I recently noticed this posting and wonder if you can help me with a family mystery. My father was a cousin of Wilfred Eggebrecht, an only child who died in his late teens. Years ago I heard a story--never got the details--about a cousin who was away at school and died in a hazing accident. I've eliminated everyone but Wilfred Eggebrecht as being the cousin my father referred to, but I'm unable to confirm it or learn more about it. They were Milwaukee families and Wilfred was buried in Forest Home Cemetery, I believe in 1925. Any information on this?

M Krause

I just saw your post on ancestry.com and although I know it is fairly old, I would love to compare some things with you. My grandfather's name was William Frank Spohnholtz and he was born around 1923, in Kane County IL. He lived in Carpentersville IL. I dont know much about this side of my family, and seeing as how this is not a very common name, I am sure there is some relation somewhere. I would love to hear from you and find out. Thanks so much!

Hi Mike,
Laura was my grand aunt. However, her birth name was Laura Nicklaus. Her father was Johann(John) Frederick Eggebrecht Nicklaus and her mother was Louisa May (Mamie) Andres. Grandmother is Karoline Eggebrecht. Karoline came to the US from Germany in 1888 with son John. Laura had a brother named James Paul Nicklaus. Laura also had 2 half sisters, Ruth and Roberta Johnson. I was born in Hammond, Indiana and have been researching this family too. I'd be happy to share more info.

Hope that helps,
Jennifer

My sister has been working on the family tree for some time now and tells me our Grandfather and family came to the states in 1861 and moved to this area.
As for your question on the dropping the G . I read in a old book at school that there was a king eggbert in England and that we would be decendants.
Hello K Goodwing

My great grandfather (Edward Fredrick) was a brother of Max. Have you gotten very far? Their mothers name was Wilhelmina Geirman with many variants of the last name. Their father's name is Wilhelm Johann Theodor Egebrecht. I have Wilhelm's Pommeramian passport which shows the last name spelled with one G. Wilhelm was born in Roidin, Pommerania Apr 3 1848. He immigrated to Chicago in 1868.

I've had little success getting info on the parents. Can anyone help?

Some of the Eggebrecht's have changed the spelling they dropped one of the g's. My husbands grandfather Max is from this line, not sure if he dropped the g or his father did. They were from the Chicago area. Max Egebrecht had two sons Marshall Herman and can't remeber at this time what his other sons name is.

Anita,
My gr.gr.grandfather was Carl Eggebrecht, one of seven Eggebrecht brothers emmigrating to the U.S,one of the seven was Johann{John},emmigrating to the U.S.in 1857 in New York.Born in 1829 in Germany. He was married twice.First wife Friedrika, second wife,Friedricke Jess[Gass] Anderson,a widow. The second marriage took place on January 1,1880.
I know of only one son ,Charles Herman.Charles name was listed on the ship's log when John came into the U.S.
in 1857.
You have a listing from the 1880 census.By then this John had already married his second wife, and his son Charles Herman was probably already married, and out of his father's house.
Everything you have mentioned fits this John[my gr.gr.gr.uncle as being your ancestor.]
I have a photo of the seven Eggebrecht brothers.I also know that John was in the Civil War,and I can show you how to go about getting a copy of his war records.
You can reach me at anytime at: bethr@fidnet.com
Hope to hear back from you.Good luck in your research.
Beth Metts

Message #7 Thursday, August 12, 1999, Subject:
Eggebrecht Posted by: Jerry Eggebrecht you mentioned
that you were unable to trace your great grandfather
back any further than germany and it turns out he left
the house on day and never came back. The same
thing happened to my great-great grandfather. He was
married to Lucinda Sims and left her around 1886 with
4 living children. One son James Murray married
Nora Gilmore, and they had 9 children. The other
son, Henry married Maggie Maywald, and they
had six children, only one son, my grandfather.
I certainly hope there's a connection! My email
is rjcknic@earthlink.net. I hope you have the
key that unlocks the mystery!

Mary,
Do you have any information on an August Eggebrecht? I know quite a bit about his later life, but I have no idea who his parents were and where he came from in Germany. He was born Aug 8, 1844 in Germany and migrated to the US in 1869. His application for citizenship lists June 26, 1869. He received his citizenship on February 9, 1876 in Delaware County, Iowa. He married a Louisa Scharnhorst and they had three children: Adelheid Elise Marie, Herman, and Louis William (my grandfather). The family lived in Pittsburg,Kansas and later in Hudson, Kansas where August died on March 21, 1918. Any information or leads that you can give me would be wonderful. Thanks!
Mitzi Gilbert (mgilbert@televar.com)

This posting is probably too old- but I'm not so sure about that. My mother was Pattie Sue Eggebrecht from Waco, Texas. I seem to recall that our family tree that my great aunt Jimmy traced included Gilberts. I could be wrong. Her father Richard had several brothers and sisters: Jimmy, Clara, Carmen, Jenny, Lucian, Truitt and Nora Mae.

She married Piotr Mieszanek in Szrensk, Poland in the 1890s and came to Chicago with her children in 1910-12. Her origins have been a mystery with a few exotic tales surroundinfg her,
