Hi! My name is Patricia Schraut. I've been researching the Darbo family and just recently came across this post. My grandmother, Amanda Ragna Darbo, died in 1930 when my mother was very young so we did not have any information about the Darbo family. My great grandfather is Ole (Olaus) Hartvigsen Darbo, brother of Charles (Carl) Hartvigsen Darbo. Ole emigrated to the U.S.A. in 1885 or 1886. He joined his brother, Charles, in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

When Johan Hartvigsen Darbo emigrated to Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1905, he and his family lived with Charles and Ole. John Darbo and his family then moved to California.

Ole H. Darbo married Ragna Hanson in 1912 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. They had two daughters, Amanda Ragna Darbo (b. 1907) and Olga Hazel Darbo (b. 1913). Both daughters were born in Minneapolis. Both daughters married, but Olga Hazel Darbo did not have any children.

Amanda Ragna Darbo (d. 1930) married Clarence Arthur Pigman (d. 1970) in 1925 in Todd County, Minnesota. They had three children. William (b. 1926 d.2004), Lila (b. 1927), and Laura (b. 1929 d. 1999). William had 9 children, Lila and Laura each had 7 children. My mother, Laura Pigman married Alex Schraut (d. 1990) in 1946 in Minnesota.

Please contact me at pjschraut@comcast.net

Hi, My name is Donna Hunter. I just came across this message board. I am a direct descendant of Karen Louise. My great grandfather Johan Hartvigsen/John Darbo was the son that came to the states. He and his family immigrated permanantly to the US in 1905. They initially went to Minneapolis, Minn. but soon moved and settled in Napa, CA. My grandfather Leo Hartvigsen/Darbo was only a baby when they came here. My mother is Lorraine Darbo. I have done most of my research using the Digital Archives in Norway online. The name Eberlein/Eberlin began to show up the farther back I went. I was always confused by it because it did not fit the patronymic naming used in Norway. I am very excited to learn about this German line I knew nothing about until today. Also very interested to know what descendants you reached and if you are still in contact. I don't have an Ancestry membership currently but I still get alerted when a reply to one of my messages is posted or my email is pikchik@gmail.com
So excited to hear from you!
Thanks,
Donna

Eberleins in Cincinnati

Hi, thanks for the response. Yes, my Eberleins were from Germany. Specifically, my G-G-Grandmother, Elizabeth Eberlein, arrived through the port of New Orleans in 1852 (from the port of Bremen). The passenger log specified her destination as Cincinnati. I'm assuming she was joining some other Eberleins who were already residing there. She married Christian Boeniker in 1853. Her town of origin was Sandbersel(?), Bavaria, which I'm still trying to locate (spelling is probably off).

Ray

Skip, thanks for the message. I'm still excited just thinking about this too. I always tell people to post a message but don't be disappointed if you don't hear something right away. I'm hoping that sometime in the very near future I'll get the details of Paul's death. The only sad thing is that my dad isn't here to share the news. I'll keep everyone posted on the outcome. Thanks for the message.

Suzie

Paula, after I showed your email to my husband, he looked up the Sterope on the Internet and there was the name of an island mentioned in the article so I'm assuming that's where Paul was buried. His dad was my grandfather's brother but Uncle Ole distanced himself from his brothers so no one knew exactly what happened to Paul other than he died during the War. Paul's brother came to my house back about 1973 when I hadn't been at this family researching very long and even he did not know the details of his brother's death. I am so grateful for your email and really do appreciate your responding. I'll let you know what happens.

I'm so glad you saw my message. I wasn't sure you were still actively seeking info. When I saw your post I called my Dad right away and he immediately knew who your cousin was and the few details about his death. His friend, whose daughter you contacted, was a close friend of your cousin and he has far more details--including the name of the island in the Pacific where he's buried. I don't know if her email is still active, so if you don't get an answer, let me know and I'll find out how you can contact him with snail mail. Regards, Paula Wheeler

My father is Paul H. Eberlein, who served on the Sterope during WWII. He and my Mom live in Port Royal, SC. He knew your cousin, in fact, Dad's feet were at Paul Hyatt's head when they were in their bunks. As soon as I saw your post I called him and he remembered your cousin right away--said he was a really nice guy. He is in touch with another shipmate who was with Paul Hyatt when he died and who can give you more details than Dad can. Dad said they were getting supplies loaded onto the ship in a cargo net and your cousin and the other sailor were in the net. The net came loose and your cousin fell to his death. He's buried on an island, but Dad can't remember which one. You can contact the other sailor through his daughter at dmontieth@aol.com. Good luck with your search.

Sorry it has taken me so long to answer. I haven't been working on my genealogy for some time. I am a bit confused -- the information that I have is that Johan Hendrick Halvorsen Eberlin is my 3rd great grandfather m. to Oline M. Christofersdatter. I have the dates of their births (year) and marriage date the same as you have. I have only one daughter listed and that is Sophia Kalaathe Beathe Johansdatter b.15 Jun 1829 in Kongsberg, and died 11 Oct. 1906 in Angelica, WI, USA. She is my 2nd great grandmother. She must have had more siblings but I do not have any info on that. Is Karen possibly a sister? Sophia m. John Johnsen Kongsgarden (later name changed to John Johnson)b. 12 Oct 1829 in Kongsberg and died 26 Jan 1905 in Angelica. Married 25 Jan 1851.
Children of John and Sophia:
Johan Henrick b. 27 Sep 1851 in Kongsberg
Hans Jacob b. 18 Dec 1854 Kongsberg
Louis b. 12 Aug 1857 Kongsberg d. 12 May 1909 Angelica, WI, USA ( he was my great grandfather)
Thea Sophia b. 02 Jun 1860 Kongsberg d. 10 Aug 1940 USA
Helik (Aleck) b. 1863
Marthene (Martin) b. 12 Feb 1864
Christian b. 22 Aug 1870 d. 1932 USA
That is the information I have on my direct family. I also have a lot more on the descendants of some of John and Sophia's children.
I don't have anything before Johan Eberlin.
Does this fit in with your family or it another line entirely?
Your forefather Halver Eberlin is born in 1820, and his proper name is Halvor Johansen Eberlin. Johansen=patronym, and Eberlin is a German family name. Halvor's parents: Oline Maria Christophersdaughter b. 1791, married 27th Dec. 1817 to Johan Hendrik Halvorsen Eberlin b. 1791 in Kongsberg. I am descendant of Karen Lovise who is Halvor's younger sister born 1822. I would like to give you all info I have, but I first have to organize some translation. Many of Eberlins were miners or other kind of workers at silver mines at Kongsberg, Buskerud county, in Kongsberg. community. It was hard conditions in middle of 1800 and later, so many had to leave. My line from Karen Lovise to present is: Karen Lovise (1822-1905)x Hartvig Hansen (1824-1921, cottager, forest worker) son: Johan Hartvigsen Darbo (1854-1944, blacksmith, went to USA in 1881, left his illegal son in Norway) x Ingeborg Mosand, son: Peder Mosand (1876-1967). Peder is my great grandfather. Please contact me: lenahaak@online.no

I was searching the internet for any other people researching the Eberlin family, and came upon your posts. My ggg-grandfather was Halver Eberlin, born in Norway about 1819. I have never been able to find what region of Norway this family was from, and was surprised to find that the Eberlin name was German. My gg-grandmother Helvene Eberlin Swenson was born in Norway in March 1856, and according to the 1900 census, she came to this country with her parents that same year. I located them in the 1860 Federal Census in Strongs Prairie, Adams County, Wisconsin. I also located a newspaper article from 1953 about the centennial celebration of the Lutheran Church in Arkdale, Wisconsin. The article stated that "Eberlin" was one of the men who built the original log church for the Norwegian Lutheran Church at Roche-A-Cri. The church began use in 1859, so that places him in Adams county before then.
Halver and Annmaria's children's names were Sophie, Johana, Torger, Helvene, George Oliver, and John. Sophie, Johana, Torger and Helvene were all born in Norway between 1844 and 1856; George and John were born in Wisconsin in 1859 and 1861. Only Johana (Gullickson) and Helvene (Swenson) married and had children, so the Eberlin name of this branch died with the sons Torger, George Oliver (aka Halver) and John.
Since the first names are also similar to the ones listed in some of the Eberlin posts on this message board, I believe my Eberlins are also related to the original Johan Halverson Eberlin you have also researched. Can you help me with any information from Norway?

Hi,
I would suggest that you search for message boards for the surnames that are part of the family of Paul Hyatt, as you might get lucky and find someone researching the same family.

You post your question on a board for people researching the Eberlein family, and if he's not related, you don't stand a very good chance of making a connection with someone who might have useful information for you.

Hope you have good luck finding the information you seek!
Skip
Admin of the Eberlein Message Board

I'm looking for any information about my cousin Paul Raines Hyatt who died aboard the USS Sterope, 4 Apr 1944. I believe at the time they were somewhere in the South Pacific but the details of his death are unknown. Would anyone happen to know if he had a wife or a girlfriend named Isabelle Pockes?

Best regards,
Suzie Nash

I'm Sandie and looking for info on Helen Eberlein Bingle from the north side of Pgh. and McKees Rocks area. Kena was deceased and both parents were originally from Gemany.

If you hae any info please email me at sandie.kratt@gmail.com.

Thank You

Sandie,

You contacted me a couple of years ago about the Bingle family tree. I would like to do some more work on it, and I thought we could finally get together. I have a photo of William (Wiler / Wilhelm) Bingle and Katherine Appel (spouse) from Hesse Cassel, Germany and all of their family tree down to me - Connie Bingle Shaw. It is just very hard to find the extra time. Please email me at connie_cpa@hotmail.com

Thanks
Connie

I am looking for a connection to a Margaretha Eberlien/Eberlein. I am not certain of the spelling, but was given the first spelling from another genealogist. She was born in about 1848, married in abt 1871 and immigrated to the US bet 1876 - 1879. She married Charles "Carl" Haun. The only thing I know is that they came from Germany. Records show Prussia, but that's a pretty large area to be specific. If anyone has found such a person in their records, I'd love to see what you have. Thank you.

Wisconsin Eberlein's

Hi Kate!

Being as you've traced this family to Milwaukee, WI, you stand a VERY GOOD chance of this family being from one of 2 lines!

Looks like your Louisa Pfitzer (daughter of Fredericka Cora Eberlein) was born about 1853. Let us know if you find out where in Wisconsin she was born. There is a branch of Eberlein's that originated out of the town of Shawano, WI. That would be Kirsten's line. The other branch of Eberlein's came from the counties of Juneau Co. and Columbia Co., WI. That is my family.

At this time, I do not have a Fredericka Cora EBERLEIN or an Louisa PFITZER in my line. Please let us know if you find out where Louisa was born!

Skip
Brainerd, MN, USA
Admin Eberlein board
List Mom Eberlein-l@rootsweb.com
