Edward, Syrus Egge

Edward Syrus Egge, Edward, or Sy as he was often called, passed away quietly September 26, 2007 having enjoyed a fulfilling life of 91 years. Born on November 28, 1915 in Plainview, Texas, he came to Los Angeles at age one and remained in the county for the rest of his life. He graduated from Fremont High in LAA. where he aided his shop teachers, using skills his dad taught him at an early age. In 1942, Ed married Gwendolyn and during their 65 years o f marriage, they raised a family, traveled to almost all the states, worked with scout and church youths, square danced and bowled for numerous years making many close, life-long friends. Ed held the rank of Cheif Machinist Mate in the Coast Guard during WWII. He often talked of his experiences in the Philippines as well as his service at the Lighthouse on the breakwater of San Pedro. Ed was well known throughout Long Beach where, in 1955, he opened Egge Marine Service, an engine repair business still run b y his son. Ed enjoyed being with his family and friends and loved the outdoors, traversing the streams and hills of the High Sierras, fishing, hunting and just appreciating God's creation. Ed touched many lives with his friendly smile, quiet nature, interest in others and passion for life. He was gentle, quick to lend a hand, cheerful and optimistic and most of all, kind and loving with everyone he met. He will be missed by his family and friends and his legacy is that he will be carried in the hearts of all who were fortunate to know him. Edward Syrus Egge is survived by his wife, Gwen; daughter and son-in-law, Roberta and John; son and daughter-in-law, Ed and Nancy; 6 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren and 6 great great grandchildren. Service will be held at 1pm Tuesday, October 2nd at Forest Lawn, Cypress. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donating to City of Hope, Downey United Methodist Church, Glazier Elementary School Science Camp or your favorite charity. Forest Lawn, Cypress 800-204-3131
