I will send you a copy of what I wrote if you did not get it.

I feel that it is important that anyone among the Ettress, Etris, Edris researchers not be misinformed about the George L. Ettress and the Richmond family of Philadelphia.

Thanking you
Sincerely,
Patricia Schell

Hi Hal.......Hope you are still around.........I have just found information that Andreas Edris and his wife Anna Margaretha Noll are my 5th Great Grandparents. Their daughter, Magdalena Edris, born February 1764 in Bethel Township, Lebanon County, Pennsylvania, died August 29, 1834 in Lebanon County, Pennsylvania, married Christian Shuey, about 1784.

Is this the same Andreas Edris that is your Ancestor? I have his will, (very difficult to read) written June 28, 1800 (I think) and read Nov. 15, 1808. It mentions his beloved wife, Anna Margaret.

I see that Steve Zinger writes that he was married to Susanna Noll. (back in 2000)

I have NO information about the Edris's, except what I have read on this message board. And do not have Magnalia's siblings, either.

Can you or anyone else help me with some info on these people?

Thank you, Joan joschool@galesburg.net

Hal, I was browsing through the Edris message boards and found your message about George Etris. I have a George Etris, born 1744 in my family. I am not an Edris but my great grandmother was one. She was Sally Jane Edris, born June 30, 1865 and died August 31, 1913 in Woodward, Oklahoma. She married Frank Benne. Her parents were John Edris, born July 17, 1828 and died March 17, 1900 and Amelia Keale, born July 2, 1822 and died October 1860. These Edris' sure did have a lot of Johns, Georges, Williams, Charles, Elizabeths, etc that it is hard to follow the family. I would love to hear from you to get further information on your Edris family. Thanks, Dee Findley

I'm not sure of your ancestry because my data on your line ends with John henry Benne.

The date of birth I have for George Etris is 1748 according to records at the Germantown Church in Philadelphia.

Drop me an email and we can exchange information.

George L. Etris

Hi Hal:

Thank you for the information. When I get to L.A.'s Mormon Temple's Family History Center...I"m going to check to see if there are any links in a number of places. I really appreciate the information!!!

Anyway, in case you ever run into someone with a problem with the 1880 OH census which lists George L. Ettress with a wife Sarah, children Maggie, Willie, Laura, plus m-i-l Electa Knapp. Be assured he is not an Ettress (or Etris as his 1st m.c. says). I have copies of pension papers from the National Archives which show in his own hand that he isn't.

He was my grandfather, George Washington Richmond, and my Mother was Laura. She had told me the problem that had caused him to "take his cousin's name". (I'm wondering if it was his Mom's maiden name or a sister's married name...it could be the Etris you gave me.,,never can tell with granpa!!!)

He legally married Sarah as Etris, and later as Richmond (I have that m.c.)(in process of getting the 1st one which he listed on the pension papers.) I guess I'm the last one that knows what happened. Aside from proving it which I have...I'm now trying to find who George L. Etris was.

I guess our older generations would be furious with us if they knew what we find about them. However, figure you should know...in case some Etris gets mixed up with the Ohio 1880 census.

If I ever find the link...I'll let you know.

Thanks sincerely,
Pat

Hal:

Thanks for answering me, and for giving me another reference! It's appreciated very much. I will check with Samuel Etris.

However, I am curious. You mentioned you had no such Etris from any period other than the late 1700's. Do you have a George L. Etris/Ettress/Etress from the late 1700's? It is possible that it wasn't a cousin as my Mother believed, but the name of one of his sisters in-laws or his Mother's relatives. If it isn't too much trouble, I would really appreciate knowing. I'm sort of getting over being surprised when it comes to my grandfather!

Thanks again,
Pat

Dear Hal:

Glenda Etress Blackenby mentioned your name as the one who can answer questions about the Northern Etris clan.

I have been trying to find a George L. Ettress/Etris from the 1800's. The one listed in Ohio's 1880 census is not an Etris nor an Ettress tho" he used both spellings. He was my grandfather, who my Mother said took his cousin's name for a period of time. When I found the entry, I knew it was my grandfather, but also knew that he not only took the name, but also the birthplace. I now have proof in his own hand that proves he is not George L. Etris. However, I would like to find GLE who was supposed to have been born in NJ.

Are there any Etris/Etress/Ettress listed in Philadelphia from Civil War era thru 1880's????

I would appreciate anything that you could offer on this. I will be happy to send you information as to why the 1880 OH census George L. Ettress isn't an Etris.

Maria Barbara Loesch, youngest child of George Loesch and Christina Walborn Loesch and born Sept. 27, 1744, married Heinrich Schmidt (Henry Smith), date and place unknown, but most likely at Christ Lutheran Church, Stouchsburg, Pa., about 1762.
I do know that they moved to North Carolina in 1769, settling near current Winston-Salem.
As I am writing this note while on vacation and away from my database at home, some of the info I have developed is not at my fingertips and my recollection on some specific dats could be incorrect. If you will e-mail mail me I will get back to you in August when I return home. I can give you a farily complete rundown. I have noted in many Loesch family records that there is incomplete information about Maria Barbara. Apparently, contact was lost between the relatives in Pa. and her family in N.C.

Hi Steve

I assume you are referring to Andreas Etris the father of Johann Leonard Edris, et. al.

The Andreas I have records for is the oldest son of John and Dorothy Etris who owned property around Blue Bell, Pa. "My" Andreas owned a farm in Berks County Pa broding Lebanon County near Hamlin.

If this is the same as your Andreas, I do have more info. I have not ever found a reference to Johann as a middle name however.

Hal

Edris Surname

Yes, Travis, you are one of prbably less than 700 or 800 Edris' in this country.

Most are in pockets in Pennsylvania, Indiana and Iowa plus a few in Washington state and elsewhere. Since you last name is Edris and not Etris or Etters, we are both descended from Andreas Edris and probably Johan Leonard Edris his son.

I'll let you know what info I have on your part of the family tree if you wish to contact me again.

Hal
