I will try to get some scans of the lists of names, and will send you a copy. I do not know how I am related to the Edget's, but believe it is thorough the maternal side, since I've got all the men pretty much accounted for. The earliest name listed in the bible is Lucinda Mernerva Williard, Born September 19, 1641. There are also quite a few Wells, Phelps, and Yarger's listed. I know how I am connected to the Yarger's but the others I do not know.

I very well think this could be the same Orrin and Stephen. I also had Stephen's birthday as June 10, 1811.

I would be very interested in more information from this bible since I seem to have hit a dead end in most of my searches.

Do you happen to know if Stephen had any siblings or what his mother's name was?

I suspect we are probably cousins if you are also related to Orrin. He is my 5th great grandfather through my mother's side and can be seen in one of my public trees. I have done an ancestry DNA test. Have you also submitted DNA?

Here is how I am related:

Orrin is the father of Stephen (b. 1811). Stephen married Mary Olive Geer (b. 1819).

Stephen and Mary had a daughter Emma (b. 1860). Emma married John Lowe (b. 1842).

Emma and John had a daughter Alice (b. 1879). Alice married Everett Millard ( b. 1867).

Alice and Everett had a daughter Muriel Eugenia (b. 1897). Muriel married Howard Alison Burrows (b. 1896).

Howard and Muriel are the parents of my maternal grandmother who was born in 1926.

How are you related to the Edgett line?

I suspect there are multiple spellings of the name Edgett which makes our search a little difficult. I have heard one of the previous versions of the name may be Adsit. To me Edgett sounds like a French name so I suspect earlier ancestors might have been in the Quebec region of Canada, but I have yet to prove this.

I have a family bible from 1813 that was owned by Elyina Edget until 1847. In the bible is a listing of family members, starting with Orrin Edget, born April 13, 1790. I believe this is the same person because it also lists a Stephen Edget Born June 10, 1811. I recently found the bible, but have never heard the Edget name before. I would be very interested in figuring how we are related. The owners of the book are listed as Betsey Wells, Elyina Edget, Helen Willard, Susie Yarger. My tree can be traced back to Helenn Willard of Monroe County Michigan

I'm looking for information on Oron (possibly spelled Orin) Edgett. I have no information about his parents or wife but I believe he had a son named Stephen.

Stephen Edgett was born in Cayuga, NY in 1811 and died in titusville, PA in 1880. He married Mary Olive Geer (1819-1902) and had 9 children.

Re: Getting to the Truth Regarding John Adsit Sr. of Lyme - father of George Edgett of Block Island?

Hello Jan,

I've just started working on the Edgett family who left New England for Canada as what we call United Empire Loyalists after the American Revolution. These Edgetts appear to have migrated from Westchester Co. NY to Westmorland and Albert counties in New Brunswick c1783 and are reputed to be sons or grandsons of George Edgett of Hartford Conn.
My public tree on Ancestry is thomassoncanada and the most recent Edgett is Jerusha Edgett wife of James Magee. I'm looking for sources as many of the trees on Ancestry are completely unsourced and I know there are errors that I'm trying to eliminate. Please contact me directly at vonnamcdonald@hotmail.com
Getting to the Truth Regarding John Adsit Sr. of Lyme - father of George Edgett of Block Island?

Did John Adsit, Sr. of Lyme have three wives? Was Sarah Howard the mother of his son, George? There is considerable confusion, so perhaps the information provided here helps the discussion. I worked backward in time, so you may wish to print this and then read it in reverse order. I welcome a spirited discussion, but PLEASE cite sources other than Newman Ward Adsit. God love him, but the man was human and made mistakes – as I certainly have and do:

1. [1793] Benjamin Adsit (son of John & Mary Adsit of Lyme, CT; b. 1728) died Jul 1793 in Washington Township, Dutchess County, NY. His last will (8 Apr 1793) mentions his “wife Rhody” as well as his brothers, George and Samuel. (SOURCE: Doherty, Frank J., The Settlers of Beekman Patent, Dutchess Co., NY, A Historical and Genealogical Study of all the 18th Century Settlers in the Patent; Pleasant Valley, NY; 1999.)

[Some researchers believe that the “George Ageet” of the last will of John Ageet, Sr. (1734/35) was a brother of John Adsit, Sr. But Benjamin’s last will indicates that George was John Adsit Sr.’s son. The question is: Who was George’s mother?]

2. [1734/35] The last will of John Ageet, Senr. of Lyme, New London, CT, was dated 15 Jan 1734/35. He stated: “I have given or paid portions to ye children I had by my former wife already yet nevertheless my mind and meaning is that my sd son John pay unto George Ageet five shillings when he sd John come of age. (SOURCE: Adsit, Newman Ward; Descendants of John Adsit of Lyme, Connecticut; published ca. 1959; pp. 1-3.)

[George’s name appears near the end of the will, in the section reserved for John’s former wife. The sections above it are very clear. They name John’s six children by his late wife, Mary – including John, Sarah, Samuel, Mary, Benjamin, and Stephen. From his father’s will, son George was not Mary’s child. George must have been born to a previous wife of John Adsit, Sr.]

3. [1732] Lyme Death Records show “Mary Adsit aged 42 years” died 7 Mar 1732. Also “John Adsit aged ca 80 yrs” died 16 Jan 1734/35. (SOURCE: Ely, Susan Hollingsworth & Parsons, Margaret Wellington; History of the First Congregational Church of Old Lyme, Connecticut: 1665-1993; Church Records; Deaths: An Accounting of All Ye Deaths in Ye First Society at Lyme; 1995; page 305.)

[John died in 1734/35 around the age of 80, according to Lyme church records, so he was nearly twice the age of his late wife, Mary. So, he fathered children (son Stephen was b. 20 Aug 1730) well into his ‘70s…certainly possible. This Lyme record means that John Adsit, Sr. was born circa 1655 – disputing Newman Ward Adsit, who claimed John Adsit, Sr. was born circa 1680. Unfortunately, this 1680 date has been copied without question by many genealogists.]

4. [1717-1730] Lyme Birth Records contains "the birth[s] of the children of John Agect [sic: Ageet] alias Adsot or Adsit: Sarah (10 Aug 1717), Samuel (30 Oct 1719), Mary (28 Aug 1723), Benjamin, (26 Oct 1728) and Stephen Ageet (20 Aug 1730)]; extracted from Lyme Land Records of Jan 28, 1733; LLR2: 180," (SOURCE: Vital Records of Lyme, Connecticut to the End of the Year 1850; Transcribed under the direction of Verne M. Hall and Elizebeth B. Plimpton; Published by the American Revolution Bicentennial Commission of Lyme, CT, 1776; Heritage Books, Inc; Bowie, MD; 1990; page 217.)

[These are the documented children of John & Mary Adsit – their eldest son, John, is presumed to have been born circa 1714. But his birth is not listed in the Lyme records, so he might have been born elsewhere (perhaps Block Island, Rhode Island?) or else his birth was lost or not recorded at Lyme. Also, there is no record of the birth of George in Lyme, so he may have been born elsewhere or else his birth was not recorded at Lyme. Again, he might have been born on Block Island, Rhode Island. There are many who call him George Edgett, born circa 1708 on Block Island and the husband of Ann Avery. Given the variant spellings of “Adsit” – from Ageet to Edgett to Hatchett, etc. – he well could be.]

5. [1712/13] John Adjett, “‘formerly of Hartford, late of Block Island (a transient person), father of John and Samuel Adjett, late of Hartford, deceased, now appeared and moved the court to reverse the decree committing administration upon the estates of John and Samuel Adjett to John and Samuel Howard, the father claiming the right.’ The decree was not then reversed. On the settlement the court ordered distribution to the father as next-of-kin, but Samuel Howard appealed to the superior court, 1713. The father was evidently the founder of ‘Hatchett’s Point,” Lyme, and his sons died intestate, and probably by accident, as their inventories were exhibited the same day in court (SOURCE: Barbour, Lucius Barnes; Families of Early Hartford, Connecticut, p. 325.)

[There is no mention of a son named George at Hartford, CT. Perhaps George lived with his father, John Adjett (Adsit), at Block Island, Rhode Island. Some claim that the John Adjett named above is a DIFFERENT man than John Adsit, Sr. of Lyme. However, it is interesting to note that John Adsit, Sr. of Lyme named his first two sons “John” (b. circa 1714 at Block Island? Lyme?) and “Samuel” (b. 1719 at Lyme). Naming children after deceased sons and daughters was a common practice in those times. And John and Samuel Adjett of Hartford both died in 1712, before John and Mary’s sons, John and Samuel, were born.]

6. [1709] Sarah Howard, the first wife (according to Newman Ward Adsit) of John Adsit Sr. of Lyme, CT, was a daughter of Henry Howard and Sarah Stone of Hartford, CT. Henry Howard died around March 1709. His last will does not mention his daughter, Sarah, so it is assumed she died before March 1709. It mentions two grandsons, John Achett (who lives with Henry, according to the will) and Samuel Achett. However, no grandson named George Achett is named in the will. (SOURCE: Manwaring, Charles William; A Digest of the Early Connecticut Probate Records – Vol II, p. 84.)

[a. Did Henry Howard intentionally leave a grandson named George out of his will? b. Or did John Adsit take his son George away from Hartford, CT – perhaps to Block Island, R.I. – after his wife Sarah (Howard) Adjett died in Hartford? c. Or did John and Sarah (Howard) Adsit both move from Hartford, CT, to Block Island, R.I., with son George, leaving their older sons, John and Samuel, behind in Hartford? Unfortunately, no death record exists for Sarah (Howard) Adjett – or for her father, Henry Howard – in Hartford, CT, prior to 1709. Only Henry’s will provides an approximate death date for him. d. If George is not Sarah (Howard) Adsit’s son, then he MUST be the son of a wife of John Adsit Sr. other than Sarah or Mary Adsit – meaning John Adsit, Sr. of Lyme had three wives – one between Sarah Howard and Mary (whose maiden name is unknown).]

Comments (with your sources, if possible)?

Sincerely,
Jan (great-great grandson of Frances (Adsit) Brooks, a 3rd great-granddaughter of John Adsit, Sr. of Lyme, CT)

Regarding your note that Brewer Edgett is a descendent of the Edgett-Burnham Canning Co. in New York, I must dispute that information.

The company was founded in 1863 in Newark, New York, in Wayne County in Upstate NY, by Ezra A. Edgett, b. 2 Nov 1828 in Freehold, Greene, New York, d. 30 Jan 1889 in Newark, NY. Ezra married Harriet Marvin - they had one son, James, and two daughters, Edith and Mary.

James and his wife, Anna Wilcox, had only one child, a son, Oliver, who was my great-grandfather. Oliver and his wife, Sarah VanInwagen, had one son, Roger, and three daughters, Hilda, Hazel and Ruth.

Roger and his wife, Elizabeth Donahue, had one son - my father - and a daughter, both still living.

For additional information, you can refer to our Public Family Tree (Edgett-Richmond).

Eugene and Margaret were my mother-in-law's grandparents. Her father was William Edgette. According to her, Eugene was an orphan, but I have found him listed with parents on earlier census. Maybe he was adopted? Eugene and Margaret are buried in Armada. Do you have anything on Margaret Irwin? You can reach me at lihall1019@aol.com.
Thanks,
Linda Hall

Thank you for your response. Since my posting I have learned
that the family name was originally EGYED. The Children changed their name
to Edgett. We do not all of the siblings at this time, so there could be a
Charles Edgett in the family. We think that the children were born about 1915 or later.
Does this fit into your information? At this time we do not know if any of the
children were in Alberta.
Ken

After my reply i searched the 1901 cenus of Alberta and
found a Charles E. Edgett who was in the MacLeod census area.
I states his age as 22 which would be in 1901. The country he came from is NB.
which could be New Bruinswick (another province on the east coast).
Under the column Rel is says Pol. I do not know what this means.
If this person is your Charles you could go to the website and ask
someone about the abreviations. The site is
agsedm.edmonton.ab.ca
If this helps let me know.
Ken
There is no connection between your Charles Edgett and my EGYED/EDGETT families.
The Charles in the 1901 Alberta census in not related. He was in Canada before my family came here. I noticed at gen forum under the Edgett name someone
looking for Edgetts from N.B. You should look at that site to see if you have any connection with that person.
EGYED is Hungarian.
Good luck in your search
Ken

Albert Roswell Edgett and Ada (May) Maloy

My great-grandfather and -mother. Unfortunately, the few family members I knew who may have known anything about them have recently passed away. Albert was the last son of Horatio Nelson Edgett; of Isaiah and Beersheba, etc.
Albert and Ada are listed in the 1900 census as husband and wife in Baltimore Maryland, with children who I know are my grandfather and great aunts. Ada Maloy Edgett is listed in the 1910 census as living with her father, William Maloy, which tallies with family legend. (I have quite a bit of information on the Maloys, about whom the family was proud. I even have a silver spoon engraved "Maloy." Albert, alas, was a different kettle of fish.)
Legend has it that Albert Roswell Edgett tried to move the family to New Orleans, with no success: Ada moved back to live with her parents. And Albert Roswell was then persona non grata for ever more. His fate (if indeed any family member knew it) and pretty much all details of their marriage have been expunged from family memory. The censuses prove that the story is correct in at least the detail of her living with her parents.
Does anyone have ANY information about my great grandfather? He is not listed in the 1930 census, and I'm at a dead end. Thanks so much.
Yours truly,
Eugene Albert "Bucky" Edgett III

Brewer Edgett

Brewer M. Edgett was married to Sarah Jane CASE. Brewer was my great-grandfather.

He had a son Anderson Edgett b. Lamar CO, Paris,Tx. Jan 11, 1879-d Aug-1936..buried at Oakwood Cemetary..Denison,Tx.

Brewer also had a son L.J. (Lonnie Jacob) b. Sept. 14, 1886...Buried Fairview Cemetary...Denison, Tx.

Another son G. W. (Blind) b. Dec. 24, 1874 d. May 16, 1936
is buried at Oakwood Cemetary.

Brewer Edgett is listed in the Denison, Tx. City Directory of
1876 as a brick molder...the city has a section of brick pave-
ment Woodard St. and he had a part of this....

Brewer came to Denison and lived off Fannin Rd...his gravestone has a mistake on it...it reads EDGET...

Brewer's wife Sarah Jane CASE was born in Illinois.her parents..were Anderson and Mary J. CASE who were from Ohio. (Personally, I believe Mary J. Case EDGETT was a heir
to the Jerome Cases of JI CASE farm impliments....IN the late 20's the story goes that Sarah received a letter from a lawyer in Illinois and she tore it up...back then people were
sceptical of everything. I believe that Sarah received the
letter due to the sell-out rights of a thresher machine, etc. that
Case sold to another company. Two years later, I might add
they got the bought the rights back and it came to be the most used equipment of all......

Brewer's son L.J. (Doc) was married 3 times....I think
they are in order Sallie?
Grace Lewis Edgett
Lucy Lorena Powell Edgett

Lucy was my grandmother...who by the way came from MS
and and her relatives fought in Major Civil War battles....
the family joke was grandma & grandpa fought aggainst each other!

Send E-Mail...interested....Brewer Edgett was a descendant
of EDGETT-BURNHAM CANNING CO out of NEW YORK...
that I am sure....

Lonnie Edgar Edgett..Denison,Tx.

Lonnie Edgar Edgett last lived in Colbert, Oklahoma...married
to a Joyce Edgett. Lonnie has passed away..he had brain cancer...his mother was Lena Roberson Edgett Walsh who died in approx. Jan-Feb 2003...she is buried at Fairview Cemetary...Denison, Tx. I regret to say...Lonnie's body was
given to science and he went to NEW YORK to help mankind.

Lonnie Edgar Edgett did not have brain cancer due to genetics, etc...I don't think. Lonnie was in a terrible car wreck
in his teens and the car he was in hit some guard rail...lots of it...and Lonnie was miracle to be alive...in all sense of the words....Lonnie's father was Leon Edgett buried at Fairview
Cemetary..Denison, Tx. He had brothers...Richard deceased
m. to Doris and others.....E-Mial for more info...
