Could you please check your book for John Lewis ELLS. Per the 1860 census, he was born in 1829 in Bibb County, Georgia. He is probably the son of Nathan ELLS since the only ELLS/EELLS listed in Bibb County in 1830 is a Nathan with a child the right age to be my John Lewis ELLS. There is also a Nathaniel EELLS listed in Bibb in 1840, again with a child the right age to be my John. My John Lewis ELLS moved from GA to NY because he was living in Troy, NY in 1850, married to Margaret (RICKARDS) less than a year. (This suggests a connection to the NY EELLS.) He moved back to Georgia between 1856 and 1860 because he and Margaret are listed in Savannah, Chatham, GA in the 1860 census, with their two oldest children, both b. NY. He then moved to Augusta, Richmond, GA about 1861, since he enlisted in the Confederacy from there. He was still in Augusta in 1870, with my great-grandmother (Jefferson Davis ELLS) added to the family. They moved to Baltimore, Baltimore, MD by 1880 (consistent with your possible death location of Baltimore) and then to Easton, Talbot, MD where he died in 1889.
John Lewis’ father, Nathan ELLS / Nathaniel EELLS, appears to be Nathaniel EELLS, b. 1798 in Catskill, New York, the son of Nathaniel EELLS b. 1773 in Stonington, CT and Hannah HOYT and descended from John EELLS, immigrant before 1640. (NATHANIEL6 EELLS, NATHANIEL5, NATHANIEL4, NATHANIEL3, SAMUEL2, JOHN1) Looking for confirmation in your Eells book!
THANKS! Jan
