Re: Philip Eckhardt of Ohio

My great grandfather, George Ferdinand Eckhardt, was born in Dover, Ohio, according to the 1850 census. His mother, my great, great grandmother, was Catherine Eckhardt, who was born in the early 1820s in Germany. Catherine had another son, Charles, who was born in 1840. Catherine was listed in the 1850 census in Dover as being widowed. Catherine also had another person living with them named Lewis. Some of these names, dates and places seem to overlap with those in your query. I did not find Philip or John Philip Eckhardt in the 1850 census in Dover, Ohio. Please let me know if you have found out additional information that may time these names together.

My great great grandfather was Frederick (spelling unknown) Eckhardt. He came from Koenigsberg after fighting in 2 or 3 Prussian wars. The name Ameila Stubbe sounds familiar, so maybe this is right Frederick. He ended up in Minnesota. I do know that Frederick's son, Charles, or "Chas" Eckhardt was my great grandfather. He was married to Julia Strand. Their son, Carl Eckhardt was my grandfather. I don't know when the Eckhardts ended up Minnesota. If any of this sounds familiar, please let me know.

David A. Eckhardt
Penn Hills

David Alan Eckhardt, 66, of Penn Hills, died of massive brain trauma from falling off a ladder outside his home Thursday, Jan. 13, 2011. Born Sept. 3, 1944, in Pittsburgh, he was a son of the late Henry T. and Martha (Riffle) Eckhardt. Surviving are his wife of 17 years, Darlene Kuszyk, of Penn Hills; siblings, the late Carol (Eckhardt) Klein (Harold), of Saltsburg, and Kenneth Eckhardt, of Mississippi; also survived by two nephews, Jeffrey Klein, of Saltsburg, and Christopher Klein, of Clarksburg; niece, Megan Klein, of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; two brothers-in-law, Jack (Barbara) Kuszyk, of Lincoln University, and Bob Kuszyk, of Penn Hills; and a sister-in-law, Caroline (Kuszyk) Rossman (George), of New Bern, N.C. David was employed by the Penn Hills School District's Transportation Department. He previously worked at Westinghouse Research and Technology Center in Churchill as a senior mechanical engineer. He had more than 20 years of experience in mechanical, chemical and nuclear engineering design, operation, analysis and evaluation. He was issued 15 patent disclosures and three patents. David was a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering. He also attended Penn State University for Industrial Engineering. He was a captian in the Army and infantry unit commander in the United States and Vietnam and U.S. Army Intelligence School. David was a member of the Docent Council at the Pittsburgh Zoo and PPG Aquarium. He enjoyed metal and wood machining, electronics, railroading, music and sailing the Chesapeake Bay. He had an exceptionally acute intellectual ability and a relentless curiosity about the world. David was a simple man, really, but a perfectionist through and through. He loved to fix mechanical things or solve any problem that came along. He also tried to be a good role model for kids. He was a wonderful husband, but he would say he didn't think so. David was always humble in that regard. He was mostly a quiet, caring man who believed that everyone should do their best. He impacted more people than he would ever know. Family and friends will be received from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday in the FINDLAY C. WYLIE FUNERAL HOME, 11311 Frankstown Road, Penn Hills. Service and interment are private.

Re: John Eckhardt married Anna Elizabeth Fisch in Hesse, Germany

Hi there! John Eckhardt 11-07-1826 to 12-11-1913 and his wife Anna Elizabeth 1850-1933 are buried in the St. Paul Lutheran Church cemetary on Red Hill near Parkersburg, WV (as are some of my relatives). My great grandmother was Mary Catharine (Brethauer) Stephenson and her godmother at her baptism in 1880 in Ellenberg-Breitenau Germany was Maria Catharine Eckhardt nee Fisch of Beuren. Mary's maternal grandparents were Georg and Martha (Woelling) Fisch. Martha emigrated from Ellenberg, Germany with the Brethauers (Mary and her parents, Heinrich and Catharine (nee Fisch) Brethauer) in 1882. I don't know anything else about the Eckhardts, just the Brethauers. Hope this helps!

Philip Eckhardt of Ohio

I am looking for information on a Philip Eckhardt, born around 1832 in Germany. He married Mary Heckerman in 1853 in Cuyahoga County, Ohio and had 7 children: Anna, Louisa, Adam, August, Katie, Amelia, and Lydia. There is a Philip or John Philip Eckhardt on a census from 1850 in Dover, Ohio with a birthdate around 1826. His parents are listed as F.L.C. and Ann, siblings are Catherine & Louisa. I found this family's ship's passenger list from 1835 which lists additional siblings: Lewis Charles, Elizabeth, Charles, George, and Mary. I can not verify if this is the same Philip Eckhardt. Any info would be appreciated.

John Eckhardt married Anna Elizabeth Fisch in Hesse, Germany

Hello, I am searching for the parents of my grandmother. John Eckhardt was born 07 Nov 1826 in Germany and married Anna Elizabeth Fisch in 1873 in Germany. She was born 23 Jul 1850 in Germany. They came to America in 1893, landing in NY on 28 Apr 1893. They settled in Wood County, WV where other German Lutherans were settling at the time.
John was married before but I do not know the name of his first wife or if there were children.
We only found a not in my grandmother's things after her death in 1971 that said he had been married before.
The passenger record from Ellis Island said their place of residence was Benen, Germany and the point of departure was Bremen, Germany.
13 German Lutheran families migrated to the Wood County, WV area in the early 1880's. Some of the other family names were: Roth, Otte, Schueler, Brethauer, Fisch. (Thse families all intermarried.)
Anyone having any info on these families, please reply. Thank you.

I too have Eckhardt ancestors from the Thuringia area, from a town called Dankmarschausen. My ancestor Conrad Eckhardt immigrated around 1856 into NYC and his father went to Canada I believe. Conrad also had two brothers that went to Elkhart, Indiana. Does any of that sound familiar?

Eckhart/Eckhardts in Ohio in the 19th Century

Hi,

Myself and my husband are doing research on his family roots, particularly his father's side of the family, the Eckharts. We know that his great-grandfather was Henry P. Eckhart (originally Eckhardt) who was born approx. 1833. He came over from Hanover, Saxony, Germany in 1846 with his two brothers Charles W. (born 1841) and William (1839) and his sister Lavina (1844). Henry married Sarah Judd and lived in Scioto county and had a least nine children. Charles fought in the civil war. We know that their father was also Henry. At some stage, according to the 1850 census, a woman called Louisa Eckhart also lived with them and another child called Elmyra Eckhart. We think she might have been their mother. We are looking for more information on their origins in Germany. We cannot find them on any passenger lists around that time. We are currently living in Berlin in Germany and would love to find their original home so that we can visit it. Also, my husband's father is now 85 and he would really love to find out more about his family. I would really appreciate any help at all. We have kind of hit a wall these last few days. Many thanks in advance!

Thanks. When I checked the 1880 census, your ancestor had given his birthplace as Prussia. His wife's birthplace was Alsace. The 1900 census says Germany for both, but of course by then Alsace was part of Germany. I suspect he was not one of the Alsatian Eckhardts. The name is quite common in many parts of the German speaking world.

She seems to have died after 1900 and before 1910. NJ has a great public records research facility in Trenton where you could look up her death certificate and find out her maiden name and perhaps the names of her parents. Likewise for your g-grandfather.

I realize I did not fully answer your questions. He was my g-grandfater. I don't know his wife Mary's maiden name. Everybody always spelled the name as Eckhardt in their family. Joseph was born 1n 1825 and Mary 1824. I hope this helps you. If it strikes any bells, let me know.

His name was Joseph and his wife's name was Mary. He was one of the original settlers in Folsom, New Jersey, which was called New Germany at the time. Apparently he arrived around 1850, and claims to have spent his first night in America on his own land?. His children were Jacob, Elizabeth, George, Maggie and Catherine.

Hi, I'm assuming your g-grandfather's name was Eckhardt since you responded to my post. Did they spell it the same way? Can you tell me more? His first name? Do you know his wife's maiden name?

I have since discovered the actual town the family came from and a lot of the collateral names.

Thanks.

My ggfather emigrated to NJ around 1850. His wife Mary lists Alsace as her birthplace in one of the US census. He must have lived close by, if not actually in Alsace.

In what I think are my line of Eckhardts, there is a Karl Eckhardt born in 12/1889. In the 1900 Census, it shows Karl living in Cleveland with his brother Frederic (4/1888), and their parents August (born 1862) and Frederica (born 1866). August had a sister, Katie. I believe I am a descendent of Katie Eckhardt. I have more information, you can email me at aliapel@adelphia.net. I have no more information on Karl but would like some, and I have more information about Karl's sibs.

I also do not have the name of August's father, but I believe I am related. I am a descendent of Katie Eckhardt born in 1866. According to the 1880 Census, there is a Kate Eckhardt born in 1866 living in Cleveland who appears to be the sister of your August. My ancestor, Katie Eckhardt, was married in Cleveland in 1883 to John F. Weis. Do you think this is the same Kate Eckhardt?
