Re: does anybody know where the name originated?

Hi there...my Eichenlaub family came from Neiderroedern, Germany (now in France due to war boundary line changes). I am Daniel M. Oakleaf (Eichenlaub), descendant of Jacob (1817) and Lena (Zerman) Eichenlaub, who moved to the USA from that town in the mid 1800s. Jacob and Lena are buried in the South Colon Cemetery, in Colon Michigan, USA. My line is traced back to 1604, and have names, but not not a lot of info on where they lived other than general names like Kapsweyer, Herxheim, Landau, etc...I have friends and distant relatives that visited Neiderroedern FR, and some Eichenlaub names are said to be carved on the wall posts inside an old village Inn building. I know there were lots of Eichenlaubs from Landau, but again need some help on the mid 1800s and back. dano710best@yahoo.com
My grandmother was Mabel Elizabeth Synder who died in 66 or 67 when I was 4 or 5. (Heart attack) Her son is Phillip Rocco Jimrusti (My father) He remembers that she had a sister Rose who married an Eichenlaub and a brother Willard. I don't know where the name Schrieber came from unless she married again. Was Hannah Mabel's daughter? I heard she had more children. Are we related?

Karin Jimrusti Melton

PA Eichenlaub

I think that I may have just discovered a connection to the PA Eichenlaub's to my Waltz line.

Michael J. Waltz married Elizabeth Eichenlaub in Altoona, PA on June 13, 1860. Elizabeth was the daughter of Joseph Eichenlaub and Mary Ann Sherry. She was born in 1841, probably in Pittsburgh. Their children: Michael, Catherine, John, Francis, Annie, Harry. (I just found the above information on a RootsWeb message board, and am waiting for a return e-mail from the author.)

However, I am pretty sure that Michael Elizabeth's son, John, was my great-grandfather. I have a copy of my grandfather's baptism certificate and it lists his Godparents as Michael Mary Eichenlaub. Also, the John referred to above is approximately the right age.

My grandfather, Mamertus A. Waltz, was born in Altoona on May 11, 1890 to John G. Waltz and Margaret McGovern. I believe that Elizabeth (Eichenlaub)Waltz was his grandmother.

Is this any connection to your Eichenlaub's? Please e-mail me at lbraund@fyi.net.

Thanks!

Jacob Eichenlaub and Margaret Friedmann are my line and emigrated in 1831. I would be very intersted in being able to connect much of the information I have to this couple. If you can help, I would really appreciate what you are willing to share.

I found the record of his marriage to Catherine Schmittmeyer in the St. John's Catholic Church records. There is also evidence of his marriage to Catherine in the census records. I can't find anything on a third wife but the search continues.

Sandy, Our branch of the Eichenlaub family came from Herxheim in the Rhein-Pfalz. It's a village not far from Landau. There is another branch from Wissembourg just across the border in France (although it used to be in Germany too). It appears the Eichenlaubs were scattered around the area in the former Bavarian Palatinate (Rhein-Pfalz). I have information on our branch going back to the 1600s in Herxheim.

According to the Mormon Church Records on Herxheim, Germany there were Eichenlaubs in the Pfalz-Bayern as far back as the late 1500s. I would assume the family must have been existence prior to that time however, at this time, that's the earliest record of an Eichenlaub I've been able to locate.

Hey Lynette,

I've been researching the Eichenlaub Family of Blair/Cambria County fame for several years now. I'd like to exchange information. I've been in touch with several people who are connected to our family. In fact, I just recently met Tyna on the internet. There's a wealth of information out there. Have you been to the Blair County Genealogical Library in Hollidaysburg? I've donated a good bit of information on the Eichenlaubs, for example, the Civil Pension files for Valentine and Joseph Eichenlaub, obituaries and death certificates. I look forward to hearing from you.

Shawn Clark

Do you have parents names for your ggggrandfather Joseph? If not the Steinfeld/Kapsweyer databases on Ancestry might help. They do list some events from Herxheim and surrounding towns. I have 2 Josephs bc 1809 who could be yours but without parents names, I cannot tell. My Eichenlaub connection occurs with the marriage of Eva Margaret Eichenlaub to Philipp Jacob Rohrig in 1786. Her parents were Johann Martin Eichenlaub and Margaret Brentzel. Johann Martin's parents were Johann Jacob Eichenlaub and Anna Barbara Gorger/Jorger. Philipp Jacob Roehrig's son Andreas immigrated to the US c 1851. Too old to serve in Civil War. Settled in Kingston, NY.

Sandy,
Unless you know that your ancestors came from the towns of Kapsweyer or Steinfeld, that are now in the section known as the RhinelandPfalz, I cannot be of much help. There are hundreds of towns in that area and I believe each one has its own vital record system - either civil or church. You really need to know which town they were from and then find out what resources are available on microfilm.

My great grandfather was a Valentine Eichenlaub, born on February 14th, 1832, and he married Barbara Ann Yingling, who was born on Germany on July 17th, 1841, and came to America at the age of 19 in 1860. My Grandfather was Valentine Frederick Eichenlaub, born September 10th, 1871, and died on October 5th, 1922. Do you have any idea how these might have fit into the Eichenlaub family information you have found thus far?

I noticed your mentioning of a Jacobina Amanda Zimmer in your post marrying an Eichenlaub from Rockenhausen. I am descended from Jacobina's younger brother Jacob. I was curious to know if there is additional notes on the Zimmer's or the Klein's in the information you have. I know their mother's name was Catherine Klein, father's name was John Philip Zimmer. Thanks!

Walburgis EICHENLAUB, born on March 9, 1838, in Herxheim Landau, Pfalz, Bayern. Her parents were Josephi Eichenlaub and Margarethae FRECH. Walburgis married Ambrose Mentz, born in 1839, and came with him to America in 1853 and he died on Sept. 5, 1908. Ambrose was either the son/nephew of my GG, Ludwig Mentz, born in 1808 in Bavaria, emigrated at the same time with them, and died in Eire, PA, on July 26, 1879. See Mentz Genealogy in Bavaria. Hope this is helpful during your visit to Herxheim.

I am looking for information on Marie Theresa's family in Germany. She was born in Herxheim near Landau. She married Nikolaus Forcht in 1893. His birthplace was Roxheim, Germany. They had two children. Their son, Anton, was my father. Marie Theresa died in Germany in 1902. Thank you.
