Sandy,

Hopefully you are still monitoring this forum. The info you've provided here is great! I only had that Joseph was born somewhere in France c. 1820.

That fills in a nice piece in my tree.

My fiancee is descended from Hannah Ehst, wife of Henry Moser. There son Daniel Ehst Moser m. Laura Wetzel Dierolf d/o Jacob Fronheiser Dierolf & Caroline Wetzel. Daniel and Laura had a son Herbert Moser who married Clara Dietrich d/o Wilson Dietrich & Margaret McAllister. Herbert & Clara are my wife-to-be's great grandparents. In during further research I am pretty sure Abraham Ehst's wife Elizabeth was born Ca 1816 according to census records. It appears she was the daughter of Jacob Schoenly and Hannah Bierbauer. She may have first married David Weiser in 1837. I'd be happy to exchange further information. My e-mail is jrlutz10@hotmail.com

My g-grandfather, Jacob Moyer Ehst, compiled notes for a family history in the 1920's(but had very little documentation) I quote from some of his notes:
"Daniel Ehst Sr son of Nicholas born about 1735, mar a Miss Keim of Oley Twp."
"Abraham Ehst, son of Dan. Ehst Sr mar Miss Minninger of Pike Township Berks Co Pa and had one son. Abraham lived in Colebrookdale Twp Berks County about one mile above Grims Mill."
"Abraham Ehst son of Abraham born in Colebrookdale. Married 1st wife Mrs Weand and had no issue. Mar second wife Miss Schanely, had issue Ephraim, Abraham, James, Edwin, Miss Rhoads, Mrs Mabry Muthard, + two other daughters. 1 daughter mar. Moser."
I essentially filled in the blanks with census records.

How do you fit in?

I would like to thank you and Dan for your replies. Samuel does not appear to be the son of Nicholas. It appears that he is the son of Abraham and grandson of Nicholas. Is your information on Daniel-Abraham--Abraham-Hannah, posted online? Also where did you find the maiden names for the women? I was hoping that the sources might lead me to more information on these families also.

Thanks
Jeremy Lutz

I have slightly different info from Dan. First, I think we agree that Nicholas did not have a son named Samuel. Nicholas's son Daniel (b 1735)hsf a son Abraham, b abt 1770, married to a woman whose maiden name was Minninger who in turn had a son Abraham b abt 1800. This Abraham married Elizabeth Schanely, and had a daughter Hannah, b abt 1843, who married Henry Moser. This is not my direct line, so my documentation is slim, but I believe it to be accurate
His son, Samuel, is shown dieing in 1812.Samuel had a son, Abraham born about 1800. This looks like it could be your Abraham. My wifes Eis/Ehst info is at Rootsweb under the keyword, The Roth Roster.
Good luck.
Dan and Celena Hyde

I don't have much more info on Nicholas. The family was and are still mainly Mennonite, mainly in the Berks Co area of Pa., although some moved to Ohio. The family all believes Nicholas was from Switzerland, but noone has any proof. When Nicholas immigrated in 1732, he was 21, probably unmarried, and a check of other passengers on the ship show now obvious relatives. The passengers seem to be a mixed lot, some fropm the Palatinate, some from Switzerland. and settled in various areas, so it doesn't seem to have been any type of group. The name is variously spelled Ish, Eis, Isht, Eisz, making it difficult to trace the family back in Switzerland

My gg grandpa was Edward Eis b. 25 Feb 1852 in Dayton, Ohio and my information says that his wife's name was Tabitha Ann Campbell. And that his parents are Joseph Eis and Christiana Loupe. I found some info on this web site that speaks of an Edward Eis and a Martha A. Campbell and that his mom's name is Margeret Christian Louke. Are these the same people? The only relative I have who is also interested in genealogy is my great aunt (grandaughter of Edward) and, unfortunately, she is in ill health and I can't ask her. If anyone knows I would appreciate some help.

Some of which are Adam, John, Elizabeth, Joseph, and Mary Ann. Joseph was born Oct 14, 1820 in Forbach, Moselle, France. They were in fact ethnic Germans since they did speak the German language. I would like to hear from you. I have birth records copied from LDS film from Moselle France. They are actually in French that show Joseph Eis birth record.
Re: Joseph Eis b. abt 1820, father of Edward

Stephanie, I am the daughter of your Great Aunt Itha. We recently moved Mom to an assisted living center and I have some of her books and she gave me the family pictures when we moved her. I belive Aunt Ines has grandpa Eis' Bible. Mom had it rebound several years ago, after Grandma died, and gave it to her. According to the family tree that is framed Grandpa Eis was born 2/25/1853. There is a family photo taken several years before Grandma Elsie was born, even before Aunt Mary was born. I have also found the information about a Martha Eis, but have not been able to determine exactly who she was. There is also a portrait of Christina Loupe, born in France. In Mother's things there are some notes regarding family history. I think the family has always been under the misconception that Grandpa Eis was born in Germany -- but I don't believe he was. I am at home recuperating from shoulder and bilateral hand surgery so I will try to find some more information for you. Grandpa and Grandma are buried in Beaver County. She died in 1901 and he in 1932. His 2nd wife was Anna.

I have earlier EIS families in Licking Co, OH, some of whom moved to IN. My Catherine EIS was born in Folkling, Alsace-Lorraine, France and was married to Joseph Rosler in Forbach, Alsace-Lorraine, France. I believe the EIS family emigrated to OH in the 1840's. I may be lacking a generation or so to connect to many of you but feel there is a connection. Please email me at momsterr@usa.net and we'll compare names

Catherine Eis

Searching for information regarding Catherine EIS born in the early 1800's. She is thought to have immigrated with her husband, Joseph RUSLER (ROSSELER), from Metz, Alsace-Lorraine in 1837, and settled in Licking County, OH. On later census records, however, Joseph stated that he was born in Baden, Germany. Did they, perhaps, migrate from Germany to Alsace-Lorraine for political reasons and, from there, immigrate to America? In Perry County, OH, there lived Adam, Joseph and Katharine EIS who followed a similar immigration pattern. Were they siblings of Catherine EIS? Catherine seemed to be a baptismal name in the Perry County EIS families.

Hello in the US
I come from the Gerolstein region and have 5 Jacob Eis in my files from Gerolstein, they were all born between 1805 and 1856. If you could give me some more information I might find out which of these is the right one.
Hope to here from you soon.
I'm interested in your news because Jacob Eis is not among the people from Gerolstein who emigrated legally. I have at least 100 people named Eis.

Yours
Walter

Kay,
Jacob Eis, born in Aug. 1810 was married to Eva Martin. They are my wife's great-great-great grandparents. Do you have the date and ship on which they came to the U.S? This is the 1st time I have seen the name Johann and would be very interested in what info you might have. I have much of the Eis family history for Henry County Ohio. Mark

Hi,
Etta Eis Rogers lived to be 103 years old if I remember correctly. I have a letter from Elna Eis, which is dated in 1995. At the time Elna wrote to me, Etta was celebrating her 102nd birthday. I know she has since (Etta) passed on, as somewhere I have a copy of her obit. It was sent to me a couple of years ago, but I am remodeling and it is buried in my garage somewhere. A copy of it should be obtainable through the Muesser Library there in Muscatine.
Jane

Re: Joseph Eis b. abt 1820, father of Edward

Aside from a difference in names, which can easily be distorted as they are handed down through families or transcribed improperly in records, I do believe we have the same family and that Joseph was born 4 Oct 1820 in Forbach, Moselle, France, the son of Jean EIS and Anna Elizabeth GREFF.

I welcome the opportunity to correct my records and share with you what several of us have gleaned from French records. I'm also looking to verify that the John EIS found living in the 5th Ward of Dayton close to Joseph was his brother, Jean EIS b 1 May 1815.

Sandy
sandra.read@verizon.net
