Hello!
Erwin Rathke indeed was from Berlin. He was the president of the Berlin district of the LDS Church before and after the wall went up, but passed away in 1964. His daughter-in-law still is alive, so are his grandchildren. You could return the letter to the LDS Church in Berlin, and it will be forwarded to his family for sure. The address is:

Kirche Jusu Christi
Pfahl Berlin
Pfahlgeschichtssekretäaer
Klingelhoeferstr. 24
10785 Berlin
Germany

Any further infos or photos about him would be apprechiated, not only by the family, but also for the history of the LDS Church in the Berlin area. As the stake history clerk I am thankful for any kind of information that can be provided. Please feel free to contact me at any time.
Thanks in advance for your help.
Greetings

Olaf Wenke

Feel free to get any information from it you may need.

If you have anything we could use, we would greatly appreciate it. Currently, we are trying to find out where John Eikler (Joseph's Father) was born--Saxony, or Warin, Germany.

I came across this message thread while trying to find descendants of Erwin Rathke! I have an old LDS/Mormon newsletter he wrote while either being a Bishop, or Elders Quorumn President. It is dated, November 28, 1958. I don't know if this same Erwin Rathke is related, but if so, I would love to return any belongings of his to his relatives. It was written in Berlin.

If the John Eichler from Germany you are talking about is the Brewery owner.

I recently came across a book on the then and now history of the bronx- The Bronx Then and nOw - by Kathleen A. Mc
Auley and Gary Hermalyn-Arcadia Publishing- 2010

This book stated that John Eichler came to New York in 1853 from Germany- he went into the brewery business and he owned the Kolb Brewery and went on to establish the Eichler Brewery which was located near Fulton Street in the bronx- near 169th street.

I was wondering what was the history of a beautiful 19th century mansion located at the corner of Fulton Street at 169th Street. It was the Mansion of Mr. Eichler. Unfortunatley this mansion was recently torn down and there is construction there for an expansion of the bronx Lebanon Hospital.

If you google the address- Fulton Street and the corner of 169th street- you will see a picture of this mansion before it was torn down...I was wondering why this mansion was never placed on the Preservation list of New York. It would have made a great museum similar to the house of Edgar Alan Poe.

Hope this info. was helpful... good luck- ST

http://www.archive.org/details/cu31924028835234

has text from "America's Successful Men of Affairs,
An Encyclopedia of Contemporaneous Biography" published in 1895. It has personal data as well as a detailed account of Mr. Eichler's rise through the brewing business. This account says he died in Germany. Perhaps a stone was erected in NY.

I found this thread and the book as I had found an Eichler's Beer tray on eBay and purchased it as a point of interest in my role as Eichler Family historian for another Eichler strain in which my grandfather is also named John Eichler and was also interested in the manufacture of 'Bier'.

Side bar. The 1870 Census lists a slightly older John Eichler, Lager Bier Brewer, also in Morrisania with a sizable personal value for the time and a wife and daughter, Annie and Katrina.

I found some old family portraits and I have been trying to figure them out and find other relations. One picture in particular has me intrigued; it is a man I assume is my great grandfather and his wife standing outside of a shop titled, "Oswald Eichler, korbsmacherei". It is from the mid 1800's in Sachsen, Germany. My family is from Hildesheim Germany and did not come to America until 1989. I was wondering if anyone bears any relation to Oswald Eichler or might know more about Eichlers living in that area.

Mum is 77 and my sister Marion and I were raised on her stories of visiting England before the war broke out. This is most exciting. Lulu, (now deceased) has a daughter in Melbourne, Victoria. Her name is Michelle, no doubt, she'll be excited about this too. All we know about is our German ancestry through my father. Learning about our Brittish side will be fascinating!!!
Hi, sorry to take so long to get back to you... for some reason, I think John and Marie only had the one daughter, Augusta, but I could be mistaken about that. Sometime in the next week, I'll see if I can dig up my Eichler files to confirm this. There were a few Eichlers in the Morrisania section of the Bronx in the 1800s, and I think they were all related in some way.

My descent in the Eichler family is through William Eichler and Henrietta; their son Anton Eichler, b. abt. 1829 who married Sophia Maul; through their daughter Lillian Maud Eichler who married Abraham Lavenberg.

It would be fantastic to have a new cousin on my dad's side of the family!

Take care,
Donna

hi Donna
Wow I was very excited to hear form someone. My husbands mom is a Eichler and as she grew up was told of her great grandfather or great great being a brewer. My husband loves all this stuff in over the years together we have acquired a few antique Eichler Brewery bottles and tip trays and recently a turn of the century Eichler brewery Mirrow that a gave him as a gift this month for his birthday. I also been working since Jan. to confirm the connection. I also have been to the cemmetary and have pictures and lot cards and I am suppose to meet with the historian there in Woodlawn. Do you know if John Eichler of Eichler's Brewery had any living children and if so there names. If you are related to him you and my husband are long related 4-5 -6 cousins. Thanks for replying and keep me informed of any new info and myself too for you

Hello, I think I have some information for you. I have been to John Eichler's gravesite in the Bronx, and took several photos of his gravestone.

The stones are in German, but here's the info from the stones:

Johan Phillip Eichler, Geboren (born) den 20 Oct 1828
Frau Marie Eichler (Geb. [maiden name] Siegel), Geboren den 1831
Their daughter, Augusta, Geboren 11 Feb 1858, died 1863

I am related to this family-- I have an Anton Eichler who is buried in close proximity to John Eichler-- but I have been unable to ascretain the relationship yet. I recently moved, so I don't have all the Eichler info in front of me; it is in storage. I did find 2 of the Eichler gravestite photos, but they aren't close ups, so the writing is difficult to read. The close up photos are in my filing cabinets in storage.

Hope this helps-- let me know if you need more info, and I can try to locate it in my files.

Donna

Hi

Almeda had a brother named Jospeh Eichler/Eikler that was born in 1860s to Mary Howery and supposedly John Eichler (it has been much debate). He married Virginia "Jennie" Beard and had three children: Joseph C. b. 1897, William b. 1900 and Virginia b. 1903. Joseph C. might be your Joseph. He died in 1923 when he was 26 and was married but I don't know very much about him. If you would like to more about the Eichler/Eiklers please email at india2986@yahoo.com...Almost all of the Eichlers were also from Blakely or Elk, Kanawha County, West Virginia

Jenn Ash

(lindaash, is my mother the first person to post on Almeda)
I believe that Mayme was the daughter of Joseph Eikler. Mayme was born in Blakeley in 1919. Any connections? So far I have had a difficult time locating any data. thanks

My grandmother Anna Mary (Marie) Eichler was your Great-grandfather's sister. Like you I have been trying to find out more about her family and just a couple of years ago discovered that she had a brother, George who was married to Minerva and moved to Ohio. I have been corresponding with Cora Ott, ArocMae@aol.com who has been researching the Eichlers. She can tell you all about the Eichlers. Perhaps you can tell me something more about George and Minerva and I can tell you about his sister Anna. Perhaps someday we will find out something about George and Anna's Mother Martha Rose Elsässer Eichler. We must be some kind of Cousin. Dorothy

EICHLER - New South Wales, Australia

I'm looking for cousins my mother/grandmother lost touch with. The last known details were as follows...
Ethel Eichler, "Blink Bonny", 201 Brazil Street, Broken Hill, New South Wales and Flat 5, "Wirriwa", 63 Macleay Street, Potts Point, Sydney N.S.W. At some point, I think between these two addresses, she had a fruit farm north of Sydney. They were at the Broken Hill address in 1939.

Ethel's children were LULU & ALTHEA

I do not have the first name for Ethel's husband but Ethel's maiden name was MATCHETT. Ethel and her daughters came for a long visit to England in 1939 and then returned to Australia.

I'd be grateful for any information.

Jacqui
They could be related to the other Eichler family, whose patriarch (I believe) is Otto Eichler. There are several Naturalization records at the link listed below. My line (Anton and Bert) are there, however, there are several that are not of the line I research. You might try there.

http://www.rootsweb.com/~ohcuyah2/nats/coarch/part2/pg0062.h...

The Cuyahoga County Public Library website has a couple of online resources you might try, too. www.cuyahogalibrary.org/.

Erin Schroeder
The is an Elizabeth Eichler who was born 11/11/1896 and died 10/82 in Independence, Ohio.
Cleveland Ohio Eichlers

I search for information concerning Frank Eichler, married to Catherine Baker and their daughter Elizabeth or Elsie, born 1896 and married to John Alfred Gilden. Frank was probably born in the last half of the 19th century and he lived in Cleveland where Elizabeth was born.
As I read the above messages the words "Cleveland, Ohio" leapt out at me. My wife's genealogy is a series of brick walls and one of them is Frank Eichler married to Catherine Baker in or around Cleveland and our best guess is that they were born in the last half of the 19th century. Their daughter Elizabeth was born in 1896 and married John Alfred Gilden - these are my wife's grandparents. I wondered; nay, I hoped, there might be some known connection to the Cleveland, Ohio Eichlers you are discussing.
Jim Burnette
