Wow, I was surprised when I happened to check an email I rarely use anymore. So I'm posting with one that I do use now. Email me and I will share what I have, if you're interested. I know I'm interested in what you have.
From what I was able to find out on Geneva before she married William Eiler, is that her first husband had died. There was a death certificate dated April 9, 1904 and that he died of pneumonia. I have lots of info on Geneva's parents, siblings, etc. thanks to a descendant of Geneva's brother Joseph.
I don't know when Geneva had left, but 1910 Census she was in Greeley Colorado and had been married to William Eiler for 2 yrs. I'm certain she was the one who gave the information due to the answers. It showed she had 3 living children and 2 deceased. We only knew of 2 boys.
Write me at pretensed21@yahoo.com and I will

Jennie Ruark Barnes was my great grandmother, my father's grandmother. My father's father was given up for adoption by Jennie not sure about the other children. My father is 86 and said his father never discussed Jennie or his father WIlliam. It is a big mystery in our family. My father's father abandoned him in turn when he was 11 years old and he never saw his father again. Interested to know that there are people out there with the same great grandmother...

I think my Grandfather Leroy Barnes Born May 27, 1902 was one of their children who was given up for adoption to a George C Elliott and his wife Mitie.

I keep hitting road blocks on my great grandfather as I can not find any death certificate.
Geneva Ruark was my Great grandmother. My grandfather was her son, his father being William Barnes, and apparently she gave him up at some point before Iowa. His name was Edward and he had 3 children, my father, Leroy Edward Barnes (86), William Barnes (deceased) and Arline (deceased). Edward abandoned his children as well (my father) when the were 11, 9 and 7 respectively. We never met our grandfather nor my grandfather's mother Geneva, we only know of them by birth certificates, other family records and family folklore. We knew she was part Maryland Indian, we were told Cherokee all our lives. So I guess we share the same Great Grandma.

I'm still trying to figure that one out. In the 3 census records after the Eiler/Cyphers marriage the Hannah in those records appears to be the same person - age and birth location. Then there is a record in 1876 of a Hannah Eiler marrying a Wilson Barton but in 1880 Wilson Barton is single and living with his parents. So I have yet to figure out the Eiler/Barton ties.

Since I just found Hannah's and her son's death info I might be able to track down more info through those records. If you are interested I'll make a note to update you if and when I find more info.

Colleen

Yes, I found a marriage record for Hannah and David Eiler in May of 1868 in Wells County. They are in the census records in 1870, 1880 and 1900 along with their son Manford Samuel Eiler who was born in 1869. Just this week I found the death info on Hannah (1907) and their son (1912) who was not married and did not have descendents as far as I can tell.

Martha is in the 1870 and 1880 census living with her son Calvin. Based on the info at hand Martha and David divorced between 1860-1868.

It caused quite a commotion when I brought this up years ago as none of the Eiler researchers had seen the marrige info or had looked at the census records showing Martha and David living in different places. It had been assumed that they were still married to each other when they died. But there are always new records being posted and so I constantly go back through my research to see if I can fill in any blanks or document the info I already have. Far different from the days when I had to go to libaries and wander though cemeteries!

Colleen

I don't think we have directly corresponded before. I found some of your posts a long time ago (2004) and placed them with David Eiler in my file.

Have you solved the 1880 US Census issue with Hannah Cyphers as wife of Daniel? Martha is listed in a separate 1880 census with her son "Calvin."

James
Photo Album (1870-1925) possible Eiler Family (very few names). "Christopher Eiler" is on a couple of photos. Additional insurance papers, and other documents show Christopher Eiler, Jr. of Muncie, Delaware, Indiana, USA. My limited ANCESTRY research turned up a Christopher Eiler, born abt 1877, and lived in Muncie, Indiana. I'm confident this is the same person. Muncie, Indiana phone book records also depict Nickolas & Mary Eiler, John & Margret Eiler for the same time period.

Forum searches (to date) have not turned up any EILERs from Muncie, Delaware, Indiana, USA.

I'm willing to unload this album and documents if there's any interest.

Eiler Family - Paks, Hungary to Akron, Ohio

Greetings! I am new to research, and I am wondering if anyone can tell me about our family line from Hungary. Another family member did some research a while ago, and I am fairly sure I have correct data back to my Great-Grandfather Joseph Eiler (b. 28FEB1868 in Paks,Hungary d. 27JUN1941 Akron,Ohio). Farther back than Joseph, I have a few names and dates but nothing else. If you can help fill in my blanks, I'd appreciate it. :)

Joseph's father was John Eiler (b. 1842, d.2FEB1912) locations unknown. John's parents were Frank Eiler and Elizebeth Bender, no other info about them.

Joseph's mother was Mary Baume (b.1848, d.3MAR1910) locations unknown. Mary's parents were Peter Baum and Theresa Mutz, no other info about them.

Joseph and his wife Eva Jiling came to the US in 1893, first to Illinois and then to Akron, Ohio.

Annual Iler Reunion

Hello All,
I had seen this on a fellow member's tree and it sparked my interest. It was a picture of a monumet that was built in commemoration to the iler decendants. I find it interesting because at the bottom it says that there is an annual reunion every year. Does anyone have information about this reunion or when it takes place if it still does?? Any info would be much appreciated.

It might be the same John Eiler mentioned by Kendra Hatfield.

My family's Eiler-Eilar ancestry goes back to Hagerstown in the 1700s, which may be coincidental to them. Now, of course, it is possible that there was a family connection in Germany.
Doug Eilar

Kendra,

(Same name as a cousin of mine on my Mom's side!)

I don't see a listing of an immigrant named John Eiler in this geneaological book. This book says this name, in various forms, was recognized as a surname by 1490. My ancestor Conrad Iller/Euler (names later changed to Eiler) came from the Rhine River area of Germany in 1729. Perhaps there was some connection prior to that.

There are a number of Eilers in our extended family lines, but there are many others for which we aren't aware of a connection. The book I have lists perhaps 5000 names, but Morgan Iler had accumulated close to 80,000 names in his research over 4-5 decades. He died several years ago, at about 92. He does have some surviving family members, and perhaps one of them has access to his records. My best suggestion is for you to contact Dixie Ford, who knew him well; her email addr is: dixrod@sbcglobal.net

Good luck!
Doug Eilar

James,
I have a copy from the book you sited....meaning, I don't have the actual book, just some copied pages. Of John Eiler's children, his son, Bill, is my great-grandfather. I have been to the Tipton Co. Library and done some research on these folks. How does your family fit into this family? Since there are so many children in that generation, it is easy for me to get confused.

Kendra
Teaches490@yahoo.com

This is information the same John Eiler?

F.A. Battey & Co.,, Counties of Howard and Tipton, Indiana Historical and Biographical, (Chicago: 1883).

pages 274-275

JOHN EILER is a native of Germany, where he was born April 24, 1807. He resided in his native country until 1832, when he emigrated to America. He for some time worked by the month in Pennsylvania. He then removed to Indiana, and resided for awhile in what is now Hagerstown, Wayne Co., Ind. He built the first house ever erected in that place. His next removal was to Henry County, Ind., where he remained for eleven years. After that he spent one year in Hamilton County, and then, in 1851, moved to Tipton County, where he has since resided. He purchased twenty acres of land near the Wabash Railroad, which he soon disposed of for $500. He then bought eighty acres in Section 32, Cicero Township, which he still owns. Of his present farm, sixty acres are under cultivation; it is well drained. Mr. Eiler has been twice married. First in Henry County, Ind., January 7, 1835, to Catherine Kiser, who died in 1860. He was married the second time in Tipton County, on the 19th of July, 1860, to Rebecca Sarver. By his first wife, he is the father of ten children, viz.: George W., Simon, Samuel, Abraham, William, Catherine, Martha, Susan, Mary and Matilda. Politically, he is a Democrat, and he and his wife are members of the Christian or Disciples' Church.
Hello David,
I just read your message here, then dashed to find the photo I have of some of my ancestors. This photo was taken about 1920 and shows the children of a John Eiler ( gr, gr, grandfather) Shown in the photo are Molly Eiler, Abe Eiler, Kit Eiler, John Eiler (a son), Martha Eiler, Bill Eiler (my gr, grandfather), and Susan Eiler. My records show more children, but they were not present for this photo. My puny research shows that Abraham had a son, Benjamin. Do you think we have a connection anywhere? These Eilers settled in Tipton County, Indiana and some nearby communities. I don't have any specific information on exactly where, but in Central Indiana. What is your take on this information?

Kendra Eiler Hatfield

Hello Doug,
I am Kendra Eiler Hatfield, and I live presently in Central Illinois. A few weeks ago, I drove to the library in Noblesville, IN to read a copy of the Eiler geneology book mentioned in the subject line. I felt for certain that book would give me some hidden information. Seems like that book pertains to another family of Eilers. My gr, gr, grandfather, John Eiler came from Hessen Kessel Germany. In due time he made his way to Hagerstown, Indiana....I believe. Found recored of his application for naturalization, but can't locate anything after the application. I'm curious about the family he left behind. Did he have siblings? What was his parents' occupation? Religion? Reason for leaving? If your ancestor is Conrad, perhaps we have no connection. He married on 18 Aug 1841 in Pickaway County, OH to Mary Ann Anderson.
Does anyone know if he had a middle name???
His father was Jacob Iler Sr. who lived in Hancock County, OH.

My mother was an EILER, from Minersville, PA. Her father was Kenneth EILER (1898-1990?).

I believe my niece and sister have been working on the EILER line and Conrad wa on of Kenneth EILER's ancestors.

Does this fit with anything you know?

Gale

Doug
It seems that I never check these pages. I have had many things going on over the last years, that however is no excuse for not getting back to you. It would seem that Conrat is the predecessor of all the Oylers in this country. I also believe that my husband is an ancestor of Conrat’s, although I can’t prove it because I am unable to locate the father of my husband’s second great grandfather. I have been trying for 30 years and have accumulated vast amounts of information on various family members. I have yet to organize it into a searchable reference. It appears that the particular branch that my husband decended from stayed in MD and PA, at least until Hiram (2nd great grandfather) died in his 30’s. They were also lousy at leaving records, and when they did most are vague at best. I have attempted to access any source I come across but have never been able to definitely locate Hiram’s father. I worked for the NSSAR for a year and wasn’t even able to find an answer there.
As far as Dr. Eilar goes, I have communicated with him and he made it very clear that I was not related. Up until recently Morgan Iler was the probable best source of information on this family. He passed away within the last year.
Some of Hiram’s family supposedly went west on a wagon train and some are located in different areas of the Midwest. My husband’s direct decendent stayed in PA until later in life then moved in with his son in Cuyahoga Co Ohio and died there.
I don’t know if I can be of any help. If you leave me more specific information, i.e. Dates of birth and death, parents, issue, siblings, I may be able to help. Most of these families were famers and had numerous children and as was common with German families. They also named the children with relatives Christian names so you wind up with 6 Jacobs all born within a few years of each other. It’s hard to separate them out without dates.
Phyllis
David,
Interesting account. My son, Dave Eilar, just was in New Castle to pick up a load for delivery to Kentucky. He drives an 18-wheeler. He & I were there last Nov. for the Eiler-Eilar-Iler reunion, about the 70th annual one. Have you ever been to it?

I have a story of comparable note. Several years ago, I arranged to go sailing in the Chesapeake, as this has been my hobby for decades in CA. I decided to get a boat with skipper, so that we could have a local show us around. Turns out, the skipper's name was Bill Iler, and I believe he was related to the late Morgan Iler, who is in our family tree. But even more amazing, is that he married a woman from Colorado whose last name was also Iler. So, we had four of us Eilars on the boat, including my daughter.

Doug Eilar
