I am going to Ottweiler this month to do some family research on Garrosse/Garros from early 1700s who married into Meistrell/Magistroll family later from St Wendel. Also looking for family of Joanna Peiffer of Ottweiler who married Joseph Meistrell in 1832. I am in contact with the Registry office which has both civil and church records. Is there any information you can give me that would help me in my research there?

Thank you for your assistance.
Nancy Burnett

As may be inferred from the name. Mr. Eichhorn is of German lineage. His father, Philip Eichhorn, was born in the Fatherland, and when a youth came to the United States, the family settling in Crawford county, Ohio. The mother, who bore the maiden name of Margaret Hassler, was also of German birth and her arrival in America was contemporary with that of her future husband. After their marriage the parents settled on a farm in Crawford county, and continued to reside there until the year 1864, when they moved to Wells county, Indiana, locating in Rock Creek township, where Philip Eichhorn became the owner of a large and valuable tract of land, numbering about eight hundred acres. He was a man of great energy and thrift, provided liberally for his family and at his death, which occurred not long after his arrival left a large estate much of which is still in possession of his descendants. The property was divided among the children, viz: Frederick, William, John, Daniel, Elizabeth, Mary, David, Margaret and Philip.

David Eichhorn, whose name introduces this article, was born in Crawford county, Ohio, September 11, 1852. When about eleven years old he was brought to Indiana and from that time to the present his life has been very closely interwoven with the growth and development of Wells county. Blessed with excellent parentage and reared according to the democracy of the farm, he early developed strength of character and definiteness of purpose, which served well as a foundation for the successful career which he has since led as an enterprising farmer and business man and intelligent, broad minded member of the body politic. The public schools afforded him the means of a fair education, but by far the greater part of his knowledge is of that practical kind obtained by coming in contact with the world in the stern school of experience. Until twenty-one years of age Mr. Eichhorn remained on the farm with his mother, whose interests he looked after as became a true and faithful son. On attaining his majority he began working for himself and four years later was united in marriage to Miss Mary E. Griffin, the ceremony being solemnized on the 6th day of August, 1876. Mrs. Eichhorn was born in Wells county, her parents having been among the early and well known pioneers of this part of the state.

Immediately following his marriage, Mr. Eichhorn moved to a quarter section of land in the county of Wells, which he still owns and on which he lived and prospered until October, 1901, when he turned the place over to the hands of others and moved to Bluffton, with the object in view of spending the remainder of his life in retirement. Mr. Eichhorn's career as an agriculturist was fortunate in every respect, as is attested by the ample competence acquired during the years of his active labor. He became one of the leading farmers of the county, also took high rank as a business man, while his standing as a citizen was second to that of no other man in the township of his residence. Shortly after moving to Bluffton he became associated with N. E. Stafford and G. A. Harnish in the manufacture of flour, the partnership thus constituted being still in existence. This firm has completely rebuilt and remodeled the Wabash River Mill, furnished it with machinery for the manufacture of flour by the latest improved process and under the personal supervision of Mr. Stafford, a practical miller of many years' experience, the enterprise has become one of the city's most important industries. Mr. Eichhorn has long been interested in the progress of his adopted county, and his attitude towards all movements having for their object its material advancement has been that of a wide awake, enterprising and thoroughly public spirited man. He has served his township in various official capacities, but has never been an office seeker, although for many years one of the leading Democrats of his part of the county. Believing the principles of Democracy to be for the best interests of the people, and having an abiding faith in the dignity of the party's mission, he has been active in supporting same, devoting much of his time to the cause in local, state and national contests. For some time he was a member of the township council and for a period of four years served as assessor, discharging the duties of both positions in a manner highly creditable to himself and satisfactory to the public.

Mr. Eichhorn holds fraternal relations with the Knights of Pythias, belonging to the lodge at Uniondale, which he has served in important official positions, besides representing it in the grand lodge of Indiana. He is an earnest believer in revealed religion, and, like all true disciples, makes his daily life correspond with his profession. Reared according to the strict teachings of the German Reformed church, his early religious instructions had a potent power in shaping his conduct, as is evident from the correct deportment and symmetrically developed Christian character which has been manifest in all his relations with his fellow men. He has held office of deacon in the local church with which he is identified, his family also belonging to the German Reformed communion.

Mr. and Mrs. Eichhorn are the parents of six children, whose names are as follows: Ira T., born September 27, 1877, is unmarried and still a member of the home circle; Stella P., born June 18, 1880, is the wife of John H. Lesh; Orville D., whose birth occurred on the 27th of May, 1882, has never left the parental roof; Elva M., wife of T. P. Paxson, was born August 31, 1885; Floa L. was born November 29, 1891, and Celia on the 27th day of October, 1893. Mr. Eichhorn is peculiarly blessed in his household and has so deported himself as to be a worthy example to his children. His life forcibly illustrates what can be accomplished by concentration of purpose and indomitable perseverance, directed and controlled by correct moral and religious principles. He is a fine representative of successful manhood, and possesses a character marked by integrity, true benevolence and a high sense of personal honor.

Enjoy!
Bruce Sonner

Wow - Thanks Wolfgang! I reviewed the list and it appears to show the names of a couple of George's brothers (in addition to confirming George's middle name). In documents from the 1880's, George mentions at least one of his brothers either living in the USA or as having lived in the USA at one point.

For reference (Betty!), the three Eichhorn listings from Schweina that have the same reference:

Eichhorn, Heinrich, Alter oder Geburtsdatum: 19 Jahre, aus: Schweina, aus gewandert nach:
Nordamerika im Jahre 1848
Quelle: Kreis Meiningen Nr. 697

Eichhorn, August, Beruf: Taglöhner, Alter oder Geburtsdatum: 16 Jahre, aus: Schweina, aus
gewandert nach: Nordamerika im Jahre 1848
Quelle: Kreis Meiningen Nr. 697

Eichhorn, Georg Caspar, Beruf: Taglöhner, Alter oder Geburtsdatum: 16 Jahre, aus:
Schweina, aus gewandert nach: Amerika im Jahre 1853
Quelle: Kreis Meiningen Nr. 697

I'm looking for any information (especially parentage) pertaining to Christian Eichhorn (abt 1861-2 May 1934). He married Marie Elisabetha Meier in St. Louis in 1887. Then he moved to Marengo, IA and lived there for the remainder of his life. He and his wife had seven children: Henry F, Anna L, Charles F, William F, Katherine A, Emma T, and Christina.

The census data that refers to his place of orgin is inconsistant (Switzerland, Czech Rep., Germany). The most probable orgin is Switzerland (around Bern).

I've heard that he had a sister named Anna???

Hello Fellow Eichhorns. Having grown up in So. California as the ONLY Eichhorn family anyone had ever heard of, suffering alone with the mispronunciations, nice to be in such good company! I went to visit family in Germany in 1984 and was stunned to see how many of us there were. My great-grandparents Theodore Eichhorn and Anna Posselt Eichhorn (DOB 1874)of Breslau, Germany, came to the US in 1914 & 1915 and settled in Cook County, Illinois. Both were music teachers/performers. Theodore/Theodor came over on the MAIN/1914, Anna and five children followed on the GEORGE WASHINGTON/1915, both Bremenhaven to NYC. Anyone have a long lost great-great uncle Theodore/Theodor? I would like to know about his family in Germany and which siblings also came to the US, or not. My grandfather was Charles W. Eichhorn (siblings Herbert, Kurt, Elsie, Clara Friebe), my father Richard T. Eichhorn. Direct email at drakyitms at AOL if you prefer.

Buckaroo242, I think to sent photo by ancestry, you have to upload to my documents, right now I have it in my pictures.Do you know how I can sent it so that you can see it? I could invite you to my tree but don't have your whole e-mail address, then you would be able to see all my Eichhorn/ Muschar info. Can you reach me through member connections?I would be happy to share my info with you.Christian Muschar died in Pittsburgh, Pa, April 14 1903,He is buried in Union Dale Cemetary not far from his son, Joseph.I think his parents died in Ohio. His dad, Joseph was still alive in 1850 but mother not listed in census. I do not have the exact year of birth for Christ but believe it was 1838. Catherine is probably the youngest child. I think maybe Magdalena (Scharf) Muschar died shortly after the birth of Catherine but haven't been able to verify yet.Betty Bettyrose007

I would really enjoy seeing a photo of George. I do not have many old photos on the Eichhorn side. I'll ask around the family and see what I can find. In many instances, people are hesitant to lend photos; however, they are usually willing to digitize photos.

We should all digitize and upload our photos as a way to share and to preserve the photos (especially the older photos!). If the photos are labelled properly, then they should be easy to find with a simple search.

I'll locate the Muschar/Mosher/Masher info/doucments that I have and digitize it. Did Christian pass away in or near Pittsburgh? How about his parents? Thanks.

To Buckaroo242. Great info. Cousin Dorothy Ann did not have middle name for George Eichhorn but she had sent me those photos. I can upload them, but I don't know how to get them to you. There are two photos of George and one of their home in Middleburg, Ohio. Maybe Eichhorn public tree may have had that middle name, I'll keep checking. Christ, Catherine's brother was married Feb.10, 1862 from St. Mary of the Assumption Church, Pine Creek, Glenshaw, Pa. No record of her marriage from that church perhaps St. Wenceslaus Church, Pittsburgh. Christ lived near that church most of his adult life.In 1864,he lived at 61 Voeghtly Street, Allegheny City, now Pittsburgh, Pa. I do have Caspar and Margaret listed as parents of George. Catherine's parents are Joseph Muschar and Magdalena Scharf.I also have photo copies of the headstones of George Eichhorn,Catherine,Isabel,Sarah, Jacob, all from Valley View Cemetary,Kansas.Catherine's siblings are Elizabeth Schmitt(Smith),Magdalena Munio, Mary Ann Burkhart,Christian Albert Muschar and John Magnus Musher.

Buckaroo,

There is little doubt that you and Betty are discussing the same George Eichhorn. We have seen many variants on the spelling of Muscher (Moscher, Moschel, Mauschel, Mushcher, you name it..) in records right here in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. Since the Muschar/Musher families (both Christian and his brother John Magnus and their descendants) lived in what was then Allegheny City (merged into Pittsburgh 1907) from the 1860's to the present day, there are a decent number of records to be found here.

By the way, Betty is my father's first cousin (my 1C1R). Thought I'd introduce myself a little. I've been away from the genealogy files for a while, but I have collaborated with Betty when possible, especially on the Muschar lines. She's been at it since the 1970's, while I'm a Johny-come-lately who only started in 2002.

I'd love to see any testimony given by my 3rd great grandfather Christian (Christ) Muschar for the pension of his brother-in-law George Eichhorn.. if you have it in some form that can be emailed.. or perhaps you can direct us to the source if that's not possible.

Concerning your Casbar/Caspar situation, we often see the 'b' and 'p' and sometimes even 'v' confusion with German names. For example, I've got a line with the surname ENGELSIEPEN, which is likely a corruption of ENGELSIEBEN (which is German for Seven Angels). I suppose they sound the same to German ears.. like 'b' and 'v' to Spanish speakers.

I saw the post concerning the Eichhorn / Musher (Muschar) line. With regard to the immigrant George Eichhorn, I do not yet have any verification regarding his middle name (if he actually had a middle name). George's father is listed on his death certificate (Garden City, Finney County, Kansas) as Mr. Casbar Eichhorn (could also be Caspar). His mother is simply listed as "Margaret." I am currently transcribing his Civil War Pension records, which are voluminous, so I may have some additional information soon. There is some evidence suggesting that George's middle name began with letter "C." Until I ran across "Augustus" in one of the public trees, I had not previously encountered George associated with this middle name. It might be a different George.

I would love to see any photos you may have of George or related family. Do you have them in digital (scanned) form?

Here is a rough timeline for George (which was taken from his deposition for a Civil War Pension):
- Born 1837 Germany (Schweina, Sachsen (Saxony), Meiningen, Germany)
- Spring 1853: Came to U.S., arrived in NYC, stayed there for 1 day.
- Spring 1853 to Winter 1854-1855: Newark, NJ, stayed in 6 different boarding houses.
* Worked as blacksmith, worked in carriage factory.
- NYC: 2 weeks.
- Hamburg, Germany: 4 weeks.
- NYC: 2-3 weeks.
- New Haven, Conn.: 2-3 months.
- NYC/Newark, NJ: 2-3 months
- NYC: 2 weeks.
- 1856: At sea: In the Orient; NY to Harve to Newport, England, to New Orleans to Liverpool, England, to Philadelphia, PA.
- 1856: Philadelphia, PA for about 2 months
- 1856/1857 to Spring 1857: New Orleans
- May 1857 to June 1858: St. Louis, Missouri. Worked as blacksmith for Daugherty, Murphy.
- June 1858 to June 1859: Newark and Rakway/Rahway (sp.), New Jersey.
- June 1859 to October 1859: Newvil/Nevillel (sp.), PA
- October 1859 to June/July 1860: Pittsburgh, PA. Worked as blacksmith for Joe Fisher.
- George becomes acquainted with Katherine Moscher in Allegheny City, PA, during this approximate time period.
- Intervening time: Louisville, back to Pittsburg; New Orleans, Appalachicola, Florida, Columbus, Georgia (his trip to Columbus, Georgia).
- July 1860 to March/April 1861: Columbus, GA. Worked as a blacksmith for Golden and Sandborn.
- Montgomery, Alabama, New Orleans, Mobile, Alabama, to Pittsburg, PA (trip back to PA).
- March 1861 to July 1861: Beaver, PA, and Oil Well, PA. Oil Well, PA, is apparently near Beaver, PA, or George was stating that he worked on an oil well near Beaver, PA.
- Intervening time: Often stopped at the home of Valentine Pfaffenburg, in Pittsburg, PA.
- Enlisted (Union Army): August 9, 1861, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
* Private, Company L, 5th Pennsylvania Volunteer Cavalry.
- August/September 1861: Arrives in Washington, D.C.
- September 1861: Thrown from his horse when watering horses in Washington, D.C., possibly while on furlough.
- Regimental Hospital: October 1862, between Yorktown and Williamsburg, Virginia, treated for kidney disease (and possibly malaria, "malarious condition.")
- Winter Quarters 1862-1863, near Williamsburg, Va.
- July or August 1863: Severe attack of chills and fever, King's Mill, Va.
- Honorable Discharge: November 30, 1863, Camp near Portsmouth, Virginia
- Re-enlisted: December 1, 1863, Camp near Portsmouth, Virginia
* Private, Company E (L consolidated with E), 5th Pennsylvania Volunteer Cavalry.
- Married: February 7, 1864, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to Katherine Moscher while on furlough from the military.
- Hospital: Pittsburgh, PA, January, February and March of 1865. Additional information indicates hospitalization from January 20, 1864 to April 12, 1864, at Pittsburgh, PA.
- Honorable Discharge: August 7, 1865, Richmond, Virginia
- August 7, 1865 to 1868: Pittsburgh, PA, and Allegheny City, PA
- 1868 to October 1885: Middle Creek, Noble County, Ohio
- 1869: Also appears to have been in Middleburg, Noble County, Ohio
- October 1885 until death (May 30, 1914): Garden City, Finney County, Kansas

George Augustus Eichhorn is the same George that Buckaroo 242 is researching. Catherine Muschar had a brother named Christian Muschar. Catherine was born in Calais, Ohio and Christian in Pittsburgh,Pa. John Magnus, Christ and Catherine's brother uses the German, shorter spelling of the name, Musher. Muschar is the French spelling. I will check where we found George Augustus Eichhorn's middle name. I do have a couple photos of him from cousin, Dorothy Ann, decendent of John Magnus Musher. Buckaroo242 may contact me.

All from Butler County, Ohio parents John eichhorn from Germany and Louisa Grosh also from Germany.
Re: Eichhorn Passengers - Germans to America

The Altenberg, Saxony citation was from a marriage certificate reference on Rosalia, not her own marriage, but the marriage of a stepdaughter to my great grandfather (Frowiss-Engel).

My great grandfather was Franz Joseph Frowiss (Froewiss), who arrived in NYC from Bregenz Austria in 1867, born in 1848, and who became a jeweler there. When he arrived in NYC he obtained employment at Tiffany's and ultimately became a foreman, personally specializing in broaches, etc.

He married Pauline Henrietta Engel (b. 9 Jun 1854) who had been born in Newark, NJ, to parents arriving from Germany in 1852. Charles or Karl Wilhelm Engel and Henriette Wilhelmine Drews. Drews died in 1857. Charles Engel, a lockmaker and/or silverplater, then married Rosalia on 25 July 1858. Friederica Rosalia Eichhorn, born 28 Feb 1830.

The Altenberg, Saxony reference came from Pauline Engel's marriage certificate from the church, which actually showed her "mother" to be Rosalia Eichner (not Eichhorn). However, all subsequent evidence which I found for the very same Rosalia shows her name to have been Eichhorn, Eickhorn or Eichorn, depending on the source. As it happens Rosalia was not Pauline's mother, but Rosalia obviously raised her from childhood through marriage.

The Engels and the Frowisses migrated to San Francisco. Rosalia died in 1917 in Sacramento.

I am interested in learning more about your husband's gggf, as I wasn't aware of brothers of Rosalia and Caroline, except for Theodore. It's entirely possible that I have made some errors in my own research. I show the parents of the siblings to be Heinrich Eichhorn and Friederica ____, both of Saxony.

I also don't understand the other sibling name you mentioned and how that person fits. Fredericke Heynen/Kunzler.
You had mentioned that the Eichhorns came from Altenburg, Saxony; I was wondering where that information came from? We were going by Schlegel's German-American Families book, which said that they came from Kahla, Saxony. (It's been a little confusing as there seems to be both an Altenberg and an Altenburg, and two Kahlas.) We found that several bits of info in the Schlegel book seem to be wrong or incomplete, so this could be as well. (My husband's gggf was Karl August Eichhorn, brother of Rosalia Engel, Caroline Berger, and Fredericke Heynen/Kunzler.) Thanks!

Re: George Eichhorn

I have seen a lot of different spellings for Catherine's last (maiden) name, and one alternative spelling for her first name (Katherine). George and Catherine lived with Catherine's brother, Christian, near Pittsburgh for a time after George returned from the civil war. George and Catherine were married while George was home on veteran furlough.

If I remember correctly, Christian gave a deposition in support of George's civil war pension application. I'll have to dig up the deposition and see how he spelled his own name.

Could you please post a reference where you have seen George referred to as George Augustus? I haven't ever seen him referred to as such.

In researching my great-grandfather, George W. Hoffmann, I have found he had a sister Minnie (possibly a nickname) that married Martin Eichhorn, both of Cincinnati. They had four children, Alma, Norma, Wilma (married Alfred Peters), and Herbert. Minnie and George's father was George Louis Hoffmann from Bavaria. I am desperate to learn about my Hoffmann roots and hope Minnie has descendants also doing research.
