My Father's name was also Albert Francis Edstrom - he died in 2010. We are from Nova Scotia but my great grandfather, William Francis Edstrom was born August 26, 1875 in Blackhead, Newfoundland. I understand my great grandfather's father was Henry Edstrom and mother Elizabeth (Teen). If you are aware of any connection please let me know. langlois.kp@ns.sympatico.ca

I am wondering if there is a slim chance that you may be able to help me. I just posted a querie "Seeking Aunt Hannah" and noticed your post. A few months ago I thought that I had a lead on Hannah as having married someone named Beck. She seems to have been my GM's half sister and her daughter's name was Hulda Edstrom. The lead I was following did not seem to be going anywhere. She resided for at least part of her life in Duluth, MN and a distant relative tells me that she never adopted her married name, but that relative is uncertain what her maiden name was. Any chance of a connection here?
Chuck Kuhn
Pittsburgh, PA

Seeking Aunt Hannah

When very young I remember meeting "Aunt Hannah". She was from Minnesota and quite old when I was quite young. What I do know is that she is purported to be half sister to my GM and that she had a daughter Hulda Edstrom, who for quite awhile resided in Duluth and it is quite possible that Hulda never married. Hannah's married name may also have been Edstrom. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanx
Chuck
Pittsburgh, PA

My grandmother's name was Emma Edstrom and I think she may have been related, possibly his daughter since the timing is right. She was born in Scandia and her father's name was John, I believe. This is all from memories told from my parents who are long gone.

Hi,

I tried searching the EMIBAS DVD but there is no direct hits that stands out or that I recommend you to follow up on until you have his date of birth.

The problem is that Mr and Mrs Erickson might be misleading as his father may have been called Erik, which means that Johns last name may have been Eriksson (Eriks-son) due to the patronymic naming convention in Sweden at the time

I tried a very broad search for J Edström, born between 1846-1849, emigrating 1869 on the DVD and only got one search result
Josef Axel Edström, b. 22 MAY 1847 in Tegneby, Göteborgs och Bohus län, Bohuslän. This man emigrated in 30 MAR 1869 from Sweden.

I did another search for Frist name: J Last name: E, born between 1846-1849, emigrating 1869 to try to find any Erikssons (there are a few different ways to spell both Eriksson and John) and got 22 hits, which is not too bad at all.

It does however point out that you do need more information about when he was born to be sure that you follow the right man.

Just let me know when you've got more information about John and I'll do another search.

Anna

Re: John Edstrom born 1847/1848 Sweden - Died 1904 MN

Since my post I did find, according to his death certificate, that his parents are listed simply as "Mr & Mrs Erickson". His birth Country is Sweden. It says time in this city (St. Paul, Ramsey County, MN) is 23 yrs. Time in this state is 35 yrs, which may mean he immigrated here in 1869. Of course I don't know if he may have been in some other state previously to 1869. He married Emily Erickson on Jan 9, 1881 in Hennepin County in MN. Emily came here in 1869 with her parents and a couple siblings. Her name in Sweden was Amelia Lovisa Arvidsdotter. She lived with her parents at the home of her brother in Vasa MN upon arrival in MN. The family took the name Erickson in the USA. John & Emily had 5 children. George 1881-1957 (my g-grandfather). Selma O, 1883-1903. Charles John 1886-1971. Oscar Lenard 1889-1949. Lillian Laura 1892-1962. I believe Charles & Oscar were never married, Selma died at age 19, and Lillian married Bennett Knutson and lived/died in Vancouver BC Canada. All the older family members remember similar stories, but no one was old enough at the time to remember details. I do have one lead I may follow up on. A place called MN Discovery Ctr at Ironworld purchased some records that are now available for viewing.I found there is a John Edstrom who filed "final papers' for citizenship in 1897. Those records, according to an email I received from them, may or may not contain info on place & date of birth, port & date of entry, Country renouncing allegiance to & date of document. They said that I can stop in and look at records for free, or pay $10 by mail. I think there was only one John Edstrom in St. Paul at that time...so I may make a trip up there to check out the records. Thank you for replying....I appreciate any and all help I can get with my searches. This particular one has had me stumped for so long now. : )
Arliene

Hi,

do you have any other clues that might help find where he came from? Was his wife from Sweden? Were they married at the time of arrival? If not, when did she come over? Were the children born in Sweden?
It might be that he changes his last name after arrival so any clues will help in order to find him in the records

Anna

Its nice to meet you Carolyn. Technically I live in Lakewood Ohio but will be moving to Elyria Ohio at the end of this month. Im not sure if you had a chance to see Mark Graham's post from 1999, but I guess Great Grandpa Walfred had 4 children: Lillian, Wilbert(grandpa), Anna and Caroline. I think he said that one of his siters was Martha. Is that correct? Aunt Lillian is Mark's grandmother. I tried to contact him in '06 with no luck.

George had 2 children: Warren Taylor and George Taylor. My dad had three more children later with a second wife. I would love to know the names of GG Walfred's brothers and sisters. Did you know his wifes last name by chance? Dad says her name is Francis. You can call me if you like. My number is 216-906-4739. My email address is mincorvia1@yahoo.com

Melissa

My name is Carolyn Edstrom Herbert. I grew up in suburban Pittsburgh, but I now live near Ocean City Maryland. My grandfather, Theodore, had 3 children: Carl, Gerhart and Ellen. I am his only granddaughter and grandchild. There is another cousin whom I am very close to in Alexandria, VA. She is Charley's granddaughter. She has a sister, Carolyn.

I tried to look you up in the Cleveland phone book, but couldn't find you. I can give you Walfred's brothers and sisters names if you need them. There was an aunt in the Cleveland area as I remember. She had an only daughter who's name was Linda and her husband's name was Bill. Do you know anything about them? They had two children who would be about the age of your dad. My email is 2ceherbert@mchsi.com. I would really like to get to know you and your branch of the family. Did George have children,is another question I have.
Thanks for replying,
Carolyn
He had a brother George that died in 95. My brother Chris Edstrom died in 06. So that then makes us cousins. What is your name and where are you from? I live in Cleveland Ohio.

Was told by various family members, who have now passed on, that John came here with 3 or so brothers. Two other sources verify his wife and children...Emily Edstrom, Charles, George, Oscar, Lillie & Selma. Lived in St Paul, Ramsey County MN at time of his death. The 1895 census says he had been in MN for 22 years at that time. I would like to find out his brothers, and/or parents.....anything? The only thing I have is the 1895 census going forward. There is also some thought that he and his brothers chose different last names upon arriving in the US? My aunt and Uncle thought one of the last names may have been Engebretson?

Re: EDSTROM FAMILY

When I read "Andersdotter" my ears perked up. My family ancestry records go back to Anders Edstrom b Sept. 24, 1794 in Varna (E [Ostergotlands lan]) who married Inga Christina Andersdotter, b Aug 28, 1801 in Ukna (H [Kalmar lan]). This information came to me via Patrick Bjorling Rygert back in the 1990's. Patrick lives in Sweden and was searching for the American Bjorlings. His email address at that time was: pabry@chello.se He might be able to help you with Swedish records or give you a source.
Back to the Edstroms. Anders and Inga Christina had a son Anders Vilhelm Edstrom b Apr 4, 1834 in Varna who married Gustava Charlotta Fristrom. They had 8 children. I don't have any information on Inga Christina Andersdotter but wouldn't it be interesting if we find that she is related to your Anna Maria Andersdotter.(Is Anna Marie and Anna Margharetha the same person?)
I know there are other Edstrom lines as I came across the name of a David Edstrom who was a prominent journalist in Illinois in the 20th century...no relation to us.
You have a good bit of anecdotal information which is nice to have. Good luck with your search. Don't give up. Did you contact Swenson Geneology Center at Augustana College, Rock Island, IL?
Cheers, Dani

My wife is an Edstrom. Her grandfather Arvid Reginald Edstrom was born in Logan, Utah 25 Oct 1903. His parents were John Edstrom and Alma Sophia Olson. John Edstrom disappeared after Arvid was born (they were only married a couple of months before Arvid's birth) and Alma soon remarried. John may have been related, but I can find no other info on him.

Hilmer and Oscar Edstrom children and grandchildren/Neb-Utah

I am looking for relatives to these two brothers who came over from Sweden.
Hilmer and Oscar started out in Saunders Co Nebraska. Hilmer married first to a Malinda ? and had one son Raymond who was born April of 1896 in Nebraska. He married 2nd around 1912 in Wyoming to a Lillie Hoback and they had Esther, Clement, Elmer, Albin, Augusta and Marie. Oscar married a Marie Nelson probably in Salt Lake City, Utah. They had Marie, Allen and Doris. Oscar opened his own shoe store in Logan Utah I believe. He is listed in Utah on the 1910-1930 Census records and both Oscar and Marie died and are buried in the Logan City Cemetery. If anyone could help me out with these couples would be greatly appreciated.
Jackie
