This is where you are going to get stuck. It has always been said that the Edgeworths hailed from Edgware, this is pure conjecture, BUT the name Edgeworth came from Lancashire and/or Gloucestershire. Edgware does not have the same meaning. Roger or John have also been names as the possible fathers of Edward and John but no proof anywhere of either or. Roger being a Catholic when he fancied it made no difference either as they were allowed to marry(though not shouting it from roof tops) in 16th c England. However my money would be on John as Francis named his first boy John (I believe) and this fits with the English naming patterns. I can tell you though that the mother of John and Roger is (Rose Edgeworth) is buried at Chalfont St Peter. Confirm your stuff though with the Irish roots as Ambrosia and John Talbot (if they are on your list as father and son) are stated as having been born in Dublin BUT Ambrosij an Johannes Talbottus were born in Lancashire the same years as these two. Bit of a coincidence!!!! In fact often you see it claimed that Francis and Edward were born in Dublin. Hope this helps...

Edgware in Middlesex was previously called Edgworth. Various historical documents refer to it as such, and it was known as Edgworth in the time of Samuel Pepys, who mentions it in his diary. Also, it is marked as Edgworth on old maps.
This, of course, does not by any means confirm what Richard Edgeworth recalls hearing as a boy from his grandmother, Lady Edgeworth, as recounted in the “Black Book”; which is where the idea of coming from Edgworth in Middlesex comes from. But it does mean that Edgworth/Edgware is as likely to be where we take our name from as places of similar names in Lancashire, Gloucestershire and Bedfordshire. Interestingly, Richard Edgeworth mentions alternatives himself in the “Black Book”.
However, I think it might be a mistake to think that the Edgeworths resided at a place of that or similar name immediately before Edward and Francis went to Ireland. We have some information about the two or three generations before Francis, but it is sparse and disjointed.
I hope the above is of some interest to you.

Yes is is of interest to me as the name Edgware and Edgeworth obviously have different meaning and the geography of Edgware did not fit with the meaning of Edgeworth, so I am suprised unless geographically the format of the land is vastly different from 600 years ago. I have only found Rose mother of Roger and John so any information you have however disjointed would be welcome. The earliest know Edgeworth is actually from lancashire (Peter de Egewurth in 1221) I would be interested to see if the Coat of Arms are the same as the Edgeworths of Ireland, this is something I have never considered looking into. Any information there at all?? Cheers Fran

Hi James i am still looking into this Edgeworth/Edgware scenario and can find no connection i would be grateful if you could actually give me a bibliography of where these statements are made, if you happen to have them I would be grateful. As London is where i was born and bred it has been relatively easy to access info but to date have found none to confirm the name as Edgeworth. It is the historical origin that stumps me as Edgeworth as a name does not describe Edgware by nature as it was. I would also be grateful if you could send me the disjointed info you have on the generations before Francis and Edward. I only have burial details of mother (of Roger and John) Ruth in the Chalfonts. My money will always be on the Edgeworth of Lancashire as the earliest at 1200 something. Anyway anything would be a great help.

Hello I am still looking for that dijointed information two generations before Francis is there any chance I could have what you have as i may be able to work from there. I also thought I would show you this snippet about Edgware
HISTORY
A charter in 978 AD marks the earliest known reference to Edgware. Throughout the Middle Ages Edgware was primarily private land reserves. Notable land owners in the area were the Priory of St. Bartholomew and the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem.
Cheers Fran
