Blanche Edelen from Piscatawy Maryland

We are looking for any information regarding Blanche Edelen from Prince Georges Maryland. Her father was Joseph Benedict Edelen and mother Clara Edelen. She was born circa 1857. We have reason to believe that she married one William Naylor and lived in Washington DC at the time her children were born. They had two children - Ralph Naylor and Joseph Edelen Naylor. Joseph was born around 1892. We cannot find any information regarding their marriage or their deaths. Any help or suggestions would be very much appreciated. We know for a fact that Joseph Edelen's mother's name was Blanche Edelen from his church marriage record. What we are trying to prove is that this Blanche Edelen is indeed the daughter of Joseph Benedict Edelen.

Audrey,
I can't find which branch of Edelen's my gr grandmother was born into. Her maiden name was Ellen Edelen, b 3/1882 if census and marriage license info is correct. However, I haven't been able to link her to ANY other Edelens. I have no sibling or parent names. Can you link an Ellen (or maybe middle name Ellen??) in any of your research? I'd love to help you research the line if they are my branch of this tree!
Ellen named her daughters Clara, Elsie, and Mildred, so I'm guessing there might be a mother, sister or aunt with one of those names.
Good luck!
Mary

David,
You've got SO much. I'm currently stuck trying to find anything about my gr grandmother, Ellen Edelin or Edelen. I can only find traces of her in census records with her married name - but no record of her anywhere with the maiden name Edelin. We were always told her maiden name was Edelin, and that she was related to the Edelins who ran/owned tobacco auctions in Upper Marlboro, MD. That's Prince George's county and it borders Charles county. I find her in the 1900 census, age 18, married to Daniel Walker and living in Anne Arundel county (near both charles and pr georges). Then she's there again in 1910 and that's ALL I can find about her. Do you happen to have any records of an Ellen in your research? She would have been born around 1882. I would really appreciate any help or advice.
Mary Maxson

When was your Peter Cornelius Edelen, Sr. born? I am asking because my gggrandfather was Benedict Joseph Edelen born June 22, 1835 in KY. And his parents were Edward and Susana Jarboe. I've just (with help from another Edelen researcher) found this info. My Benedict Joseph had a brother Peter Cornelius born April 17, 1840, along with several siblings James, John, Mary Ann, Menorica, Susan & Margaret. If this is another family, please disreguard.

Re: Cass County Missouri Edelen's

from "History of Cass County Missouri":
H. B. Edelen was 12 years old when he came to Cass County with his parents and thus received his education in the public schools in his native state and Cass County. He remained on the home farm with his father until he was 25 years of age, when he engaged in farming and stock raising on his own account and since that time has resided on "Fair View Stock Farm" which he now owns, with the exception of four years. This is one of the fine farms of Cass County and contains 204 acres. Mr. Edelen carries on general farming and stock raising and specializes in registered Shorthorn cattle, saddle horses and registered jacks and jennettes, and is without a doubt the most successful breeder of highclass registered jacks in Cass County. He has justly won a reputation of producing some of the best pedigreed horses in this state, for which he has generally found a ready market at profitable prices. He is also well known as a successful raiser of Duroe Jersey hogs, usually marketing about two carloads each year. For a number of years he was extensively engaged in feeding and shipping stock, but in recent years has not given that industry so much attention.

Mr. Edelen was united in marriage Dec. 11, 1889, at Pleasant Hill, MO, with Miss Anna I. Brown, a native of Boyle county, born Jan. 30, 1865. She is the daughter of Stephen E. and Margaret (Meyer) Brown, natives of KY, the former of Washington Co., and the latter of Boyle County. The father was born Oct. 9, 1833 and died Aug. 19, 1915, and the mother was born April 25, 1841, and died Feb 10, 1910. Her materal grandfather, David Ansel Meyer, was a native of N Carolina and came to KY when nineteen years settling in Boyle County, where he spent the remainder of his life. Mr. Edelen came to Cass County with her parents, reaching Pleasant Hills Dec 24, 1879, and the parents spent the remainder of their time in that locality. They had five children, as follows: Anna I., the wife of H. B. Edelen, the subject of this sketch; Mrs. Ardie Smith, Nespel Washington; Edward Ansel, banker, Crawford, Colorado; Mrs. Eleanor Schieser, Greenville, California; and William Cecil, Denver, Colorado.

To H. B. Edelen and wife have been born the following children: Brown Y., married Eugenia Youmans, and resides in Peculiar township; Margaret, married Burford Harris, Harrisonville, MO; Ansel, deceased, and Mary Evelyn, a student.

Mr. Edelen is a Democrat and has always taken a commendable interest in politics and has held local offices of trust and responsibility and has been solicited to become a candidate for county office, but so has declined. He is a stockholder and director of the Farmers National Bank of Pleasant Hill and was one of the organizers of that well known and substantial financial institution, and has served on the board of directors since its organization. He is a member of the time honored Masonic lodge and also holds membershipo in the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. He and Mrs. Edelen are members of the Presbyterian church. The members of the Edelen family rank among the representative people of Cass County, and Mr. Edelen is one of our most substantial citizens.
========================

Re: Pronunciation

Hello,
I grew up with my family pronouncing it EE-de-len, using a long-E and pronouncing all three syllables. My dad, uncle, and grandparents, all from Charles/Pr. Georges Counties, Md., and very well educated who all spoke with impecable articulation and grammer, etc. (grandmother retired as an editor from the Smithsonian Inst) all said that is how the name Edelen is properly pronounced. They used to say that it was simple English grammar if nothing else; a vowel followed by a consonant followed by another vowel makes the first one a long vowel.

But anyway, as you said, many people who see my name want to say Ehdelen, using a short-E. Sometimes I go along with this because I get tired of correcting people. My father in his last years would say it that way on the phone just to keep from explaining or correcting operators, info people, etc.. But my dad moved to Alabama with my mom after WWII and I grew up there. So sometimes when I speak my Southern English in a quick way I say Edlen and sort of skip the 2nd syllable. That is probably common with such a name and is undoubtedly how some got to spelling it as "Edlen" (saw several in a Clarksville, Tennessee phone book).
Later my distant kindred,
David Middleton Edelen II
But then again, if it is indeed a German name as I was always told, then it would be properly (in German) pronounced with that first "E" pronounced as an English long-A as in "Day". The word "Edel" in German means "Noble" and the "en" on the end of many German words oft times denotes a plural of that word. So I reckon our name means "Nobles".

Hello,
I am interested in anything pertaining to our family. Please let me know what you have about that because I have heard or read of several scenarious as to who we (Edelens) are, where and from whom we come from and I don't know what to believe anymore. I have read that we are of Celtic stock from Brittany on the coast of France. I have heard we are of German/Nordic origins, I have heard we are Normans who came with Wm. the Conqueror, I have heard we descended from the bastard son or grandchild of Charlemagne (from one of Charlemagne's concubines no less). So I don't know what to believe anymore.
Thanks,
David Middleton Edelen II

George Edelen (d.1810) of KY & George Stonestreet Edelen of MD ~ Two Distinct Individuals

Unfortunately for Edelen family researchers we have now lost two individuals responsible for much original information on the family and also for correcting some of the very few errors that crept into Harry Wright Newman's Charles County Gentry. Charmaine Goemmer Welker (1952-2003) and Crolian William Edelen (1920-2006) were both instrumental in helping me decipher my lineage as early as 1987. Crolian and I remained correspondents until his recent passing, and he was also my sponsor in 2005 who aided me in becoming a member of The National Society of Descendants of Lords of the Maryland Manors. Noted genealogist John Frederick Dorman was the official who approved my documentation for acceptance in the organization.

I have two lines of descent from the Edelen family, being descended from George Edelen (1763-1810) and his wife Sarah nee Edelen (1763-1848), early residents of the Catholic settlement on Cartwrights Creek in Washington County, Kentucky. George's identity still seems to be a topic of debate to some who keep trying to make one individual out of two distinct men, both of whom seem to have an origin in Prince George's County.

Here is how I see these two George Edelens:

George Stonestreet Edelen
~born 1760, son of Richard Edelen (1715-1791), Gent., of "Dublin" (in Lower Piscataway Hundred), Prince George's County, by his wife Sarah Stonestreet.
~enumerated in the 1790 census in Prince George's County with one free white female (likely one of his spinster sisters) and six slaves.
~married 31 Dec. 1790 in Prince George's County to Rebecca Boarman.
[George was a legatee in his father's 1791 will; he and his wife were legatees in his bachelor brother Electius Edelen's 1808 will; and as "George S. Edelen" was a legatee in his spinster sister Frances Edelen's 1825 will.]

George Edelen
~born 1763, son of Charles Edelen (1727-1790) of "Apple Door" (in Lower Piscatway Hundred), Prince George's County, by his wife Catherine.
~married 14 Aug. 1785 in Charles County to Sarah Edelen (1763-1848), daughter of Edward Edelen (d. 1780), Gent., of "Assington" (in Newport Hundred), Charles County, by his wife Susanna Wathen.
~enumerated in the 1790 census in Washington County, Maryland with one free white male under sixteen, three free white females, and five slaves. Wife Sarah (born 1763), son Robert (born ca. 1786), daughter Alice (born ca. 1789), and daughter Priscilla (born ca. 1789) would account for the individuals enumerated with him.
~by 1794 he and his brother-in-law Edward Clarkson, who married Lucy Edelen (d. 1843) on 19 Jul. 1792 in Prince George's County, had settled in the Catholic settlement on Cartwrights Creek in Washington County, Kentucky. His brother Samuel Edelen of Charles (1760-1835), along with Samuel's wife Mary Smith who he had married in Prince George's County on 14 Dec. 1787, were living in the same settlement by 1798.
~died intestate shortly before 20 Jul. 1848, having served in his lifetime as county commissioner, justice of the peace, and captain on militia for Washington County, Kentucky.

My line of descent from George (1763-1810) and Sarah (1763-1848) is through their daughter Louisa Edelen (born 2 May 1794 Cartwrights Creek, Washington County, Kentucky - died 29 Apr. 1877 Big Spring Precinct, Meade County, Kentucky) who married John Abraham Rhodes (1794-1861) on 13 Oct. 1817 at the Church of St. Rose of Lima at the Dominican Priory near Springfield, Washington County, Kentucky.

Todd Allan Whitesides
Covington, Kentucky

I am not descended from any Francis Edelens, although I have seen the name in some info I read in a book called Charles County Gentry. It had a whole extensive section on the Edelen family.
Dave

Hi David,

Thanks for replying. From what set of Edelen's did your Mom descend? Is she related to a Francis Edelen whose daughter Annie married a Richard Willett. I am looking for descendents of Francis Edelen's family. He would have been born abt. mid to late 1800s.

Thanks for any and all help! Wanda

Hello,
My Edelen line settled in and around Piscataway, Pr. Georges County, Md., althogh I am definately related to those Charles County Edelens. I remember my grandmother Edelen, who was a Charles County Berry, talking of a Tip Edelen that had been engaged to an aunt of hers. He was in the Confederate Army and was killed. I was riding through there one day in Charles County and the old guy pointed at a lake or pond and said, "That is Tip Edelen's old Ice Pond". Tip's family had owned a big farm I think there.

I wish I could tell you more but my dad met my mom in WWII and moved to Alabama with her where I was reared. So I know little about the Edelens and even fewer relatives. But from what I understand and been told the Edelens, Middletons, and Berrys owned a lot of Charles and Pr. Georges counties at one time.
Take care,
David Middleton Edelen II
Millbrook, Al.

I have found some interesting unknown facts about the Edelen's origins in the East End of London, and the fact that the family tradition that we are decended from a Lord or Lady is in fact untrue. Is anyone interested in this?
