Found this while doing old newspaper research for myself.

Willie Edes, the only son of Thomas Edes, formerly of this county, but now residing near Wellington, Kansas, was killed by lightning, on Wednesday of last week. It seems that he had been to one of the neighbors, returning a wagon he had borrowed, and was returning home riding one mule and leading another, when lightning struck him, instantly killing him and both of the mules. He is said to have been about 19 years old, and a young man who was possecessed of excellent habits. #
