Hi Ann,
Thanks for your quick reply,The only written evidence i have of John Thomas Eccles was the ships manifest of 1879 from Liverpool to Boston were he travelled to with his friend William Rostron.William stayed in Philadelphia and married there, they both worked in the mills as weavers,i think i found John on the 1880 census but lost him upto 1892 when i found his marriage to Catherine(Diskin)Mills whose parents were from Ireland.Would be grateful for any info/no matter how small you can come up with?

Cheers Ken
ps/Do you have electoral registers every year as in England.

Ken,

My Eccles came from Ireland, not England, so I don't think I can be of much help. One of my grandfather's brothers was also named John Thomas. Did your work in the mills? In my searching, I have found a number of ECCLES families living in New Bedford MA (in the 1930s) as well as a mention about someone by the name John Thomas Eccles (though not my line) working for the Ponemah Mills in Taftville CT in the early 1890s.

Good luck with your search.
Ann

I am researching another ECCLES line who lived in Philadelphia at the turn of the century. (No James in my line of names.) But I copied the information from the 1899 City Directory for Philadelphia which listed 4 men named James Eccles:
1) Jas -- a carpenter who lived at 2340 N 29th
2) Jas -- a machinist who lived at 2109 E York
3) Jas R -- a carpenter who lived at 1012 S Water
4) Jas W -- a bookkpr who lived at 531 N 19th

Perhaps this will help you.
Ann
I have a wedding announcement or invitation. It is for Alice Clayton, and Edmund Wright Lynch. The wedding was Feb 7, 1900,Wenesday evening at 8:00, and was hosted by Alice's Aunt and Uncle, Mr. and Mrs. James Eccles. The address given was 2409 E. York Street, Philadelphia, PA. Alice Clayton is my husband's grandmother. Would love to hear if this ties into your family somehow. I am thinking maybe James Eccles wife was the relation to Alice, but I know nothing for sure, and no names.

Brian,

Thanks for the last info. Can you give me your email address so that I can attach the 1911 census as you can't send attachments via the ancestry website. It is quite interesting as 1911 was the first census to be written in the handwriting of the head of the household which he has written as John Lawrence, so I think that answers my query about his name. One of the questions on the 1911 census is how many children have been born to that couple and how many are still alive. I won't spoil the surprise as I find it interesting to look at new documents without knowing exactly what is on them but you may find it interesting to see how many children John and Jane had, along with the peole living at the address with them.

My email is 1andecc@gmail.com (first digit being a number one not a letter l). I look forward to your comments when you see it !

Regards

Andy

Hi Andy,
Many thanks for getting back to me. I have no objections to you putting a picture of my mother on your site. I will also upload one of my father so you can have that one too. The others in the household will probably be William and Maggie who are children of Jane Pugh ( to her first husband ). To answer your question about John Lawrence or Lawrence John, I really don't know. In 1851 census he is Jno Lawrence and then in1861 he is Lawrence John and in both the 1881 and 1901 he is plain John. Tracing up the Arnold line from the records in St Mary's, Great Crosby ( which are online )I can get as far as John Arnold born 18.5.1777 Altcar and his wife Ann Jackson. They married 5.11.1795 in Formby. This detail was give to me by someone online but I cannot vouch for it's accuracy. I don't have the 1911 census so would appreciate it by email.
Regards
Brian
I notice you have him as Lawrence John but the census records have him as John Lawrence. Do you know which is correct?

I have a copy of the 1911 census record for him, which shows your father along with quite a few others in the household. If you haven't seen it, I can send you a copy if you give me your email address.

Regards

Andy
Hi,
This is not a reply to your message on William Eccles, but more to the Arnold family connection. On looking at Louisa, I note that you have her mother as born in Liverpool with a surname Johnson. I believe her to be born in Manchester and with a surname Lee. See the 1881 census you have and it shows she was born Manchester.
Hope this is of help.
Brian

He married Anna Maria SPACH (1828-1915) on 23 Feb 1846 in what was this Stokes County, NC (now Forsyth Co., NC). They are listed in 1850 and 1860 Davidson Co., NC censuses. Anna and James ECCLES had two children Mary Augusta Eccles (1854-1926) and Luther Simeon ECCLES (1857-1907). Is James a descendant of your Rev.
To: Theresa Fleming (nee Eccles). Theresa Eccles was my mother's married name. She recently died (10/5/07) at the age of 100 years, 8 mos. 9 days. She was born in Phila. and married Joseph Patrick Eccles, also born in Phila (30 November 1905). His parents were Thomas Joseph Eccles born 20 July 1879 in Ireland and Mary Elizabeth Kenny born 29 July 1884 in Phila. Thomas Eccles parents were James & Sarah Eccles, both born in County Armagh, Ireland. Are you related to this branch of the Eccles family?

Hi Nancy,

Theresa Fleming (nee Eccles) is my aunt so I thought I'd jump in here. It doesn't sound like we are related to your line. I've traced our Eccles back to Thomas Eccles b. 1823 and his father, James Eccles b.1780, in Bolton, Lancashire, England. It is such a coincidence though that my aunt Therese also married a Joseph Patrick but he was a Fleming!

Lori Willcox (nee Cubbage)

Hi, Jennifer, we have traced our family back to Eccleston Scotland as best as we can. We found it interesting , as the story goes that there was father who named his sons with various spellings of the name; ex: Echols, Eckles. We always wondered if the name was associated with the fact that the word Jesus Christ used when he stated " upon this Rock I will build my church (Ecclesia=called out assemly. Perhaps some of our past ancestors believed in the "City set on a Hill" the same as my family does now. Hope to hear from you again, may God enilghten you journey :)!

Eccles family from Gloucestershire to New Zealand

Alberta Eccles went to Christchurch with other members of the Eccles family. There is a probate record for her father Samuel Eccles in Christchurch from 1891. Her sisters Alma Eccles and Clara Ella Eccles were married in New Zealand. Clara married Edwin James Thomas in 1874. Alma married Robert Richards Pierce in 1875. The family are recorded on the 1871 UK census, which means that they must have travelled to New Zealand between 1871 and 1874.

Hello,

It's great to hear from you. Here is the information that I got from the UK censuses:

1841 - Samuel Eccles living in Worcestershire. Samuel's wife living in Worcestershire with her parents James and Susan Williams.

1851 census:
Samuel Eccles 35
Pamela? Eccles 26 wife
Fredric Eccles 5 b. Bulresly, Worcestershire
Clara Eccles 4? b. Worcestershire
Rebecca Eccles 2 b. St Pauls, Worcestershire
Lenssia Eccles 8 Mo b. Sheffield
Susan Williams 55 (wife's mother)
Living in Sheffield - 4 West Lane

1861 census:
Samuel Eccles 46
? Eccles 36 wife
Clara E Eccles 10 b. Sheffield, St. John
Matilda L Eccles 8 b. St Martin, Worcestershire
ALMA Eccles 5? b. Born Gloucester. (my great grandmother)
Living. 15 Harrington Place. Gloucester.

I guess that the 5 on the 1861 census for Alma might be 5 months. I searched for Alma's birth record at http://www.freebmd.org.uk/ but didn't find her.

Are you in New Zealand?

Rob.
