PARENTAGE OF JESSE W. EDGE
It is with reasonable certainty that Jesse W. Edge born 15 July 1822 is the son of William “Billy” Edge b. 1800 in Hancock Co. GA. and Lieutisia Cadenhead b. 1801 in Oglethorpe Co., GA. Lieutisia and William “Billy” Edge’s children are Jesse W., Mary Jane, Eli, Levi, Martha and William J. Edge. In 1854 when William “Billy” Edge died, Jesse was named as an heir. When Levi Edge petitioned the court to sell his father, William Edge’s estate Jesse Edge was listed as an heir. Cary O. Edge (great-grandson of William “Billy” Edge) states in a letter written February 26, 1986 to James Oren Edge (great-grandson of Jesse W. Edge) “My grandfather Eli Edge, a son of William, had a brother Jesse living in Wilcox Co. AL in 1870 when William’s estate was administered.”
Most Edge researchers will agree that William “Billy” Edge had a son named Jesse, born before Levi and Eli b. 1825. Jesse W. Edge’s birth date fits and is inscribed on his tombstone under the name J. W. Edge. Jesse W. Edge’s Civil war papers also has his name as J. W. Edge. The DNA results of a living great-great-grandson of Jesse W. Edge proves that he is definitely, without a doubt, connected to proven brothers Jeremiah and Nehemiah Edge. William “Billy” Edge is the proven s/o Jeremiah Edge.
It is well documented that Jeremiah Edge’s widow Catherine "Katy" (Laws) Edge remarried to Rev. James Cadenhead the grandfather of Lieutisia (Cadenhead) Edge. William “Billy” Edge’s brother, Jesse L. Edge married Eliza Cadenhead a cousin to Lieutisia. In 1833 Barbour Co., AL, joint owners William “Billy” Edge, and William Boles conveyed property call Griggs Mill to Robert Hobdy. Transaction papers are attested to by Lieutisia Edge, William Edge, William Boles and Robert Hobdy. William Boles married Rebecca Cadenhead, sister of Lieutisia.
Naming patterns for Jeremiah Edges’ descendants provide strong circumstantial evidence that connects William “Billy” Edge and Jeremiah Edge (1749) as father and son. Jeremiah Edge was the first Edge to use the names “Jesse” and “Wesley” for his children: Jesse L. 1806 and John Wesley 1808. Jeremiah’s son William “Billy” Edge named a son Jesse W. and his middle initial may stand for Wesley. It seems Jesse W. (Wesley) Edge was named after his two uncles. Jeremiah Edge’s brother Nehemiah Edge had a great-grandson named John Wesley; however that is the only “Wesley” in that branch at this time and there are no “Jesses” in Nehemiah's family at this time, concluding that Jesse W. Edge is from the line of Jeremiah Edge and not Nehemiah Edge.
J. W. Edge, O. (Obediah) Edge, and William Edge were listed on the 1860 Snow Hill Beat, Wilcox Co. AL Presidential Election Voter list. This is undoubtedly Jesse W. Edge, his brother William J. Edge and their Uncle Obadiah Edge, as they were all in Wilcox Co. AL at this time.
Jesse W. Edge is clearly listed by this name on the Civil War papers of William Edge in 1863. Jesse W. Edge was the administrator of William Edge’s estate and filed a surety bond; his surety was Obadiah Edge their Uncle. William Edge’s Civil War papers are the first documents with the name Jesse W. Edge written. This is the “smoking gun proof” and a strong presumption that Jesse W. Edge is the brother of William (J.) Edge and they are the sons of William "Billy" Edge. Jesse W. Edge’s proven son Daniel Webster Edge was on the 1880 Snow Hill Wilcox Co. AL census. Living with Daniel age 31 was Obadiah Edge age 79 listed as Uncle. Obadiah Edge was the Uncle of Jesse W. Edge and great-uncle of Daniel Edge.
Other supporting evidence that Jesse W. Edge is the s/o William “Billy” Edge and the grandson of Jeremiah Edge is an April 1935, Edge Family Record by Mr. & Mrs. M. W. Hook written by Minnie Laura Edge Hook (granddaughter of Eli Edge) which includes the offspring of William (Billy) Edge and his sister Mary Edge Horton. “In comparing Mary Ellen Wexler’s branch with information in this paper it ties in with our branch of the Edge Family.” In addition to that, Lurline Schrieber Hall (wife of Charles Winifred Hall the great-grandson of Jesse W. Edge) said Oscar Nelson Edge (grandson of Levi Edge) attended one of their Edge Reunions and Dora Nell Kelley Tatum great-granddaughter of Jesse W. Edge said we were related to Oscar Nelson Edge M.D. of Troy Alabama.
