Hi Kerry and Denise,

I know I'm a little late to the game, but just wanted to thank you both for the Eberhard information you have provided. Gustave is also my great great grandfather, as I am the grandson of his granddaughter, Irene Eberhard Schweitzer. I just attended the 3rd annual Eberhard family reunion in Evansville last weekend (Kerry I think I met your sister, Gayle), and got a chance to visit the cemetery in Haubstadt. If you come across any new leads, or would like to share any information pre-1800, I would appreciate it.

Bob Schweitzer

I have been working on linking Bernhard Eberhard to the next generation back. It has been difficult to find records that can prove a link to his parents. A tree was done a number of years ago that state his father was John Adam Eberhardt, another more recent work indicates that he may have been the son of Johannes Eberhardt and Susanna Guhl. Both have no documentation to prove a link to either man. The evidence to Johannes and Susanna allegedly has documentation through a bible record of the Corbin family, but the bible is not available to be authenticated. The bible itself was printed long after the deaths of Johannes and Susanna, so the information it may contain was entered by someone else. I wish it could be seen by other researchers, so it can be authenticated. I am hoping to be able to make a trip to Pennsylvania to see if I can find other records that might help confirm a link. Right now the time line and date of birth for Johannes Bernhard Eberhardt (b. 1743 in Glatten) could be a good match. Right now there is no evidence that Bernhard ever used the name Johannes. His marriage record, land records, and a church record only use Bernhard. The same goes for the name of his wife, Dorothy. Some researchers have added Barbara as her middle name, but there is no document to show this is true.

Please contact me a sca1390698@aol.com. I would like to exchange information with you. I'm sure that you can help me with Reuben's line and I have a great deal of information on many of Bernhard and Dorothy's descendants.
Sue Carney

No one had heard from Jimmy since he moved out west and got divorced. Mikeal, calls my brother every few years, a couple years ago he was living in the caribbean with a woman he had met while living in FL. Hank died the year before Uncle Mike in a car accident. I remember Donnie was a regional manager for Steak n Shake and Carol had just moved back to Indy from Missouri. I believe Linda was still married to Bruce Johnson, but I can't remember where they were living at that time.

Hope you get this, since its been a few years since your post.

Good luck!

They had only one child, Robert, born in Joliet. That's all I have other than Eleanor's family. Eleanor is my second cousin once removed.

Thanks, Michelle. I would love to see that picture. You and Wally are the first Eberhard relatives I have found. Old Gotthilf told his son and grandson that he had been separated from his family while leaving Germany and had never seen them again. There must have been some odd estrangement between him and John. So I was pleasantly surprised when I found his passport application on Ancestry yesterday that led me to the ship register with the family on it.

Betty

But as soon as I'm able, I'll do more research. Did you know that a memorial exists in Sharon Center, Ohio, with Gotthilf's name listed? (as a Civil War soldier). I have a photo - I can share it with you.
Would love to continue our conversation with more info!
Michelle

This is speculation based on the fact that John G. Eberhard and Gotthilf Eberhard (my ggrandfather)were living right across from each other at the Corner of E.Exchange St. in 1880. When Gotthilf arrived in NY 1853 on the John G. Coster with his family, that included a brother George born in 1827 or 1828--I wonder if his full name was Johann Georg? Not uncommon in those days to have Johann as a first name for all the sons and then they used the middle name at home. At some point a son moved to Cleveland and may be the one who founded the Eberhard Foundry there.

Info from Weisenberg Church, Northamptom/Lehigh Co., PA. There was a Johann/Hans Jurg EHRENHARDT and his wife, Veronica who had a son, Andress, born 4 Jan 1773. There was, also, a Hans Jurg EHRENHARDT and his wife, Maria Margaretha, who had a daughter, Maria Barbara baptized on 5 Mar 1761 and the sponsors were Barbara HEILMAN and Henrich EHRENHARD. And there was Georg EHRENHARD and his wife, Veronica who had a daughter, Eva Elizabeth on 12 May 1771. I would say Hans Jurg and Maria Margaretha would be worth investigating further.

Grant Eberhard is listed among the household members in the 1870 census. He is a son of Reuben and Mary Jane (McCormick) Eberhard and a brother to Elmer. Elmer's full name was Elmer Ellsworth Everhart. Sabie was Reuben's second wife. Mary Jane and Reuben divorced not long after 1870 and Mary Jane returned to Colon along with several of their children.

1870 Republic Twp., Republic Co., KS, US Census, pg. 53
Eberhart, Reuben 35 M farmer 300/500 b. MI

The spelling of the surname seems to have been entirely up to the individual. Most of the family used Eberhard although Eberhart, Everhart and Eberhardt also appear in the family.

Contact me at SCa1390698@aol.com for more info.
Sue
Re: Reuben Eberhard

June and Sue,
My information on Reuben is a bit limited, but I can tell you what I know (might not be too much).
My grandmother, Velma Verleen Everhart Tunks (married Merle Tunks, May 1, 1943) is the daughter of Frank Everhart (b. June 5, 1895 in Belleville, KS) and Lydia Pearl King (b. Oct. 15, 1893 in Cuba, KS).
Frank's father is Elmer Everhart (b. Feb. 4, 1854, d. March 5, 1952). Elmer was born in Colon, MI. He was married to Susie Blanchard (b. May 22, 1864, d. Aug. 6, 1918) from Wisconsin. For a time, it seems as though Elmer worked for the Rock Island RR as did his son Frank (my ggrandpa).
I know very little about any of Elmer's siblings. It is possible that Reuben might have been a brother. I have some old photocopies of a picture of Reuben (Civil War vet, 15th inf. Mich.) and a younger male who I believe is named Grant Everhart. On one of the photocopies, it states that Grant is a grandson but I am unsure how he fits in. This is one of the questions that I am trying to solve.
Initially, I thought that Elmer might be Reuben's son, but as I do the math, it is not possible. What is possible is that Elmer may be a younger brother or perhaps a cousin, but again, I do not know which leads to another question I am looking to answer.
Buried next to Reuben Eberhard is Sabie Smith Eberhardt (b. 1828?, d. 1912. I am not sure who she is, but I believe she may have been a wife to Reuben, based on the proximity of the grave. Again, another question I have.
I do have more information on Elmer's children (such as names and birth years) if you are at all interested, particularly Frank (WW 1 vet) as he is my grandma's dad, and his children.
Any information to fill in the holes would be more than appreciated. Thank you and take care.

Lawrence Tunks

Contact me at juneke@btc-bci.com.
I knew that there would be alot of ancestors from Reuben, as he migrated out west.

I descend from Daniel, and his three sons were in the Civil War.

Alot of the Eberhards changed the spelling on their last name. I have been doing Geneology for several years and some of my other lines also did the same thing.

We have much to talk about.

June

June,
It sounds as though you have tons of information regarding Reuben Eberhard. I have some questions, hoping you might have some answers:)
I am looking for some information regarding Reuben Eberhard who served in the Civil War for the Mich. 15th Inf. He is buried near Belleville, KS. It seems as though he was married to Sabie Smith (b. 1823 d. 1912 alongside Reuben). I believe one of their children is Elmer Everhart but am unsure as to why there is a change in spelling. Elmer is the father of my ggrandfather, Frank, who is the father of my grandmother, Velma. Do you know why there is a change in spelling?
Also, who is Reuben's father? From what line is he descended from?
His tombstone is very old and difficult to make out. I am not sure his birth or death dates.
In addition, do you know any of the family's history prior to John (1780-1857) and Elizabeth (1789-1862)?
Any information would be very appreciated. Thank you.

WOO HOO! What a thrill to get your response so quickly! If I'm not mistaken, was John J.'s wife's name Emma? (I've just started researching this family, so have been tracing them through the census records.) I received the death certificate for John G (died 1912) and it listed his parents as Frederick and Catherine Miller (supposing it was Mueller).
I would love to exchange information with you (most of what I will be able to supply would be the descendents of Mary/Louisa).
Perhaps you can contact me directly at PIPEL1961@yahoo.com.
Thanks again! I look forward to hearing from you.
Michelle
Centennial, CO
