There are over 50 Ehlke entries found in the index "Milwaukee's German Newspapers; an index of death notices and related items" covering 1844-1950. For instance there are family death notices published for an August Ehlke (1911) and a Bertha (née Braatz, 1918 & 1942).

Look-ups from the index are available via email, or the index can be browsed at the Salzmann Library, in St. Francis.

Gary Rebholz
compiler/editor
gary.rebholz@gmail.com

Hello Mario,
Thank you for your email so long ago now. I so appreciate the info you shared with me. I am not sure where you fit into the tree however so will not try to guess and make an error. I have been doing research on the Pattis family and its branches. Pattis was Matilda's maiden name and my grandmother Ida was her oldest sister. Thus her children were my dad's cousins so we got together with that side of the family occasionally. I remember Matilda well as she and Hattie the youngest sister lived close together and I was at Hattie's more frequently so was there several times when the two sisters were visiting. I have some history of that generation when they came to the US etc. and quite a bit for Hattie's Annie and of course Ida. I am always thrilled to connect with more of the family because I am missing many current pieces. Any info you have about Tillie's family I would love to have and would be glad tos hare what I have gathered of the rest. My parents have both died and I have lived in the Seattle area for over 40 years so don't really have opportunity to meet people in person. Thank so much for your response. Marilyn

HI Angela,
I came across your message yesterday. I went to High School with you dad at Fort Vancouver High School we graduated together. I have been trying to update and gather info for the Pattis family-Tillie's maiden name. Tillie was Elmer's mother. I remember her well from when I was a child visiting Hattie-her sister-in Vancouver and at the few family reunions we had. My mom-Mabel and dad Herman Beise-went to Butch's wedding if I remember right. I would love to have more complete info on your family. I only have Ron, not who he married and you and your married name plus your two children's names. Iw ould love to have additional information you might have. I have quite a few names from your branch but no specifics and quite a few holes.
I have a picture of your gr grandmother with her 4 sisters if you would like that. Also of her aunt Wilehlminia Beise. Seems first cousins married my grandfather Ida Pattis Beise and August Beise so his mother was also Ida and Tilli's aunt. Anyway if you are interested in any of that old history Iwould be glad to share it with you. Thank you for writing and sorry it has taken me so long to catch up to your email.
So glad you wrote. Any chance you can help me identify the other people not named in the photo? Your Great Grandfather, Herman and my Great Grandfather August were brothers. In 1900 the lived next to each other on Cleveland Street in Detroit. He was also a brewmeister at Klings Brewery on Jefferson. Could you tell me the name of the Bakery your Grandfather owned? I would be interested in learing more if you are willing to share.

Mary Ann

Hi, I have a feeling we are related. Did your family once live in Vancouver Washington. My dad had a cousin named Elmer Ehlke. My dad was Herman Beise and if we are related Elmer's mother would have been Matilda Ehlke. Her oldest sister was Ida who was my grandmother. Is any of this part of your family?
Did your dad go to Fort Vancouver high school by any chance? There was a Ron Ehlke that was in my class at Fort Vancouver. Nice guy in high school. Fun to see if this all connects. Thanks Marilyn

Most times it lists the name of the father and the mother as well as where he was living at the time of the application. Good luck.

Do you have any idea where August and Bertha came from in Germany? I might have some information either about them or their family from Germany. I have found quite a number of Ehlke's on an LSD film from Germany about the time of August and Bertha and there are several families from that area that seem to interconnect a number of times and in a number of ways. I have not been able to diagram it all out but would really like to know the home town of your August. There could be several connections.

My father's aunt married Albert Ehlke. My father's family moved from GErmany 1890 to Minnesota and then North Dakota. I think his aunt married Albert in NOrth Dakota but I am not sure. I would love to hear from you about your research. Marilyn

Whoppee!!! It is so exciting to connect with direct family. I was hoping to be able to do that over e-mail. My father was Herman Beise, his mother was Ida Beise and she was the oldest sister of Mathilda. I knew Millie some but was pretty little, My parents knew the whole family well. I remember Tillie coming to visit their younger sister Hattie when I was in Jr. High-Shumway. I have written to Mary Weston but she does not use e-mail. I have been researching the Beise family primarily in GErmany and some for the Pattis family. I would love to share any information with you and would really like to fill in the holes for Tillie's family as I have quite a bit of information on the other girls altho not as much on Martha as I would like. Who is your father-in-law? I have only names for his generation and probably am missing some of them and almost nothing for anyone after that. What family are you researching? Looking forward to hearing from you. Marilyn

I think my parents used to refer to Harold as "Butch". I may have even been at his wedding. I know I went to someones wedding when I was a little kid and it seems it may have been his. I have quite a bit of info regarding Ida and Hattie's families and am contact with Annie's family and know most of them also. This is really exciting. Thanks. Marilyn

Thank you so much, This is wonderful. I didn't even have all the eight children's names so this is a treasure. I also have quite a bit of information on Pattis, back a few generations and I think I finally found their home town in Germany just about 2 months ago. It has been a learning experience trying to learn how to find infomration since it seems no one has kept original records, at least my grandparents didn't. I would love to write to Peggy. Thanks again.

My Elhke family is very sketchy I am afraid. My father's aunt married an Albert Elhke and although I am quite sure he came from GErmany I do not have information about his parents. I did find some reference to Elhke on a film through LDS not very far from where my Beise family came from in Germany. So I don't know where any of Albert's family may have lived. Sorry, thanks for your notice however. Marilyn

I have a great-great grandfather named August Ehlke, who came to the states from Germany in 1888 with his wife Bertha and 3 children. One of the children was named Emma, and she was my great-grandmother. August, Bertha, and family lived in Milwaukee. Any connection here???

My August Ehlke was born in Germany in 1847, and married a woman named Bertha, also born in Germany in 1849. They immigrated to the states in 1888 and settled in Milwaukee where (according to the 1900 census) they lived at 487 17th Ave. They had 4 children - Emma, Robert, Elsa and Clara. Emma married my great-grandfather, William Rosenberg and they lived in Milwaukee until their deaths. Think there might be a connection??

So far, I have not been able to trace their home town in Germany. August and Bertha settled in in Milwaukee, but all documents I have been able to locate (such as birth certificates marriage licenses of their children and the 1900 census all merely list "Germany" as place of birth. I hope to be able to obtain more from the "Germans to America" series, but there is not a set local to my home, so it may be a while before I get my hands on it. I will certainly try to keep you posted, though, and if you happen to come across anything pertinent to them, please notify me.

I am just beginning a search for my father's family--EHLKE. His name is Earl, his father's name was Edward.
Edward lived most his life in Appleton, WI, passing away there around 1970. He had three sons (Earl, Ralph, Harold) and one daughter (Marion, recently passed).
How can I track back farther than Edward and find out more about where his family came from? Any suggestions are appreciated.
