Immigration info on Joseph Ehlinger

Am trying to find exact date that ancestor Joseph Ehlinger came to USA abt 1832. He was living in Bitschwiller Haut-Rhine, Alsace, France and married to Maria Anna Koehl in 1821. Would like date, place of entry and place of departure in France as well as other pertinent information. He returned to France in 1838 which is well documented but the 1832 date has been elusive. Any help will be appreciated.

I have tried but no solid information. Mathias came over in late 1840 or early 1850. Luxembourg, France, Belgium have all been listed on census records as well as Germany,Of course this is due to the boundary changes in Europe.
I have never found any mention of brothers of Mathias in my years of searching. But family says there were, like many tales, three brothers who came over. There have been some in Michigan but still don't know of any that went to Texas or beyond Indiana.
Keep me in your files and check back when you want. I haven't worked on this line for some time.
Working on class list for our 50th reunion year. Now you know how old I am!!!
Elaine

Joseph Ehlinger came to U.S. in 1833. That would make a large age difference if they were brothers. He lived in Bitschwiller-Haut-Rhin. I have been looking on internet site for Bitschwiller and found that in 1965 two persons with that last name ran for political office in the town. I want to look further into it to see if there are still people with that name living there.
Thanks for getting back to me so promptly. We may end up stubbling on a connection somewhere!

Have you been able to locate any information on the name of the ship Joseph came to America on the first time and where it landed? I have not had luck finding this.

If you look closely at the record in my file you'll see that I do indeed show Elisabeth as having been born in France. The note indicates that at the time of her birth her father was already in Texas.

I am related to both Joseph and his wife over half a dozen different ways each. The closest relationship would be that Joseph was a second cousin of my gggg-grandmother Maria Anna Luttenbacher (1765-1840), wife of Blaise Golly. Their granddaughter Marie Agathe Golly (1838-1917) came to the US in 1881 with her husband and five children and settled in Canton, OH.

I am interested in knowing if he had siblings and if any came to America with him. I would also like to find out more about his time in the military under Napoleon.

I'm pretty certain the Ehlingers who replied to my post are not related to me. I visited the town in Alsace Lorraine where my Great Grandfather August Ehlinger was born. He seems to have been the black sheep of the family and left for America while the others stayed.

Hi, I'd be happy to share what I have. It is mostly older information from Sigfried's generation. I have the names of the siblings, their birth and death years, number of children, and the names of their spouses. I wrote it all down many years ago before my Grandparents passed away. Many of them were buried in St. Mary's cemetery in Pittsburgh and you can go online to view the 'residents'. The family was very close and there were frequent family visits when I was a child (in the 1950s) but I've lost touch with all of that as has my mother. It was my grandparents who kept these connections alive and the connections died with them.

According to my Grandfather, who was Fridolina's son, Fridolina and her siblings (8 in all) immigrated to the US leaving behind their parents in Wallbach Switzerland. I wanted confirmation of this and several years ago went to Wallbach, a picturesque little village on the river separating Switzerland from Germany. I discovered that the patron Saint is Fridolin, whose statue is on the bridge separating Germany from Switzerland. According to my Grandfather Fridolin (d. 1883) was from the Swiss side. There are dozens of Nussbaum and Nussbaumer markers in the Wallbach cemetery. They out number any of the other names in the cemetery. Verena (whose last name my Grandfather thought was some derivative of Wunderle; d. 1885) was from the adjacent German town just across the river and again there are dozens of grave markers with similar sounding names. However, Fridolin's and Verona's markers are not in either cemetery. Strangely the oldest cemetery markers were only about 30-40 years old. I found out that cemetery plots are reused. I don't know what they do with the old markers and caskets. I discovered this over and over throughout Europe and it seems to be a fundamental difference with the US.

I was unable to go further back in the family history though there are likely to be church records. You need proof that you are a blood relative to access the Swiss records. I didn't have such proof on me at the time and don't know what constitutes proof since I have a different last name.

I would have to dig out the family history. All my dad said was that he was a cousin and that is where I got my artistic talent from. John and Mary Ellringer were is grandparents and my dad died at 95, 5 years ago. I know there nationality was French, Luxenbourg and German. They settled in the lower Minnesota area of Elba & Beaver in Whitewater State Park. They came over with the Majerus who were also from Luxenbourg. The town of Beaver Minnesota got flooded out back in the 30's and they never rebuilt and now it is part of the Whitewater State Park. I wish I new more.

Hi, my family changed there name from Ehlinger to Ellringer either before they came over to America or after. They did that back in those days so more family could come over. Only so many from one family could come over. My dad (Stanley Ellringer) visited during WW II a cousin who was an artist in Paris and his name was Maurice Ehlinger. He was around 45 years old at the time. My great grandparents came from Luxenbourg and they were John & Mary Ehlinger from there. Hope that helps, this info was pasted down to me by my grandma Lucy Ellringer.

Had sons: Nicholas, Peter, John, two girls who died young, daughter Catherine. Parents of Mathias were J. B and Katrina. Have Catholic church records of Mathias' children baptisms; and Mathias and Catherine's marriage which list parents. Maiden name of Catherine looks like Logelie,( French?maybe?)
