Eastep - Snyder/Snider - Dickerson, Help Please

Trying to confirm members of the Thomas/Tom and Nancy [Snyder/Snider] Eastep/Estepp/Estep family to find out what happened to Tom. Their children were: (1) Albert Landon Eastep b 1877 in TN; m Martha I. Tedlock 1904 in IN and believe they died in Iowa or NE. (2) Betty Eastep b 1881 in TN, m James M. Tesnear 1894 in TN and she died 1934 in Greenville Co., SC. (3) Jackson Monroe Eastep b 1888 in TN, m Dona Frances Dickerson 1919 in TN, and he d 1971 in TN. (4) Bovell/Rovell Eastep b 1891 in TN and believed he was in the World War I Draft in TN but can not find any other info on him. Betty [Eastep] Tesnear’s obit in 1934 also gives surviving brother’s names of (5) T. D. and (6) Walter but unable to locate them with just that info.

In trying to locate Tom found the 1900 Civil District 17 Washington Co., TN has Nancy ESTEP as divorced but her death certificate says EASTEP widowed. The 1880 District 3 Monroe Co. TN census has both Thomas and Nancy ESTEPP. Believe Tom’s parents were John and Joannah/Hannah Eastep.

Our family’s lineage runs through Eastep and Dickerson and was hoping to confirm the link. Any and all help would be appreciated, or if you have any insight in the families, it would be appreciated.

Vicki S.
I am a distance relative of yours. I have developed an extensive family tree that includes many Easteps and their ancestors along the YOCUM line. My tree includes all the people mentioned in an informal book produced by Grace I. Eastep titled "YOCUM". I do not have any information about EASTEPS beyond what is in the book, but I have greatly expanded on the YOCUM ancestors. I have posted my tree on Ancestry.com under the name YOCUM-KNEE ANCESTORS. You are welcome to anything that I have.
If you have also expanded on that original book by Grace Eastep, I would be very much interested in getting that information.
John F.
I grew up hearing my Father (Daniel Wayne) talk about his sister Iva, They were very close. I was also at our grandpa's funeral although I was only 8 at the time. I don't know if you remember or not, but there where six men who carried Grandpa's coffin & one little blond hair little boy who made sure to take his place with the rest. That little boy was me.

Joe and Charlotte both live in South Florida (along with my dad)
I am very happy to have run into you on here. my Father always spoke fondly of your mom, But after her death I think he lost touch with the rest of her family. I do remember him mentioning you, But other than that I had no information about you.

If you'd like to contact me directly, my e-mail is danny_eastep@yahoo.com

My mother (Iva Mae Eastep) and my Uncle Bill Eastep were the two oldest children of Daniel Eastep (my grandfather. When his first wife(Clydie)died, he remarried, so I have a lot of aunts and uncles. I remember Joe and Charlotte best because they weren't much older than me.i have the email address of my aunt Patsy. My mother was killed in a car accident in 1954. I live in western Arkansas not too far from where my grandfather lived in Oklahoma. I was at his funeral with my Uncle Bill. Daniel's youngest brother (my geat uncle Virgil) lived about six miles from me in Acorn, Ark. until his death just a few years ago.

My Uncle Bill Eastep is a grandson of Samuel. He grew up and lived part of the time as a child with his grandfather and grandmother Callie. He remembers them quite well. She was very big in herbs (called an Indian herb doctor). He remembers his grandfather's shotgun over the mantel. He remembers that he was part Indian but he doesn't know what tribe or any other specifics. I do have a photo of Sam and Callie Eastep. She was a very small woman, and he was a much larger man. My great uncle Virgil Eastep (the youngest son) lived near me in Acorn, Arkansas until he died just a few years ago. He told some interesting stories about his brothers and bootlegging in the mountains. I have been to Nail, Ark. where grandpaw Eastep had a farm. My other greatgrandfather also lived in the area. He was Luther Young, and my great-great grandfather, A.E. Wilson, was the Methodist minister there at Nail.

Send your email to SaintLinda@aol.com and I will send you my copies of Billy's Mamie's marriage record and Benj. C's as well, if you like.

I have somewhere in my files a census record of Joel, Jr living with Pleasant, I think. If not with him certainly near him. I haven't worked on Pleasant back for some time.

David Morgan Baldwin moved up to OH. he was also in the Union side of the Civil war. The rest of the Baldwin males were Confederate and most of them died with the exception of the youngest ones who were too young to be in the War.

Linda

Hello. yes this is my line. Joel Jr moved to Putnam County West Virginia, near his son Benjamin. I will get my records out, and look them up. I do not have Billy and Mamies marriage record.

After Billy and Mamied divorced she remarried and stayed in Middleport. Billy stayed with the railroad, and moved to Gallia County and had a boarding house with Katy Lowery.
She may have had it before they married not sure.

Some of the Baldwins also moved to Ohio.

Em
My line stems from Pleasant Estep and Lucinda Estep, both siblings of your Joel Estep. There is a little ntermarrying in Pleasant's and Lucinda's lines as 3 of Pleasant’s sons marry 3 of Lucinda’s daughters. Lucinda Estep married Jesse Baldwin.

Joel’s brother Pleasant Estep also served in the Civil War in the same unit as your Joel, Jr. as did Pleasant’s sons Samuel, Benjamin and Enoch.

I know that 2 of Pleanant’s sons moved up to the Meigs Co, Ohio area just about the time of the Civil War to get their families out of the struggle. It is likely that your line (their cousins) would have moved up about the same time.

I have not done any direct searching for Joel, Jr, but have come across tidbits in my searches for the Esteps in my line.
This is from the booklet Descendents of Thomas Estep. It is not all that accurate, but has some good info.

Joel Estep, Jr, son of Joel Estep, Sr and Nancy Nelson (or Sarah Clark) of Boone Co, WV, was born c 1825 Floyd Co, KY. He married 1st in Kanawha Co, WV, 12 Apr 1852 to Rebecca D. Coleman, b. c 1824, died after the 1870 census taken on 12 June. Joel Jr. married 2nd Catherine Vanatter Mullens, 5 July 1871 in Kanawha Co, WV. Joel Jr. served in Co. E, 7th Reg WV Cav. He resided in the Malden district of Kanawha Co, WV.

Children by Rebecca D. Coleman:
Samuel B., b 12 Mar 1853 on Cabin Creek, Kanawha Co, WV, d. 1 Sept 1854.

William R., b. c 1855

Genetta Margaret, b. 3 Mar 1857 on Davis Creek, Kanawha Co, WV, m. 22 Aug 1880 in Kanawha Co, to H. C. Kenney.

Benjamin Cornelius, b. 8 Aug 1859 on Davis Creek, Kanawha Co, WV., m. Martha Ellen Fowler, 1880, Putnam Co, WV.

Children by Catherine Vanatter Mullens:
William C., b. 1874, Malden, Kanawha, died 8 July 1878.
Catherine Vanatter Mullens also had a daughter, Viola Mullens, b. c 1869.

Info from my searches of Civil War records:
Joel Estep and David Baldwin both signed an affidavit for Pleasant in 1879.

Joel Estep, aged 54, and John Wesley Estep, signed an affidavit for his brother Pleasant’s pension, in 1883.

Miscellaneous info gleaned from various sources:

Putnam Co, WV Records:

Marriage records:
Benjamin Cornelius Estep and Martha Ellen Fowler 1880.

William Raleigh (or Rolingh) Estep, (aged 22) m. Mamie Emma Sanders (aged 16), license on 30 Jan 1909; married 31 Jan 1909. (I have a e copy of this if you want it)

Meigs Co, Ohio Salisbury Twp, Riverview Cemetery:
Eastep,_______?: 9/14/1915-2/28/1992

I have some more info somewhere in my files regarding Joel Estep, Sr and his wifes, Nancy Nelson and Sarah Clark. He supposedly had 24 children by these two wives, but I can't seem to line them up that. Linda Reed
Which of Joe's children do you descend from. I know that his son, Pleasant Estep's sons, Samuel, Benjamin and Enoch all married Baldwin girls, and Sam and Benjamin for sure are in Meigs and Gallia counties. I have communicated with a gal, now deceased, who is from a line that was a fusion of both Sam and Benjamin's lines and they spelled their name Eastep. I have not done a lot of searching for Benjamin Estep, brother to Samuel. I'm digging through all my old files to see what I can find. Mostly, I've tried to keep up with Samuel Estep, which is no small task. Linda

I'm answering an old post, but perhaps you are still monitoring your query. My Estep/Eastep/Estepp family is in the Middleport, Meigs Co, OH, area and I'm betting that your Easteps belong to one of my Esteps. I will go through my info to see which of the family members you belong. Can you give me some dates for Harold?
Henry Eastep - Eastep/Esteps from AR, TX, OK, AL

I am researching greatgrandfather Andrew Jackson Eastep b. 1886 - Andrew had two older sisters Della and Nellie (twins) born in 1884. I am trying to find out information about their parents - i.e. NAMES :) . Andrew's last living child thinks that her grandfather's first name was Henry and grandmother was Julia. Census information shows that Andrew's parents were both born in Texas.
I have heard from various family members that Julia was Julia Coker or Julia Payne or Julia Kelley or Julia Johnston - and they think Henry was gggrandpas middle name. Someone else says that Julia and Henry's family were originally from Alabama. No one really knows anything for sure.

What I know is that Andrew, Della and Nellie were supposedly all born in Texas (the census records indicate that) in Red River County - where there are no birth records to be found. Della married J.E. Carter and died in 1925 in Texarkansas, AR (no parent info on death cert.), Nellie married Elvis Kelley and lived in Oklahoma. Andrew married Sarah Susie Johnston and he died in 1945 in Oklahoma. Andrew, Susie and their kids - Floyd Elmer, Earnest Ray, Delia Jawell, Millard Roy, Ruby Wanell, Morris Warren, Adrian Sylvester, Earl, Willard Edward and Joyce Imogene - lived in Homan, Miller Co., Ark. in 1920. Susie died in 1929 in Bryan County, Oklahoma and the kids were raised by relatives or others, some were adopted out.
Please email me with anything you may have on my line - notguiltylme@yahoo.com
Any help or information would be greatly appreciated! Thanks so much!!!

Leah Eastep

I am also researching that line. I didn't know that the mother of Della, Nellie and Andrew was a Bean - do you have any other information regarding their parents? The information I have is that the family is both Cherokee and Choctaw - of course have not been able to confirm either. Thanks!

Andrew Jackson Eastep, Nellie Eastep, Della Eastep

I am trying to find out some info. Andrew b. 1886, Nellie and Della (twins) b. 1884 were siblings - we don't have any information on their parents other than someone in the family thinks their father's name might have been Henry. In 1920 Andrew and his wife Sarah Susie Johnson and kids, as well as Della and her husband James E. Carter with kids lived in Miller Co. Arkansas - Della died in 1921 in Bowie Co., Ark., and Andrew moved to Bryan County, Oklahoma where he died in 1945. I have found a Nellie Wyrick in Spokane Washington in 1930 with correct birth year - living with her family and her mother Elizabeth Eastep - don't know if this is the Nellie I am looking for or not. Haven't been able to find anything else on Elizabeth that ties her with the other two. Any information would be helpful and greatly appreciated!

W=wife, S=son, D=daughter

It also states on this census record that there were 10 children, 8 are living. I do not have any information on the 2 children that died.

Notes: Henry H may also have been known as William Henry Harrison Estep. He was referred to as “Uncle Harry”

Osce was also known as Roscoe Estep (headstone) & Cossia Oscoe Estep (death certificate)

The twins – one was short (Hubert) and the other was tall (Herbert)

Hubert was in WWI and survived his ship going down overseas

Joseph & Lydia Estep; Roscoe & Merl Estep; Bertha M Estep Collins & Charles L Collins along with Homer Collins; Hubert & Dolly Estep along with Joseph Kenneth Estep are all buried in Owl Creek Cemetery - Appalachian Rd east to Germany Rd (Co 66) South to Owl Creek Rd (Co 64) .9 mile to cemetery on right (near Lucasville, OH) - I have pictures of all of their graves (Annie Collins Storland)

Joseph Estep and Lydia Estep are my great grandparents.
Did he marry Nancy Watson?

I can send you the info in the Thomas Estep Sr books. Says Joseph C Estep & Frankie Hoskins were his parents. Joseph's parents are thought to be Samuel Estep & Polly Griffith. Sam's parents are thought to be Samuel Estep and Mary Lane but there is some question.

Annie in Minnesota
lupielu3@aol.com
