I am interested in tracing Schoemanns in Cleveland. Barbara(nee Schoemann) Eifel was married to William Eifel. The Eifels first went to Buffalo, NY when coming to the USA about 1854. Barbara had three (and possibly five) brothers--Gotthardt, Jacob, Peter, Mathias and John iving in Buffalo about 1854. All the Schoemanns and Barbara were from Neuerberg, near Bomberg in Germany (Prussia) from LDS records. Barbara, and possilby two brothers, Peter and Mathias, ended up relocating from Buffalo to Cleveland.

Could you give me the names of the Schoemanns (Schoemans) on the tombstones in the St. Mary's cemetary that you saw near the Eifels?

I looked up the LDS records for William and Barbara's wedding. Out of all the microfilmed church records I've seen, this is one of the only ones I've seen with the parents' names left blank. I guess they meant to fill it in later. This means I can't verify William Eifel's and Mary Ann Eifel Marmann's relationship.

Rereading your original post, Barbara died Feb 10th 1899. I was in the St Mary's cemetary in Cleveland checking in on Joseph and Mary Ann Marman's gravestone, and I saw a bunch of Schoemann gravestones with an Eifel right in the middle, This was William and Barbara's grave.

Thanks for answering. Lucia Eifel married and moved to Wittlich. The LDS records for Wittlich only go to 1821. I have more information which I got from the church in Wittlich when I visited. The Eifel brothers here are another problem. I think they were from Bombogen (which is outside of Wittlich). The church in Bombogen was very unhelpful and I talked to a woman at the County of Wittlich office and she could not find birth records for these two brothers. Maybe you'll have better luck than I did. Demetra

I was planning to dig into this research again in a couple of months. I found a couple of more microfilms in the LDS records, which might be helpful. The ones I looked through before only went back to about 1800, and they have some nearby church records which go back further. I just need to order the films, then get some hours I can spend looking at them. I will keep an eye out for Lucia, and post what I find.

Paul,
I just noticed your message about the Eifel family from Salmrohr. My husband's great great great grandmother was Lucia Eifel, sister to Peter Eifel who married Susanna Pohren. Lucia's son Peter Kaspari came to the U.S. with his son John B. in about 1865. There were another set of Eifel's in Chicago, brothers Peter and Joseph. My husband's family thought they were good friends, but they must have been relatives. They lived in LaPorte, Indiana for a number of years before moving to Chicago. They must also be somehow related to you, but I'm having a difficult time tracing them back to Germany. If you are interested, I can give you my information.
Demetra Kaspari

A couple of more things about Barbera Schoemann...

I just found in my records a copy of a christening of Eva Eifel, with parents William Eifel and Barbera Schoeman. This would have been from teh LDS microfilm of church records from Altrich, Wittlich, or Salmrohr, though I didn't write down which I copied this from. This was dated Jan 3rd 1851.

Also, Barbera Eifel's death records said she died of Bronchitis. She might be buied in St Mary's cemetary in Cleveland (Joseph and Mary Anne Marmann were buried there). This cemetary's records are at Holy Cross cemetary in Brookpark OH, and they were able to direct me where to find the Marmann's grave, 10 years ago.

Hi - My Great-Great-Grandmother was Mary Ann (Eifel) Marmann, William's sister. I have been able to track this like back to Germany. The LDS church has microfilmed a lot of the church records from the town they came from. Look for the Eifel/Schoemann marriage from "08 NOV 1848 Roemisch-Katholische, Bombogen, Rheinland, Preussen" in the IGI

If you look at a map of Germany, on the western border, just north of the Mossel River, is the Eifel Mountains, near where this family lived in the 1800s.

Contact me if you want more info. THis line goes back a couple more generations from here.
