Swimpfield Eidson - Cass County, MO

Swimpfield Eidson, a Civil War veteran, and one of the honored pioneers of Cass County, is a native of Tennessee. He was born in Hancock County, in 1837, and is a son of John and Malinda (Kyle) Eidson, both natives of Tennessee, and of old southern stock.

Swimpfield Eidson was reared in his native state, receiving a good common school education and from early life had a natural liking for horses, of which he was an exceptionally good judge. He gradually became quite an extensive horse dealer and has probably bought and sold more horses than any other man in Cass County. He came to Cass County in 1870, and engaged in farming and stockraising, giving special attention to horses, and while engaged in farming his attention was also directed to dealing in horses. His farm which consisted of two hundred and fifty- three acres was located about six miles west of Harrisonville. After he disposed of his farm, he invested in a livery stable which he conducted for a number of years in Harrisonville. He also owned a farm south of Harrisonville. He was also superintendent of the county farm for a few years. He now owns business property in Harrisonville, where he has a splendid modern residence and is living in retirement after an active and successful business career.

When the Civil War broke out he was a man of decided southern convictions and in 1862 he enlisted in Company F. Sixteenth Tennessee Cavalry. He was commissioned lieutenant of his company and served throughout the war with distinction. He fought under General Morgan and was under orders from that great Confederate leader at the time Morgan was killed.

Mr. Eidson was married in 1876 to Mrs. Sarah Ford Eidson, widow of his brother, John Eidson. Mrs. Eidson was a native of Tennessee and a daughter of Beverly Ford, a prominent politician of that state. Mr. and Mrs. Eidson were the parents of seven children, two of whom are living as follows: Nelia, married Charles W. Hight; and Charles D. Eidson, of Harrisonville.
Mr. and Mrs. Eidson are members of the Baptist church and his political affiliations have always been with the Democratic party.

Source: History of Cass County, Missouri

By: Allen Glenn

Historical Publishing Co. / 1917
Topeka, Cleveland

In May of 2004 a tree called Baylee's Ancestors by Richard Edison Jr was last updated. I tried using the email address for Richard Edison but it bounced.

I would like to hear from Richard Edison Jr. or anyone else who is researching Richard M. Eidson or Edison (born 1 July 1878 or 1879 and died possibly 1958 in Tulsa County, Oklahoma) and his wife Stella Mae Newton (probably born March 1884 in Missouri). Richard and Stella appear in the 1930 federal census in Tulsa, Oklahoma with their children Sherman E., Ethel M., Floyd, Jerry B. and Louise B. Edison or Eidson.

In Missouri their surname appears to be Eidson but in Oklahoma it appears to be Edison.

The Edmonston connection is found on page 822 of It's Spelled E-I-Dson due to the marriage of Cornelia Eidson to John Royce Edmonston. Unfortunately, Wanda did not have photos of this family to include. Cornelia's ancestry is well documented in the first two volumes and seven children are listed for this couple. Hope this answers your question

Since I am originally from Hawkins County and have tons of family still there, I was very interested in this query but I have not been able to find these ladies in any of my records. What were the dates of birth? There were two Eidson families in Hawkins County, not closely related. Since I cannot locate them in my branch of the family, I can only surmise they must have been from the Joseph line. If you could provide me with birth dates, names of their children, etc. perhaps I could get them identified for you. You are certain it was Hawkins County? There was also a large Eidson family in Sumner Co. TN.

Well, there is a Lewis Eidson in Clark County that had a son named William. In the 1850 Clarke Co. Census William is aged 10. In 1880, William B. Eidson is 39 years old. Which does fit with Lewis Son... but again also fits with John Robert Eidson's son William.

But William B. Eidson's wife was an Eidson her self. It is unknown if it is her maiden name or if she was married prior. W. B. Eidson married Margaret T. Eidson in Clarke County on Dec 20, 1860. Margaret, daughter of John Robert Eidson and Mary Catherin Harris is living with her parents in the 1860 Census but it was taken before the marriage of W. B. and Margaret Eidson.

If you prefer, you can email me at:
harrisbrewing at gmail.com

Mary Catherin Harris Eidson, is the younger sister of my ancestor Benjamin E. Harris and I am trying to research all the silbings and their families. That is my interest in these Eidson's.

Vance C. Harris

Hello,

It is indeed said news about George. I was of great help to me when I started researching the Eidson's.

Robert S. Eidson and Lorena E Eidson appear in the 1880 Jackson County census. They do not have any children in that census. I have been unable to locate them in the 1900 Census anywhere but they must be there. In the 1910 Census, Lorena is living with a Vaughn Family in Jackson County listed as widowed. So I don't think they had any surviving children.

Lorena Elizabeth Bowling appears to be the daughter of a J? C Bowling and his wife Elizabeth. They appear in the 1850 Oglethorpe County Census. In 1860, her mother Elizabeth is head of household.

I am also researching another Eidson who enlisted in Co. K 8th Georgia with Joseph and Robert named William B. Eidson. He married an Eidson woman in Clarke County Georgia named Margaret Eidson. The weird thing about this couple is William B. Eidson is the correct age to be William, son of John Robert Eidson and Mary Harris. And Margaret is the perfect age to be Margaret daughter of John Robert Eidson and Mary Harris. Obviously they can't be brother and sister but I am not sure which one belongs to the John Robert Eidson family.

Nice to here from you. I have filled in a lot of holes in George's data if you are interested.

I am so sad to tell you that George Edison died 14 Feb. 2011 and will be missed by us all. I have been entrusted with his research and computer database but since you have already discussed this matter with him, there may be little value in revisiting that. I also have access to Wanda Eidson's research and will attempt to check that source as soon as I can get to it after tax season (I'm a CPA). I have checked George's database and he does not have Lorena Bowling in it at all so this may be a missing branch of the Eidson tree and one we need to get straight. Did this Robert S and Lorena have children?

Hello Everyone.

Last year, I posted on these very message boards looking for information on John Robert Eidson and his wife Mary Catherine Harris who was my ancestors younger sister. This couple were married in Greene County Georgia and moved to Oglethorpe County Georgia where they died. They had a son named Robert Shelton Eidson who was born in 1839. In family information George sent me, he had Robert Shelton Eidson as being the same Robert S. Eidson who moved to Cobb County Georgia. I tried contacting George with email I used last and haven't reieved a resonse yet. George is not alone, everyone I have talked too about this family believes that the Robert S. Eidson of Cobb County is the son of John Robert Eidson of Oglethorpe County. HOwever, I don't believe this is so and I have proof.

Robert S. Eidson of Cobb County married his first wife Cynthia Elizabeth Steele on Dec 22, 1868 in Cobb County. Yet in the 1870 Oglethorpe County Census, we find a Robert S. Eidson living alone who is the correct age. So this can't be the Robert S. Eidson of Cobb County. This Robert S. Eidson of Oglethorpe County married Lorena Elizabeth Bowling in Oglethorpe County on April 29, 1872. This couple moved to Jackson County Georgia and are buried at the Commerce City Cemetery there. R. S. Eidson as he is listed on his tombstone was born on Nov 17, 1839 and died Nov 14, 1909. There is a military marker on the Grave of R. S. Eidson which says Co. K, 8th Georgia Reg. Inf. CSA. This company was from Oglethorpe County, and Robert Shelton Eidson had a brother named Joseph Eidson who also served in this company. I have checked the muster rolls of this company and a Robert S. Eidson is listed. It says:

Eidson, Robert S (or Edison)- private 1861. Discharged in
1861. Enlisted as a private in Co. K, 66th Regiment Ga. Inf. August
14, 1863. Surrendered, Greensboro, N. C. April 26, 1865.

So in conclusion, I do not believe that Eidson's of Cobb County Georgia are directly descended from those in Oglethorpe County. They may be related but are two separate lines. I would love to hear everyone's thoughts on this.

Vance C. Harris

Many of us have benefited from the generosity of George Edison's research and faithful postings to answer questions to further our research and information. I am deeply saddened to report that George died Feb. 14. At this time, I have no further information regarding his data files and information. George was my right hand in preparing the newsletter and in providing research for the publication of the Eidson newsletter. He will be greatly missed.

John P. Baldwin was Patton Baldwin Flannery married Ida Grace Cobb. Here's a little story about why the name change:

The Strange Case of Patton Flannery
(Scott County's most unusual case)

One of the most unusual trials ever held in Scott County Virginia took place in 1927. Folks came from miles around to crowd into the County Court House in Gate City, to sit through the proceedings and learn the fate of Patton Flannery, charged with being an accessory to murder.
What made the trial especially unique was the fact that the crime had taken place a full thirty seven years earlier, back in 1890! One afternoon in 1927, while a farmer called Baldwin worked in his fields with two of his children, a dusty Ford automobile drove up to the house and two men got out of it. One of the men, stiff and tired from a long journey, was Scott County Virginia Sheriff C.C.Palmer. The other man was a local Oklahoma officer. In his pocket, Palmer had two warrants, but neither issued in the name of Baldwin. The woman of the house told them that her husband was working in the fields, and that they could find him there.
Palmer and his companion walked around the barn and through a large well cultivated area.
The farmer and his two sons paused in their work and looked up when the officers approached.
"Howdy!" the older man called.
"Hello, Mr. Baldwin," the Oklahoma officer replied.
Palmer remained silent until he was within a few feet of the workers.
"Hello, Patton," he suddenly said.
Baldwin turned a shade pale under his deep suntan, and his hand shook slightly as he passed the hoe he was holding to his son.
"Palmer!" he said. "What are you doing here?"
"I have a warrant for your arrest, Patton Flannery," Sheriff Palmer declared, pulling the paper work from his pocket.
The Oklahoma officer stood by, a puzzled expression on his face.
"This man's name is Baldwin," he said. "I have known him for years."
"He is Patton Flannery, of Scott County, Virginia," Palmer replied. "And he is going back with me to face charges of aiding and abetting in a murder."
"That was long, long ago," the farmer said. "Besides, I didn't do that."
"Patton, I have to serve this warrant and take you in," Sheriff Palmer said.
"It has been outstanding for 37 years, since 1890!"
Flannery offered no resistance.
The second warrant carried by the sheriff was for Will Flannery, Patton's brother. But Will was no where to be found, and no one would admit that they knew of his whereabouts or how to locate him.
"I'm not going to handcuff you," Palmer said, "If you give me your word that you will go with me and not try to run away or escape. But if you try to get away, I will have to shoot you."
"I will go willingly, sheriff," the farmer said. "I know it is time to get all this cleared up."
Their arrival back in Gate City, Virginia caused a local sensation.
Trial was immediately scheduled on the charges of aiding and abetting in a murder, thirty seven years after the act.
Few people remembered the crime, and only two of the major witnesses remained alive, an aged store keeper, so frail and weak he was unable to travel to the courthouse to give his testimony and another old timer, now confined to a wheel chair. But both were willing to tell what they knew or remembered about the incident.
The accused, Patton Flannery, had lived and worked in McAlester, Oklahoma, for 37 years, under the name of Baldwin. He had married there, and had raised a large family, all well thought of in that community.
Mr. Baldwin was respected and highly regarded as a good man by acquaintances and friends there.
When it was reported a successful farmer named Baldwin, living in McAlester, was actually a former Scott County man named Patton Flannery, Sheriff Palmer had heard a mental click somewhere in the back of his mind.
"It seems to me that Patton Flannery was involved in a crime of some sort here years ago," the sheriff said.
Checking, he found an outstanding warrant for Patton Flannery's arrest on the charge of aiding and abetting in a murder; a warrant that had waited to be served for thirty seven years!
The other unserved warrant charged Will Flannery, Patton's brother, with the alleged murder of young Hiram Johnson who had been shot down in Scott County back in 1890.
Sheriff Palmer had made the long trip to Oklahoma to arrest the men, but could not find Will Flannery, and so was able to bring only Patton Flannery back with him.
. . .our story continues in our next edition. Don't miss it! (You can pick up our next edition right here. Papers will be delivered Friday, July 28)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
------- ------
Second Part, Daily News July 28-30, 2000
During the long trial, the entire story emerged.
On a peaceful Sunday in 1890, a number of local youths had gathered near George Ramey's store in Robinette Valley, hoping to persuade the proprietor to open up for business and sell them some of the "cider" he kept in his back room. A delegation of the boys went to Ramey's home with the request, and at their urging, the storekeeper got his keys and walked out in the road toward his place of business, ready to comply with their urging.
But before he reached the store, Will Flannery and his brother Patton, came down the narrow road on a horse, riding double on the steed without the benefit of a saddle. Young Hiram Johnson, the 14 year old brother-in-law of the storekeeper, suddenly stepped out into the roadway to meet the riders, and demanded repayment of a dollar of his money that he alleged that Will Flannery had. Flannery apparently denied having the money.
"You're our friend, Hiram, ain't you?" witnesses reported him as saying. "We ain't got a thing against you."
"You've got my money, and I want it right now!" the Johnson boy insisted, thunder in his voice.
Will Flannery got down off the horse at that point and the two disputing men grappled in the open roadway. As they struggled, the peaceful air was suddenly shattered with the sound of a pistol shot. Young Hiram Johnson clutched at his breast as if to stem the free flow of bright red blood that suddenly blossomed over his shirt, staggered a few steps, and fell down dead in the dirt and gravel road.
Patton Flannery, still mounted, fought to bring the skittish horse that had been frightened by the sudden loud noise, under control.
"Quick!" he shouted at his brother Will, "Get up here and let's get away from this!" And that's just what the Flannery brothers did.
For 37 years, neither of them had been seen nor heard of until the discovery was made of Patton living in a distant western state under the name of Baldwin.
People who had known Patton Flannery in his younger days flocked to the Gate City courthouse to get a look at the man who had been brought back from Oklahoma. They found that he was easily recognizable, for he was remarkably young-looking for his age, and had not changed greatly in appearance. When the shooting death of young Hiram Johnson had taken place, in 1890, Patton Flannery had been a 30 year old man, and his brother Will a few years younger.
Both at the jail and in the courtroom, Flannery met and conversed with many old friends and acquaintances of 37 years earlier, apparently enjoying the reunions in spite of his serious circumstances.
As the trial began, two of the jurymen who had been called to serve were found to be distant relatives of the accused, and so were excused from duty.
Others were quickly sworn in to take their places and the trial began. First off, the Scott County Circuit Court found it necessary to move out of the courthouse and journey to Robinette Valley to the home of George Ramey, the aged storekeeper who was one of the star witnesses in the case. Ramey, now aged and frail, was unable to travel the distance to the courthouse and could not otherwise tell his story. Although the years had taken their toll on his health and strength, Ramey's mind and memory were still sharp and good, and he told in detail his recollections of the shooting and the events leading up to and following it.
A second witness Hiram I. Johnson, another relative of the murdered boy, also testified. Although he was so old and feeble he was confined to a wheelchair, Johnson told essentially the same story as the court had heard from Ramey. Patton Flannery, now 67 years old, looked considerably younger.
The outdoor work on his farm had kept him healthy and strong, and the large and loving family he had sired seemed to have helped keep him thinking and looking muct younger than his age.
Dressed in a trim khaki army coat and matching trousers, the accused man appeared calm and confident, seeming to have complete trust in his lawyers, George M. Warren of Bristol and Wright S. Cox of Gate City.
Back in the courthouse, when the court reconvened, there was little more testimony to be heard. The crime had been committed so many years earlier that few witnesses remained save the two elderly relatives of the victim who had already been heard from.
During a recess, Flannery asked some bystanders about a childhood friend of his named Pat Winegar. He was told that Winegar lived in Kingsport and was reportedly on his way to Gate City to visit his old friend. "Pat was my best friend," Flannery declared. "I would sure love to see him." When the jury left the courtroom to consider their verdict, there was some tension among the spectators for everyone knew that his friendly, likeable man might well be in danger of being convicted of this serious crime and would have to serve a long prison term.
Within mere minutes, the jury filed back in, each of the members trying to look solemn and keep from glancing in Flannery's direction, efforts that were largely unsuccessful. Here and there a broad grin broke through on a juror's face, and was quickly wiped away with obvious great effort. "Mister foreman, have you reached a verdict?" the judge asked. "We have, your honor," then jury foreman replied. "How say you then?" the judge demanded.
"We find the defendant Not guilty!" the foreman nearly shouted. A roar of excited approval went up from the crowd. Banging his gavel for order, the judge declared the case dismissed and court adjourned. Just at that moment, Pat Winegar, Flannery's old friend of boyhood days, entered the courtroom to be greeted and reunited with his acquitted and now freed friend.

Jeff, I would like to help you out, but my Eidson database has more than 150 James/Jim Eidson's. If you can provide some specific names and dates I might be able to match you up and provide your Eidson lineage. What was your mothers name? Who were your great grandparents?

George
gedison@imt.nrt

I am also interested in Eidson family. I think it is possible that my Great Grandfather, Alexander Gibbons from Scotland, married Lucinda Eidson in August 1882 in Shelby County. I'd love to know if anyone has ever heard of my GGfather. I know so little about him. Kate.

David Eidson and Martha Skinner

I am researching, and descended from, this line. I'm seeking photos, stories anything to fill in the gaps. Martha and David had a daughter, Nancy Adeline, who had a daughter Josephine, who had a daughter Lola Erma. That's my grandma. I know well where Lola, Jose and Nancy are buried but cannot find Martha. She might be in Vernon Co MO. Martha's mother was Elizabeth Pitts-Skinner and I have no doubt she is buried back in the Carolina's, Kentucky on Tennessee. If you have information on this family, please contact me at:
grandmere1@embarqmail.com
and thank you!
