I am looking up my Edwards line. My father's name is Charles Francis Edwards III. Then I know the others before were the second and first. I know CFE II lived in PA most if not all of his life. He was married to a Joanne, but they divoriced. She is still in PA.
I've asked my father and aunts for info, but the hardly have any. I know Joanne's father's name is Xavier.
CFE II also has a daughter out there somewhere named Cynthia. I think she was the product of an affair. If I get any more info, I'll post it.
Diane Edwards Linton

Nancy EDWARDS, 1763 (VA) - 1816 (NC) m. Phillip GUICE, 1755 (MD) - 1830 (NC)

Browsing the various online sources for Edwards’ genealogy, I haven’t found much to go on for the Nancy Edwards who is, perhaps, my 4th great grandmother. The following is reported on the Guise/Guice organization’s website:

Phillip Guice, 1755 (Fredrick MD) - 1830 (Bumcombe NC) married Nancy _______ and they had the following children:

James (1786), Peter (1788), Phillip Jr. (1796), Moses Simmons (1800), Sterling (1801), Ruth (1802), William Gibson (1805), Isaac Newton (1807), Solomon Jacob (1810), Enoch (1812), Joel (1814), Mary (1816).

On some family trees, Nancy EDWARDS, 6 Nov 1763 (VA) - 1816 (Buncombe NC) has been given as Phillip Guice’s wife, and her parents have been listed as Thomas Edwards, 1745 (VA), and Elizabeth Martin. 1747 (MS). The children are all born in Buncombe Co. However, I could find no sources listed.

Supporting Edwards/Guice assumption are some of the children names: Peter & Phillip are the only noticeable “Guice” names of the 12 children. Of the others, a number of “odd” ones occur in some of the Edward trees in NC – Newton, Solomon, Joel, Ruth, Isaac, Jacob. I remember reading of a Jewish connection in one of the lines and 5 of these plus Enoch would fit. James (prior to 1780s), Gibson, Simmons, and Sterling are not listed in any of the (Claud) Guice lines I’ve seen, but I haven’t noticed them in the Edwards line either. Most of these children can be found as adults in US censuses in GA, AL, MS, and LA.

Naturalization of Peter Guice (Phillip’s father) occurred 15 Apr 1771 in Fredrick MD. On the same page of the court records (258), Thomas Edwards’ naturalization was also recorded. The Guice family moved from MD to Rockingham Co VA by 1780, and Phillip went on to Buncombe Co NC by 1800.

Also, there were a number of Edwards reported who lived in western NC or passed through on their way from VA to SC , GA, AL, and TN.

One family tree by W.T. Welch has a Nancy Edwards that would fit in the time frame but her family was in Wayne NC which is in eastern NC. Of course, they could have traveled west.

In any case, if you are following any of these people, I would like to hear from you.

Edwards of Sunderland via Co Sligo

Hi All,

I am trying to further develop my Edwards family branch. I know that my 2nd Great Grandfather was in the British Army and at some point was stationed in Ireland where he met and married Catherine Dunn - their first child, John, was b. 1865 Co. Sligo.

Eventually, William was discharged to Sunderland where a further 4 children were born - Henry 1874, Elizabeth 1877, Louisa 1879 and, my Great-Grandfather, Francis 1883.

There were also Catherine b. 1868 in Chatham and Robert b. 1886 in Hammersmith

Does this match with anyone’s tree?

Thanks

Antony Stafford
My name if Pam Edwards Reeder. I have been studying my ancestors for quite some time and have come to a dead end. I was wondering if there might be any way you could help me.
I am looking for the father of Everett Edwards
Everett b. 1799-1800 in Va. He was married to
Catherine b. 1800
Children:
Wm. H Edwards b. abt 1822 Va.
Mariah b. abt.1830 Va.
Mills b. abt 1833 Va. (my gggfather)

Everett, Catherine, Mariah, Mills are on 1850 census in edgecombe co N.C

Everett, Catherine, Wm., Belfry (Delphia Ann Howard), Jonus, Fred, and Penina, Mill, Candis, Wm & Manerva are on the 1860 census in Neuse River, Johnston, NC.
Their resident of dwelling were house number 860, 861 and 862 in East of the Neuse River district during the 1860 census

Mills E and Emily Candis are listed on the 1870 census in Nansemond, Va. Holy Neck. Later moved to Arkansas where my relatives lived.

I believe Everett must have died in either NC or Va but have not been able to find any record of this. I thought perhaps you might have read of him. I do know there are other Everetts and Mills but thought perhaps the extra info. might help you to recognize him.
I would appreciate any information if possible.

Another NATHANIEL Edwards??

I am trying to find the right Edwards family my GGG grandfather Nathaniel Edwards came out of. His full name may have been Thomas Nathaniel . He used the names Nathaniel and Nathan through out his lifetime. He was born in Virginia in 1668 or 1772, depending on which census you are looking at ,and he called his wife Polly but her name was Mary. 1880 .Her children said she was born in NC . His father was Thomas. At some time during his life ,his father moved the family to NC and eventually Nathaniel (Nathan) ended up living in Brunswick ,NC where he reared his family and died after 1860 ,at about the age of 92. He was living with his son Edmond Edwards when he died. By 1790 a Thomas Edwards is listed on the Brunswick county census for NC . On the 1800 census for Brunswick co. ,there is a Jesse Edwards ,Nathan Edwards, Thomas Edwards and another Thomas Edwards listed. By1810 only Nathan and Edmond are listed for Brunswick. NC.
Nathaniel (Nathan) is suppose to have had 7 children but only 6 have been identified. There names are Lucy married a John Burwell Ross.Edwards (Which may have been his mothers name also) Mary Ann Edwards , She married Seth Milliken. Jonas Edwards, he married Elizabeth "Betsy" Ross.
Edmund Edwards , he married married Elizabeth Miliken. Edith Edwards married Josiah Little. John Edwards is believed to have married a Frances (Fannie).
If anyone has information about this family .please contact me at linda.lef45@gmail.com.

Also looking. I think looking for a specific Edwards is like looking for a need in a haystack. I'm sure if you've done even a little research, just how many there are. Jeepers! My search is for Zedikiah Edwards, married twice, first wife Angelina 1 child Rial T Edwards ( found all of these) Second wife Priscilla Hight 10 children : William H, Joseph Ann, Richard Nathaniel, Elijah, Omega z., Herbert Wiley, Medicus, mary N., Armarilla (found all these both on internet and visited the cemertary they are in) I'm missing the connection from these people to the present. I'm trying to find out if the tree branches from Rial T. or if it branches from one of the other ten children. The connection is there some where but not sure how. If I start from this direction I can go as far as Ronald Clyde Edwards Sr. who lived late 1800's possibly. His son b-day 1914. So He R.C.Edwards was say 34 yrs old in 1914. Maybe these names ring a bell. Thanks Rena

Rial's siblings were William, Joseph, Richard, Omega, Willis, Norward.

Rial T. Edwards married Martha Pattie J. Hight, daughter of Richard Hight and Amarilla Duke. A 1900 census indicates that they had 11 children, all living. Based on the 1880 census and 1900 census, the children were (in order): Cora, Junius (my great-grandfather), Hilliard, Nestor, Willis, Pattie, Vosti (Vashti), Alice, Rial E., Mamie (Mayme), and Mary B.

My great-grandfather was Junius Jerome Edwards, born in Sandy Creek, NC. After the Civil War, Junius and his wife Elizabeth Wilkins came to California, where they settled in Fowler/Fresno. Their son Thomas Nestor Edwards was my grandfather. His sisters were Hazel Edwards McDonald and Helen Edwards ??. He married Helen Lucille Lamb.

Would love to hear from my NC cousins! Any relatives of this Edwards family, please contact me at jswiens@comcast.net.

Descendants of John Edwards and Ann Jones

According to family folklore, my great-grandparents emigrated from Wales in the early 1870s from their home village of Froncysyllte in North Wales. They had four children, three sons and a daugher, Annie, who was my grandmother (born Richmond, Va. in 1874). Ann died of "childbed fever" after the birth of the youngest son, Jesse, in the late 1870s. She is buried in Pittsburgh. John worked in the Homestead Works of USSteel, and later in life, remarried and moved to Frostburg, MD, where he died. I'm looking for the descendants of his sister, who lived in Philadelphia--and who wanted nothing to do with the alcoholic John. Also, I hope to find other Jones-Edwards relatives, descendants of the two older sons, who moved to Chicago, probably in the late '80s. Also, there are stories of an Aunt Angharad...and an Annie (Jones?), who lived in Oshkosh, WI. Unfortunately, I do not know the names of the two older sons--but I hope that some of this may ring a bell in some Illinois Edwards' memory.
You may contact me most easily by e-mail.
P.S. I have done extensive research and even hired a professional researcher to find the Jones/Edwards descendants from Fron, Wales--but all avenues have dead-ended so far.

In 1981 the Canada Post Office issued a stamp to recognize this important activist. She was born in Montreal and lived in Alberta. She became an expert on Canadian and Alberta laws affecting women and children and later advised lawyers and judges on these issues. She, along with four others initiated the "Five Persons Case."
.
I am a genealogist and stamp collector and was able to acquire several copies of the Stowe stamp release poster.

A copy of the stamp issue poster can be had for US$15.00 delivered.
Obituary: Frederick George Edwards (1853-1909)

FREDERICK GEORGE EDWARDS
BORN, OCTOBER 11, 1853.
DIED, NOVEMBER 28, 1909.

To some of us the musical outlook this month resembles a stricken battle-field. At the season when peace, joy and hope should reign our harps are tuned to notes of sadness. None of the losses it is our mournful duty to record affects us more severely than that of Frederick George Edwards, who was Editor of the Musical Times from April, 1897, up to the time of his death. He was seized with illness on November 18, and he paid his last visit to our office on that day. Pleurisy and pneumonia supervened, and on Sunday, November 28, heart failure carried him away in the presence of his wife, son, and daughter. He died at his residence, Canfield, Potters Bar, Middlesex.

The funeral took place at Potters Bar Cemetery on December 2, and was attended by many relatives and friends. Wreaths were sent by the Royal Academy of Music, the Association of North London Presbyterian Choirs, Sir George Martin, Mr. and Mrs. Ben Davies, and other musicians and personal friends. The Rev. Arthur Outram, Vicar of Christ Church, Little Heath, and the Rev. Dr. Monro Gibson conducted the service, which was held at the family residence. Sir Walter Parratt played In Memoriam music during evensong at St. George's Chapel, Windsor, on the day of the funeral, and memorial hymns were sung on the Sunday following, in many churches and chapels. At Christ Church, Westminster Bridge Road, one of Mr. Edwards's tunes was sung to the hymn, 'I will lay me down in peace,' the whole congregation standing.

Mr. Edwards came of an Essex family, and he was born in London on October 11, 1853. He was first educated at a Brixton Hill boarding-school and afterwards at Dedham Grammar School, and (in 1868) at King's College, London. In 1869 he entered a business house in the City of London. This afforded him an experience of orderly methods that was of great value to him in after life. Even while at school he had acquired some skill in organ-playing, and he now took lessons from Mr. William Beavan, of St. Mary's Church, Kilburn, and later from Mr. Henry Frost, organist of the Chapel Royal, Savoy. The young organist was soon able to deputise and even to give recitals, and in 1873 he played in Exeter Hall. In 1872 the Rev. Newman Hall invited Mr. Edwards to play the organ and train the choir in connection with some special services given in St. James's Hall. On July 20, 1873, as his very interesting diary records, he was invited to play at the Rev. Newman Hall's then famous Surrey Chapel (in Blackfriars Road), and on September 20 he was appointed organist. The singing in this circular chapel (long ago disused as a place of worship) was chiefly congregational, and as there were often between two and three thousand persons present the effect was inspiring.

The success of his work at Surrey Chapel, and the vista of teaching engagements it opened up, led Mr. Edwards, in 1875, to resolve to abandon business and to qualify himself more seriously for the profession by entering the Royal Academy of Music. At this institution, which has trained so many well-known British musicians, he studied organ-playing under Dr. Steggall and passed through the regular curriculum.

In July, 1876, Mr. Edwards migrated with the Surrey Chapel congregation to the newly-built Christ Church, Westminster Bridge Road. A fine organ by Lewis was erected in the new edifice, and was a luxury much appreciated by Mr. Edwards and many well-known solo players of the day.

On one occasion the late Right Hon. W. E. Gladstone attended a service. A few days later, at one of his celebrated breakfast parties, the Rev. Newman Hall being on one side and Dean Church on the other, the great statesman spoke with high approval of the organ accompaniments, and added that he thought organists were often prone to display themselves and their instruments rather than to assist the devotion of worshippers. The Rev. Newman Hall at once wrote down this testimony, and asked Mr. Gladstone to sign it, because such an opinion would greatly encourage his young organist. Mr. Gladstone expressed his surprise at the youthfulness of the player and granted the request, and the document is now amongst the numerous valuable autographs cherished by the family. The following is the text:

MEM.-The Rt. Hon. W. E. Gladstone, M.P., having attended worship at Christ Church, Westminster Road, on Sunday evening, June 2, I878, expressed his approbation of the practical nature of the performance of the organist-who seemed anxious to promote the efficiency of the worship, and not to exhibit his instrument or himself. (Signed) W. E. GLADSTONE.
June 13, 1878.

Increasing demands upon Mr. Edwards's time forced him to leave the Academy in 1877, but he continued to study counterpoint and composition under Mr. James Higgs. In 1879 he sought and obtained help of a far more enduring character by marrying Miss Lydia Jessie Williams. It is a very remarkable coincidence that his loving and loved companion, who now with resignation mourns her loss, was born on the same day and in the same year as himself. In his merry moods, and happily they were frequent, he would momentarily daze new friends by gravely stating that not only were he and his wife born on the same day, but by another remarkable coincidence they were married on the same day!

In 188I, Mr. Edwards resigned his organistship at Christ Church and accepted a like post at St. John's Wood Presbyterian Church, where the pastor was and still is the Rev. Dr. Monro Gibson. At this period he began those literary-musical studies which have been the chief accomplishment of his life. In 1885 he undertook the editorship of 'Common Praise,' and this book was published in I887. Later he wrote a series of articles on the Bronte family, which appeared in the British Weekly, In 1891 he contributed his first article to the Musical Times, then under the editorship of the late Dr. W. A. Barrett. It was on Mendelssohn's 'Hear my prayer,' and it revealed that trend in the direction of a deep appreciation of Mendelssohn's life and music that developed so strongly in later years. Another article from his facile pen appeared in the Musical Times for November, 1892, and was on musical settings of Tennyson's lyrics. Books written or edited about this period were 'The Romance of Psalter and Hymnal,' 'United Praise,' 'Musical Haunts in London,' 'Selected Psalms for Chanting,' 'A History of Mendelssohn's Elijah' (an absorbingly interesting and valuable book), sketches of the lives of Sir George Grove (with whom Mr. Edwards had a voluminous correspondence, all of which is methodically filed) and Dr. E. J. Hopkins. Meanwhile he was (from I887 to 1897) assisting to answer correspondents of The Musical Herald, and later he contributed many important articles, (the chief of which is that on Arthur Sullivan), to Leslie Stephen's monumental 'Dictionary of National Biography' and to Grove's 'Dictionary of Music and Musicians.' Another still later contribution to historical literature was his share in the Catalogue of the exhibition of the Musicians' Company. From 1906 until his death he contributed regularly to The Guardian, under the signature of 'Diapason,' a series of 'Notes on Church music.'

In 1905 Mr. Edwards resigned the organistship of St. John's Wood Presbyterian Church, in order to devote himself more completely to literary work. The esteem and deep regard felt for him by the congregation found some expression in handsome presentations made to him on his retirement. The twenty-four years' service at this place of worship was one of the happiest and proudest of Mr. Edwards's memories.

Last year he began what promised to become for him a new field of activity. He lectured before large audiences in Edinburgh and Glasgow on 'The importance of praise in the Church service.'

It may not be meet that, in these columns, all concerned during recent years in the production of this journal should express fully their admiration, respect and regard for their late chief. But at this juncture some personal tribute may be excused. They would like to record their appreciation of the ability and painstaking which Mr. Edwards brought to bear not only upon his own ample contributions, but upon the general ordering and tone of the journal. In his onerous and often difficult work he displayed a consuming passion for accuracy. A slip passed over in the stress of 'making-up' would occasion him positive distress. But the strain of the work was generally pleasantly mitigated by his lively and humorous sallies. He was an incorrigible punster, and could through his whimsicalities keep the ball of conversation rolling to the accompaniment of innocent laughter. He was far from being enthusiastic over the development of modern music. Handel, Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Mendelssohn, the hymn-tune writers, and the English Cathedral school had for him much greater fascination. He did not compose for publication, and he often deplored the quality and quantity of the output of musicians less conscious of their limitations than he was of his own.

In the Musical Times he will be best remembered by his educationally suggestive interviews with musical celebrities, and the long series of articles on cathedrals, churches, and educational institutions upon which, over the signature 'Dotted Crotchet,' he bestowed so much care and erudition. A genial comrade, an exemplar of thoroughness and accuracy, an indefatigable worker with high ideals of duty, less perhaps to himself than to others, his memory will always be cherished by a large circle of co-workers and friends. No separate photograph of Mr. Edwards being available, we present as a supplement a family group showing Mr. F. G. Edwards on the left, his father in the centre, and his son on the right.

Source: The Musical Times, Vol. 51, No. 803, (Jan. 1, 1910) pp.9-11

Edwards family, Australia

I am seeking information relating to the Edwards family in Queensland Australia. My paternal grandfather, Leslie Arthur Edwards, was born in Camowheel, Queensland c1910. I believe my great grandfather was also born in Camowheel. But at this point it becomes confusing. At some stage my great grandfather took the surname Clarke, I have not been able to find out why. His children were given the option of changing to the name Edwards or keeping Clarke. The only name I have for my great grandfather is "Malangy" Clarke, I am not sure of the spelling or even if this is actually his name or a nickname as I am still trying to obtain birth records. Does anyone recognise this Edwards/Clarke in their family tree?

Daniel Edwards born 3rd May 1859 in Penyfai, Bridgend, Glamorgan, South Wales

I believe Daniel Edwards might have emigrated to America. I can find him in the 1871 Wales census - aged 12. The family were then living at Zoar Place, Maesteg. There is no trace of him in the 1881 census though I have found two or three Daniel Edwards who were living in Pennsylvania.

His parents were William Edwards and Margaret (nee Rees) and he had sisters Johannah, Mary, Margaret, Esther and Jennet.

If anyone has any information to share, I would be very grateful.

Linda
