Most of the work has been from Family Bibles.

Our tree is massive - containing much more than one tree. It lacks details on a number of members, but mostly the very oldest ones. It is a small forest!
The Allison family, Bell (Northern & Southern), Dewey, Mayos, Rockwells, and now down to Eastburns, Johnsons, Hunts, DeBeer(Beer), Livermore, Langs and finally into my brothers and sisters. The map is 15 generations and is 26 x 53". (Family Tree Maker) Other trees (by themselves) are Lincoln, Rousava, JOhnson, McMillan, Hunt, and Johnson.

Martin, I am from the branch that moved South (Joseph Ross Eastburn b. 1802 d. 1873, great great grandson of Robert and Sarah Preston Eastburn) to Mobile. The Eastburns are well documented. The book The Eastburn Family by Hettie A. Walton and Eastburn Reeder was published in 1903. I believe you can find it on-line in Ancestry, or you can order a reprint through Higginson Book Company.

Robert and Sarah came over in 1713. There are a number of pieces of information on Robert, Jr. out there on the web. His assignment in the Revolution, capture and recovery. His helping to found the College of Philadelphia. Burial site, etc.

Paula Benell (mother is an Eastburn)

Hi Tim, Enjoyed reading parts of Harold Eastburn's diary.
It must seem that a trip of this nature was fearful in open waters. Bob and I have venture via the Intercoastal Waterway from Beaumont to Mobile Bay about three years ago.
Docked at Morgan City on the river and enjoyed the Bay as well.
Have not had much time to do further Eastburn research as
we are having to renovate the house due to Hurricane Ike.
Merry Christmas plus may the joys of the New year bring you many blessings.
Frances

Tim & Frances,
Thank you for your quick and interesting responses. I’m interested in how the Eastburn, Loud, and Winner families connect in the Philadelphia area. Popular song writer Septimus Winner, b.1827, had siblings with both Eastburn and Ross middle names. His uncle William E. Winner did the frontispiece drawing for Marguerite Loud’s Wayside Flowers 1851 book of poems. W.E. Winner studied under Thomas Sully. Sully’s son-in-law William Darley was a sales agent for Loud’s pianos in the 1830’s. Darley’s name appears on Unit#2870 by Thomas Charles Loud (3rd generation of builders) nephew of Esther Eastburn who is also buried in Magnolia Cemetery, Mobile.
Darley’s brother Felix was the illustrator for Poe’s Gold-Bug as well as the Who’s Who List of other 19th century authors. Poe was to have edited Wayside Flowers is 1849 but died enroute in Baltimore. Both T.C.’s father, Thomas Loud (brother of John) and William Darley were church organists in Philadelphia.
Using son Paul's computer via Florida.

Esther Loud was married to my ancestor Joseph Ross Eastburn. They later moved to Mobile ca 1841. I have a copy of the 1903 Eastburn Genealogy by Eastburn Reeder and Walton. My line is: Cleanthus Ross Eastburn, Philologus Loud Eastburn, then my dad Philo Carl Eastburn. Interested in hearing more about the Loud Family.
Craig, contact me at tvought@verizon.net.

I have a considerable amount of info on HE and some of his items. He was husband of my maternal grandmother's sister.

In March 1875 to Feb. 1876 he was a carpentar in the service of the US gov. sailing the Gulf Coast from Mobile to TX, refurbishing lighthouses. I have transcribed that diary. Below, Uncle Harold's first and last entries.

Tim Vought

Something you may find interesting (from handwritten diary which I have):

March 4th 1875
Saturday
Left the wharf behind Otis’ Mills at ¼ to one O'clock. towed out by the Steamer Fountain. We would have left at eight o'clock according to orders only the Tow Boat broke her machinery and we had to wait for another Tow Boat. everything all right! Vessel under way Harold Sohes and in good health. hope my wife is the same. Not feel sick yet. Very lonesome on the vessel...

Sunday Morning Feby 27th
We left Galveston yesterday at ¼ to one O’clock and arrived here at Brashear City at Ten Oclock this morning. It is two hundred and forty three miles from Glaveston to this place all the way through the Gulf of Mexico until we got within thirty miles of this place when we entered Atchafalaya Bay and wnt up it twelve miles when we entered Atchafalaya Rive and we wnt up it eighteen (18) miles to Brashear City - Brashear City is a small place very much scattered and all frame buildings. I suppose there is may be 1500 inhabitants here. as soon as we landed I saw a two hundred pound Negro policman. it is the first one of that kind that I have seen on the whole trip. we leave here today at ½ past twelve on the Train for New Orleans and expect to get there at ½ past four O’clock in time to take the five O’clk train for Mobile. - we arrived safe in New Orleans and took the five o’clock train for Mobile will get home tonight --

I am looking for info on the following individuals:

Samuel Roberts and Mary Eastburn had a son, Jesse Roberts bet. 1780-1790 in Bucks Co., PA. They died when he was young, so Jesse was raised by Mary's sister, Margaret Eastburn. Margaret was supposedly married to a George Akinswaller, but the only reference to George I can find is in the 1790 census. I cannot find any other akinswaller's so I suspect this is a misspelling.

Any info would be appreciated!

Isaac enlisted August, 1862 in the 76th Regiment, Illinois Volunteers. Served three years. Ws 1st Corporal and then Sergeant. Was in the siege of Vicksburg, the battles of Jackson, Mobile and other engagements of his Regiment. Served with his brother, James and first cousin, David C. Eastburn (son of Joseph Barton and Sarah Truitt Eastburn).

ISAAC H. EASTBURN is one of the honored pioneers of Iroquois County. No other citizen of Concord Township has so long been numbered among its residents as our subject, who is now living on section 31. For fifty-seven years he has watched the growth and upbuilding of the county, has been identified with its progress, and has aided in its advancement and development. Few men are more widely and none more favorably known in the community than our subject.

Mr. Eastburn well deserves representation in this volume, and it is with pleasure that we present to our readers this record of his life. He was born in Lawrence County, Ohio, December 5, 1833, and is a son of Jesse and Jane (Smedley) Eastburn. His grandfather, Jesse Eastburn, was a native of Maryland, and his father emigrated to this country from England. The grandfather was a soldier in the War of 1812, and on that account his descendants were given a land warrant. The father of our subject, Jesse Eastburn, Jr., was born in Adams County, Ohio, in 1809, and in 1835 emigrated Westward to Illinois, locating in Concord Township, Iroquois County, on the 25th of March. He was among the first settlers in the township, through others came the same year. He was both a mechanic and farmer, and in connection with the cultivation of his land carried on a wagon shop in the early days of the settlement. He was reared as a Democrat and cast his first Presidential vote for Andrew Jackson. He became a stanch Abolitionist and in 1856 voted for John C. Fremont, supporting his party from that time until his death. He was the first Supervisor of Concord Township and served for a number of terms. A leading and influential citizen, he was quite prominent in public affairs. In 1840, he united with the Methodist Episcopal Church and served in all its offices. His house was the recognized home of the circuit-rider, and he was never so happy as when entertaining a half-dozen ministers. Before his death, he removed to Sheldon and aided in building the Methodist Church in that place. His educational advantages were limited, but by extensive reading he made himself a well-informed man, and while serving as School Director for a number of years he did effective service for the cause of education in this community. He did much to aid in the growth of the county and lived to see it take a front rank among the counties of the State. His death occurred September 13, 1873. One of Nature's noblemen, his loss was deeply mourned by many friends.

Isaac Eastburn was only seventeen months old when his parents came to Illinois, and amid the wild scenes of frontier life he was reared to manhood. His boyhood days were spent in his father's shop and at work in the fields. His early school privileges were meagre, but at the age of twenty years he entered Asbury University, where he pursued a three-year scientific course. He then engaged in teaching in country schools for three years, mostly in Concord and Martinton Townships.

During this time, he was united in marriage with Miss Susanna Fry, of Concord Township, the marriage ceremony being performed at the home of the bride on the 1st of February, 1857, by the Rev. William Stubbles. The lady was born in Coshocton County, Ohio, May 6, 1838, and is a daughter of Abraham and Catherine (Deamude) Fry. Her mother died when Mrs. Eastburn was only three years old and when a little girl of five she came to this county with her father and soon acted as housekeeper for him, as he did not again marry. Mr. Fry was married previous to his union with Miss Deamude and had eight children by each marriage. With one exception, Mrs. Eastburn is the youngest. Fourteen of the children grew to mature years and ten are yet living.
Susanna Eastburn

After the marriage of our subject his father gave him one hundred and sixty acres of land and he concluded to turn his attention to farming. In 1859, he removed to the farm which has since been his home, and in that year built the house which is yet his residence. It was a wild and unimproved tract, but he at once began its development and continued its cultivation until, feeling his duty called him to the front, he enlisted on the 8th of August, 1862, for the late war as a member of Company E, Seventy-sixth Illinois Infantry, being appointed 4 Corporal. The troops went into camp at Kankakee and after two weeks went to Columbus, Ky. Later, they were sent to Bolivar, Tenn., thence to La Grange and on to Coffeeville, Holly Springs, Moscow, La Fayette and Vicksburg. He was first under fire at the siege of Vicksburg and there remained until after the surrender of the city, when, he took part in the siege of Jackson. He was made Sergeant immediately after the siege of Vicksburg. Having returned to that place, he was then sent to Natchez and went on an expedition to Western Louisiana. He afterward participated in the Meridian campaign under Sherman and later, receiving a thirty-days furlough, returned home on a visit. On the 1st of July, 1864, he again reached Vicksburg and participated in the expedition to Jackson, Miss. The troops had a severe battle at Jackson Cross Roads, where Mr. Eastburn was twice slightly wounded, once in the right arm and once in the right hand. A bullet shot through his hat cut out some of his hair, and another pierced his blouse. The command was afterward sent to Morganza Bend and participated in the battles at Washington, La., White River, Duvall's Bluff, and then went to Memphis, Tenn. Subsequently they went to New Orleans and thence started by boat to Pensacola, Fla. A storm arising, the vessel was shipwrecked and they had to throw overboard two hundred and twenty-five head of horses and mules in order to save themselves. They besieged and captured Ft. Blakely, and the Seventy-sixth Illinois lost over one hundred men in the assault. They them went to Selma, Ala., took part in the battle of Mobile and thence went to Galveston, Tex., in 1865. From that place, Mr. Eastburn wrote home that he expected to be sent to Mexico, but instead was mustered out and went to Chicago, where he received his discharge (as a sergeant)

Mr. Eastburn reached home on the 8th of August, 1865, just three years after his departure. He spent-only two weeks in a regiment hospital, being always found at his post of duty as a faithful defender of the Union. During his absence, Mrs. Eastburn had been living on the home farm with her three children, and he again began farm work. At the death of his father, he received eighty acres additional from the estate and afterward purchased a one hundred and twenty acre tract. Since that time, he has sold some and given to each of his children eighty acres. George W., the eldest, was born in Concord Township on the 20th of March, 1858, was graduated from the public schools of Sheldon, and is an extensive reader. He is now engaged in banking in Sheldon. He was married November 1, 1883, to Miss Dora McGill, of Watseka, and they have four children. Emma Florence, born in Concord Township, October 14, 1859, was married on the 1st of March, 1878, to Robert Wilkinson, of Sheldon, by whom she has two children. Frank P., born on the home farm, October 12, 1861, was married in California, January 2, 1886, to Miss Lillie Arbuckle, but now makes his home in Washington; he is an artist and travels. Jesse L., the youngest, born on the old homestead, September 10, 1867, was graduated from the Sheldon schools, after which he engaged in teaching for two years. His health failing, he went to California with his mother in 1889, and while there met and married Miss May K. Taylor, the union being celebrated September 18, 1890. He is a close student and is especially fond of the study of geology, having a fine collection of geological and other specimens correctly classified. He makes his home in Yreka, Cal.

From the time he began to be interested in politics, Isaac Eastburn was an Abolitionist, and when the Republican party was formed to prevent the further extension of slavery, he joined its ranks and has since fought under its banner. He cast his first Presidential vote for John C. Fremont. He and his wife have long been members of the Methodist Episcopal Church, and he has filled all of its offices. Both are active workers in the Sunday-school and he has been Superintendent for many years. Charitable and benevolent people, the poor and needy find in them a friend and those in distress never seek their aid in vain. Their lives are filled with good deeds, and their many excellencies of character have won them the high regard of all. Socially, Mr. Eastburn is a member of the Odd Fellows' society and has occupied all its offices. In 1883, he made a trip to California, intending to locate on the Pacific Slope, and during that trip he visited Oregon, Washington, and traveled all through Nevada. He went to the West by the Southern Pacific and returned by way of the Rio Grande Railroad. After eight months spent beyond the Rockies, he concluded to return to Illinois and is yet one of the valued and honored citizens of Concord Township, where he has so long resided.

Source: Portrait and Biographical Record of Iroquois Co., IL; 1893
Hi Erica,

I know you were hoping and probably, stabbing in the dark, when you saw my name.

I'm sure I'm not. Unless your mother told you a lie about the military. Next your mother would have to have been in or live in Australia, and then I will need your mothers name.
Your the perfect age , because I was 20 , back in 1980 and was just before I started dating my now wife. But I really cant see it . As much as I wish you good luck, please feel free to elaborate or at keep in touch.I really hope you find answers. I'm doing my geneology search, and I can keep checking for my namesakes for you, if as I suspect I'm not. Take care.

Eastburn/Halloway/Buzby in Montgomery, PA

Hello all,
I am trying to locate more information about my father's maternal side of the family. William H. Halloway, born 3 june 1846 in Norristown, Montgomery Co, PA married Ida Virginia Buzby 28 dec 1868. His parents were Thomas Halloway and Mary Ann Eastburn. Ida Virginia's parents we think were John Benson Buzby and Elizabeth Bruner. Thomas Halloway's parents we think were William Halloway and Ann Coats. It is my understanding that the Eastburns were a prominate family in Montgomery County. Any information leading to the parents of Mary Ann Eastburn or others here would be greatly, greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for your time and assistance.
