Hi Jackie,
Have Oliver George's ancestors back to mid 1500's.
I can send details if you contact me via my email address on my profile (see previous message).
I have been with Ancestry since it started but membership has lapsed as there is nothing new there for me now so I am unable to see your tree at expat66

Best wishes
Bernie

Bernie,
Thankyou for your reply. My parents had a very interesting ( and moving!) visit to the Devonshire Regimental museum in Dorchester. It seems that many young men from Birmingham ended up in the Devonshires. The Regimental museum did not have any personal information for the Oliver George they had on record ( no date of birth/ address/ next of kin etc.)but we had pretty much come to the conclusion that this has to be one and the same man.
I have a more updated family tree under the user name expat66. I wonder if you have any more info. on the Eccleshalls in our family tree? Regards Jackie

I am trying to establish whether the Oliver George Eccleshall, who was killed in 1915 while fighting in the Great War was my mother's uncle. She had never heard of him till I started researching our family tree on "Ancestry". The military records don't give a date of birth and the memorial at Loos lists the soldier's age as being unknown ( our Oliver George Eccleshall was born in Birmingham in March 1888). We are hoping that the Devonshire Regimental Musuem in Dorchester will be able to help us, but I was also wondering whether anyone else has any more information, family stories etc?
many Thanks
Jackie

Jenny, does any of this sound familiar to you? I just recently received this from a granddaughter of one of the daughters mentioned here--I am a granddaugter of another one of the girls mentioned:

The Lyons family featured in an article and photograph published in The News of the World, published in 1909, around June, and headlined ‘Big Irish Family’.

The photograph of the Lyons family became known as the family photograph. Featured are the parents, William James Lyons (age 52) and Mary Frances Lyons (formerly Synnott) (age 47), school teachers at Drummully, near Clones, County Monaghan, and their nine daughters and five sons.

The daughters’ names and ages are: Catherine (29), Mary Frances (27), Lucy Ellen (25), Isabel Florence (21), Margaret Jane (19), Elizabeth (17), Ethel Gertrude (12), Eileen Maude (10) and Winifred (8). The sons are: William James (23), Joseph (18), Thomas (14), George (13) and John (5).

The photograph shows two other men. I have been told they are a Bert Wilson and Jack Good, married to the two eldest daughters, Catherine and Mary Frances, and at the time the photograph was taken all four were home from SOUTH AFRICA. Family story has it that Winifred went to South Africa as well later.
Hi Maureen, nice to hear from you. I gave up on this forum a long time ago. I have a paid membership at genes reunited. If you have a membership there, email me and I'll grant you access to my tree. It's quite extensive on the Lyons and Eccleshall sides and growing. Strange that you should contact me today out of the blue - I received an email this morning from someone asking if the Harry Pickles in my tree is related to their Pickles. I was going to call your mom ;-))

This sounds a lot like my family.

My father was William John Eccleshall, born in Liverpool on 11.2.1911, died 5.12.1987. He had a twin brother, Albert, who was killed in an road accident aged about 7.

His father was Louis though this is also spelled Lewis on some documents. His mother was Mary O'Flaherty.

He had a sister Mary (married name Taylor) and several brothers. I remember John, Patrick (Paddy) and Lewis. Paddy and Lewis moved to the Birmingham area.

I know we have some Lyons in the family. I remember a cousin Mary who had a son Raymond who sadly died at about 13 following an accident at New Brighton swimming pool. Although a couple of years my senior he was a great friend of myself and cousin Peter (Mary's son).

I also remember a cousin, John Lyons, who lived in Rainhill near Liverpool.

We have mostly lost touch over the years and I am very much a novice at geneology so I haven't made any great inrods into our history yet. Any helpful information would be much appreciated.

Hi Michael

The best way to start finding out about your family history is to ask your relatives!

I have only 3 Christopher ECCLESHALLs in my database.
Most of the records pre-date 1945 (except for my own family).

Anyway send me your father's and your birthdates and I'll check again
If you can send me your grandparents names and birthdates (and birthplaces) I will probably find them for you...

Yes thanks - I did know of the Any-Web site.

Cheers, Mike

PS As for pronouncing ECCLESHALL well - it probably depends on where the family lived and what accent they had!

My ancestors were from the East End of London and my grandmother was an ECCLESHALL. My father said they pronounced it Eccles-all - but perhaps the H 'ad been dropped when saying Eccles-hall - Cockneys would do that!

I believe Eccle-shall is used by many.

How do your family pronounce it?
This is all so fascinating. Can't imagine going back as far as 1700's. Does this mean that you and Teresa and I could somehow have common relatives? I'm really new to all this and am extremely ignorant as far as who is what to whom [like 2nd cousins, and removed relatives etc]. Since I never knew my grandparents or any other relatives.

I'm hoping to get some info from other boards on this website on my mothers side too. The known family Dickinson/Taylor, also Liverpool, is extremely limited.

I'd like to remain in touch with you as you may be a mine of info when I start getting 'in over my head' ;-)

Once again, thank you for your assistance.

Yes Jenny - Teresa is your father's cousin.

So I think that makes you second-cousins.

It's great to be able to put relatives in contact with each other!

Especially when they both have an interest in family history.

It brings my dusty old research to life and makes it really worthwhile.

Mike

My paternal grandmother was Eliza ECCLESHALL b.1889 Hackney.

I have been tracing back my ancestors for 30 years and I became stuck with my gt-gt-gt-grandfather William ECCLESHALL b.c.1792/3 Middlesex? - could not trace baptism nor death/burial only marriage.

I have yet to establish a link beween my London ECCLESHALLs and those from other parts. Reputedly the ECCLESHALLs appear to have originated from Eccleshall, Staffordshire.

So I decided to transcribe the GRO BMD indexes for ECCLESHALLs and now have them from 1837-1940.

I have been in contact with Bernard Beech who runs the One Name Study for ECCLESHALLs and has many records on computer. I've extended the BMD coverage that he had begun.

I will email Bernard to let him know your interests as he has more info on the pre-1837 records - he also sent me this info too - which I have combined with my BMD data.

I will gather any more info that I have on your families and post it in a while!

Please do let me know what further you find on ECCLESHALLs to add to my database - it may help others (and maybe me) to find more relatives.

Regards, Mike

Hello again Mike.
You may have noticed from this board that Teresa Eccleshall is related to my grandparents and gives my great grandparents [parents of Louisa Jemima] as Louis Eccleshall and Mary Ann Flaherty.

This is so exciting. Another surname to research!

I've just figured this reseach could go on beyond my lifetime and we may never get to the very beginning!

Jennifer Williamson ( Lyons)

You must be the grand-daughter of my aunt Louisa Eccleshall and Uncle John Lyons. Your grandmother was one of my father's three older sisters. My father was John Eccleshall, the fourth child, and first son,of Louis Eccleshall and Mary Ann Flaherty ( Your great-grandparents) The 'uncle Paddy' you mention was Patrick Eccleshall, who together with his younger brother Louis moved to Birmingham in the 1930's, and married and raised their families in West Bromwich. If you want any more information about the family ( there were 10 children ! ) e-mail me directly.

Thank you so much for this info, Mike.
This must be my grandmother. She died age 95 in 1997.

She had a brother who was known as 'Uncle Paddy'. May have been Birmingham resident and perhaps deceased now. Possibly Patrick Eccleshall and I think originally from Ireland County Cork.

Hoping to get the names of my grandmothers parents tomorrow. Will post here again if I can establish any more.

Kind regards and thank you once again for your assistance.

Hi Jenny,
I have the GRO Marriage Index entry for your grand-parents:

GRO MI Q4 1925 ECCLESHALL, Louisa (spouse LYONS) Liverpool 8b 351

and possibly the index entry for her birth:

GRO BI Q4 1902 ECCLESHALL, Louisa Jemima W.Derby 8b 589

Does the age of your grandmother when she died match this possible birthdate?

If so I have several other records of ECCLESHALLs relating to W.Derby around 1902. So they may be relatives too...

If your grandmother was not born around 1902 tell me her age when she died and I will check again as I have other Louisas but not Louisa Jemimas!

Do you know your Louisa Jemima's parents names?

Hope I can help some more.

Regards, Mike Wheatley

My father's family, although now based in Liverpool and district were originally from the parish of Wrockwardine or Wrocherdine in Shropshire. My great-grandfather was Louis Eccleshall and his wife was Jemima. My grandfather, also called Louis, came to Liverpool at the end of the 19th century and married an Irish girl. They had eight children, six of whom remained in the Liverpool area, the remaining two moving to Birmingham.
