HI - I talk to your mom all the time - and I am the one who had my brother take a DNA test - it showed no relations to any Baileys that had tested - I was sure Johns real last name was not Bailey and that he had made up a "Bailey" father and the DNA tests more or less confirm it - besides not being related to any Baileys - we didnt even fit the same halotypes that the rest of the Baileys had - we showed our halo type as from the middle east - which if you look at pictures of John - he was quite dark as was Ray - my grandfather - son of John by his wife Edith Lawrence - and my father and all his siblings were quite dark also - anyhow - we wil never find his real father - dont expect to - but you can always trace his mother Mary and her family-

Hi cousins,

Another 3 years have passed and someone else is hot on the trail. I just started a family tree at MyHeritage.com 4 or 5 days ago. I am Janet P.'s son.

So John Bailey (Previously W. John Edinger, Son of Mary Edinger, Grandson of John Edinger) and Kittie Bailey (Maiden name Hines) were my Great Grand Parents. I knew her as Grandma Mosk (I don't know if the spelling is correct on Mosk?) And her funeral was the first that I remember.

I understand that some Bailey (A descendant of John, above) recently took a DNA test, which resulted in NO Bailey's. That had to a bit disappointing.

How will we ever find John Bailey's (Previously W. John Edinger b. 1862 in IA) real Father?

My Dad's side was a breeze. (Well, there is going to be some fact checking that could take awhile, but it looks good!) I made a direct line to the inception of the family name. And back 3 more generations took me to King Henry III. That is the year 11**. From there you can go back to about the year 500 with Theodelinde De Geneva.

Thanks for the reply. I think the Daniel you refer to as your GG Grandfather is actually your GGG Grandfather. The Daniel who married Alice Flaherty was my Grand Uncle, and his father was Abraham Daniel Edinger, who was the son of Daniel Edinger and Catherine Lippencott.

I am interested in any information you have about Daniel and Alice. Daniel was one of 11 siblings, many of whom moved to Trenton, NJ to work on the railroad or in the building trade. His eldest brother, Walter had a farm on the Pennington Road north of the City reservoir. That branch of the family moved to California after Walter died in 1926.

Thanks for your input!

Hi Richard,
I just saw you post while searching some family history though I am not a ancenstry.com member. Daniel Edinger was also my GG grandfather!! His son Daniel moved to Trenton and married Alice Flaherty. They had a son, my grandfather and named him Russel Abraham. He married Clara Jones and they had 3 children, my mother being one. Her name was Beatrice Edinger. I have seen their graves in Greenwood Cemetery in Hamilton Twp, NJ. Just wanted to fill in some blanks if you wanted them. Feel free to email me if you have any questions, drieszer@yahoo.com. And I remember my mom saying her grandfather Daniel worked on the railroad.

No, the Michigan Settlement was in Texas. I guess many families from up north traveled together and ended up in that area of Texas. It is rare to hear of the area now. I have heard very little about names. A Saylor cousin tried to put together a paper, but there were mistakes. I have used the census and other records to piece the family together. It is my husband's side of the family. My families were very good about writing names and dates, cemeteries, counties, etc.
One day I hope to be able to visit NJ/MI and get records. I am in the DAR, US1812, etc but my sons aren't interested. I hope by finding the ancestor with their name they will be interested in the SAR! Thank you for the info you have sent. It will help me to trace the Edinger roots!

I've never heard of the Michigan Settlement, and I grew up it Pohatcong Township, NJ. Two generations after Daniel and Elizabeth, many decended relatives gave up farming the area and went to work on the Central Railroad of NJ, or became building contractors. Phillipsburg, NJ became an important junction on the railroads of the time. The decline of the railroads began in the 1920s and by 1940, Phillipsburg had lost its importance as a railroad stop. Pohatcong Township (just to the south), settled during colonial times, is still a rural area of dairy farms, and many people must find work in adjacent communities (Central NJ/NY City or Allentown/Bethlehem PA). Many of Daniel and Catherine's grandchildren moved to Trenton, NJ, as the two towns were linked by the railroad. Benjamin and Elizabeth are the only ones that I have found from that generation that migrated west. Many of their cohorts are buried in the Riegelsville Union Cemetery in Riegelsville, PA and attended St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Riegelsville, or if they died in Trenton, they are buried in Greenwood cemetery in Trenton.

The Saylor family moved south, to Honey Grove, Fannin Co., TX. This place in Texas is north, or ne of Dallas, and close to the Oklahoma Border.
Benjamin died in 1888, and Eliza (Elizabeth) died in 1889 from yellow fever. My husband and I went to Fannin Co. last year and found Benjamin Saylor's will, which has his exact death date. Unfortunately, we could not find anything with Elizabeth's death date. They were not buried in the cemetery, most likely because their deaths were from yellow fever. We did find a paper in the library mentioning the Michigan Settlement, and the Saylors were living in that area. We don't know where it was located. One thing I read was Michigan was a territory, so I am not sure if the location they lived in NJ was referred to as the Michigan Territory or not.Benjamin's father was named Jacob and lived with the family when they moved to Texas. Jacob, on the 1860 census, noted his parents were also born in NJ. I did find a Jacob Saylor in the Rev. War who fought the Battle of Trenton. I did find the family living there, so I think Jacob's father was also a Jacob.
Before the Saylor family moved to Texas they lived in Orion, Michigan (later would be called Lake Orion). They lived on Hemingway Rd. The time they lived there was from 1850-1877. They moved to Texas in 1877.
I will try to find the will and let you know when Benjamin died. Please tell me anything you know about the families. I am wanting to do this for my children.

This reply is 7 years later, but hopefully you're still checking your Ancestry account. Daniel and Catherine were my GG Grandparents. Catherine's maiden name is Lippencott, and I haven't been able to trace her surname further than her. I'm also unable to track down her grave. Daniel is buried in the Finesville Union Cemetery in Finesville, NJ. Finesville is an unincorporated place name in Pohatcong Township. Prior to the 1880's Pohatcong was part of Greenwhich (pronounced GREEN-which) township. The Edinger family homestead was located in another southerly placename in Pohatcong/Greenwhich Township called Carpentersville, NJ, on the Delaware River. Daniel's daughter Elizabeth married Benjamin Saylor, and they emigrated westward. That's probably where your line picks up. I am decended from Daniel's son Abraham. My tree is public, so hopefully you can explore the ancestors you are interested in.

You mentioned your mother-in-law, JANE EDINGER, who was raised by CYRUS LLOYD EDINGER, her uncle. Do you know which of CYRUS' brother's was her father? Was it GAINS? I'm also trying to figure out who the father is of ANITA L.
Marian L Leonard married Jerry A Edinger

Taking a long shot here, but I am looking for a Marian (Marion) Lee Leonard. She was born abt 1938 in Washington DC. She married Robert Eugene Eyler in 1954 in Maryland They had 4 children and were divorced in 1960 in Alabama. By 1963 she had remarried and had the last name of Akins. I found a marriage license on ancestry.com for Marian L Leonard married to a Jerry A Edinger in 1981 in Los Angeles. I think this is a long shot because it would seem unlikely that she would be in California when her family is in DC/Maryland area. If anyone can provide any evidence that would support or disprove that this may or may not be the Marian L Leonard we are looking it would be appreciated.

Edingers in Philadelphia

I'm looking for some information on my great x5 grandfather, Solomon Edinger, born in Pennsylvania in 1801 and living in Philadelphia from 1850 onwards. I've collected about as much on him as I can find on Ancestry, but there's so much I don't know, like who his parents were and where in Pennsylvania he was born. I know there are lots of Edingers from other parts of Penn., and I'm trying to find out if he is related to any of them.

The most frustrating thing is that I found years-old post on another message board from a person who has Solomon's obit, mentioning that he was a member of Odd Fellows Lodge 168 and is buried in the Odd Fellows cemetery in Philadelphia. I tried contacting the person, but the post being nearly 10 years old, no one ever responded. Does anyone know anything about Solomon?

The first names seem to repeat each generation, so I am not certain where our lines cross/meet. Here is the name in Germany that I have on my file for Adam Edinger Sr b. 1810: Evangelisch,Lampertheim,Starkenburg,Hessen(Germany). He is buried in Greenlawn cemetery in Chillicothe d. 1890. Immig: 5 Aug 1848 arrival in NY Depart from Havre on ship St Denis. His father I have as Peter Edinger b. 1784 Krickenbach, Pfalz, Bayern. I have as Peters' father Jacob Edinger w/no info. That is where my line stops.

Hi - my grandmother's name was Meta Edinger, and her father was one of the butchers in Chillicothe in the mid 1800s. The brothers (her uncles) all were butchers. I am trying to trace back beyond her dad, George Earl Edinger, whose father was Johann Tobias Edinger. His Dad was Adam Edinger George Earl and his brothers Will, Tobias, and Adam had the meat business in Chillicothe, and we think that J Tobias came from Lampetheim, Germany. Don't have much more than that, would love to know more about how and exactly when they came over from Germany.

I looked on the Ohio map of counties, and Washington is across the state from Darke county -- but then, Ohio isn't that big of a state, so you never know. Our family, too, is rather "stuck" in Ohio. We can trace our Edingers to Darke county where there were two brothers working on a farm -- but we don't know if Edinger was their own name, or that of the man for whom they worked and they took it on as theirs. Good luck in your search! Judy

Hopefully I'm following good 'post etiquette' in where I am posting this....

I have been trying to research my great grandfather's family for quite some time now. He lived in MI for most of his life, but talked of being sent to a 'home for boys' in PA or OH as a young child where he and possibly a brother never saw or really spoke about their family again. A census stated that his father and mother were from PA. I am trying to find any links to a Charles E Edinger born 1890 in PA or OH.

I know this may be unrelated, but I am trying to get the word out about my search in as many places as I can.

Thanks!

Edinger in Colorado

Looking for info about Anton Edinger family. They seem to have started out in Elbert County, Colorado with the Homestead Act. Sons Engle and Adolph seem to have gone to Routt County, CO which was later divided into Routt and Moffat Counties, CO. They lived in places like Lay, Maybell, Great Divide.

I am not a direct descendant of this line, but believe they married into my line, which is Schaefer. Some Schaefer men do show up in Moffat County, CO - the earliest I can place them there is the 1918 WWI Draft Registration, but in 1920 they were all involved in farming/ranching in Moffat Co.

In any case, would appreciate any info about Edinger or Schaefer in Moffat County, CO in early 1900s.

I'm looking for information on Charles Mertz b. 1829 who married Anna Freach and gave birth to Annie Mertz. Annie married John Lieb and settled outside of Philadelphia. I notice you're searching for Mertz's and are also from Philly. Wondering if there might be a connection?

Lauren
