My earlier note said that there were two Adam Egges who, in my view, could have been the son of Sara (Busch) and Jacob Egge of Reading and Allentown, PA -- one Adam born 1815 in PA, the other Adam born 1833 in PA. Well, based on a key item found this morning, I'm ready to say that of those two, the 1815 Adam is the only one still standing as your candidate. So unless there is some other "Adam Egge" born 1810 - 1829 in Berks or Lehigh PA, you've got your match.

What did we find? In the 1910 / 1920 censuses, the 1833 Adam Egge is living with relatives in Allentown -- he's an aging uncle at the Lefevre home. In a book on the Knauss family of PA, I've found Adam 1833, and he's the son of Salome (Knauss) Egge, who married a second time to a man whose last name was -- ta da - Lefevre. So this is the WRONG Adam for your purposes. The book's wording, and its web address are as follows:

53. Children of Salome, born 1808, daughter of John G.
Knauss :

By first marriage :
Adam Egge, born July 25, 1833.

By second marriage :
Henry E. LeFevre, born Nov. 3, 1839.

54. Children of Henry E. LeFevre :

Annie L., born Oct. 28, 1865.

Henry E.. Jr., born April 25, 1867; married Ida Giering (6).

http://www.archive.org/stream/historygenealogy00knau/history...
It's possible that he's connected. There appear to be two Adam Egges who could fit the bill as the Adam, the son born to Sara (Busch) and Jacob Egge, who were born and married in Berks Co, Pa and moved to Allentown, Lehigh in the range of 1812-16. One is the Adam Egge you cite, born ca 1815 in PA (acc to censuses 1850, 1870 and 1880) and married to Sarah, b 1824 (acc to censuses 1850 and 1870, which have her born in PA, and 1880, which shows her b in DE). They lived in IN in 1850, and IA in 1870 & 1880. The other Adam Egge was born 1833 and censuses show him mostly living in Philadelphia, except the 1900ish ones which show him living with relatives on Allentown. I lean toward your 1815 Adam, as 1833 would mean Sara Busch Egge's was 44 when he as born. But let's do a little more digging before making the final call -- and perhaps someone else might have info to add to this discussion?

I am looking for information on my great-grandfather, Charles Egge. I would like to know whether he remarried and had anymore children after he divorced my great-grandmother, Florence Mariner Egge and also where he is buried. He and Florence had three children (daughter b./d. unk, Margaret b. 1919 d. 1989, and Marion b./d. 1923) and divorced in 1930. Family gossip is that he remarried and had a son but I can find nothing on him until his death in Rock Island, IL on June 23, 1937.

Thank you, in advance, for your help.

It's certainly feasible that he's part of the extended Egge clan which emigrated from Germany and settled in central PA. Circumstantial evidence includes the fact that one of the censuses in ancestry.com notes that his father was born in Prussia (Germany), also there were a surprising number of male Egges in the Reading / Berks, Lancaster, Allentown / Lehigh areas 1750 - 1900 (plenty of potential relatives), and thirdly that the name Adam was used several times in Egge generations earlier than your ancestor. The single family line that I've been working on, though, does not include any "adam"s, so I don't have the answer for you - but it seems to me that the chances would seem petty good that there is some connection to the extended Egge clan. I encourage you to keep digging!

Hi,

My name is Robert (Bob) C Egge Jr, born in Allentown in 1955. I curently live in Dayton, OH.

Charles Heeser Egge is my great, great grandfather. I was working on my geneology and was baffled, but Mr. Ned Moore helped me make the connection. Charles Hesser Egge did have a son named William - my great grandfather. William was born in Iowa. William had four children - Anna M born 1892 (my great aunt whom I lived with a short time), Charles E born 1894 who died in the Spanish flu epedemic in 1918-1919, Raymond W born 1896 whom I believe is buried in Frederick, MD, and John H, my grandfather, borm 1897.

FYI . . . Charles Hesser Egge, William S Egge, John H Egge and Anna M Egge are buried side-by-side in Greenwood Cemetery, 2010 Chew St, Allentown, PA.

I hope to make it back there this fall to take photos of as many Ege/Egge graves as I can find in 3-4 days.

If you have any info, plese forward. Thanks.

Bob Egge
tdcegge@yahoo.com
robert.egge@wpafb.af.mil

Yes, to all questions. Rev. Walter EGGE was my husbands' grandfather, Walter Howard. His headstone and Emma (wife) is in Allentown cemetery. My son Sam Egge poses with them last fall. If you would like a copy of the photo, just send your email and I will forward. I have been emailing with a Tina Egge also connected to the family. I have been looking for my papers which belonged to my husbands aunt Helen Egge Murray. My husband Walter B. was named after his dad W. Blair and our son is Walter B. There are also numerous Walters in my family and I am beginning to be tired of the name...:)) Val Jack Egge eggenest@gilanet.com

Yes, Ralph Thomas Egge was the son of William Jacob Egge, Jr., who is one of the three people listed in the newspaper article to which you refer.

Your inquiry got me to go to dig out my Egge research material. I see a John Egge as a brother of William Jacob Egge SENIOR, not junior. John was born 1808 to Sarah and Jacob Egge in Reading , died 1897. I do not have a list of the children of John Egge, so there may be other Johns later.

This 1808 John's brother, WIlliam Jacob Egge SENIOR, had five children, one of whom was William Jacob Egge JUNIOR and one of whom was Anna Egge, born 1849 and died in the 1930's. My father-in-law knew Anna, and called her "great-aunt Annie."

Might either of these be the "John" and "Anna" you mention?

If you want me to help piece your line together, I'd need names and dates of birth (as close as you can make them) for your Egge grandfather and Egge great-grandfather.

Best wishes.

Was Ralph Thomas Egge 1884-1979 the son of William Jacob Egge Jr?

Did he have a brother John and a sister Anna?

I have a newspaper article about William J. Egge (born 1820 and son of Jacob Egge) and his life in Allentown. At the end of the article it lists his children . . . Rev Charles Egge, William Egge (Jr), and the Rev Walter Egge.

It gives an address for William Egge (Jr) as 512 N. 5th St in Allentown PA. I lived there as a child until my dad (Bethlehem Steel) got transferred to Illinois and then Minnesota. The house belonged to my great Aunt Anna and my grandfather John.

I found an Ellen Halvorsen born January 8, 1826 in Lier, the son of Halvor Gunderson and Mari Abrahamsdatter. I found it on the new family history library website, it has an index of Norwegian records. I also found it on the digitalarkivet site, but I am not sure where I found it, that site is kind of hard to negotiate, and keeps switching between English and Norwegian. I do understand a little Norsk, but it is still challenging!
Have you looked for an obituary for Hans in the Washburn paper?

Hello Barb, Thanks for your reply. I am familiar with the Digitalarkivet for census information. I have not been able to delve into the church records, though I think Frogner was the church area involved. Do you have any strategies on delving into 1848-1854? Or for that matter, pre 1826?

I believe my great, great grandfather Elen or Ellen Halvorsen (sometimes Halvordsen) was born 8 Jan 1826 or 1828. I am unsure if Elen or Ellen died in Lier or came to America at a late age because I have found some close names. My verified search backward in this branch ends with Ellen of Vestre Egge.

I have still been unable to find details of Hans' death in 1907.

I found the family of Ellen Halvordsen in the 1865 census in Lier, Buskerud. He was listed as being 40 years old, and his birthplace was Lier. His wife Ann Sorine Andersdatter was 43, birthplace kristiansand. Three children were listed, Maren Kristine, age15, Marie age 14, and Hans, age 12. They grew cattle, sheep, barley, oats, and potatoes.
Are you aware of the site www.digitalarkivet.no that has the Norwegian census and other databases?
The best way to find the parents, or at least the father of Ellen, is in the marriage records. That database has parish records, but I didn't find any yet that would be early enough. Death records usually do not list the parents.

Thank you Barb.

Hans Egge's correct name was Hans Ellensen, born in Lier, Buskerud in 1855. He originally arrived in the US at Alpena, MI and followed lumber jobs to Ashland/Washburn, WI. Oral tradition passed down through the generations attributed his death to a lumbering accident with in Bayfield or Ashland County or St. Louis in MN. I cannot find a record of this. Thanks. You at least have narrowed down the dates for me.

If there is anyone with specialty in Norge, I am now searching for the parents of Hans' father Ellen (Elen, Allan) Havorsen (Halvords.) from Egge Vestre, Lier, Buskerud. Any help would be appreciated.

Hello again, Egge relatives. Wonder if you might be able to assist me in something. I mentioned in our earlier correspondence that no one had yet applied for DAR membership connecting to our ancestor Abraham Henry. We're willing to make that first application, as I've got plenty on his service in the Am Rev. Now we need some help on bio data. Here are some of the things that would be key to support additional research here: Can you tell me in what PA town / county Abraham was born? Where did he live after the war? What was his wife's name? Are you willing to share with me a copy of the Bible pages you mentioned, which show dates for Abraham and daughter Margaret (and may reference marriage to Sherer?) Any help would be MOST appreciated! - Edward

I have read with much interest this discussion and it brings me to wonder about the Adam Egge that is my g-g-grandfather. I have only to trace him back to 1850 at which time the census said that he was born in PA about 1815. He married Sarah Talley of OH and had seven children in Ohio, Indiana and Iowa. Could Adam be any relation to those in this thread?

Barb,

My direct relative was Magnus Johnson, his wife was Ingebourg Larson they lived in Washburn, Wisc. during the era you are looking at. I have been there many times researching. Inge's father was Iver Larson who had a boarding house in 1900 and had one Isac Egge or Eggen staying with them.

Also my people went to the same church as yours, but I found my families records at the Court House and the cemetary was at the top of the hill.

Gary

my inforamation is less than helpful, I'm afraid. My grandmother was Sophie Lee Engen, her mother was Christina Egge whose parents were born in Norway. Christina was an accomplished seamstress in spite of an arm withered by polio. My grandmother Sophie had a sister Carrie who later married Paul Miller who became a professor of horiculture at the U of Oregon. Christina, Sophie and Carrie lived in Dane County WI I beleive with the Egge grandparents. Sophie married Oscar A. Engen(parents Ole and Anna (Venden) Engen)they had 3 children and last lived in Viola WI Sophie spoke often of her Egge cousins but I do not recall the first names of cousins or her grandparents who spoke little English. She did not speak of her father that I recall but I vaguely feel his name may have been Robert. My e mail is m_lee_mck3@wqest.net. I have not started researching in earnest yet. I would welcome any info and would be glad share what I know. thank you M. Lee

Val - My daughter, who's a member of the DAR, paid for some file research at the DAR re: our John Bush. It turns out that many of the service references you cite in your May 31 note are actually the record of another (different) John Bush of PA. The DAR researcher says these service records, such as the Ensign Captain in the Continental Line, are not accepted now by the DAR for our John Bush, and the DAR has added a note of the error to these references on the file copies of folks who applied earlier as a descendant of his. Our John Bush, the one who married Catherine Leinbach, DID serve in a distinguished capacity, as a Lieutenant under Captain Timothy Jaynes of 7th Class, Northampton County Militia, PA. But not as an officer in the Continental Line.

The church they attended was the Norwegian Lutheran church, now known as Christ Lutheran. It is in Washburn, Bayfield, Wisconsin. I borrowed the microfilm of records from the lutheran archives. What I have found was that Hans married his first wife in Norway, then emmigrated to Michigan around 1880. His wife died around 1884, and he married Rise Johnson Rod in Washburn in 1889. I found that marriage in the Wisconsin Historical Society pre 1907 vital records. I didn't find their marriage listed in the church records, but there were very few listed each year, and I'm wondering if maybe all of them were not registered in the church book. Hans had several children, Arthur, Anna, Sigurd, Gyoa? I think the first two were children with his first wife. Hans' death is listed in the church records. It says he died November 6, 1907 and was buried on November 10. He was 52, lived in Washburn, and was born in Norway. That is all the info on the record. I do not know if Hans and Rise are related to my family, but they were listed as sponsors for the baptism of my grandma and one of her siblings. My great grandfather was John H. Johnson, and I don't know his parents, but I thought that perhaps he and Rise were related. It's possible they just knew each other from church. I also have not found any marriage record for my great grandparents, records were hit and miss back then.

I don't know anything about Hans, but he was listed as a sponsor on my grandma's baptism certificate from Washburn, dated February 1898.It was written in Norwegian.Mrs. Hans Egge was also listed. I don't know if he was a relative, or perhaps a member of their church. My grandma's parents were John and Mattie Johnson.

My father was Willett Ellsworth Egge Jr born 1921 in Allentown and died 1974. I am contacting a cousin that will give me the dates of births and deaths of the others. His father was Willett Ellsworth Egge Sr. born circa 1900 and died circa 1966-67 I believe his father was Irving. I believe also that Willett Sr had a sister Estelle and a brother Harley? I remember them as a child.

I have a cousin in Allentown that is to get back to me with the family tree she has been working on. She used to work in the courthouse and did extensive research while there. I live in the Shenandoah Valley in VA. Yes Egge is considered Dutch ancestry more than German. If you google Egge there is a university in Holland named Egge. I was told that those Egges and Eges are not supposed to be connected, That is why it is important to know which boat they did come over on. One bit of interesting information that may help everyone piece things together,,,I recall my father making mention of the Egges being involved with the transport of the Liberty Bell when it was moved to Allentown to be hidden. Maybe we can all make some connection there also.

My wfie's father is Dean Egge, son of Ralph Thomas Egge, so we're clearly barking up the same family tree. Our draft of the family tree shows one difference at the end of sequence you note. We show the sequence, going back, as Ralph Thomas Egge - William Jacob Egge, Jr -- William Jacob Egge - Jacob Egge (1782) - Jacob Egge (1745) - George-Michael Egge (1715) - Bernard Ege / Egge (1688). Your tree concludes at Adam Egge after Jacob 1745 -- wondering what documentation you have of his connection?

I am tracing Egges. My wifes grandmother was Althea Egge (Haines) and I have the tree as Ralph Thomas - William Jacob Egge Jr - William Jacob Egge -Jacob Egge - Jacob Egge - Adam Egge? Does this make sense to anyone? Anymore info would be appreciated.

Bernard Ege 1688 to Jacob Egge 1782 Berks Co / Reading / Allentown PA

I. BERNARD EGE, b 1688 in Delbrum, Wuerrtemberg, Germany -- emigrated to the US in 1738 with his four sons. Among his sons was:

II. GEORGE-MICHAEL EGE b 1715, Delbrum, Wuerrtemberg, Germany,
emigrates w/ father, settled in Philadelphia, married Anna Catherine Holz, and is known to have fought in the French and Indian War. Among his children are three sons: Jacob (b 1745), George (b 1748) and Michael (b, 1753). The father, George-Michael Ege, died relatively young, in 1759. After his death, his widow sends the three young boys to live and study at Charming Forge, the Berks County, PA mansion of their prosperous uncle, Baron Henry Stiegel.

III. JACOB EGE b 11 Jan 1745 in Germantown, PA (Philadelphia area).
He was one of the three Ege brothers who were sent to Charming Forge in Berks County (where Reading is). His great-granddaughter, Annie (Egge) Huber, daughter of William Jacob Egge (b 1820), recalls him talking glowingly about his time at Charming Forge when the Baron was in the peak of his life and finances.

IV. JACOB EGE (later Jacob EGGE) b. 14 Jun 1782 in Reading, Berks, PA marries Sara Busch on Feb 7, 1808 at Schwarzwald Reformed Church, Exeter Township, Berks Co. Like his father, he spent time at Charming Forge, but during the time his Uncle George Ege owned it (after Baron Stiegel sold it). His granddaughter Annie (Egge) Huber recalls him reminiscing about his enjoyable times at the manor house, and refers to Charming Forge as the "ancestral home" of the Eges in Pennsylvania. In any event, this Jacob Ege moves to Allentown, adds an extra "g" to his last name (Egge), starts Allentown's first brick-making company (W. J. Egge Co) which is carried on by his son (William Jacob Egge) and grandson (William Jacob Egge, Jr.). Jacob Egge died 2 Apr 1869, buried in Union Cemetery in Allentown.

Say, Edward, I thot' I'd send Walt's cousins name, etc. She is the daughter of the oldest child of Walter Howard Egge. She is: Nancy Murray, 12 Charles Ave., Selinsgrove, Penna. 17870 . Since none of the Egge's are close, in any sense, we don't have any other info. on her. She supposedly has a book about the EGGE family and she may have further information. Our family members are DAR/SAR members because of John Bush. Val

That's very helpful - many thanks. I think you're correct in believing his name is Abrham Henry, not the other way around. His daughter's last name is one clue, but also on the "Henry" message board in Ancestry.com there are a few references to folks trying to find infomration on an Abraham Henry born around 1755 in York County, PA. So I think we're all on the right trail here. And he may be a Rev Wa soldier, but it appears that no one has logged him in with the DAR, or try to be admitted under his name. If you have any proof of his service, womone of your side or mine could submit a suppplemental application, or jsut try to get him recorded at the DAR. . .In any event, many thanks for this updated information. - Edward

Hi Edward..the information I use was typed years ago...the name Abraham Henry could easily have been seperated by a comma...I cannot tell. From Bible Birth Record he was born Dec 15, 1753 and it is repeated that he was a Revolutionary Soldier. I'm sorry I can't go any further with this, but I would think if the dates correspond we can assume he is "Abraham, Henry". His daughter (?) Born Feb 13, 1798, is listed as Margaret Henry; she married (?) Sherer , who William Egge married. If I can find any other papers, I will let you know. Thanks, Val

Hi again -- in the note I'm replying to, you mention that Abraham Henry b. 1753 is listed among the DAR patriots -- I have the new Millenium edition of the DAR Patriot Index, and don't see an Abraham Henry. I see two named Henry Abraham, look like father and son Just wanted to be sure the name I see in you note is correct -- and that you're sure this ancestor is DAR-listed Thanks!
