Regarding where Margaret's children were born, I dont know for sure. From census' it appears she and Hedgeman were in Franklin Co., Ky. for the 1820 census, then in Culpeper Co., Va. for 1830 and 1840. Since they were married in 1814 in Franklin Co., I would guess their first few children were born in Franklin CO. and the rest born in Culpeper Co. Son Harrison, born 1825, on the 1860 census of Peoria Co., Ill. said he was born in Va. I have seen that following Hedgeman's death (1845) Margaret lived with her son John in Missouri. I dont know if that is true or not. Bob Eddings.

Margaret Eddins was born 1791, probably in Culpeper Co., Va.to Joseph Eddins and Milly (maiden name unknown). She died 1846 in MO. (possibly Carroll Co.) Supposedly she and Hedgeman had 6-8 children, but the only ones I have seen were Harrison (born circa 1825), Thomas W. (b. 1828) and John (b. ca 1839). Hedgeman died 1845 (where?). Joseph Eddins and Milly had about 5-8 children, but the only one i know , besides Margaret, was her older brother Benjamin. Joseph's parents were Abraham Eddins and Catherine Towles. I am not related . Bob Eddings.

Rocky, R.H. Eddins was Riley Harrison (Harry) Eddins. In 1898 he and wife Amanda Anna Williams sold some property in Coffee Co., Ala. On the 1910 census Amanda indicated she was a widow, so "Harry" must have died during the period 1898-1910. Bob Eddings.

Hello Mr. Bob:

Here is some info I have developed concerning R. H. Eddins
of Wilcox Co., AL. I believe he was a brother to our James
Riley Eddins.

He was a member of Co. H, 17th AL Infantry during the war.

He was married in Wilcox Co. on 3 May 1866 to: A. A. Williams.

Info handed down to us shows that our Columbus Samuel Walker was married to Amelia Williams.

Columbus S. Walker md. Amelia A. Eddens on 12 Oct. 1871
in Wilcox Co. The Walkers lived around Pineapple in the
1870s.

I believe both were married to the same woman, but at
different times.

Amelia is buried in the Forest Home Cemetery in Butler Co.
Roster shows vitals as: 12 Jul. 1842 --- 22 Jan. 1896.

I thought R. H. was Rufus ?? Do you show "Riley" ??

Looks like R. H. Eddins passed on sometime prior to
12 Oct 1871.

I would be interested in your insight !

Regards ..................
Zilpha E. Eddins, dau of James A. Eddins & Nancy Ann Hendricks

My latest info on this Zilpha:

Zilpha E. (possibly Emily) Eddins was born between 1821 (1860 Census) and 1826 (Bob Eddings) in AL (1860 Census). Her parents were James A. Eddins, born bet. 1792 & 1793 in SC and Nancy Ann Hendricks/Hendrix, born bet. 1796 & 1800 in SC (various censii).

1850: I am not positive about this, but Zilpha may be the Emily Rope living with (step?) daughter Martha J. in the home of Daniel Beaver in Twp. 19, Tallapoosa County, AL. The ages are off, but Martha shows up again in 1860 with Zilpha.

I haven't quite puzzled out the changing ages and last names of (step?) children Martha J. and Francis M. yet.

1860: Zylpha E. Freema is living near the Realtown P.O., Western Division, Tallapoosa County, AL. She is 39, born AL, living in the household of Francis M. Freema (Freeman), 28, a mechanic, born Georgia, $300. Also in the household is Martha T., 23, Francis M., 21, a farmer, and William H, 19, all born AL. They are living next door to sister Ann Susannah Eddins Rice (Rix) and family. Up the street are relatives & neighbors Elijah Freeman & family, Peter Eddens with Henry J. Rise (Rix), Harrison, Echols, Martha (Helton) Freeman, Nancy Freeman, 70, Tabitha Baird, Susan Freeman, 70, with Joseph Davis, 17.

1870: Z. E. Freeman is living in Oak Bowery, Chambers County, AL. She is 45, female, keeping house, living in the household of F. M. Poke or Pope, a farmer, 25, $550, born AL. Also in the household are Ann Edwin, 20, born AL, at home; Martha Poke or Pope, 20, born AL, and Nancy Eddins, 70, at home, born AL.

1880: Z. A. Freeman is living in Opelika, Lee (says Chambers in the margin) County, AL. She is 50, born AL, parents born SC, has rheumatism, can read & write. Also in the household are M. J. Pope, 25, parents born SC., son F. M. Pope, 23, clerk in a junk shop, N. Edins, 84, widowed, born SC, parents born SC; SIL A. M. Edins, 30 or 38, sewing, born SC, father born SC, mother born KY; and Neil Gilmore, laborer & servant, born AL, parents born AL.

After 1880 I've not found anything about Zilpha. The Z. E. Cottingham in Bibb County is Zilpha Pratt, who married H. P. Cottingham.

Hope this helps somebody. Looking forward to hearing any comments!
Re: Louis Sterling Eddins

Nancy, after reviewing my notes on the William Joel Eddins and Hannah Austin family and several census', here is what I have come up with on your Louis Eddins (frequently called Lewis).

He was born 6/1840 in East Baton Rouge Parish, La. In 1850 the family lived in Franklin Parish. La. In 1865 Louis married Susan F. Hays in Carroll Parish, La. (I dont know if it was East or West Carroll). While in Carroll Parish they had the following children: John W. (born 1866); Lou ( 1867- this was a girl who apparently died before the 1880 census); Louiss Jr. (1868); Robert Spurlock (ca 11/1869); Joel (1872); and Fred H. (1873).

During the period 1873-1875 they moved to Leon Co., Texas and had more children: Mary (11875); Alonza Austin (3/1877); Josephine (7/1880); Ella (?) (2/1883); Martha Ida (9/1885); Lillie (9/1888); a son (name ?? - 1889); and Annie (9/1990).

On the 1900 census they lived in Wise Co., Tx. and indicated they had 16 children and 11 were still alive in 1900. My list only accounts for 13 children. I hope this helps answer some on your questions. Bob Eddings.

I am looking for a little information on a triple great grandfather and his family. I have been able to take his family back even further, but what I am looking for is direct siblings of his. His mother was Joel and Hanna Louis (Austin) Eddins. Their siblings are Louis Sterling (also known as L.S.), Josephine, Allen W., Laura, Alonzo and Dora. He had been married previously twice with 3 other children:Mary Jane, William Benjamen, and Kenneth. Any info about siblings or any family info would be greatly appreciated.

Eddins/Edins/ Rix/Helton

Hello there,

I have found five families who often travelled together and intermarried. They are Eddins, Heltons, Freemans, Pullens, and Rixes. Below is pertinent information for this forum. I have listed sources for the data when possible, but all data should be considered suspect unless you have proved it yourself. A question mark means that I have not proved the data but consider it probably true. I welcome corrections and additions.

Good hunting!

1 Edmund RIX OR RIES ?
—————————————————————————————————————————————

Spouse:	Jane MNU

Children:	Henry James (~1820-~1865)
Sarah (~1823-)
William ?

1.1 Henry James RIX
—————————————————————————————————————————————
Birth:	bet1820 & 1825, KY
Death:	abt 1865, AL

1. In the 1840 US Census for AL, H. J. Rix is living in an unnamed township in Tallapoosa County. In the household are one male 15 - 20 (Henry) and one female 15 - 20 (Ann Susannah). Neighbors include Rogers, Morris, Parker, R. Freeman, Price, McCulluoch, Smith, Martin, Moore, Kitchens, McLister. On the next page are P. R. Eddins, Coleman, Hightower, J. A. Eddings, Knight, and John Davis and S. Ward.

2. Haven't found them yet in 1850.

3. In the 1860 US Census for AL, Henry J. Rice is living in Realtown P.O., Western Division, Tallapoosa County, AL. He is 36, a farmer, born KY, $200, $300. Also in the household are Susan, 36, born AL, Zylpha, 16, Henry, 13, Mary B., 11, Nancy C., 8, Thomas E., 6, William T., 2, and Peter Eddens, 16 (A.S.'s nephew; also shows elsewhere. See below). All born AL. Next door is Edmon Rice, 67 (probably Henry’s father). Other neighbors: Freeman, McKissock, Sumers, Haywood, Evins, Strength, Wilkie, Harris, Williams.

4. Henry James died around 1865.

Spouse:	Ann Susannah EDDINS
Birth:	1823, AL?
Father:	James A (Allen? Aaron?) EDDINS (1792-1858)
Mother:	Nancy Ann HENDRICKS (~1796->1880)
Marr:	31 Oct 1839, Tallapoosa, AL

Children:	Louisa Zylpha ? (~1843-) (May be two separate people. Zylpha Eddins is A. S.'s grandmother)
Henry James (~1850-)
Mary Box (1852-) (No Eddins connection)
Nancy C. (~1854-) (After A. S.'s mother)
Simion Thomas ?? (~1858-) (May be two different people. Blakely has a son Simion) William T. (~1863-)
Alabama (~1865-) (Maybe Alabama Easter?)
Hiram Lewis Blakely (Hiram and Blakely are Eddins names)

1. Eddins, 8, and Peter R., 6. Peter Eddins, Sr. is not in household.

3. Looks like Sarah is a sister to Henry James Rix, who married Anne Susannah, Peter Eddins’s sister. This is just a guess, but they live next to each other in the 1840 US Census. And they live just a few doors from Roda Freeman, whose children married Heltons, Pullens, and Eddinses.

Spouse:	Peter R. In the 1860 US Census for AL Peter R. Eddings is listed in the household of James F. Eddings. He is 16, no job listed, born AL, has $100. Also in the household are Ann, 64, and Ann M. 17 (either James’s wife or sister). Next door are William Lovelady, 29, a farmer, and wife Elizabeth, 31, born SC.

3. Peter R.
Per the Social Security Death Index, your Margaret Eddins was born 12/14/1912 and died 4/1995 in Emory, Rains Co., Tex. Her Soc. Sec. Number was 450-10-5647. Husband Charles Barrow died 1/1982 also in Emory. For about $25 you can contact the Soc. Sec. Administration and request a copy of Margaret's original Soc. Sec. application. It should show her fathers name and her mother's maiden name, etc. If you find some info about her father (name, when born, where, etc. ) get back to me and possibly I can find more about the Eddins' ancestors.
Hi Rosemary- Thank you so much for answering my query.
Just about the time you sent it, I received a copy of the original
will for Abraham Edens from the SC St. library. They had it
on microfilm. Notice that the surname is spelled "Edens". The
names mentioned in the will proves that this is the same Ab-
raham whose name is mostly seen spelled "Eddins,Eddins"
and about 18 more ways!!
I checked with DA R -for the 3 above spellings of he sur-
name. Apparently no one has submitted this Patriot for
membership. I am working on it now - mostly for my dau Sara
It will be 8 supplementals for her that I have researched and
submitted. I give up getting them for myself!!! I should live
so long! The ones that currently came in took a little over
2 1/2 years!!! Thanks again-- Margaret Findley
mcfindley@centurytel.net

Margaret, there are several family trees posted on RootsWeb with most of this information on them. You might search for the trees and email the posters to see if they have sources for the information. Abraham died in Newberry County, SC, in 1801. There may be a will filed there. Try the SC Dept of Archives also. They have a Web site and many of their materials are on-line. Also, check the DAR site. Surely someone else has filed an application on Abraham. The DAR will copy previous applications for you and will accept them as a source for your application.

William Eddins m. Martha Yowell

Here is some information I have pieced together from looking at various censuses and GEDCOMS at Genforum and Ancestry. This is not my line and I have no more information than posted here.

The Smith-Mullen GEDCOM at Ancestry.com lists William Eddins m. Martha Yowell. The only listed offspring is Gabriel Eddings. However, Martha and William also had Ephrain C. Eddins of Franklin County, GA, and William Junior, listed as an idiot in the 1850 Census. Allen Yowell, Martha and William Eddins are living with Ephrian in Franklin County in 1850. Also the 1840 Census for Franklin County lists people who could correspond to Ephrain, William, and Martha.

I hope this helps some Yowells and the other branch of the Eddins family.

Engish Origin of Eddins/Eddings

Over the past few years at various places on the internet, there have been postings that purport to trace the origin of the Eddings/Eddins in America to the Edens/Eden line in Durham County, England. There has been a notable lack of documentary evidence to support this assertion. I have recently completed some research into the records of Durham County that casts considerable doubt on that assertion. I have a short paper on the subject (in Word format) that I would be happy to send along to anyone who is interested, especially anyone who might wish to comment, refute or add to what I have written. I also have a second short paper that looks at surname analysis to suggest an alternative origin in England, further south. I would also be happy to send this along to any interested parties, especially anyone who would care to comment, correct or add to the subject.

The information below plus much more is included. Let me know if you might be interested in receiving a copy.
Children of James Lloyd EDDINS and Nettie TEAL:
1.
Donna-
Actually, believe it or not, I do not have very much information on my TEAL line. We do not have much at the Chesterfield Genealogical Research Library on TEAL either. Our main source for TEAL information and one of the organizers of the SCGS, Chesterfield District Chapter was Naomi TEAL CAMPBELL. Naomi passed away in June 1999 before donating any of her TEAL information and we have not heard anything from her family about any of this information. She was also a member of the Anson County Genealogical Society, so maybe they donated it to them. We would appreciate any TEAL information that you could offer us and as I mentioned to you before, this information is only kept on file at our research library. It is never placed online.

Do you know anything about Catherine Eddins (Eddings).

Her father, Benjamin (b. between 1780-1790) moved from Alabama to Woodford County, KY. (but I believe his family was from colonial Virginia)

Catherine Eddin (Eddings) married William Usselton Lyons on 29 DEC 1829 in Woodford County, KY. I have four children and more details about them.

What I am interested to learn about is her father, Benjamin (and possibly who her mother was)

Thanks,
DeeDee

Hi Judy,

I am seeking information on an Elizabeth Walker b abt 1794 and married William S. Thornton 1812 abt. They were both born in Edgefield and lived in Abbeville/Edgefield area and had three girls and three boys. I have found a marriage record for them, but I am seeking additional documentation to further prove the "S" in William's middle name, and perhaps provide a directional link to prove his father. There have been some researchers indicating he married a Stallsworth. We do not agree with that and believe the S comes from either William's father's name or perhaps Elizabeth's. Your help will be appreciated.

Thank you,
Ray

I think you may be looking at two different people. I have often found nineteenth-century male cousins with the same name. It makes the research that much more difficult.

One Jesse Shivers Eddins earned a B.P. (scientific) degree from Baylor University, Independence, Texas, in 1860. He served in the Civil War and lived in various places in Texas according to his fraternity catalogues of membership. The 1900 census shows Jesse S Eddins as a physician in Kerr County, Texas, born April 1839. He was born in Alabama, his mother in Alabama and his father in South Carolina.

Towner Blackstock
Curator of Archives
The Fraternity of Phi Gamma Delta
www.phigam.org/history

Re: Jesse Shivers (Briley) Eddins

Deed records of Martin Co., NC contain a deed which mentions Jesse Briley (died before March 1854) had daughter N.E. Briley (I believe to be Nancy Elizabeth from other research). She was married to J.B.F. Shivers at time of Deed (March 18, 1854. Her mother is mentioned to be Drupina Briley "now Drupina Bledson, my wife-- A.D.Bledson". This was from a series of Powers of Attorney for people then living in Shelby, Tennessee and heirs of Arden Andrews. I wonder if this could tie into your Jesse. I'm searching for parents of James Henry Briley, whose wife's (Mary Elizabeth Jenkins) mother may be a Shivers. (They were of NC) I hope this is helpful to someone, somewhere. If so, contact me and I can give you more accurate source information.

Re: Abraham Eddins/Eddings

Margaret, In looking at my old notes I have found a part of a document (phamphlet?) titled " The Chandler Family, prepared by Howard Sonney Chandler, 26 Jun 1992". In case you dont remember, Abraham's son William (1758-1841) married Rebecca Chandler.

The writing says " Abraham Eddins, born 1 Jun 1724 in Orange Co., Va. and died 30 Nov 1801 in Newberry Co., S.C." This entry has a "6" by it, apparently indicating the source.

This writeup has a small error in it. Abraham was born in Spotsylvania Co., Va. because Orange Co. wasnot formed until 1734, 10 years after Abraham was born.

I dont know where I got this writeup, but it was sent to me about 10 years ago. Without knowing where to look for a copy of this writeup, which apparently shows the sources of the info, my best guess would be to contact the public library in Lebanon, Wilson Co., Tenn., where many of these Eddins lived. I understood (years ago) there were several documents on the Eddins Family at that library.

Good Luck. Bob.
