This may help with your research: I found the following today on a real estate site. It suggests that a member of Mount Edgcumbe family built the plantation in the 1700s.
Mount Edgecombe Plantation, Grenada, West Indies:

Mount Edgecombe Plantation provides a yesteryear experience ...Built by Lord Edgecombe of Devon, England in the late 1700’s, in a picturesque, sheltered yet elevated location on the western coast of Grenada this historic and colorful estate enjoys cool sea breezes, overlooks verdant botanical gardens and orchards to the sparkling waters of the Caribbean below.
I am looking for any information about Henry Edgecombe and his wife Eliza Payne coming to Australia by 1867 (from England). A daughter Harriet Edgecombe married a Frederick Sydney Swift and they lived at Port Elliot in South Australia. Any help with this family would be greatly appreciated & we could share some information.
Regards, Pam Skurray

Re: i know nothing and i want to learn

You can do what we all do - start with what you know. If you don't have your own birth certificate, get a copy. Then get your parents' certificates. They will tell you about the next generation back.

Look around to see if there's a genealogy or family history group near you that you can join; the people there will help you too.

Family Search (http://www.familysearch.org/) has information on its site about how to get started, including video classes that you can watch. And/or you could go to your local library and see what books they have on the topic.

It can take time and persistence to get the information you seek, so don't give up at the first hurdle. My grandfather was abandoned not long after he was born, and his mother lied to the authorities when she registered his birth. My aunt spent years trying to find the people named on his birth certificate, who didn't exist. But now we've found out who they are, and even met my grandfather's half-brother who is now in his 90s. Never say never!

Do post to the board again when you find out more about your EDGECOMBE people - others may recognise your names and have information to share or be able to help you find out more. When you have other names move to a board or mailing list that is appropriate for those names, or the area they lived, to ask questions about them. There are lots of helpful people out there just waiting to assist you. :-)

Kind Regards,
Wendy Howard
EDGECOMBE Board Admin

My father's name was Lawrence Henry Edgecombe[coincidental how those names reappear]. Lawrence was born 10/27/1922 in Simms, Long Island Bahamas and dies 4/10/2001 in Cocoa, Florida. He married Roslyn Bethel who is stil alive and well. I know there a lot of years in between but I'm intrested in your search.

Hi Paul: The information you provided is interesting. However, I am trying to fit this family name with our family. I recently found out that our family USA (Edgecomb) decended from the UK Edgcumbe's, decendants of, Jesse George Edgcomb, his father Phineas, and Phinea's father or grandfather Uriah back to the 1700's. Do you have info there. We have some information, very sketchy, bits and pieces going back to SIr Richard Edgcumbe, but we don't really understand your line of tiles there. Thanks for any info: my e-mail is builder@voyager.net so that you may e-mail me directly. Thank you.

Kay

Thank you for sharing information concerning the Edgecumbes of England. I am still searching documents looking for the definitive connection (other than the oral history) to my English ancestors. I have some old documents of my grandmother's, presumably from Burke's Peerage, with the coat of arms and direct descendants down to a Piers Edgcombe but little information on collateral lines. I have even considered engaging a genealogist in England. Oh, well...

The American branch of Edgecombes, particularly those in Louisiana, have been well documented. There is even an Edgecombes Heirs Society.

It has been a pleasure to correspond with you, especially given the close expectations of circumstances.

N Mann

N.Mann
Well it does look like the Edgecumbe's of England left to go to USA as well as New Zealand and the spelling changed some where on the way.
The family estate is situated in cornwall and I believe the estate was the provider of much oak wood for the navy and that Drakes amarder was mostly made from the estate wood.
An early etching of the land shows a mass of oak trees and a later (100 + yrs) picture shows a mature forest of pines.
I forgot in the last letter to say that the Mountain in New Zealand is names after the England Edgecumbe.
I have heard of the cotley house and I think it is on the estate in england and is open to the public and tourists
I will try to get the book I had back from my brother some time and get some ore interesting bits from it.
reguards
Kay Edgecumbe

Edgecombe

To Kay Edgecumbe
My paternal grandmother's mother was Josephine Elena Edgecombe, her father was Leonard Edgecombe, her grandfather was Charles Henry (Harry) Edgecombe and there my direct line falters. Other given names in this line include: Aaron Augustus, Mary Elizabeth (Eliza), Julia, Ellen, William and Robert; various brothers and sisters of the above. I know our first Edgecombe came from England to Louisiana around 1830's. I have also seen our Edgecombe name spelled Edgecumbe on some of old documents. They owned very large plantations during our antebellum period in an area just south of New Orleans called English Turn. I have an old hand tooled leather and lock hinged family bible that came from London. The earliest entry is the first known marriage in America in our known line dated 1832 (Julia Cornelia Browne and Leonard Edgecombe). I was told this bible was a wedding gift from the Edgecombes in England to that couple by my grandmother. She once said her grandfather was "a second son of a second son". I also know she communicated with a great uncle she called Lord John.

You may be interested to know that our Charles Henry Edgecombe married Delia Mason, the daughter of William (Asa) Mason a prominent land surveyor who received many landgrants from US President Zachary Taylor.
His father was Charles Mason, surveyor of our famed Mason and Dixon Line.

In short, my connections would go 6 or 7 generations back, if there is, indeed, a connection to your line. Thus, if you know of any of these early records I would be interested in them. My grandmother would speak of the Earl of Mount Edgecombe and Cotely (spelling???)House (that is what it sounds like to my recollections). Is that the same Earl you mentioned? If so, I did not realize there was a present day Earl.

Thank you for your kind reply. If any of this sounds familiar or if early Edgecombe documents are available I would appreciate further communique.

Kindest regards,
Lare
To N Mann.
I am related to the present earl of Edgecumbe but at least 5 generations or more ago
I became very interested when I saw a photo of an oil painting from 16th century or
there abouts and and marvelled that it looked just like my daughter and then noticed that
they shared both 1st and 2nd names.
I am a 4th generation Edgecumbe and live in New Zealand and the mountain in
the bay of plenty of the North Island of New Zealand was used as a central survey point
by my great grand father(Francis Henery) when doing the initial survey of New Zealand.
My grand father (Henery Francis)was also an early pioneer surveyer.and My Father
(Lewis Francis)was a surveyer and engineer.
I kept the family name Francis and the Kay was also a family name so what was a
masculin name 60 years ago is no longer the fashion.
So thats the vry brief story of the Edgecumbes of my line.
The present Earl of Edgecumbe was a farmer in New Zealand
and when the last Earl Died he whent to England to inherit
the Estate but the local taxes and upkeep meant that the estate
is now a local body responsibility.
reguards Kay Edgecumbe

I originate from Devon and my Grandfather Arthur Edgecombe was the bastard son of the Earl of Mount Edgecombe.
The current Earl, who was traced to New Zealand, I understand has renounced the title and lawyers are searching for the rightful heir. It is possible that the line of succession will switch to Virginia where various members of the Edgecombe family emigated in the 16th and 17th century.
Anyone interested in becoming the Earl of Mount Edgecombe - no lands but I think you will be about 75th in line to the throne !
No chance for me as my association was more carnal than legal.

West Indies Edgecombe's

Your message startled my wife! I am in California, as are my parents, and my son is in North Carolina. I have no particular knowledge about west indies Edgecombes, however I do remember a bit of notoriety.

When I was in the US Navy in 1963-64, my shipmates teased me about my fameous girl friend. Of course, only the name was the same, but they had their fun at my expense. This was during the John Perfumo defense scandal in Britain. Mandy Rice Davies and Kristine Keeler had what was considered an inappropriate relationship with the defense minister, and They came under scrutany. They were found by the press on vacation in the west indies in the company of a black man named John Edgecombe. A photo was published in most of the world newspapers at that time.

The only other Edgecombe I remember in the news was the captain of the steamship Oriana, when it was stuck in the Suez Canal during the 1956 crisis.

Although Edgecombes have been in America since before the revolutionary war, the name is still relatively rare.
