Hi,
I am also looking in to the Eastes line. Several of them married into the Cavell family in Kent, England. They are from the Dover, Walmer, Deal area.
I'm looking into Parrish records at the moment and have noticed another family researcher sees the same thing. That is the family has been quite creative spelling their name.
From your post on the message board it sounds as if you've been able to find much more than I have so far. If I can be of assistance though, feel free to contact me @ ktnugget5700@aol.com
Cindy

Hello, My name is Cynthia Almanza Florez I am not shure if you will get this since the last time logged in was in 2000. I was looking through some items of mine and came across a gift from Mrs. Dill. I was thinking of her and googled her name and that is how i am here. I am a Piano student of her later years. After here death I continued playing and Dorothy continued teaching. I would like to say that Mrs Dill has made a huge difference in my life. And has helped in who i am today. I have many pictures of her. and Dorothy as well. I am very interested in hearing more about her and her family.. other than the many stories she has told me through the years. I plan on one day telling my children what a great lady Mrs Dill was... I am not shure if all i know would help you on your quest of information. but i am always willing to help . thank you.

I have pictures of some members of the above family dating about the 1860s. I have a picture of Jabez Eastes (b. 1829, England). He married Susan Maria Porter (b.1833, Massachusetts). I also have a picture of their son, John Watson Eastes (b. Sep 1857, Galesburg, IL), and his next-younger sister, Fannie Maria Eastes (b. Oct 1859, Galesburg, IL). These are from an old family photo album that was recently discovered and scanned. Please let me know of any interest and I am happy to email a picture. I would love to know more about this line, since I have not been able to fill in many of the blanks on them.

Do you have birthdates for the following: Lucinda Craig whose mother and father were Sarah Eastes (daughter of Obediah eastes and Francis Harvey) and Thomas Craig ? I'm trying to locate my great grandfather John Harvey Craig and wondering if there is a connection (assuming Harvey is a family name - possibly mother's maiden).

Dear Shelly,
Thanks for the info. I did visit your website and copied the data on your Eastes line. I noticed that you have Obediah and Francis buried in Marion, IN, but they are buried in the Eastes-Harvey Cem. near Mt. Comfort. I have a partial list of other children by James and Mary Rhea as well as 5 or 6 more by his 2nd wife Rebecca Dorman if you don't already have those names. I had nothing on your James Asberry, though, so I was glad to get that information. I will share it with some of James Patterson's other descendants who still live in this area or visit here periodically. If I might have any data that would be of interest to you, I will be glad to forward it.

I am a descendant of Obediah Eastes through his daughter Sarah who married Thomas Craig. I have collected a lot of data on the Eastes family (although it is only one of many that I work on). I will be glad to share whatever data I have that might be of interest to you. Unfortunately, I do not have any information on his parents. I did find him listed in tax lists in KY, Lincoln Co., I think but would need to recheck. Oral history says they were near Crab Orchard, KY when they migrated. I believe that the family came from the Edgefield or Abbeville area of SC (96th District?) before moving to KY and then Franklin Co., IN and Hancock Co., IN. I have never made a concerted effort to try to dig up data on the family's residence in SC. I have heard stories about three Eastes brothers who came to America and the name of Mary Brown in mentioned in those stories (Obediah's mother, perhaps?), but I really don't have any verified information. I will be glad to share what I do have on Obediah's children if you want any of that.

The Eastes Families of Indiana is still available. I have a few copies left. I have a copy of the will from Roane Co., TN and have talked to the people at the courthouse on three occasions. Several of us have studied this and have found some of the families of Obadiahs siblings. Obadiahs sisters married Crumbliss, Webb, Bristoe, Mulliken, and Neighbors. One brother David shipton Estes stayed in TN and still has descendants in KY. They started in VA, moved to SC and then migrated to KY, TN and into IN.I Will be happy to send you all that I have on this subject if you will send me an E mail or snail address. I am in the process of consolidating all our records into one book for future researchers to use as a foundation.
Please contact me direct at Leastes2@aol.com
or Roy@eastes.com.
My snail is - 17271 Lowery Rd, Gulfport, MS 39503

A group of us made a study of the many (34)Elishas and I can send you a copy of our findings.

Dear Leroy,
I think we corresponded briefly several years ago. I am a descendant of Sarah Eastes who married Thomas Craig in Franklin Co., IN. I think you already have that lineage in your previous publication. It was my understanding that the Indiana Eastes book was no longer available. I would be interested in the proof you have that the Roane Co., TN Elisha is the right one. I seem to recall receiving some information from another Eastes researcher indicating that the Obediah mentioned in that Elisha's will was a different person from the one who came to Indiana. But I'm keeping an open mind since I haven't researched the family beyond IN and a little in SC. Be glad to trade data if I can be of any assistance. For clarification my line is Sarah Eastes/ Craig had Eleanor Jane Craig who m. William Smith. Their son Minnis Snyder (Smith) m. Jane (Jennie) Scotton. They were parents of Ethan Allen Snyder who m. Gertrude Wray. Their daughter Mildred Dale married Dennis Kingen (my mother and father).

Sharon

Thank you very much for the information. I never even thought to look at the 1870 atlas subscriber list to see if Michael was listed. I've tried to find his obituary, but of course there are no papers microfilmed for 1899 that have it. He did leave a will, but I haven't got a copy of it yet.

To try to help you on the Chittendon's, Do you have the 1850 census? Several are listed in Knox Twp.

There is a brief mention in 1899 history book of a Saloma Chittenden of Massachusetts who was the wife of John Muzzy and the mother of Eva J. Muzzy, wife of Albert Dwight Metcalf.

In 1878 history book this is the entire "biography" of Martin W. Chittenden: "Chittenden, Martin W., bookkeeper, Galesburg." I hate it when that happens.

I'll see what else I can find, and if you want the 1899 Metcalf biography or 1850 census, let me know.

Todd <sumwal@winco.net>

Just a quick followup on Anna Craig. I'm not positive, but I think that the Anna Craig with Michael and Isabella Smith in 1860 may have been Isabella's sister Dianna, the youngest child of Thomas Craig and Sarah Eastes. She is listed in the 1850 census as being age 9, so I have her birth date as about 1841, but I don't know much about her. She did marry in Franklin Co., IN 3 Oct 1871 Garrett or Garriot Harrell and she had a daughter Effie M. who married 30 Sep 1900 Hancock Co., IN Arthur Henson, but that's about all I've been able to find. I have wondered why she married in Franklin Co. I still don't have a good answer, but there must be more to this story. I do know that Dianna's father Thomas Craig remarried about a year after Sarah died and that his second wife had children from a previous marriage. Then Thomas and his second wife had 4 children. All of the children were not in the household at the same time, but I'm sure that their home was a pretty crowded place. Dianna must have gone to Franklin Co., IN when she returned from IL after Isabella died. No doubt she went there to live with relatives, but I wonder who. At any rate, that's my guess at this point about the identity of Anna Craig.

I have read all of your posts and several names have appeared that might help me find a few things I am looking for. I live in Knox Co., Illinois and do cemetery restoration and research. I'm not related to any of these families. Buried in Clark Chapel Cemetery there is a Michael C. Smith b Aug 31, 1821 d Apr 14, 1899 and his first wife Isabel b May 12, 1826 d Mar 13, 1862. I believe this is Isabel Craig a daughter of Thomas Craig and Sarah Eastes. A Michael C. Smith married Isabel Craig Oct 12, 1848 in Hancock Co., IN. They had several children including John M. Smith, Robert Pinckney Smith, Elijah Anderson Smith, and Milton E. Smith. The family arrived here between 1856 and 1860. In 1860 census there is also an Anna Craig in the Smith home, age 17, Isabel's sister?

What I'd really like to know is if you have any idea who Michael C. Smith's parents were.

Thanks for your time,

Todd in IL

Re: Obediah and Benjamin Whiteside

Lucinda Craig b. 20 Sep 1817 Franklin Co., IN d. 15 Oct 1858 m. 7 Dec 1839 Benjamin LeRue? Whiteside(s) and had 12 children. Lucinda Craig's father Thomas b. 1795 KY d. 21 May 1865 Hancock Co., IN m.1) Sarah Eastes b. Mar 1801 d. 10 Feb 1847. Thomas and Sarah had 8 children, but only 1 of them was a male - Obediah O. Craig. Obediah b. 2 Jul 1825/1827 m. 7 Nov 1852 Catherine Tice. As far as I know, they had only 2 children - a daughter Annie Elizabeth and a son James F. Craig b. 26 Sep 1858 IN d. 8 Aug 1864. After Thomas Craig's wife Sarah died, he m.2) Sarah Sabina Smith/England, widow of Milo England by whom she had 4 children. Sabina and Thomas Craig had 4 children - 3 daughters and one son - Thomas M. Craig b. Jun 1857. Thomas M. Craig m. 6 Jan 1881 Monora M. J. Shelby. I do not have much on the children of Thomas M. I did find that he was buried 16 Jun 1938 in Crown Hill Cem., Marion Co., IN. It might be helpful for you to know that there were several different Harvey families in the central IN area. Some were related, but there are definitely some unrelated groups represented. Some of the Harveys were doctors although most of them retained an earlier form of the name - Hervey. All the same, several people ended up with the middle name of Harvey or Hervey because they were named after one of the doctors. There may be a family relationship in your line, but I have some middle name Harveys and Herveys among my relatives, even now, and they are not Harvey/Hervey descendants. If I can be of any additional help, let me know.

Hello Sharon,

I take it that the "Hummm" means your interested!

The information I have on this marriage is from the recollections of a 90 plus year old cousin FRANK EDWARDS who wrote to my mother back in the 1960's. Then letters from a Mrs. Ruth M. Bundy.
Mrs. Bundy wrote that, (Dr.) "JOHN SAMUEL BELL married MARY E. W. 22 MAR 1876. He also had one son by previous wife, Dr. CHARLES BELL, a surgeon in Indianapolis. Grandpa BELL (Dr. J.S. BELL) delivered her grandmother WHITESIDE, that was probably how he became acquainted with Grandma BELL and after Grandpa WHITESIDES died courted her."
She also wrote that MARY EASTES WHITESIDES was a sister of JOHN CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS EASTES. That she had one daughter by her first marriage, EMMA WHITESIDES that married RALPH DOBBINS. MARY had two children by Dr. J.S. BELL, PAUL, a dentist in Greensburg, IN and ROBERT, a printer in Greenfield on the Courthouse Square.
She also added that the original spelling of the name was ESTES until a German school teacher changed it to EASTES.
And yet another contributor, BESSIE STEELE, 22 JAN 1964, wrote that according to the family bible of JOHN N. EASTES, MARY was the third child of his second wife SARAH ELIZABETH CASEY EASTES, MARY was born 9 APR 1847 in Hancock Co., IN.
There was some initial confusion when they first thought that MARY had married my great-grandfahter Dr. MILETUS BELL instead of Dr. J.S. BELL, his brother.
I am interested in recieving any information you would care to share about MARY and JOHN. I have only names and a few dates.

Harvey Bell

Hummm. I have in my records that John Samuel Bell b. 1837 married Mary Elizabeth Sarah Casey Eastes and that they had 2 children - Robert and Paul. However, this was supposedly her 2nd marriage. She m.1) 1 Oct 1868 Hancock Co., IN Obediah Whitesides. He died 11 Nov 1870. They had a daughter named Emma E. Whitesides. This info. is mainly from the Eastes genealogy printed in THE HANCOCK COUNTY KALEIDOSCOPE, so it may be in error. If so, I would appreciate receiving corrections.

This needs further verification, but I think that Benjamin LaRue Whiteside and Lucinda Craig had 8 children: William T. b. 1841, John H. b. 1843, James A. b. 1843, Obediah b. 1845 d. Nov. 11, 1870, Oliver b. 1846, Benjamin F. b. 1848, Sarah Ann b. 1849, and an infant b. 1858 that died. The tombstone(s) in the Eastes-Harvey Cem. gives the birth dates of Benjamin, John H., Sarah Ann, and William T., but no death dates. I don't know whether they survived to adulthood. James (possible John's twin?) died Feb. 2, 1925. Oliver d. Jan. 12, 1911. Obediah married Mary Elizabeth Sarah Casey Eastes. They had one child that I know of - Emma E. Whitesides who married John Nelson Dobbins.

This wasn't my direct line of Eastes' so I just noted the information and forgot about it. I will try to find the source of this. This is the info I have on Sarah:
Birthdate: December 5, 1920 possibly in N. Carolina. Death: February 12, 1863 and is burried at Mt. comfort Eastes Havey Cemetery in Hancock Co. Indiana.
I found the source for this information it is a 38 pages long typed on typewriter from Dr.John Wesley Eastes to Mrs. Glenn Estes Dill. It is his information he was sending to Mrs. Dill for her to look over.
The letter was dated 28, November 1968.
the letter says it was typed by John Wesley Eastes' son Walter L. Eastes. The letter also says that Estell who was married to Allen Eastes sent him the full names of the chldren of John N. Eastes which she and Bernice McCord (daughter of Carrie Eastes) copied from a family bible owned by Hazle Shelby (Fink) who is the daughter of Aunt Haley shelby (Sarah mahaaliah indiana Eastes). I can make copies of this to send you if you wish. There is not much information about Sarah elizabeth Casey Eastes except what I already included. The family history starts with Obediah Estes and Francis Harvey their children, Grand-children and great grandchildren. Just let me know by e-mail
swittman@mcn.net

When I went to the message board and read your message, I realized that you had intended to contact LeRoy not me. You may want to resend your message, making sure that he is the recipent. I have not heard from LeRoy for a month or so. I know that he was trying very hard to get all of his data set up to be posted on a website since it did not seem to be possible for him to complete the book as he had planned. I'm hoping that the absence of communication is due to his need to focus on achieving this goal, but I am concerned that his medical condition may have worsened. If you get a response from him, I'd really like to know.

I suppose there are some advantages, but so far I've just found the system frustrating, especially the links from other searches that used to take you right to the messages and that now take you to the message board homepage where you have to enter a whole bunch of choices to get anywhere close to the place you want to be. I'll learn eventually, I suppose. Take care.
Dear Sharon,
I received a reply from LeRoy within about an hour of posting my message, so guess he must just be busy. I apologize for posting to the wrong place, but I'm still trying to figure out the threads.
