Hi, I live in West Lothian Scotland. My Family came from Unst, Shetland and related to Gilbert Edwardson. The family moved south early 1900 and my Father, Hugh findlay Edwardson was born in Oakbank, Midlothian in April 1910. I have no real information to hand regarding family history but would be interested in hearing from you if you think you are from the same family. I had a sister called Thomasina Edwardson!!

Regards

Robert Edwardson (Bobby)

I have all of the information about Obert's life on Sugar Island. I am offering to share everything I know about him, including countless photos. If you are interested, contact me via my personal email (m_polczynski@charter.net).

One of the heirlooms that was passed down to me was a pocket watch that was owned by his mother. It is currently being restored by a professional watchmaker.

Let me know if you are interested in learning more about Obert and his family.

Hi:
I'm sorry, but I can't assist you with the information you are looking for.

I searched the internet and could not locate a Sugar Island Resort. There is a Sugar Lake & Resort in Grand Rapids, Minnesota.

You might want to try the white pages for Edwardsons in Wyandotte, Pennington Co, MN. Or if any of the other listers may have other resources for you.

I don't live in Minnesota so I can't do any research for you. Thank you.--k

I am the step-grandson of Obert. He was my only grandpa and father figure. I lived with him and grandma Bea during the summer at their resort on Sugar Island. I have dozens of pictures and hundreds of childhood memories. I got to know 'uncle Gene' (Gilman) because he lived in Wyandotte too. Please contact me, as I am looking to connect with his biological family before I pass on.

*NOTE: I am not related to the persons listed in this bio.

HISTORY OF THE EARLY SETTLERS IN ROSEAU CO, MN: 1885-1910
VOL 1, PAGE 50
BERNT EDWARDSON - BIO
Bernt and Inga Edwardson and their 10 year old daughter, Ida, immigrated fra Oslo, Norway about 1894. They came first to Anoka, MN, where they worked on a dairy farm for two years.

Wishing to have land of their own, they moved on, and homesteaded two miles west of Fox, in Ross Township. Here they built a one-room log cabin. Bernt, like many other of the men, worked in the harvest fields of North Dakota in the fall, and in the woods in the winter. Inga was at home caring for the children, raising a large garden and milking a few cows.

On 10 November 1910,Bernt passed away and Inga was left to bring up the family of eight children. They had many hardships. In about 1914, a tornado swept through and took the roof off their cabin and uprooted many trees. Neighbors rallied to help raise the roof again.

Inga passed away 3 March 1946 at age 84 years. She had then lived on the homestead for 50 years. The Edwardsons were members of the Lutheran Church.

They had eight children:
Ida Edwardson JOHNSON
Emma Edwardson JOHNSON
Bertha Edwardson HANSON
Alfred EDWARDSON
Nellie Edwardson BRAATEN
Belmer EDWARDSON
Gilman EDWARDSON
Obert EDWARDSON

Actually, your great grandfather Ole Edwardson is also my great grandfather, and he was the father of my grandfather Edward. Ole was around 60 years old when he married your great grandmother Hannah Branting. There is more info on Ole on my website www.larry.linehan.com (click on family tree, also family photos). There is also info on Ole at www.findagrave.com with a photo of his headstone at Dry Creek Cemetery. Would be interested in comparing info. There was another great granddaughter of Ole and Hannah who provided me with much information. I'll have to look up her name--my old computer crashed last year and I've been scrambling to reassemble information! Regards, Larry

The trick was to find WHEN the family left Norway and some strong estimates for the various birthyears for each of the Norwegian born -- compared US census entries for Edward/Edwin Edwardson and his son Paul (nice names not overly common in Norway).
The family left Norway in 1888 from the port of Trondheim and stated their destination to be Muskegon. They are listed as being from "Vikten" Norway -- which is actually Vikna area (in Nærøy district) of Nord-Trøndelag, Norway.
http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbas...

This is probably the younger 'Edwin' in the 1865 Norwegian census-
http://www.rhd.uit.no/folketellinger/ftliste_e.aspx?ft=1865&...

http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~norway/articles.html
Watch wheel cutter for Thomas and for Hunts wtach repair. So probably that is why Robert was with them and why there have been marriages between the 2 fafmilies.
Chris and Liz. I have information about Mary Jaffrey Edwardson. She was my great great grandmother. She married David Pierce around 1890 or 1891 and I hoping that you, Chris, are able to fill in the details opf that particular marriage date or where I could get that record. David and Mary had two boys named, Glenn Martin Pierce and Walter Emery Pierce. David died in 1894 or 1895 I believe and Mary Jaffrey Pierce died inthe early 1920's when she moved up to New York City with her two sons. She was a cook for a private family as her profession.

My great great grandmother is Mary Jaffrey Edwardson who married David Pierce in Cambridge MA. I have very little information on David, but have a good deal, probably the same stuff you have about the edwardson side. I have all the stuff from the David Pierce-Mary Jaffrey Edwardson line up until now if you'd like it and would be more than happy to share with you what I have if you could help me out too. Let me know.

My Edwardson family came from Malpas, Prescot and Widnes. Here is what I have so far. Thomas Edwardson born 1811 in Maplas married Isabella born 1809 in Scotland. Children Thomas (Pendleton or Prescot 1844) and Fanny (Pendleton 1848). Think they had an older brother William. Thomas 1 was a farm laborer. Thomas 2 married Elizabeth Hill born in Widnes 1847. Children Thomas (Widnes 1868) Mary (Widnes 1870) Ada (Widnes 1874) Gertrude (Widnes 1877) Henry (Widnes 1876) Alice Maude (Widnes 1881). Thomas 2 was a wheelewright apprentice but went on to own a Mineral Water company in Widnes. Thomas 3 was a watchmaker and Henry took over the busines. Henry married Alice Hill born 1893 in Widnes. Children were Harry (Widnes 1916) Maude Adele (Widnes 1922) Dorothy (Widnes 1925).

I am researching the Edwardsons of Prescot (some of whom moved to Widnes c.1900). I know there are a lot listed on the various census and have confirmed many are related. If anone can help me fill in the missing pieces I would be grateful. I have just sent for the marriage cert. of William T Edwardson and Eliza Hayes (1858) and am keen to trace further back as there are records of Edwardsons in the area as far back as the 1600s.

His father was Thomas Edwardson born around 1902, died 10 May 1968. Thomas Edwardson was married to Eva Ross. I am looking for Thomas Edwardson's history. His dad was also named Thomas Edwardson or Edvardsson so I am told. I am not sure which one of them came over from Norway. If anyone can relate to these names with further infomation, that would be awesome. Thanks all.

Hi...I saw your msg and I don't know any Norwegians but I am more curious about the surname Soini. Did you marry into a Finnish family? There have been Finns that settled in Norway occasionally. I've seen transcriptions of their obituaries that state born in Norway, but they were of Finnish descent. I'm related to Eriika Liisa Martintytär Soini born 1832 in Siikajoki Finland (west coast of Finland). Let me know if there is any connection. Thanks and good luck in your search.

Hi Rudy,

I'm so glad to hear from a new relative on my Edwardson side. I didn't know Mary's husband's name. When I was up at the Massachusetts Archives, I found these two entries in the "Index to Marriages in Massachusetts 1891-95":

Edwardson, Mary Jeffey, Boston, 1891, Vol. 417, Page 155
Edwardson, Mary Jeffry, Belmont, 1891, Vol. 416, Page 83

Never followed up to find out who she married. Thanks!

My GG grandfather David was Mary's sister, and they were both children of Andrew Edwardson and Barbara Sinclair in Scotland's Shetland Islands. Andrew and Barbara had 13 children, and so far as I know, David, Mary, and John Edwardson all came to Massachusetts in the late 1880s.

I got a good bit of my Shetland Edwardsons history from Tony Gott's excellent Shetland Family History website. I also have my own family tree here on Ancestry.com entitled "Williams/Arsenault," though I really need to upload an updated version. I've made a lot of discoveries since April!

I would love to have your descendants of Mary Jaffrey Edwardson material, and I 'd be happy to bring you up to speed on your Edwardson relatives. I see you have a Georgetown email address; I'm not far away in Baltimore. Feel free to email me off the board and we can talk some more.

Thanks a lot,
Chris Williams

Re: Gilbert Edwardson

Liz,

I am almost positive that they are related. My GG uncle Gilbert's father was David Edwardson (b.1868, in Lerwick), and the Gilbert you're referring to was David's brother. They were both sons of Andrew Edwardson (b.1825, in Unst) and Barbara Sinclair (also b.1825, in Unst).

You've probably seen the 1920 census record showing him married to Elizabeth C.; it also says that Gilbert emigrated to the US in 1863. He is also shown in the 1880 census married to Elizabeth C., living in Calumet, Michigan. The ages are a little off, but everything else seems to match, so I'm pretty confident of this one.

As to Mary Jaffray Edwardson, in a recent trip to the Massachusetts State Archives, I found a reference to a Mary Jeffey Edwardson and a Mary Jeffry Edwardson in the 1891 Marriage Index, so I think it's pretty likely that one of them is her. Massachusetts is where most of my Edwardsons settled.

Let me know how this fits with what you have. We probably have a good bit to share.

Chris WIlliams
Baltimore, MD
