She was christened Elizabeth Ida in the Salem Lutheran Church, Mount Sidney, Virginia (currently the Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church). She was orphaned on the deaths of her mother, Elizabeth Link Stover (1822–1867), originally Elizabeth Juda according to Salem Church baptismal records but later changed to Elizabeth Ida, and father, Simon Stover (1822–1873).

She lived with her maternal grandparents, William Link and Esther Schindler Link, on their farm until William's death in 1879, and then with her maternal uncle and aunt, William J. Link and Susan Cook Link, on their farm until age twenty-one whereupon she joined two of her brothers Stover who had moved to Kansas. Ida was five years old when her mother died; she was sent to live with her paternal grandparents, and later to her elder brothers in Kansas. They did not believe girls should be educated, and instead pushed her to memorize the Bible. When Ida was ready to go to high school, she was told that she couldn't, so she ran away.

Stover graduated from high school at age 19 and taught for two years[citation needed] before entering Lane University, where she met her future husband, David Jacob Eisenhower
Eisenhower DNA study

Given the incomplete nature of German records for the Eisenhauer origins and the varying opinions of the pre-1700 ancestry, I recommend we use DNA testing to get some answers. If you are a male Eisenhower (all spellings) and know your ancestry back to an American immigrant, please contact me about a Y-Chromosome DNA test.

The test is painless and will tell us much about the Eisenhower ancestry in Germany! Let's get some answers. Contact me directly at: korym (at) comcast.net.

Thanks.
Info Needed On Particular Records That May Show Maiden Name

If this happens to be the wrong section to post this, and if there may be a better category to help with my search, please let me know.

A brief rundown of what I'm looking for, and what I have, may end up helping in my hunt for information and help another genealogist give me some advice.

My great-great-grandfather was married to a woman, Sallie Eisenhower, who would be my great-great-grandmother, in Philadelphia, PA. I found that she died at the age of 39 from blood poising. I found out from a cemetery director that along in her grave was a child, Albert Eisenhower, who was listed as 13 months old at the time of death. What led me to believe that this was probably her child, was due the fact that the child died a year later, 13 months exact, from the time of her death. The feeling I have is that she probably died of complications from childbirth. I have never known this woman's surname, only my family's surname, with none of the family actually knowing anything about her other than she was my great-grandfather's biological mother who died when he was just 14 years old. My great-great-grandfather remarried, so the stepmother was usually referred to as a grandmother even though it was not through blood.

Trying to find my biological great-great-grandmother's surname has become an arduous task with dead ends at every turn. She either lists with her married name, Eisenhower, or is not listed at all.

I went to one of the family burial plots and requested any info about the people buried, four to be exact. Her name was placed on the tombstone. I received a list containing the names, their burial dates, and their last known residence at the time of their death. Of course, she was buried with her married name and there was no record of her maiden, which I assume is standard in a cemetery's records. Anyway, to make a long story short, I found her last address at the time of her death.

Next, I searched archives to find her death registration which listed the coroner, cause of death, and actual date of death. So I have this information.

What I am now looking for is something listing her maiden name. I have my great-grandfather's death certificate from 1940, and it contained spots for both the father's and mother's names, including the mother's surname. Unfortunately, since she died so young and the family remaining never met her, the area which should have been filled in with her information was left blank.

So now I'm wondering what a death certificate from 1885 looks like from Philadelphia, and if like the 1940 one, would also request her parent's names. The other question I have is, if infant dies and did not pass at least a year in age, were they issued death certificates as well? I'm thinking of not only requesting Sallie's death certificate, but Albert Eisenhower's as well, although he did not turn up on any death index. I also don't know if I should try to request Sallie's marriage certificate as well. These are a few items I'm thinking could contain her maiden name, and perhaps if Albert was indeed her child. Like I said, I'm trying to find something listing her surname.

Basically, what I have tried to lay out here, is the information I have, and if a fellow genealogist could tell me if this information is enough to request other certificates, and which ones I should be looking for which may contain a maiden name.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give. It is immensely appreciated!

Sincerely,

Al Pellecchia

I find your message confusing -- and offensive. I was asking who the parents were of the William EISENHOWER who married Catherine BOYER. You seem to be accusing me of attaching William to Samuel & Mary when I did no such thing. I was asking a question, not making an assertion.

Try reading a message more carefully before getting your knickers in a knot and launching an attack. And as you don't know the answer to my question, there was no point in your replying in the first place.

Wm. EISENHOWER (1843/4-1870s) of Berks Co PA

Seeking parents of William EISENHOWER (b. 1843/4, PA), who married Catharine "Kate" BOYER (b. Apr 1849, Richmond Twp., Berks Co., PA), daughter of Levi BOYER & Elizabeth WANNER. William & Catharine are in the 1870 census of Oley Twp., Berks Co., PA, then William dies and Catharine marries second to James M. HOMAN. William & Catharine had these children:

1. Barbara EISENHOWER, b. 1866/7; m. Mr. SCHOENER
2. Mary EISENHOWER, b. Oct 1868; m. Elwood B. STRAUB
3. William P. EISENHOWER, b. Jun 1871

In looking for William EISENHOWER in the 1860 census to find him living with his parents, there seem to be two possibilities, the first more likely than the second:

William & Catharine (MacHAMER) EISENHOWER in Runscombmanor Twp., Berks Co., PA

or...

Samuel & Mary EISENHOWER in Union Twp., Schuylkill Co., PA.

Does anyone know if either of the above is correct? Or, if not, who his parents actually are?

To: Marilyn Mease
I think you have found a match.

On June 13, 1803, John Jacob married Nancy Anna MacDonald, believed to have been from York County, which is now Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. There were five children from the marriage. All of their children were baptized in the Zion Lutheran Church. Their fifth child, Johannes Frederick, later known as John Frederick, was born May 24, 1813 and died March 2, 1863. Not long after Johnnes Frederick’s baptism, John Jacob, aged 35, died and was buried at the Wenrich Church (a.k.a. the Zion Lutheran Church, located in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.) His wife outlived him by many years, dying on January 1, 1862.
By trade John Frederick was a tailor, who settled in Newburg, Cumberland County, sometime prior to April, 1834. That same year he married Catherine Jane Miller (October 27, 1817 - January 25, 1889). From that marriage came five sons: James Winebrenner, who moved to Pontiac, Illinois, Lemuel Smedmer (March 26(25), 1839 - October 7, 1906), Alonzo Dallas (1844 - 1916) a teacher for whom a high school in Norristown, Pennsylvania was named; and Edward T. and Edwin E. both of whom died in infancy and are buried in the church graveyard in Newburg.
Lemuel is my great grandfather. One of Lemuel's sons, James Smedmer Dallas Eisenhower is my grandfather. Same name, Jr. my father, and me.
