Birth: Feb., 1586
Settrington
North Yorkshire, England
Death: Sep. 1, 1674
Windsor
Hartford County
Connecticut, USA

Bigod Eggleston was baptized Settrington, Yorkshire, 20 February 1586[/7], son of "James Egeleston." (Rosalie Eggleston and Linda Eggleston McBroom have identified the mother of Bigod Eggleston as Margaret, daughter of Miles Harker of Settrington.)
He came to Massachusetts Bay with his family in 1630. It is likely that he traveled aboard the Mary & John only if he had moved his family to Devon, Dorset, or Somerset by 1630. English records of this family 1615-30 have not been found..
Like the Mary & John passengers, they first settled in Dorchester MA & moved to Windsor CT in 1635. He died in Windsor 1 September 1674 "near 100 year old" (but actually eighty-seven).
MARRIAGE: (1) By 1612 _____ _____; not seen in any record.
(2) By about 1634 _____ _____; on 5 June 1645 "Baggett Egleston, for bequeathing his wife to a young man, is fined 20s.;" living on 13 November 1673 when named in her husband's will.
Anderson's Great Migration Begins, pp. 621 et seq.

Family links:
Spouses:
1st wife Eggleston
2nd wife Eggleston

Children:
James Eggleston (1612 - 1613)*
Mary Eggleston (1613 - ____)*
James Eggleston (1620 - ____)*
Samuel Eggleston (1634 - ____)*
Mary Eggleston Denslow (1636 - ____)*
Thomas Eggleston (1638 - ____)*
Mercy Eggleston (1641 - 1657)*
Sarah Eggleston Pettibone (1643 - ____)*
Abigail Eggleston Osborn (1648 - ____)*
Joseph Eggleston (1651 - ____)*
Benjamin Eggleston (1653 - ____)*

*Calculated relationship

Burial:
Palisado Cemetery
Windsor
Hartford County
Connecticut, USA
Plot: Founder's Monument

Thank you for the reply. Clio is a half aunt, my fathers half sister. She would have been 12 in 1930. The short version of the story is that she went to California with her step-sister, apparently sometime before 1930, and was not heard from again by the family. I haven't been able to find very much on her except that it appears she may have passed away in 1985 in Fresno.
I am looking for information on Clio Ollie Tisdale, She was born in Miller County, Arkansas. Her father was Charles Edward Tisdale. The 1930 Census lists her in Los Angeles Ca under the family of Eward C. and Emma A. Eggleston as a roomer. She was about 12 years old at the time. Alternate sources have her as Clyo or Allie and sometime the first and middle name have been reversed.

Hi JRice3329, I am not sure. Real fuzzy on the details of Chauncey's later life. I do know he moved back and forth between Michigan and Alabama at least once, and that might have been without his wife and children -- he is not living with them on at least one census, but we all know how unreliable census info can be. Can you tell more about the Chauncey with the Draime family? Maybe it is the same one. Where and when did the move take place? any other details on Chauncey that we could match up? Thanks for your reply.
~kim
I have a Cyrus Eggleston born in 1819 in Orleans, Kendall county, NY with a father born in CT. I haven't found anything on his parents. He married Clarissa Baker in 1846 and they lived on her father's farm in Harmony, NY.

Coming from CT, they are most likely descendants of Bigod Eggleston who left England in 1630, arrived in Dorchester, MA and was a founding father of Windsor, CT. I hope this helps you - I haven't found any links yet. I live in CT and have pictures of the Founder's Monument in Windsor.

Izula Eggleston born 1897 in NY married 1921 in Ohio

I'm stumped on this one! I can't find any information at all about Ezula Eggleston born 1897 to William Eggleston and Eva Russell. The only record I can find is an Ohio marriage certificate that shows she was married to my ancestor Wade Baxter Landfield. This record states that he had never been married but the 1920 census states he was widowed although his wife was living in New York with their daughter and the census states she was married. An Ohio marriage record states that they did remarry in 1930 after a divorce and they had both been married once. "Both" Wade Baxter Landfields have the same parents: Chandler Landfield and Ellen Baxter. Can anyone help?

NY Eggleston Sisters

LAura Eggleston B 1809 in New York, was married to Thomas Powell and then Absalom Dennis with whom she had one child, Elizabeth Powell (my 3rd G Grandmother) B 1848.

Laura had a sister named Johanna Eggleston (my 4th g grandmother) B 1820 and D 1841 who married John Lackor, with whom she had a child, William Smith Lackor (my 3rd G Grandfather).

All of this gets very confused in the very limited data I can find as after Johanna dies at age 21, Laura raises Johanna's son William who then marries her daughter Elizabeth.
After talking to family and going through what I have been able to find online, I have pretty much sorted things out to that point but I am stuck in finding the Eggleston sister's parents. It seems that the sisters were born in New York and Johanna was buried there. At some point, Laura moves west to Iowa and marries Absalom Dennis who is either widowed or divorced.

I would love to move on back with the Eggleston line but I am stuck.

Carole Lang! Crossing my fingers you are still on here, because I am researching the Adna-John-Chauncey-Oscar Eggleston line around the Muskegon area too. The Oscar you mention is my husband's great-grandfather and his middle name started with an F as far as I know, so I don't think he is the Oscar OP is looking for. But I'd love to talk to you! Are you a descendant of Grace Eggleston and Selvester Lang, maybe?
--Kim

Hi, there are several variations of the name Eggleston. I have seen one spelled Eglestone. I don't know if the James Egglestonne is the same as James Egleston. I thought at first that you were wondering about James Egleston, the father of Bigod Eggleston. I've never heard of New Malton. Here is a site you might look at. rootsweb.ancestry.com/~genepool. Family History-View list of Family History Pages,Click. Colorful Family History(Surnames), scroll down and click Eggleston, Click on English Origin of Bygod Eggleston & Settrington Parish Records, scroll down- see Entries From the Register of the Parish of Settrington, 1559-1812. Bygod is listed first. Bygod's father's name is listed as James(Jacobi) Egleston

Yes idahoredd that's what I am getting at. As you say I've seen the two James' mentioned but none had this specific document and thus the date. Also the fact that Bygod in his latter youth was raised in Norwich and supposedly married his first wife there. I am pretty sure there wouldn't be a second Bygod having babies at the same time. But anything is possible. For someone so well researched I am surprised no one has found this New Malton record to either discount it or add it to the immigrant Bigod.

If I am correct you were looking at a doc for James with the father's name of Bygod. From the records I have seen Bygod had two sons named James with the first one dying young. All of the records I have seen for 2nd James do not show a birth or baptism date. I have been to Malton and you are right it is not very far from Settrington, but it is curious that Bygod would not have had his son baptised in the same church where he was baptised.

Thank you.

What I was trying to figure out is if the father (Bigod Egglestonne) of this James cr 1615 in New Malton is the same Bygod Eggleston who was born in Settrington and was raised in Norwich with his uncle Sylvester. I find no one linking this documentation from the Parish records (found at familysearch.org) to James the son of Bygod the one who immigrates in 1630 to the US. If they are the same then it would indicate that Bygod went back to Yorkshire before immigration.

Hello. I don't know if it is the same Bygod who emmigrated to the United States but the information I have is that Bygod was baptised 1586 Feb 20 in the Parish of Settrington. Please email me at jcarlson0054@charter.net and I'll give you the information where I found it. You can also check on the Eggleston family website at www.pennlaird.com/eggleston. There is a lot of interesting information on there.

Bygod Eggleston

I am just sorting out my data on Bygod Eggleston. I've read that he was originally from Settrington but was raised and married in Norwich. I found at familysearch.org a Bigod Egglestonne who is named on the christening record of James Egglestonne in New Malton, Yorkshire (which is the larger town near Settrington) at St Michael 21 Sep 1615. Anyone know if this is the Bygod who immigrated in 1630 to New England?

Thanks
Shanan

If anyone can provide any information we would greatly appreciate it
The Dilkes family provided quite a bit of documentation.
Georgia and Howard were the parents of my grandmother and she was a later in life baby. Many of the family members had died by the time she would have been old enough to really remember them. It has been very difficult to authenticate Georgia's family stories.
Hello there! I came across this when doing a search for my great, great, great grandfather whose name I believe was John W. Eggleston. He was married to a woman named Harriet, whose last name I haven't found. They had four children, John W. Almon C. (My great, great grandfather), William H. or N. and George H. or N. (The handwriting on the census was hard to read!). I was just wondering if any of these names are familiar to you. I have spent a lot of tinme trying to find information on John and have come up empty handed thus far. I believe he ended up in Wisconsin, which is where I am from. My grandmother (Marjorie Thompson [Dumbleton] was born in Stevens Point Wisconsin to Chester Dumbleton and Ethel U. (Eggleston). Ethel's parents were Almon C. Eggleson and Effie (Danforth). Of course we then get to John Eggleston and Harriet. This is where I am stuck. If you have any information you think could help I would greatly appreciate it. Maybe John is a cousin or uncle to Mary? Maybe you and I are even related! That would be pretty neat!! I really really appreciate your time. Thanks so much!
Best regards,
Jennifer R. Wilson

Hi Kathy Sarah actually divorced Samuel. Who are the names of the nine children of Samuel Emmet and Sarah? Sarah is buried next to her daughter and son-in-law in Riverside Cemetery Hastings Mi. I think I have found a burial site for one of their infant sons, named for Samuel, in either Irving Township Cemetery or Freeport Cemetery. I have found a burial site for a Samuel M in Battle Creek, Mi but I don't know if it is the same Samuel E that I'm looking for. A big mystery. You can contact me at jcarlson0054@charter.net I tried to contact you earlier but it didn't work. Cyndy Carlson
Egglestons in Litchfield CT

Looking for a connection to Reynolds? Found a William Reynolds in Torrington with lots of Eggleston's next to him, can't find William again. Think he might be the father to my Rufus Reynolds born 1800 in CT. I believe him to be born in Lithcfield because everyone I search from the same area's he lived were from there as well. Any help would be appreciated, Thank You

I realize this is a very old post, but if you still check for replies I would like to know more about Jamea Henley McCroskey's mother last name being Eggleston and not Price.
