[. . .]
Mayor K--singer has received a communication from Mrs. Alice Moore of Millsboro, Pa. asking for assistance from his old friends for the return to this country of Civil War veteran, Charles N. Eddy, now in Ladybrand, South Africa. He joined his regiment in Rome, Company C. Fiftieth New York Volunteer Engineers, under Col. William H. R. Pet--- [William H. Pettesj] of Buffalo. He is now 78 years old, and is eking out a miserable existence at the Victoria Hotel in Ladybrand, where parties are willing to donate $50 [or $60] to send him back home in order that he may be placed in the Soldiers' Home. Wallace Marriott? says he remembered Mr. Eddy, and that he was a cooper and had a shop at the corner of Dominick and Madison streets, where Foley's store is now located.
