I am a distant relative an would love to share information with you. My information was that Nora Edgeworth had married William Dooley (which was obviously a mistake and that was as far as I had gotten on this branch). Your Nathaniel Lovel Edgeworth was the brother of my gggg-grandfather, Richard L. Edgeworth (1795-1861). Please e-mail me at pete1024@comporium.net.

Confusion concerning family of James H. Edgeworth (b. May 1850) and Lizzie House (b.1851)

I have been tracing the Edgeworth branch of my family. I've been using James Pigg's book, Descendants of Richard Edgeworth, for most of it. I try to go back through the census records to verify what I can. but this family is really hard to follow in the censuses. Can anyone straighten me out on this family?

Here's what I have:

James H. Edgeworth (b.May 1850 Cobb County, GA, son of John Edgeworth and Martha Ogburn) md. Lizzie House (b.1851 Tuscaloosa County, AL)

Children:

Addie (b.Mar 1884) md. W.H. Finley

Ella (b.Jul 1886) md. ___ Armore, ___ Jones, and S.W. Mallory

Edna (or Ida) (b.Jan 1888)

Miles E. (b.5 Jun 1892 - 8 May 1976) md. Stella Mae Henderson (1 Jun 1898-15 Jun 1966). Children: George Hall and William Kenny Thomas

John "Johnnie" (b.4 Feb 1893 - 15 Jan 1976) md. Florence Beck (17 Feb 1907-Nov 1991). Child: Paul.

Ginger (b.Apr 1896)

Georgia Bell (b.Apr 1896)

Ruby Lee (b.1900)

Andrew J. (b.1 Mar 1900 - 23 Feb 1988) md. Bertha L. Beck. Children: James Harvey and Ruth.

James B. "Jimmy" (b.1904) md. Ida Mae Frost. Child: David.

Annie V. (b.1905)

Hi. I am related to the Edgeworth's of Bibury, Gloucestershire. Richard Lovell Edgeworth the father of Maria Edgeworth was born in Bath, Somerset on the May 31st 1744 and died on December 25th 1780 in Edgeworthstown, Ireland and Maria Edgeworth his daughter was born in Black Bourton, Oxfordshire on 1 January 1768 and died in 1849 in Edgeworthstown, Ireland This maybe the link between Edgeworth's in Ireland and the Edgeworth's in Gloucestershire and Somerset. Richard Lovell Edgeworth was married four times and fathered 22 children.

Hi Rose
Thanks for the info.
I'll look into offspring of Walter when I get home.
On the 1881 Census He appears (age 26) with Kate (age 25) and two children Earnest (age 2) and Tom (age 1)
I was unaware of other siblings however (except William now)
Also note that his mother Charlotte (Nee Smith) was living next door as a widow.
Does anyone have any clearer information on Kate, wife of Walter. He maiden name seems in doubt. She is variously recorded as White, Wood and West, individually or in various double barrelled forms. The same query for her parents too.(I'm sure you have worked this one out Fran)
How come James was born in Sunderland. His father William must have moved there, probably for work, but it seems a long way from Donnington in Gloucestershire. Do we know his occupation?

And Rose, yes I would be interested in the Coat of Arms, though I feel a bit dubious about it. All our ancestors seem to have been farm workers (e.g. Walter above is recorded as a general labourer). And I feel sure that such could not acquire a coat of arms. There is a Coat of Arms for the Irish Edgeworths of course, but we have no proof of a link.

Thanks Rose and all who read this

Thanks
Hi Rose
Yes, James (b.1743) our common ancestor apparently had 8 offspring
John, b.1769 probably died young
John, b.1771
Thomas, b.1773 (Your ancestor)
Elizabeth, b1776
Ann, b.1778
James, b.1780
Samuel, b.1785
William, b.1789
and
Joseph, b.1792 (My ancestor)

My own line of descent is through Joseph.
He married Hannah Rachel
He had two sons among others, David (b.1834) and John (b.1823)
John had a son called David (b.1869)
David the elder (b. 1834)had a daughter called Mary Ann (Known as Poly)(b.1863)
David the younger (b.1869) married his first cousin Poly (b.1863) in 1891
One of their children was Maggie Kezia my grandmother.
She married Joseph Thomson.

The upshot of this, is that I have 2 edgeworth lines of descent, both tracing back to Joseph.

This line had moved north from the Cotswolds to Birmingham where I grew up.
I now live just down the road in Coventry.
Where are you?
I'd love to get the details of your side of the family.

Thanks
Ian

If I understand your Edgeworth lineage, it is that you believe your Michael Edgeworth was a brother to Thomas Edgeworth, b c 1876. This latter Thomas Patrick Edgeworth lived in Cook Co., IL., and operated a stone quarry. His father was Patrick Edgeworth [1836-1912]. In my research, I have not been able to identify a Michael Edgeworth as a son of this Patrick Edgeworth. Do you possess some data that establishes such a relationship in this lineage?

Hello Again: The Thomas Patrick Edgeworth, born c 1876 was married to Elizabeth Halloran. Their issue were: Francis, Caroline, Elizabeth, Catherine, Isabella, Thomas, and Richard. I have not found a Michael Edgeworth as a child of Thomas and Elizabeth [Halloran] Edgeworth.

Isabella was the mother of my associate whom I am attempting to assist. He claims no memory of an uncle named Michael. He does, however, claim as did you, that the family lore suggested that this lineage was English and that they went to Ireland as overseers for the crown. I do not know whether this line I am investigating was part of any such arrangement. I do not place too much value upon family lore and only use it as information for further study and review.

Thomas Patrick Edgeworth, born about 1876, was a son of Patrick Edgeworth and Bridget [maiden surname unknown]. Patrick was born c 1835 in Ireland according to census data. He died in 1912. He was a stonecutter and lived in Cook County,IL. He emigrated to the USA in 1845 on the ship Yorkshire out of Liverpool. The Yorkshire docked in New York on July 30, 1845. Another passenger on the Yorkshire was a Thomas Edgeworth believed to have been a brother of the Patrick mentioned above.

The father of Patrick Edgeworth[1835-1912] appears according to census data to have been Thomas Edgeworth [see the 1850 federal census, Cook Co.,IL]. He was born c 1800 in Ireland. According to the ages and places of birth of his children, it appeared that this Thomas Edgeworth came to the USA about 1844.

Hope this helps.

Francis
Ok I can see where you have gone slightly adrift and it is because of initial wrong information, I have researched this well (because of the 2 Williams) and even sourced the Marriage certificate of William and Charlotte Smith.
James born in 1743 married Mary Seate (or Seats unsure spelling) on 14.01.1769. They had 9 children two of which were James (christened 23.09.1780) and Thomas 29.06.1773.
James married Hannah Locke Showell (then lived in Brimpsfield) on 27th May 1805 and one of their children was William (christened on 24.12.1811)Thomas married Ann Buckle (though i cant find certificate and stayed in Bibury)they had numerous children of which 2 were William (christened 20th March 1808) and Martha (christened 31.12.1813). Thomas's son William(10.03.1808)is your GG father and he married Charlotte Smith. James's son William married Thomas's daughter Martha. I hope this clarifies this for you. There was confusion for a while as a published book had the details incorrect. To clarify this I decided to get the marriage certificates.
This Thomas Edgeworth appeared in the 1850 federal census for the 5th Ward, Chicago, Cook Co., IL. He was age 50 years (b c 1800)and a laborer, born in Ireland. His wife, Ann, was age 42, born in Ireland: Issue were: Patrick 12, b Ireland; Catherine 11, b Ireland; Thomas 7, b IL; Honora 5, b IL; Bridget 3, b IL; and Richard 1, b IL.

I am not an Edgeworth family historian.
Patrick Edgeworth, b 1835, Ireland

Harold Gierman, is a son of Isabella Edgeworth. She was born in 1913 in Illinois and was the daughter of Thomas Patrick Edgeworth [b 1876 in IL, probably Cook Co.] and his wife Elizabeth Halloran (? sp). The 1920 Federal Census for Cook County, Illinois, listed this family and six other issue: Francis, Caroline, Elizabeth, Catherine, Thomas, and Richard. Richard is yet living and is 90 years old but living in a nursing home.

The father of Thomas Patrick Edgeworth was Patrick Edgeworth [b 1835 in Ireland: see 1880 census for Chicago]. His occupation was that of a stonecutter. He m Sophronia (maiden surname unknown). The issue as given in the 1880 Federal Census for Cook County,IL, were: Anna, Mary, Richard, James, "Bessie," Thomas, and Catherine. The family believes, from oral history sources, that Patrick, b 1835, had the middle name of Thomas. This, however, has not been proven.

I cannot discover the father of Patrick Edgeworth, b 1835 in Ireland. Is anyone able to assist? Since census data is repleat with errors, I cannot be certain concerning his place of birth. The family is certain that their ancestors arrived in the USA at about the time of the potato famine in Ireland. Which Edgeworth ancestor emigrated is not confirmed.

I am unable to find the father of Patrick Edgeworth, b 1835. If you can assist, I would be indebted to you. Any potential clues for further investigation are invited.

I am not an Edgeworth descendant but am attempting to assist this family with their family history.

Edgeworth and Thomas are brothers. My search is taking me to England even though it is stated the elders were born in Ireland. I'm reviewing information that the Edgeworth clan was born in England and moved to Edgeworthtown, Ire. I'll keep you posted.

I am a direct decendent of Patrick Edgeworth. His father Thomas Patrick Edgeworth born approx. 1800 Ireland, came to the US with wife Anna, son Patrick and daughter Catherine. Thomas also was a stonecutter and carpenter. The other children were Thomas, Heanora, Bridgite and Richard all born in Cook County, IL. I do believe Thomas Patrick Edgeworth born 1876 was my great grandfather Michael's brother. Contact me as I also am looking for missing information on this branch of our family.

Family of Oliver Augustus Edgeworth (1857-1932)

Oliver Augustus married Louisa R. McMillan (1858-1907). They lived in Chesterfield Co., SC and Union Co., NC (and others). Among their children were the triplets, Agatha, Eola, and Eva. They were born Feb. 26, 1897 and died July 21, 1898 (two sources:(1)Their tombstone at the Old Antioch Methodist Church, Chesterfield County, SC (2)Descendants of Richard Edgeworth by James C Pigg).

I was wondering if anyone knew what happened to these three little girls that caused them all to die on the same day. I was told that they died from typhoid fever, but it seems a little odd to me that all three died on the same day. Perhaps the tombstone was put there later and they couldn't remember the dates and just used the one tombstone out of convenience? Does anyone have any information about them?

Looking for my Edgeworth Ancestors

I'm trying to trace the Edgeworth branch of my family. I've been told that it traces back to Maria Edgeworth (the author) but I have no proof. I would love to hear from any long lost relatives or anyone who has information to share with me. Here's what I know:

My great-great-grandmother was Theressa Emaline Edgeworth(1849-1929, buried in Kershaw, SC). She married William Henry Sowell (1841-1923). Their children: Julia A., Emma LaBarge (my great-grandmother), Charlie C., Lou J., Authur J., William E., Henry W., N. R. I read somewhere that she was the daughter of William K. Edgeworth and Louisa J. but I have no documentation.
