Donna,
Thanks for your note. My father was Edward J. Egan of New Orleans. His cousin, Kathrine (his father's brother's daughter) married G. Gernon Brown. I don't know all the details, but Gernon Brown was a well known football coach in New Orleans who started the NORD (New Orleans Recreation Department)Program (~1930?) which sponsored sports and other programs for children. He is buried in the Egan tomb in Metairie cemetery, just outside of New Orleans. Kathrine and his daughter Blaize are buried there also.

John Egan
egan2@comcast.net

EGAN in Illinois, USA

I'm looking for surviving EGANs from Illinois. My GrGm was Mary Ann EGAN. She immigrated ca. 1851, and was in Ohio by 1862, when she married my GrGf Lawrence DALY. I have all the family information on DALYs, but not much about the EGANs.

What I have: Mary was born ca. 1835. She died in Carlisle, Ohio 1922. She had a relative named John who came to visit her in 1911. A newspaper reports him as John EGAN of Joliet, Illinois. I don't know his relationship to Mary, but I believe he was a brother. On Mary's death cert. it lists her father as "Pat", but mother's name is "unknown". I think that John may have had children, but I can't find him on the 1910 Census, and I can't narrow down a death date for him.

The IL Egans worked in the prison system there. They also had ties to Chicago. So, if there are any EGANs within this list who are Ireland or Illinois born, and you even think you might have an Ohio connection, I'd appreciate hearing from you.

Best Regards,
Trish

Egan. Reilly/Riley marriage

My great great grandparents were Edward Reilly/Riley and Margaret Egan. All I know about them is that both were born in Ireland. I don't know where they were married.
My great grand mother, Mary Ellen Reilly/Riley (or with an O') was born in New Jersey or New York on August 15, 1866. She later married Charles D. Knight and died in Brooklyn on February 13, 1928.
Mary Ellen had a sister Anna or Annie Riley who was born in New York in 1873. Anna married John T. Slater.
Edward and Margaret are my biggest brick wall. I haven't been able to find anything. One of the biggest problems is that I don' know if Mary Ellen and Anna had siblings, which makes identification via the census difficult.
Any help would be most appreciated. Thanks so much.
Egan family of Clooneen Upper, Tipperary, Ireland

I am researching the family name of Egan and have traced my ancestry back to Daniel Egan and Margaret Egan (nee Clerehan).

The Griffiths Valuation of circa 1850 shows that Daniel Egan was the occupier of 137 acres of land owned by a Capt. Warrington in Clooneen Upper, County Tipperary, Ireland.

The death certificate of Margaret Egan (birth date unknown, died December 1875) reveals the following children:
Mary Egan -
Patrick Egan - baptized July 1833 died June 1911
John Egan -
Michael Egan - baptized January 1837, date of death unknown, but sometime prior to 1875
Edward Egan -baptized October 1840, died August 1920
Judy Egan - baptized February 1843, date of death unknown but sometime prior to 1875
Daniel Egan - baptized January 1845, died April 1865
James Egan - baptized August 1849, died October 1883

The dates of birth have been confirmed by the baptismal records of the Roman Catholic Church Parish of Cloughjordan, which is to the north of Clooneen Upper. These records commenced around 1830 and do not show the baptisms of Mary or John or the marriage of Daniel and Margaret. These events may have occurred in another parish or before records commenced. Death dates where indicated have been confirmed against the Australian records.

The death certificate of Margaret Egan shows that at the time of her death in 1875 the children Judy and Michael were deceased

Margaret Egan and four of her children, Patrick, Edward, Daniel and James, have been traced to Melbourne, Australia. They settled in the suburb of Richmond. Shipping records have been checked and it would appear the Margaret and three of her sons, Daniel, Edward and James, arrived in Melbourne in March 1862 aboard the Marco Polo. I have been unable to locate when and where Patrick arrived in Australia.

I have been unable to trace her husband Daniel or the other known children Mary, John, Michael and Judy in Australia. It may be that her husband Daniel died prior to Margaret coming to Australia.

Hello there,

Yes, we have spoken before however, the Patrick Norton (died 9th May 1964) we have is my gggrandfather. He came out to Aus in 1840 with his wife Mary Egan with 6 of their children. They had another 3 here, one of which was John - my ggrandfather. One of the other children was Bridget. I have her marrying a James Jeffreys in 1856 in Goulbur.

Now, this is by no means a sure thing as the marriage cert doesn't give parents names.

I think we have a connection in that Patrick Norton matches. What do you think? I would be more than happy to share info if so.

Cheers,
Julie

Hi

I have just started tracing my family history and was excited to read your messages re Williams, Egan.

My father was Patrick Tynan born 17/3/1923 in Oswestry. His parents were George David Tynan and Violet Agnes Williams. Violet's mother was Mary Margaret Williams who married Charles Egan (tailor and journeyman) on 18/2/1914.Mary was the daughter of Mary Williams (formerly Kennedy) and Thomas Williams.

I think this is correct although I am currently finding everything very confusing. I suppose this all makes us some sort of relatives??? I am deperate to gain further knowledge and would be grateful for any further information that you could pass on to me.

Kind Regards

Frances

This does sound like the same family. Our family comes from William Egan, son of Kieran & Julia Egan. Perhaps William & your father, Michael Egan, were brothers? I would love to see what other information you have. I have information from a relative here in the US that lives in New Jersey, but has visited Birr many times and knows many relatives. Do you have any information on other children of Kieran & Julia and of the parents of Kieran Egan or Julia Dooley/Dooly. I have seen it spelled both ways. Thank you so much.

Hi Jo Ann,

Thank you for the response. We have found Joanne. Oddly, a man in England directed us to Egan's living in FL. The man in FL was an Uncle of Jim's. He has since passed on....he connected us with Joanne.

I find it 'interesting' that there are Egan siblings with the same given names as the Joanne and James I/we were researching!

James Egan remains to be listed as MIA.

I and others keep the faith that one day we will learn that Jim's status is changed and that his remains are laid to rest below his marker in Arlington.

Patty
