The David
EDWARDS who was my ggggrandfather is mentioned in an article in a collection in the KS State Historical Society about his grandson, William D. JOHNSON. The article reads, "His parents were
Amos and Sarah
EDWARDS Johnson, the former a native of
Illinois and a daughter of David
EDWARDS, a Virginian, who was a pioneer settler of
Illinois. Amos
Johnson was a farmer and a stockman in
Iowa at the time of his death in 1854. After his death, his widow married Uriah
Wooding. In 1858, before her second marriage, she came to
Kansas with her family. They located in
Marshall county and remained there about a year, when they came to
Washington county and bought Government land." The
WOODINGs lived in the same area as the EDWARDSes, Appanoose,
Iowa, and Haddam, Washington Co. KS. The
EDWARDS family showed up on census of Appanoose for 1850. The family consisted of David
EDWARDS who would have been b. 1810 in VA (based upon the 1850 census data,) Elizabeth b. 1815 in TN, Allen b. 1836 in IL, Mary Jane b. 1837 in IL, Susan b. 1838 in IL, Emaline b. 1840 in MI, Isaac b. 1841 in MI, John b. 1842 in MI, and Nancy b. 1843 in MI. Somewhere I wrote "
Macon" by son John's birth year; I'm guessing I meant a place in
Missouri? I don't remember WHY I made that notation... The names of the children appear in the
Stokes EDWARDS lineage, but not this particular family, but I am guessing that somehow they are related, perhaps through a Rev. David
EDWARDS who was an early settler of Barry,
Pike Co. Ill (settled there in 1824, according to historical references, but no children listed...) LDS records a David
EDWARDS b. abt 1809 in Monongalia, VA. His father was listed as David
EDWARDS (b. 1777 in Monongolia VA-d. 31 Aug 1833
Pike Co, Ill) That David
EDWARDS father was listed as David
EDWARDS b. 1748 in
Harrison, VA, d. 1778 in Winchester,
Randolph Co, VA, and HIS father was listed as Thomas
EDWARDS b. 1725 in Chester, PA-d. 1791 in Hampshire VA.
The
WOODINGs were still in Black
Posey Indiana in 1850, but move to Appanoose by 1860. Then Sarah
EDWARDS Johnson married Uriah
Wooding, and her sister Nancy married William
Wooding. The families of all lived around
Washington county KS by 1888 when my grandmother was born to David
EDWARDS' granddaughter. Many of the
EDWARDS children and grandchildren crossed the
Oregon Trail, but David
EDWARDS and his 2nd wife, Sarah WALDEN
EDWARDS remained in Haddam, KS where they died in 1893 and 1900 respectively.
Any help you can give me is greatly appreciated.
