Maggie, I just found that the original poster never let you know the name of his source. I originally found that picture with the same cropping only much darker in a reprint copy of 'History and Genealogy of Peter Eichenberg Family' dated 1955 on page 36.

I happened across some posts today on ancestry.com regarding Peter Eikenberry. It noted that you had more information on him and his family. I'm quite interested in this information since both of my maternal grandparents decided from Peter Eikenberry Sr. (my grandmother through Peter Jr. and my grandfather through John). If you could send me the information you have I would greatly appreciate it. My grandmother wrote down all she knew before she died, but it sounds like you have a lot more.

Thank you very much.

Curtis Smith
Lansing, MI
Re: Wm Eikenberry - Flora, Indiana - Mar 5, 1920

I'll answer you on this one too. Both sides of my grandparents decided from Eikenberrys and both lived in the Flora area their whole lives and attended the Bachelor Run Church of the Brethern. I don't see Wm. Eikenberry in my family tree, but my best guess is that he was a first cousin of Ora Spitler. The Eikenberrys began life in the US in Pennsylvania. They came over from either Germany or Switzerland in the late 1700s. Peter Eikenberry moved down near Roanoke Va. to farm better land. Later in life Peter Sr. moved with Peter Jr. and Henry (my grandparents forefathers) to Ohio. In 1832 Peter Jr.s son Isaac bought land in Carroll County, IN (near Flora). This is he same land my grandparents farmed. Isaac was an elder in the Bachelor Run Church of the Brethern. (this becomes my grandma's family)

My best guess is that Henry Eikenberry was Wm. Eikenberry's grandfather. This is my grandpa's side of the Eikenberrys.

Hope that helps. I could be way off but it makes sense to me.

Curtis Smith
Lansing, MI

I am interested in obtaining a copy of any of the history pertaining to the early family in Europe and America that may be contained in the book. I would actually like to buy a copy of the book, but kinda $$$$. Does anyone know if it is available digitally or would be will to make a copy for me. Since I've never seen the book I really have no idea how much history is in there, so don't know how big a task that would be. Any help greatly appreciated. The Eikenberry line that I'm tracing ended up in Flora, Carroll Co., IN.

I have several things that involve the Oakland Brethern Church. My husbands grandmother belonged to that church as did her family.
Have you seen the 100th Anniversary Year booklet? I have one of the original large photos that is on page 6 of the home Builders Class of 1918. On page 7 in the other buildings section, they talk about a meeting house at Beamsville. I have a hymnal that is stamped on the inside, "Oakland Church, Beamsville, Ohio".
I have several of the Messengers that was sent to Moses Miller in the late 1800's. There are a few other things.

I have a photo of the original Oakland meeting house.

No I am not directly related to either the Eikenberry or Miller families.

I am one of several Brethren historians whom are active in tracking down lost members of the Brethren community in the Miami Valley of Ohio. This also extends backwards to those areas, in this case Franklin county, Virginia, of especially the Miller family.

Elder Jacob Miller was very important to the early church in the Miami Valley and a man of great interest to me as a Brethren historian.

It would be nice to include anything you may have, espcially high-quality scans, of the material you mentioned. We are actively looking for photographs and new information as a book on the church in that region is in the works.

The 1955 book, History and Genealogy of Peter Eichenberg Family, shows (on p.182-187) up to five generations of descendants of this family.

"Joseph Eikenberry, b. Sept. 1, 1815, d. Oct. 13, 1875, m. Mar. 12, 1835, Nancy Douglas. Born and educated near College Corner, Ohio. In 1833 entered land near Flora, Ind., and lived there afterward. Minister. Brethren. Buried in Moss Cemetery, as are his wife and most of their children..."

The book (and other sources I have) provide Joseph's ancestry back to what is now Germany. I know nothing further of Nancy Douglas. Hope that helps.

Eikenberry(Ikenberry) / Harshbarger / Miller Letters

I am trying to locate some letters dating from the early to mid 1800's between the Eikenberry and Miller families of Virginia and Ohio respectively. They are now in the possesion of someone in the Harshbarger family of Virginia. This because the recipient(s) were the Ikenberry family who intermarried with the Harshbarger family down in the Rockingham, Botetourt and Franklin county, Virginia area.
It is related to me by a fellow Brethren researcher in Indiana that in the 1970's or 1980's he was talking to a Mr. Albert Harshbarger of North Manchester that the family back in Virginia had possession of a whole trunk full of letters with some of them being as early as 1804 between Virginia and Ohio.
Being a Brethren historian I am hoping to locate these letters as they have a wealth of information on the forming of the German Baptist congregations of Ohio as they were being formed.
